You reach the outer edge of the radiation's disturbance field. Long range scanning takes more time and may be less accurate than close range but with the radiation field disturbance below, its going to be the most accurate at this point in time.

Scanning for ships passage, remains of fuel debri (most ships operate on Crystals which are extremely long lasting and efficient). Make a Computers & Communications AOE roll for this particular scan.
Wiki Definition: The solar wind is a stream of charged particles ejected from the upper atmosphere of the Sun. It mostly consists of electrons and protons with energies usually between 10 and 100 eV. The stream of particles varies in temperature and speed over time. These particles can escape the Sun's gravity because of their high kinetic energy and the high temperature of the corona. The solar wind creates the heliosphere, a vast bubble in the interstellar medium that surrounds the solar system. Other phenomena include geomagnetic storms that can knock out power grids on Earth, the aurorae...
Here are my scan checks:
Radiation Field: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24
Solar Winds: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Ships Passage: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

In regards to the radiation field and the solar winds, your scans concur with those of Lightning Lad and nothing new is learned. As you continue your scans though, you do pick up residue from a space craft which recently passed through the area. Based on your information, it appears to be only one ship. The trail is faint and the residue which remains from their fuel indicates the passage took place somewhere between 1-3 hours ago. Based on the amount and content of the residue, you believe the ship to be smaller in size. Many small ships do not use the most expensive and pure of crystals, which explains the opinion your forming. Ships such as the Legion craft usually use far more expensive crystals as they are the most compatabile with the engines and provide greater efficiency.

Obelisk
I wish to spend an hour digging for crystals. All the vegetation might point to minerals.
OCC: Crystals...do they come in different sizes/colors? Or are they like those shiny ones in Dinotopia? )
Crystals come in a variety of sizes, some are mere slivers weighing a few ounces on up to others being 200-300 lbs. Crystals do range in color because of the different properties they are composed of while others are a mix of crystal and other types of rock. The crystals your ship is fueled by are a near transparent in color. The engines of your ship contain a crystal reactor which breaks down the compounds of the stone and transforming it to energy. The engines also have a waste disposal system which separates and eliminates non-useable compounds.
Crystals are very hard and generally require specific machinery to break them into useable pieces. Your ship's crystaline container may hold one or more rocks not measuring more than a cubic 8 inches. There fore, anything you find must be pretty small unless you find a way to break it down into smaller pieces. The good news is that most crystalines are smaller in size.
Should you find other varieties of crystals (such as blue, green, red, etc.) they can be put into the crystal reactor in order to see how they react to the engine. It is possible that some may provide less efficient means of fuel though it is also possible that the wrong chemical reaction could also ruin your engine.
The Academics & Business & Trade/Energy Crystals area of expertise could provide valuable information as well as Science Engineering/Spacecraft Engineering or the Sciences Planetary Studies/Geology may prove useful in determining the crystalline effects upon your engine prior to the trial and error method. In order to narrow your search to finding crystals, Academics & Business & Trade/Energy Crystals or the Sciences Planetary Studies/Geology AOE may reveal where to search.

No problem a character shouldn't have every AOE anyway. Fortunently, most areas of expertise can be used untrained. Below in boldface are the rules for using AOE untrained.
Academics & Business & Trade/Energy Crystals: Untrained -6 categories; Basic Traits: Intellect and Concentration
Science Engineering/Spacecraft Engineering: Untrained -10 categories; Basic Traits: Intellect and Concentration
Sciences Planetary Studies/Geology: Untrained -6 categories; Basic Traits: Intellect and Concentration
According to my copy of your character sheet, Obelisk has an Intellect of Exceptional/7 and a Concentration of Astonishing/9.
In order to use Academics & Business & Trade/Energy Crystals or the Sciences Planetary Studies/Geology AOE untrained, you subtract -6 categories from your Intellect and your Concentration. This gives Obelisk an Intellect of Feeble/1 and a Concentration of Poor/3, for a grand total of +3 to the die roll (all of the primary trait/Intellect and half rounded up of the secondary trait of Concentration).
If your character uses Science Engineering/Spacecraft Engineering; they have an Intellect category of Subfeeble/-3 and a Concentration of Subfeeble -1. If you use this AOE roll your d20 and subtract a total of -4 from the die roll.
If this is confusing feel free to ask questions, otherwise here are your modifiers for the die rolls:
Academics & Business & Trade/Energy Crystals: +3 to die roll
Science Engineering/Spacecraft Engineering: -4 to die roll
When using an untrained AOE, the character automatically reverts back to their basic trait score. The modifier for “untrained” is the number of categories subtracted from the character’s basic trait score. If the character has any other bonuses or penalties applying to the untrained AOE they are calculated in after the category has been determined.
When subtracting untrained category modifiers, a character may easily reach Subfeeble/0 or less. In cases of this, the categories must continue with Subfeeble/0; Subfeeble/-1, Subfeeble/-2, Subfeeble/-3 and so on. Any negative number is subtracted from the actual die roll total.
Finally, if the untrained AOE has an entry of “No” it means that particular ability cannot be used at all by an untrained person.

