As Vark notices Zincher's departure he concludes his performance for the evening and hustles over to Mazra and the bouncer.
"I hope I didn't scare him off! He seemed pretty annoyed when I asked him for a request. Did he say anything to you?" The last he addresses to the bouncer, hoping the exchange wasn't pertaining to how many minutes he had left on this world.
Tamiro |
Tamiro watches Zincher's activities and departure closely. As the man leaves he simply shrugs and walks over to Mazra at the door guard.
"Seemed tame. Did not seem he want to start trouble. Perhaps just checking in."
Slothsy |
As you stand around discussing Zincher, a red-faced cook bolts out of the kitchen area, shouting, "A big red snake got into the scullery - it bit Ola!"
You're in initiative order as you determine how to respond. The scullery is room 13, or boxes C8, C9, D8 and D9 on the map. Also, this time, since there's just one thing, I'm going to try running initiative normally.
Tamiro: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Vark: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Vara: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Mazra: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Nel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Thing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Initiative Order:

Tamiro |
Tamiro raises an eyebrow at the cook, "A...snake."
Grumbling, Tamiro marches into the kitchen, drawing his wakizashi, "Cowardly Gaijin...cannot take care of a snake...kitchen is full of knives..."
Tamiro will move into the scullery, D9.
Varknarnost Kettlewidget |
Vark double moves towards the door at J10, unfortunately leaving his spear (and flag) propped up against the wall near his table in the corner.
My double move is 40', so if someone could move me I would be much obliged. They're really cracking down on internet usage here at work :/
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Vara hurries into the kitchen and stands to the side of the scullery door in square E8 and looks in from the edge. She attempts to identify the snake that attacked the woman.
Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
She also observes the woman. If I am able to tell, how severe is her condition? Bleeding out, poisoned or does it look she may have passed out from shock?
Heal, if needed and if able: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Alraniel "Nel" Sandhal |
Releasing a groan as a commotion exploded from the kitchen, Nel sent an annoyed look at Saul's office on the second floor. The old man was never around when things got difficult. As she moves her way over to the source of the battle, Nel draws her longsword, prepared to slice at the next hostile thing in her way.
Double move action to move to M 15 and a free action to draw my sword as part of my move.
Slothsy |
Vara, you notice that the woman is unconscious and continues to bleed.

Tamiro |
"Nani?!" Tamiro yelps as snake tries to bite at him.
Caught unawares by the snakes speed though he swings wide, cursing in Tien as he misses the vermin.
"It is a fast serpent!"
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Mazra of Sandpoint |
Mazra will look at the woman bleeding out, "Cayden stop this woman's bleeding." He then draws his Rapier.
Mazra cast Stabilize on the woman. The spell has a 25' range for Mazra.
Varknarnost Kettlewidget |
Vark moves into the room, hugging the eastern wall, taking up position just behind Mazra. Moving 20' to G10.
Forgoing his instrument, he raises his voice in lighthearted song:
"A deadly beast is in the kitchen,
Take up your arms, quit yer b~+in',
One has fallen to it's vicious bite,
Come my comrades and show us your might!"
+1 atk/dmg and saves against charm/fear to all allies that can see/hear Vark.
6 rounds of bardic performance left.
Alraniel "Nel" Sandhal |
Hustling her way towards combat, Nel mentally curses her scalemail for the way it encumbers her movement.
Double move to I8
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Any information about the creature from the knowledge nature roll? ^^
"We have to lure the snake away from her!" Vara cries, indicating the unconscious woman.
She slips through the door, past Tamiro to attempt to stabilize the dying Ola.
Acrobatics, to avoid opportunistic fangs!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Vara moves to D 8 or C 9- whichever is not occupied, and attempts her heal check. Is the snake coiled on top of the woman? Or is she in one of the other squares in the Scullery?
EDIT: If both squares are available, Vara opts for D8 since it's closer. ^^
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Slothsy |
The woman is in square D8 - it's just not marked since you can also occupy that square. The snake bit and then slithered away.
After jumping over the snake and avoiding its lashing bite, Vara is able to assist in stemming the flow of blood, and the woman no longer appears to be bleeding.
It's also a free knowledge (nature) check on your turn to identify the creature and find out what you know about it, if you want.
Tamiro is up, snake is on deck.
Tamiro |
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Tamiro continues cursing and slashing wildly at the snake that seems to be untouchable.
Okay, seriously, can I hit now???
