Magical Knack and Eldritch Heritage

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Do the two work together?

No. MK boosts your caster level, while EH lets you be treated as having sorceror levels for the purposes of certain bloodline powers. They don't stack, as far as I can see.

Grand Lodge

Is there a way to boost your effective sorcerer level for eldritch heritage?

Only Greater Eldritch Heritage, as far as I know.

No. Even PrCs that advance casting don't normally advance the sorcerer's bloodline level.

As to boosting it, I believe there is an item that raises one's effective sorcerer level by 4. I see no reason why a character with this line of feats could not also benefit from it.

Robe of Arcane Heritage I think it is called treat your sorcerer levels as 4 higher for all bloodline effects and powers.

Can someone clarify for me the difference between "Caster Level" and "Sorcerer/Oracle Level?"

I had difficulty arise from the same core issue-- My GM ruled that Magical Knack raised my "Caster Level" but not my "Oracle Level" regarding a revelation.

The revelation has range, DC, and damage all being level dependent, but again my GM ruled that it was dependent on my Oracle Level, not my Caster Level. And Magical Knack didn't apply.

There seems to be consensus here that a Sorcerer/Oracle's levels are not the same thing as his Caster Levels.

OK, but why?

To my mind, the anywhere the rules say "Caster Level" it's a shortcut instead of specifically listing all the possible types of Spellcaster Levels the rule could apply to.

But there seems to be a strong wave of disagreement with my thinking. Can anyone 'splain?

Thanks

The Exchange

The major difference is that Oracle/Sorcerer/Whatever caster levels can be advanced by PrCs. This, however, does not give you class levels in the class Oracle/Sorcerer/Whatever, meaning you do not get an increase in bloodline abilities, revelations, etc.

The rules use the word 'level' like a bad speaker uses the word 'um'.

There are the following levels associated here:

1. Level in the class itself
2. Levels in other classes that stack with that for the purpose of bloodlines, etc (dragon disciple).
3. Levels that count towards what spells a caster can cast (using the spells per day & spells known tables).
4. Levels that count for spells being cast (concentration checks, duration, etc).

Magical knack advances #4 and none of the others.

A PrC that 'advances casting' advances #3 and #4, and in rare circumstances advances #2.

Only levels in the class advance #1 (though some items will advance a class feature, such as the bloodline.. the item is mentioned in this thread).

Really Paizo would be well served by altering their product away from 3e by the simple acquisition and implementation of a thesaurus.

So a question that crossed my mind is this, what if a summoner at level 2 has 2 levels of druid, and has magical knack summoner? With the +2 to summoner effective level, your eidolon would still see you as 4th level summoner because of that, and it's level would be effected. While you don't gain any of the bonuses from the levels, your summon would.
