Okay guys the 3 of you that posted interest can start posting here with character ideas and any question you have. Character creation rules are spoilered below. To open the spoiler just click on the white show button next to it.

Character Creation guidelines:

-Characters are level 1
-Max starting wealth(found on page 140 of the core rule book)
-Classes from Core(if your new to pathfinder try to stick to just this), APG, Ultimate magic, and Ultimate Combat are acceptable
-Standard races(those found on pages 21-27 of the core rule book) would be preferred. If you want to play something unusual I may allow it based on background and strength of argument for why this race should be allowed.
-NO third party publishing sources allowed
-Race traits, feats, magic items, and alternate class featurs from the Advanced Race Guide are allowed but you can not build your own custom race.
-2 traits one of which has to be a campaign trait from the players guide(be sure to get the anniversary edition of the players guide)
-20 point buy(as explained on page 16 of the core rule book) with no stat above 18 or below 10 before racial adjustment.

I would like to play a barbarian if nobody minds. I have a concept pretty much worked out, but have several other ideas if someone else had their heart set in the barb.

I'm interested in rangers, perhaps druids or wizards — but I know these two are harder for a first timer (I'm not a complete noob though). So I'll wait to see what others choose.

Inaleth, anything to do with magic is more complicated. The best advice is to just play what you are going to want to invest time into. If your invested in your character, you wont mind spending the time to learn the rules.

Silver Crusade

I just downloaded the Anniversary Player's Guide. Gonna read that, and I'll be back with my character concept. Looking forward to this one!

Silver Crusade

So I'm starting to think along the lines of an Inquisitor, probably with that "Scholar of the Ancients" trait.

I don't know if I have the "anniversary " guide. I have whatever I got with the highest level of the Humble Bundle. It's called the Advanced Players Guide on my download list. Is that it?

That's a separate rulebook; they're not the same thing. This is the Anniversary Edition Player's Guide.

OK. Hopefully I can get the download - site is still a bit wonky. Also, I hope the rules aren't too different from the normal ones as I am still learning :)

Regarding the download, a google search will find you a copy much quicker; it's a free download from Paizo, so you shouldn't feel any misgivings searching elsewhere for the download. You're looking for "rise of the runelords anniversary player's guide"

And don't worry about the rules; it's just a supplement specifically for this adventure. It gives some character creation advice, some campaign-specific traits, and local info about the area. Other than the traits, you'll still get your rules where you always got them.

Got it downloaded. Spent a bit of time researching tonight. There is A LOT of information just in these few books!

I would like to roll a Gnome Wizard if that's OK.

Still working on the details.

Ok I have pretty much everything ready. How does character creation work with forum play? Is there a sheet or format I shoud be using? Does something get posted for or sent to the GM?
Thanks.

Silver Crusade

I found this guide in the forums; it seems to be a highly-regarded method for documenting a character in your alias/profile. The GM will have to say for sure, though.

Looking through this thread, I'm seeing:
Barbarian (R2D20)
Ranger (Inareth - or Druid or Wizard)
Gnome Wizard (Adaram)

I was first thinking Inquisitor, but now might be leaning Cleric; in either case I'm thinking of a Ranged build so I'd be more of a support character. That would leave us needing (based on the recommendations from the Player's Guide) at Rogue (or other scout/trapfinder) type to cover all of our bases. Do we have a fifth player yet?

Ok, then I'll definitely create a druid, so we have at least some healing element. A rogue for the final player and we'd have a classic party.

edit: hmm, if zinzarin will be a cleric, then I'll pick the ranger instead. Both classes are cool!

No we don't have a fifth player yet. Just gave the recruitment thread a little push.

And yes all characters will be made into an alias. To create an alias you will click on the My account link at the top of the page. If you scroll down on the page you will see a box that says MESSAGEBOARD ALIASES. In that box there should be a button that says create new alias. Click that button and then you name your character and then you can follow the character creation guide that was linked to.

You do not have to use the character sheet that person suggests. If you have hero lab you can output your character sheet from there and then just copy and paste into your alias.

Male Human Monk(Monk of the Sacred Mountain) 14

Here is a sample character alias.

Anyone have any other questions I can help with. Sorry for going silent I usually don't post much after 4 PM CST Monday-Thursday.

Male

Yo, just joined up. I have some experience building characters (many bored nights with nothing to do) so what roled do we need to fill? I lean towards leader and support/battlefield control.

