Noticing precisely nothing.

"I do recall someone saying that the eldest tree would be as big around as a sorcerer's tower or something along those lines. Let's try looking for the biggest tree we can find. If we get desperate I suspect if we put an axe to a tree, there would be a 'reaction' of sorts when we hit the eldest tree. We could go around just hitting trees with an axe just one time & see if anything happens. Again, that is ONLY if we are desperate though! I do feel as if these woods are watching us, so perhaps some sort of beneficial act towards the woods may be better, but I have no idea what that would be."

The elder tree should be the one with the one with the largest circumference, shouldn't it? an easier Kn: Nature check should confirm this. Illiam pulls out his 50ft of string. We can use this to measure. The tree that takes the longest length of string to wrap around it is the eldest!

Also, if someone inspects the moss on the trees, the elder moss should be different in some way.

Seems like a good time for adaptable luck...

Baradim moves cautiously through the darker side of the forest, the lack of noise making him feel quite a sense of unease. This wasn't the lively, living place that they had left behind, this was an ancient place where the trees have stood for time untold. Quietly, he whispered a prayer for the spirits when the forest became as still as death.

"That is correct Illiam, the oldest would be the largest and it is somewhere nearby. Keep your eyes peeled, we will find it."

Baradim draws the guisarme, not trusting the quiet that is all-around them as he continues to move between the trees.

Kn: Nature: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Baradim studies the trees for a moment with a calculated eye, looking back at the others. "This way." For the observant, they'll notice that the direction that Baradim seems to go seems to have larger and larger trees. It seems he has found the correct direction to go.

Perception For Tree: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Baradim searches for the moss that doesn't seem to fit in and frowns when all he finds is the same, dark colors that decorate almost every other trunk within this maze of trees.

He looks back at the others, making sure never to be too far away from them all, and notices that Illiam has freezed and called for quiet. Raising his hand, he motions for everyone to stop and listens for the silence in the forest.

Perception For Noise for Baradim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Perception For Kanga: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

The half-orc hears nothing, about to lower his hand when Kanga begins to grin and looks up into the trees with a low snarl.

"Whatever it is...it is above us..." Baradim murmurs, scanning the canopy for what could be waiting for them.

Up there. Illiam doesn't point, but he makes the direction he's looking clear. I haven't gotten a good look at it yet, but I told you what I expect to find, and I have a plan to deal with it.

Yes, at this point, Illiam is just making an educated guess that it is either a wyvern or a tatzlwyrm. It might just be some birds or squirrels, but he's acting on his guess on the premise that it if he's right, the attempt will help more than it will hurt if he's wrong. At this point, I hope it doesn't turn out to be a wyvern, both because the stats look intimidating and because they should be able to see it once they know where to look. I suppose if it was a very young one, that could solve both problems.

Also, at this point, he has to hope that they don't understand common (I know it's not on either stat sheet, but Illiam can only assume and hope), because some people don't seem to be taking the hint to whisper.

With sudden fury the green-scaled reptile flies out of the tree straight at Illiam, pouncing atop him, slamming his fanged maw into the halfling's shoulder, rending his back with his claws, and wrapping his snake-like tail around the poor little man. Illiam immediately loses consciousness from the ferocity of the attack, and his new friends must witness as his flesh is torn apart, exposing his spine and internal organs.

My view of the map says that Baradim and Lunarinus would have gotten AoO's from the movement through their threatened squares. I'll let you two roll those. I am sorry to say that having rolled max damage (17), and adding in the falling object damage (2) Illiam is, in fact, dead (-19). It was a good run. I'll address the character death in the discussion thread. As of now, combat continues with Baradim and Lunarinus AoO's against the tatzlwyrm, and then Baradim and Kanga's turn.

I thought that Illiam had a readied action to teleport away in case he is attacked? Or was that already calculated. I'm going to make my AoO's anyways

Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

That, I am certain, is a whiff.

But I had a readied action...

Battle Grid

With all of the onlookers appalled at the spectacle of Illiam's seemingly so sudden demise, barely anyone notices that Illiam is actually standing between Lunarinus and Kairon. Having shifted out of the way, and created a silent image of his own death. Brilliant, and effective, instead of hitting the soft flesh of a halfling, the attacking tatzlwyrm instead landed hard on the ground. The dragon kin's falling attack is met with the whiff of Baradim's guisarme, but Lunarinus connects in solid fashion, smacking the tatzlwyrm hard on the back as it falls to the ground.

Extra Falling Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Totally apologize for the mishap there, I didn't notice that Illiam had readied an action to shift. Brilliant strategy. All is well, our halfling wizard is fully intact. :)

Sweet. Not to push my luck, but does he also fall prone (which would make Baradim's attack hit)? Scipio also still has to roll his.