Alraniel "Nel" Sandhal |
"Everyone, fall back! With any luck the pest will follow and we can surround it." Brandishing her sword, Nel moves up, hoping to spread some insightful wisdom to the two trapped in the closet.
Standard action to activate Nel's Tactician ability. For 3 rounds, anyone who can see/hear in 30 feet of Nel get to use Escape Route. Nel will move to E8
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Convinced she has saved Ola's life for now, Vara frowns as Tamiro is nicked by the snake's fang. She turns an impatient look at the Samurai, hoping for him to begin moving out of the room to lure the snake away.
She then turns inward, her expression Serene, and calls forth the gift of the Great Ash.
Use Wooden Fist, free action.
Faster than a flick of a snake's tongue, Vara's knuckles sprout thorns and weave into brambles. She then attacks the snake with a double punch!
Full attack!
First punch!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Second!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
EDIT: Ye-ah!
Confirm crit. for first punch!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Thwak!: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Round 3
Heeding Nel's words, Vark backs up (moving 10' to I9) while continuing his performance.
+1 atk/dmg and saves against charm/fear to all allies that can see/hear Vark.
5 rounds of bardic performance left.
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Vara, if you were forgetting the bardic performance buff, you would hit with both attacks :)
Ah, thanks Vark, Slothsy, of course! Awesome, it is a valued buff indeed Vark! Though let's not forget, that the buff's also come with inspired lyrics. ;)
So first hit was: 4 + 1 = 5
Second hit, shmak!: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Yiii! So nine damage total, after all!
Tamiro |
Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Confirmation: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Feeling the venom burning, he takes one last swing before moving out towards Nel, outside of the room.
"Gah, that serpent is dangerous...is anyone able to hep with its poison?"
Attack then retreat to F9.
Slothsy |
Tamiro's blade slashes though the snake, slaying it and leaving it dead on the floor. However, Tamiro is overtaken with poision, taking 1d2 ⇒ 2 constitution damage.
Rolling the other Fort Saves now
save 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 Pass on the first go - you just take the 2 con damage!

The woman is still unconscious, but stable, on the ground. Nearby, there's an overturned basin.
Mazra of Sandpoint |

Mazra lifts his tankard, 'Cayden help me heal these people.'
Mazra Channels Healing Energy
Channel Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Channel Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 2
3 more Channel energies remain. Let me know if more is needed.
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Vara hops back against the wall of the scullery as Tamiro slices into the snake. She looks with regret at the dead serpent. Then closing her eyes, she speaks soft words of consolation quickly to herself
"A veruna það var, enn að ormarnir naga á rætur í heiminum, svo kannski fær hann það sem hann á skilið."
Then, hearing Tamiro's cries for aid with the poison, she calls to him, still within the scullery, "I can slow the poison Tamiro. However, allow me to help Ola here first, for she has carried the venom in her blood for longer."
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
As Vara squats down to treat the woman lying on the floor for any viper poison, Vara notices the piece of paper on the ground. She goes wide-eyed at the image, and returns it to its location, making a mental note to point it out to her companions later. For now, she must focus on her work.
Using heal to treat poison.
Treat Poison, vs poison DC, on the prone woman, Ola: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
"Here, let me help you off this floor, my dear," Vara croons to the woman, offering support to help the woman stand.
Then turning to Tamiro, "If you still require my aid, I can help you in just a moment!"
Turning back to the woman, Vara says, "Now, let's clean and cover the bite, and any other wounds you have- unless Mazra's magic has fully mended you? And then let's get your some water and food, and a place to rest comfortably"
EDIT: Changed around the order of what Vara says here a little bit. Since she was probably poisoned, food and water would be a good idea regardless to what extent the healing magic has fixed her external wounds. :) Unless of course, channel energy heals con damage too?
Vara would listen to any reply from the others, help Tamiro if he wishes still, and then once out of the scullery, she informs Nel of the note she found.
"Lady Knight, Nel. I believe this serpent was sent through the window on purpose. There is a note in the scullery threatening mister Saul's life should he refuse to leave town. I have left it where I found it- to show everyone."
Varknarnost Kettlewidget |
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Peeking out from behind Mazra and Vara, Vark halts his performance. "Is it dead?"
After hearing Vara's suggestion of food for the woman, Vark hurriedly flags down a cook and requests all manner of culinary delight, expressing the need for urgency.
Overhearing mention of the note, Vark slips into the scullery. He picks it up to examine it further, and his hand begins to shake as he realizes it's implication. "It looks like Saul's past has come back to haunt all of us..." He looks around to the others with nervous, desperate eyes.