They need a face(rogue/bard)

Silver Crusade

Welcome inxpitter. We currently seem to have a Barbarian, Ranger, and Wizard. I've been working on a Cleric, which leaves us with a Rogue/scout/trapfinder as our primary need. If that's not something you're excited by, I'd give up Cleric so you could have that (or similar) for support/battlefield control, and I can play the sneak.

DM, if that's the way we go, is Unchained okay for a Rogue?

Male

Sure, I'll play a rogue. I'll post some more details later tonight.

Hopefully later tonight I will have time to finish up my sheet. This is all new ground for me, so I am having to do a lot of research and reading. Thanks for your patience!

I just renamed my char, which now has the mechanics filled out. Tomorrow comes the backstory and more spoilers, so stuff will be easier to look up.

Male

A couple questions....

Is Unchained rogue acceptable, stick with normal rogue, or my choice?

Is it alright if I optimize a bit? (not to much, but I dread playing a glass cannon that can't do anything.)

unchained is fine and you can optimize a little

This is zinzarin, reporting in as Rak Obal, dwarven bartender and Inquisitor. I will work on a backstory and get that up tomorrow.

Did you have any particular adventure hooks in mind, or just make somebody who has a reason to be in Sandpoint?

Male Human Knife Master (rogue) 1

And I think I'm done with Character creation (awaiting approval of course). I decided to split between skills and throwing knife (knife master archetype).

If you see anything wrong, please tell me so I can change it.

Hey all. Just to let you know, this is going really slowly for me. I am learning a lot from scratch, and frankly, the Character Sheet is complicated, especially if I want to understand it!

I downloaded the Hero Lab thing, and I think it just makes it more complicated for me. For example, I can't find "Traits" anywhere! I feel like I just need to keep at it manually. I'll get there; I just hope you all don't mind bearing with me.

Thanks.

PC-GEN is a bit better, since it both guides you and has an export option tailored for this forum. Hero lab has that disabled in the demo version.

Remember to use one campaign trait.

Where do "Traits" show up on the Character Sheet that I took from the Core Rules book?

I'd put it under special abilities.

Inside HeroLab, you'll find "Traits" on the "Feats" tab, but I'm not sure if they're enabled by default or not; they are an optional rule. On the paper character sheet, you'll record your traits--likewise--in the Feats section of the sheet; traits are essentially mini-feats, so that's the logical place.

And don't get discouraged! You're not making this character in a vacuum; we're all willing to help. Post any other questions or hurdles you encounter and we'll help you get through them.

Thanks for the replies about the Traits. I am sure I will need more help, and will reach out when I do. I am not going to use Hero Lab - it seems too complicated for me right now, and I will learn more by doing things manually.

When I am done, I will post up my character sheet and you folks can tell me all my mistakes :)

I think I am on to Feats and Spells, then equipment next, so I feel like I am getting close.

At first level you don't need to roll for it, just take the max. Also be careful with buying too many items, as you can get encumbered.

Oh right I should tell you guys I don't run with encumbrance or coin weight(for those of you using herolab). At first level I don't see this being a huge issue but if I find your abusing my generosity(IE carrying everything including the kitchen sink around with your characters) I will reinstate it but I've not had a huge problem with people taking advantage of the system.

Ariza I don't know if you have been told but this is an awesome resource as it has all the feats, spells, equipment, traits, ect listed on it so you don't have to scroll through .pdf's of the books. Since your finding the process a little overwhelming(which is totally understandable with SO many options) I'd suggest sticking to the stuff found in the core rule book only except for traits as those weren't added until the Advanced players guide came out so thats where you will find the non campaign specific trait.

Again as others have said we understand this process is A LOT when you first get started. I agree that using just the paper copy of the character sheet from the CRB is the best bet until you get a little more comfortable.

I have had a look at PC-Gen and it looks a lot simpler. I am not done, but certainly it has gone a long way to helping me with what I have seen.

One question, though. I want to take the Pyromaniac Trait from the RoR guide, but I can't seem to find it anywhere in PC-Gen. For now I have chose "Gifted Adept" instead. I do have the RoR book loaded into the program, so that's not why.

Any suggestions?

I'd just leave it empty and add it manually later. It's all text in the end, remember?

My backstory is done, but I didn't expose everything. Off to buy more arrows! :D

Pyromaniac is actually from Advanced Players Guide so ignore what I wrote above. I re-loaded PC-Gen with "Pathfinder RPG Core Supplements, and the RoR book, but still can't find the skill.

Sorry for pulling this discussion into a PC-GEN support query :(

**Edit** Good idea, Denche - I will just manually edit the output! DUH!

Btw, how much micromanaging will we have to do? Eg. daily food&liquids intake and that type of stuff?