His plan having been successful, Illiam runs to safety, trying to find a place to hide. Is there enough underbrush, or will he have to get behind a tree? Trying to go somewhere northwest of his current position.

Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

It is prone now, yes, but the AoO actually occurred before the creature hit the ground, as it happened while the creature was falling. So, no Baradim still missed. Of course Baradim and Kanga are both up after you in the initiative, and it will remain prone, so... :D :) As to the undergrowth there is very little to speak of, so if Illiam wants to get out of the fight, he'd want to find a tree trunk to hide behind, and hope there are no more tatzlwyrms hanging about in the branches.

If there's not a good place to hide that he can reach, Illiam will go to the place I have his token now (adjacent to Baradim) and try to take the wand of animal growth. (which I assume Baradim will allow, if he even notices).

Baradim will watch the illusion of Illiam be torn apart, his eyes widening an a cry escaping from his lips. "Illiam!"

Yet when the halfling reappeared though nearby, he let the moment of relief spread upon his face for only a second before focusing at the task at hand.

"Kanga! Circle and strike!" The mountain lion is spurred into the attacking, moving quickly along the group and skirting the wyrm's reach as it passes by incredibly close to Goruck to circle along it.

I use the full 30ft of movement for my animal companion to avoid any AoO from the wyrm.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Baradim doesn't even notice as Illiam makes his way, reaching for the wand upon his side. Instead he strikes down fiercely to try and kill the beast so their focus can turn towards the other threats. A quick prayer is whispered in Sylvan as Kanga's muscles seem to bulge and the feline grows stronger and more terrible.

The two of them move in tandem, Kanga's fangs looking to rip into the beast's tail as Baradim brings the sharpened blade upon its form.

Using my Swift action to switch Kanga to Animal Aspect: Bull for the Strength bonus and then attacking.

With a flanking bonus AND on a prone target, I think that does confirm. If not for the max HP thing, that would be enough to drop it even if it hadn't already taken falling damage.

It is, however, enough that Scipio's AoO should be enough to drop it. By my count, that's 28 points of damage plus 5 non-lethal, with a max HP of 39. That means Scipio's AoO only needs to do 6 more point of damage to drop him to 0. With a STR bonus of +4 and 1/5x STR for a two-handed weapon, min damage is 7.

Oh, just noticed that Mended rolled the AoO for Lunarinus. So, that's 40 points of damage (not including the non-lethal), putting him negative. Nice. Now to worry about the other two.

I'm going to take some liberty here and move Baradim's token. Technically in order to get the flanking bonus he has to be on the exact opposite side of the enemy, even with a reach weapon. Once that move takes place the critical does confirm, and the extra damage applies. Of course that also puts Baradim directly below Tatzlwyrm number two... But, perhaps better he is the target than Chillel... Obviously that move took place after Illiam filched the animal growth wand, since that happened on Illiam's turn.

Battle Grid

Baradim and his lion companion move in perfect synchronicity, slamming fangs and blade into the prone dragon-kin with expert precision. The grievous wounds the two hunters incise upon the creature sap the strength from it, and it falls into unconsciousness. Immediately the downed creature's relative drops from above, pouncing on Baradim with all its fury.

The green-scaled monster slams onto Baradim with a ferocity unlike anything the envoy has seen yet. Its wickedly sharp and jagged teeth slam into the hunter's neck, drawing a massive amount of blood, and the increased velocity of its attack bring Baradim right to the brink of passing out. He still stands, but any exertion of strength could drop him out of the fight. To make matters worse the serpentine tail of the creature has wrapped itself several times around Baradim's torso, keeping the two in a tight grip. 10 HP damage, so Baradim is at 0, and currently has the disabled, staggered, and grappled conditions. Dolok, Chillel, batter up!

The third tatzlwyrm flies out of the nearby tree directly at Goruck, apparently surmising that he is one of the greatest threats. It pounces with vicious rage and carnal power, biting deep, and finding flesh underneath his armor, raking deep gouges in his flesh. Kairon and Goruck both get a hasty swing as the creature descends, but it doesn't stop the creature from slamming Goruck into unconsciousness. This is clearly the deadliest foe the Almas envoy has faced, and the success of their mission sits on the brink of disaster. Who will curb the tide of calamity?

Kairon and Goruck both get AoO's for the tatzlwyrm moving through their threatened squares, but unless they both do a crapton of damage I don't think it's going to stop Goruck gaining the dying condition... After those AoO's Lunarinus, Kairon, and Goruck are up. If Goruck isn't saved from the negatives, he'll need to make a DC 10 Constitution check to stabilize or lose another hit point.