Garth, there is a faint trail from a ship that passed through here. I suggest we try to extrapolate its course to determine it's probable destination prior to setting down on the planet. I'm concerned if we wait, we may miss a chance to determine who preceded us to our location.
not sure what type of check to make here, so I'll do the two that seem most appropriate. Eileen, let me know if I should make a different AOE check to work out the ship's probable course.

All Players; I beleive that I will expand the Planetary Travel Area of Expertise by adding "Instrument Reading." All characters may add this to their character sheet. The category you select must be equal or greater than your Comuputers and Communications category. Please do not exceed the category of Epic/12 unless you check with me first. I'll just want to know why your character should have it higher. Note, there are rules for specialization for anyone who wants to take advantage of them.

Invisible Kid You examine the remains of the propulsion system and though you cannot make an exact specification, you know that it different than those normally encountered. You determine that the fuel is from a small, private ship rather than a larger one designed for combat. The engine system properties are similar to those used about 30 years ago, which by your standards are very inefficient. If you want to lock your instruments on to the trail of the other craft, thus follow it (without line of sight) make another Instrument Reading area of expertise check. The stream is still well placed together and thus it shouldn't be to difficult.

Ok, sounds like Lightning Lad and Wildfire are going to look around.
Shadow Lass, are you going with them or are you going to stay with Invisible Kid?

Cosmos Master |

I'll take a look around the surrounding area. I'm going to fly up and get a look at the area from the sky.
You fly a couple hundred feet upwards and look around. The clouds are turning an ominous dark green and the temperature is starting to drop. The jungle canopy may presvent you from seeing anything of interest on the ground. Make a Sight check.

Cosmos Master |

I dont know what my spot is; I see sight good/6 on my sheet; and detect person +11/+10; so how do I roll to percieve?
In this situation if your flying and looking overhead, you would use Sight. Sight is a more general looking around for anything of interest.
Detect person is more like when someone is hiding in shadows and you would like to find them.
I can see why you would be confused by this and I will fix it. Thanks for pointing that out to me Lightning Lad.
For now, use Sight if you joined Wildfire in the air. If your staying on the ground, no roll is necessary.
Thanks!

Invisible Kid
Star Boy/Cosmos Master Coverage)
Garth, I'd like to take a closer look at the ship.
Star Boy says "I'll give you a hand with the craft Lyle. It doesn't look like its been here all that long, if their is anyone still alive they can be far. Shadow Lass, why don't you see if you can find any footprints, perhaps they walked off. "
As Invisible Kid and Star Boy approach the small craft and begin looking around, the following is obvious.......The ship is small and has enough passenger space for five individuals at best. The shell of the ship is dark blue with silver colored metal strips on the side for decoration. The make and model is a Quantum 55 Outreach spacecraft, a fairly popular ship about 30 years ago.
As you look through the windshield, you can see that the secondary passenger seats have been removed and it looks like someone may have been living in the ship. You can see assorted clothes and equipment scattered about the rear of the ship. The equipment you can see is essential survival gear, you see no signs of any kind of research equipment.
The engine utilizes crystals which has served as a primary fuel for crafts for over the last 130 years, though you would consider this type of craft to be pretty inefficient compared to those developed now.
A ship this size would be used primarly for planet hopping within a single star system. Based on what you can see on the outside, it does not have the capability of travelling through wormholes so it is unlikely that the owner came from a great distance.
This completes your initial inspection from the outside. You have yet to open it and get in or give the outer part of the ship a very thorough examination.

The door opens and you look in. According to the instruments you can see that the ships fuel is very very low. It operates on low quality crystals. It looks like someone has been rummaging through the back of the craft. An assortment of clothes and misc. survival gear is present. There is a good amount of food and water present, enough to sustain a single person for perhaps a month or so; a week or two for 2-3 individuals. There is no survival suit present. You don't notice anything odd or out of place.