Slothsy |
Nope, you need a restoration spell to heal ability damage. However, you also recover from ability damage at the rate of one point for day. If you have a skilled healer (aka a Heal Check for Long-term Care, DC 15), you can recover at the rate of two points per day.
"Thank you. Desna truly smiles upon such a warm soul," she says sweetly. She's somewhat unsteady on her feet as you lead her to food and rest. "My name is Gildi. I've never had my employers treat me with such kindness before. The last place I worked for," she pauses to sigh, "they would've had my job for this. I didn't even see that snake under the basin until I moved it for cleaning!"
Mazra of Sandpoint |
Is Gildi fully recovered from the attack? If she too has any ability damage, then Mazra would like to find a bed for her to rest in until which time she can get back to full strength. He will do the Heal Checks daily for Tamiro too; unless he had rather purchase healing from one of the local Temples. He would normally recommend the Tavern of Cayden Cailean, but finding a Cleric sober enough to perform the task could prove to be an issue. ;)
Just let me know when it is OK to make a daily Heal Check. Thanks!
Slothsy |
You can go ahead and make a heal check on Gildi. She's taken six points of constitution damage. She's at her maximum hit points; however, this isn't a lot since the constitution damage limits what her maximum hit points are. In addition, if you purchase a healer's kit (50 gp, 10 uses), you can use that to get +2 to your check. Likewise, you and Vara can both work on healing, using the aid another action. She can only benefit from one check at a time.
And let's see what Tamiro says about healing before healing him! You can make the check for Gildi at any point.
Mazra of Sandpoint |
Then with Saul's permission, he would like to find her a room near Mazra and Vara so that we may treat her. Mazra is all over the idea of getting aid from Vara. So I will wait for her posting and let her make the check with Mazra's aid. Not as hip on the idea of the Healer's Kit since his funds are not the best. I am hoping time will not be an issue. Thanks.
Heal Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Edit: Forgot I need to go ahead and give a check in order to give Vara the +2. Barely made it. Whew! I think Mazra will go fill his tankard. Anyone care to join him?
Saul, Gold Goblin Propieter |
Saul grunts and says, "I'm not too keen on the idea of letting out rooms for free. I like you, though, and you're a junior partner, so I'll let it happen this time. Trust me, though, make a habit of it and it'll be coming out of your pay. Gotta keep this place in business after all."
Curiously, he continues, "What happened, anyways? I can't have people getting attacked in my hall! Look into it and let me know how this happened.
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
"I would like to think the people here would care for me as well, if I were hurt." Vara explains to the poisoned woman kindly, "This is a dangerous place after all, so it is all the more important that we care for each other so long as we live under the same roof."
Standing, she waves in everyone offering to help her. Then looking back to her, "What happened to you could have happened to anyone. The only one to blame for it would be whoever placed the serpent there. And I have a feeling I may know who that was..."
She looks at the many rich foods Vark had brought to the woman, and shakes her head saying. It all looks delicious to her, but probably not the best for someone who is feeling very sick. "Do you think you keep some of this down, or shall we find you something milder?"
Vara is happy to receive aid from Mazra! ^^ She would want to check Tamiro's condition as well, and work to make him comfortable should he accept their care.
Heal, caring for Gildi, in cooperation with Mazra: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 = 16
Heal, caring for Tamiro, if a second check is needed: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
And, responding to Saul:
"With all due respect, mister Saul, Gildi is one of our own. Our ability to survive in this city would be better if we all cared for one another so long as we share the roof." As she speaks, she looks Saul in the eye, and then suddenly hides behind a curtain of blonde hair.
"If it would be troublesome for her to have a separate room, she could stay in mine until she is recovered." She mutters quickly after a short pause.
In response to Saul's question of what happened, she looks around at the others, and taking a breath as she brushes her golden tresses from her face, "A snake was found under a washing basin while Gildi was cleaning the scullery. I believe it was planted deliberately- based on how it was found, and on a note someone left. I would suspect Zincher... though if you know of any group in particular who are fond of using snakes for assassinations... If not, I would like to take a closer look at it. If it is a rare kind of snake, perhaps there is a certain place someone would have to go to get one. That would be a lead for us to find out who is behind all this."
Speaking of the snake- Vara would also like to harvest the meat for cooking, the skin for making a belt, and the venom for weapons! (~_^)
Tamiro |
Tamiro slouches down in the corner, leaning back against a wall as he sheaths his small blade, feeling a bit sicker from the snakes venom. Waving at Vara to continue he says, "Ah, takes a bit more than a snake to put me on my back. Help the woman."