Also, I realised I haven't said this yet — thanks for volunteering Mathpro!

I'm not supper concerned with tracking of resources but you will need to have rations and a water skin listed on your sheet. If you go weeks in the wilds then I expect survival checks to supplement your rations and that but I am not up everyone's butt about that kind of stuff.

And not an issue volunteering.

I was planning to have Rak forage for food along the way, but that's because he was encumbered carrying it; I'll add some rations when I get home later. As for water, I've got my mug and a Create Water orison; never thirsty!

So I probably should have done this already but it just dawned on me you guys have no idea about who I am so I'll write up a little intro.

I've been playing Pathfinder since 2009 but I've been doing table top gaming for about 15 years or so. I've played the Final Fantasy pen and paper game, D&D, Arduin, Shadowrun, and custom games to name a few of the systems other than Pathfinder I've played. I also have an on again and off again relationship with Magic the Gathering. I also enjoy video games, Dragon Age and Final Fantasy being my favorate series. I've had the pleasure of introducing two of my step children to the hobby as well as my wife and my sister in law so I am no stranger to running with new players.

I am currently running eight other games on these boards but a couple of them are just about dead. You guys are my special table because your all new to forum games and/or pathfinder. I chose to run Raise of the Runelords because it was the first adventure Paizo created and was also the first adventure I ran my wife through and she loved cutting her teeth on it. Unfortunatly she never got to finish it because that campaign had to stop due to a move. We'll see if this game actually gets to the completion point...18 levels on a forum game is unheard of for most groups but we'll see.

Male CG Dwarf Inquisitor/Slayer 3 | HP: 21/23 | AC: 18 (12 Tch, 16 Fl) | CMB: +5, CMD: 17 (15 Fl) | F: +6, R: +5, W: +7 | Init: +6 | Perc: +9, SM +10 | Speed 20ft | Active conditions: none

Thanks for the introduction, DM Mathpro. Should we call you DM, or Mathpro? :)

My introduction: I've been playing tabletop RPGs since 1st Ed D&D, though I stopped playing D&D around the release of 3.5 (bought the books, never played 'em). My early heyday was 2nd Ed; at that time, I was also playing the entire Palladium suite of games, Call of Cthulhu, and other one-offs (Shadowrun, White Wolf, Warhammer) here and there. My first introduction to Pathfinder was with the beta Playtest; I attempted to get a regular tabletop game going in a Forgotten Realms setting with that, but it never took off, and I really didn't RPG again after that until last fall. At that time, I started running the Reign of Winter adventure path at home; that's been meeting about monthly, and is going well.

When I saw the Humble Bundle, I saw a great opportunity to own (and thus, be able to use officially) a ton of books. (Seriously, that was an amazing deal to get "legal" if you hadn't been playing that way up until then.) While I was waiting for the book downloads to not work (still waiting...) I discovered these forums and a light went off. I'm *so* excited to play here; I think forum play has the potential to be better at the "role" part of RPG than even tabletop gaming.

So, thanks for having me! I'm also excited that you chose Rise of the Runelords as it's such an iconic adventure path. I'm looking forward to a great introduction to forum gaming.

PS:

Woah, the expected end level is 18? That's a lot of hide and bone to chop through. :)

My only pnp-ish experience is with Warhammer. We disbanded in the middle of the first session. Earlier I helped develop some Gothic (the game) based forum roleplaying system, but it didn't take off. I'm a great fan of the Infinity engine games (Planescape: Torment, Baldur's gate, Icewind Dale), so for the past eight years, I've contributed to the development of GemRB, a reimplementation and upgrade of said engine. Hardly anyone roleplays here, even in the capital, so online and pbp it is.

Yes expected end level is 17-18 depending on how things go. When I played through this my group ended at 17 and when I ran it the group had just reached level 11 when we had to disband. I miss my level 17 barbarian very much...he could do about 200 damage a round...and he wasn't even optimized. He had over 300 HP as well which pissed our wizard off. "He took how much damage and is still up and swinging? That would have killed me 3 times over..." Our cleric HATED my character going as far as removing his mini from the mat one session and replacing it with a box of bandaids and then turning to me and going "That is all I am to you...a giant box of bandaids...did it ever occur to you that I would like to do something else in a round than heal your ass for 100-200 points of damage? I'm all out of spells here...dodge something for christ sake"

That was a great group...it also lead to my barbarain being swung around like a rag doll by his leg while the archer "accidentally" peppered him with arrows. He said he was trying to shoot the thing that had me by the leg but...I don't buy it lol.