Thinking he mutter to no one in particular, "I did not know this land had such venomous serpents."
As Vara tends to his wounds he grunts his thanks, a slight nausesness welling up. "Arigatō. I feel a nights rest could do me wonders though."
Mazra of Sandpoint |
Saul grunts and says, "I'm not too keen on the idea of letting out rooms for free. I like you, though, and you're a junior partner, so I'll let it happen this time. Trust me, though, make a habit of it and it'll be coming out of your pay. Gotta keep this place in business after all."
Curiously, he continues, "What happened, anyways? I can't have people getting attacked in my hall! Look into it and let me know how this happened.
"Well Saul the next time someone sends a viper your way, and tries to kill one of your servants, then I will gladly pay for the room," Mazra feeling a bit annoyed with Saul at the moment. "Or trust me, we could let the viper finish its task. You think about that." Mazra gives Saul a stern look, then walks away to go fill his tankard.
"Vara" Mjötviðra |
Thinking he mutter to no one in particular, "I did not know this land had such venomous serpents."
As Vara tends to his wounds he grunts his thanks, a slight nausesness welling up. "Arigatō. I feel a nights rest could do me wonders though."
As Vara tends to Tamiro's snake bite symptoms, she seeks to make conversation, giving him encouragement, in her own way.
"Some people... where I come from, say that a serpent's venom is a blessing. Should one be bit, and then recover, there is strength to be gained in that."
She tests his vision by getting him to follow her fingers in the air, then asks him to breath while she listens to his breath. Between checks for symptoms of poison, she continues her thoughts.
"There are many serpents, great serpents and ancient wyrms that gnaw at the roots of the world. Their venom causes suffering, and madness, yet it is the source of all magic. Odyn- or Nethys, as you Southroners call him, saw this when he was strung to the Ash Tree..."
She looks him over one last time, convinced he is no longer withering from the venom, merely still feeling its first affects.
"The zest of life is a struggle against the poison in the depths of the world..." She muses, half to herself. "From suffering comes strength..." She then whispers to herself.
With a sudden tremor, and a last check of her healing work, she looks at Tamiro with piercing, inquiring jade-blue eyes through a curtain of blonde tresses.
"Every tree has roots, Tamiro. You may think it unimportant, where you are from, but I would like to know your story, if you would share... Perhaps in the morn, if you do not wish to speak at present."
I think Mazra will go fill his tankard. Anyone care to join him?
Yes! Once the sickies are asleep! ~_^
Vara checks on both patients throughout the night. Once both are sleeping, she would share another tankard of ale with Mazra, and practice her Varisian with him. She would especially request happy folk tales or amusing stories of people from his past... kind people from the South.
She would also try to get Vark and Nel to join them as well, as those two also must have wonderful stories to tell. (^_^)
Varknarnost Kettlewidget |
Lacking the skills to assist them with their wounds, Vark fusses over the injured, taking it upon himself to ensure Gildi and Tamiro are fed and comfortable.
Once the patients are securely tucked away in their beds, Vark happily joins Mazra and Vara in the common room, telling his fair share of stories (omitting the catastrophe at the Rose and Rake) from his days spent travelling across Varisia with the Umbra Carnival. He sips a crystal flute of red wine and it makes short work of his small stature. Before realizing it, Vark's eyes take on a glazed appearance as he begins to sway on his stool and slur his words.
Slapping his knee at a joke he already forgot the punchline to, "Heh heh ha ha hee hee HEEEEE. Ah, the life on the road! W-what a wonderful t-time in my life. Hic! I will shay, however, that thesh weary old bonesh are happy to finally shettle down in a place of my, ah, excush me, our, own. Ha hah ha!"
Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand he staggers to his feet, taking up his sloshing crystal chalice, "To many yearsh of proshperity at the Golden Goblin!" He holds up his glass, aiming to brashly clink it with the others, before Vara quickly relieves him of his grip, saving the goblet from shattering to bits.
Slothsy |
Vara, I forgot - If you want to harvest venom from animals to make into poison, it's a Craft (Alchemy) check equal to the fortitude save required to overcome its poison effect. You can attempt it without putting a rank in Craft. It'll be 1d20 + your intelligence modifier. If you roll a natural one, you're exposed to the poison and must start making the fortitude saves to overcome its effect. This is pretty much the only skill check where rolling a natural one has an instant negative effect.
