As the group peers into the room you get a better look at the spider. Large silver fangs protrude from a dark purple head segment. A few red hairs accent the much larger black thorax section in back. It is roughly the size of an adult dwarf.
The little kitsune dashes into the room and the spider's eight red eyes dart directly towards her. It moves to stride along its web but catches the crossbow bolt in the thorax and lets out an ear-piercing shriek.

Gil, Bakko, Korum, and Endir are up!
| GM PaleDim |
Endir's arrow penetrates the spiders head. As Korum rushes into the room the large arachnid rolls off of its web and onto the floor with a solid thump.
Victory!
Combat over! Out of iniative.
So, poor initiative really did that fella in. I just hope you're all not using up your good rolls now! Muahahaha.
Where to next?
| GM PaleDim |
As your party moves into the Western wing you find it mostly impassable due to rubble. There is just enough space to move through and find a doorway to the east, leading to the small area at the center of the tower.
Opening that door you find a spiral stairway leading upward through the center of the tower. However it is entirely clogged with rubble and cannot be ascended from here.
Gil Vladinescu
|
Gil returns to the previous room to look for another doorway or a way upstairs.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
If we can't find another way up from in here we might need to head outside and look for another entrance
| GM PaleDim |
Sent over by Hoshi during the outage. For her original previewed post, see here.
Hoshi peers in the room, and the stairwell. Seeing that there's no way up from here, she shrugs.
"Looks like there's no way up from in here. Let's head back outside and figure out the best way to climb up to the second level from there."
Hoshi heads back outside and looks around, curious if it would be possible to climb the highest parts of the rubble and get up to the second level, or if we're going to need a rope and a grappling hook...
| GM PaleDim |
After the party finds passage in neither the last room nor blocked stairwell they begin to backtrack, with Gil and Endir searching the prior rooms along the way. Hoshi heads directly back outside and when the rest of the group joins her it seems she has in fact found a possible way up. It seems that rubble from the collapsed wing of the tower provides a tough, but possible climb up to the second level.
Gil Vladinescu
|
Looks like we climb up. Let's let those who are a little more resilient lead the way
Gil will wait for one of the melee folk to head up first, then climb up behind them. I'm pretty busy tomorrow so I'll do my climb roll now.
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15
Korum of the Silver-Eyed Wolf

"Wait here." The orc removes his armor and places it in his pack. He then begins to climb up to the next level of the tower.
Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
After reaching the top, he takes a quick look around before donning his armor again.

Hoshi raises an eyebrow when Korum begins to disrobe. "Well, aren't you easy?" she jokes. "I didn't even have to spring for dinner."
With a yipping laugh she scampers up the rubble behind Korum (after he tells them its safe).
Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 16
| GM PaleDim |
Gil, Korum, and Hoshi take the bare footholds in stride and slowly make their way up to the second level. The other half of the party see them disappear over the edge of the next level.

Korum of the Silver-Eyed Wolf
|
The orc takes an appraising look at the rogue. "Dinner huh?" Korum takes a moment to seriously consider the offer. "Well let's finish this first. Who knows, you might even get breakfast out of it too."
Ninura Hoshi
|
Hoshi curls her lip up into a wicked grin. With a swish of her two tails she scampers over to the doors and examines them for traps. Then she leans her ear towards them, listening for signs of what might be beyond each door.
Perception (north door): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Or 26 vs. traps.
Perception (south door): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Or 26 vs. traps.

Two double-20's in a row... wonder if dicerolling is broken right now.

Endir Feyim
|
After everyone (except Bakko) goes up, Endir tries to scamper up, but fall back down.
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
"Oops."
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
"AAARGH!!!"
Endir is certainly aggravated by this failure, and continues trying.
climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Endir desperately tries to come up with an excuse for this.
"AHA!!! This wall is a construct! And it hates me!"
climb #4: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
climb part 2!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Endir collapses onto the next floor, gasping heavily.
"But I managed to beat its fury." He wheezes.
| GM PaleDim |
Since it is the weekend I'm going to give Bakko some more time to rejoin us. I'll move us forward tomorrow evening if he hasn't posted. I've sent him a PM.
Yeah, that would be a drag. Let me go ahead and reward those rolls by changing up the behavior of... something.
As you check the doors there is seemingly no activity in the rooms beyond. However, as you linger a bit at the Northwest door you hear very faint, dull thuds that sound like feet taking several steps, seemingly away from the door. You think you may have heard even fainter scratching sounds. Claws on the feet?
Endir has been watching his teammates scale the wall, sitting in some awkward position with one leg pinned by the rest of his body. When he gets up to take his turn a pervasive tingling sensation and dull pain shoot throughout his leg. Smiling faintly, rather than admitting this he makes several clumsy attempts at employing this recovering leg while scampering up the rubble. Finally, he makes it.

Excellent. So then that is everybody but Bakko. I had intended to give him until the end of the weekend... and then the site went down again. I'm still going to move us forward late tonight because we've lost so much time already, so start deciding which door you want to go through.
Ninura Hoshi
|
Hoshi draws her rapier and opens the southern door.
| GM PaleDim |
As everybody ponders which door to take, Bakko scrambles up the rubble and appears at the back of the group.
You all move cautiously through the southwest door, led by Hoshi keeping her eye out for traps. This room appears empty and unused at the moment.

Ninura Hoshi

"What?" Hoshi asks.
Gil Vladinescu
|
Gil dashes up to Hoshi and stops him, urgently whispering
Hoshi! It looks like there is some kind of trap ahead, right at the entrance to the room. I also can see some footprints ahead....perhaps reptilian....which might belong to the ones who wish to keep this room protected
| GM PaleDim |
What next? Attempt disable device or circle back?
Ninura Hoshi
|
Hoshi pulls out her thieves tools and tries to disable the trap.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
| GM PaleDim |
Hoshi seems to find the line that connects a plate on the floor to the arrow, but even her tiny fingers can't squeeze into the gaps to unhook it. She doesn't disable it but thankfully doesn't tense the line enough to trigger it either. She looks up and the arrow is still resting gently in its tube in the wall nearby. She might still be able to get in there and undo it safely...
Did not succeed, but didn't trigger it. So you clearly didn't miss by 5 or more :)
Ninura Hoshi
|
Hoshi tries again!
Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
...And if she still didn't trigger it, again!
Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
| GM PaleDim |
Hoshi continues to fiddle with the trap. Just when she thinks she's going to reach the hook that connects the arrow, the line goes taut and she hears a distinct sproing! She sees it in slow motion but cannot stop it...
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
Arrow damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
She tries to dart away but the arrow lodges in her shoulder.
7 damage, Hoshi (ouch)
I assume some healing is in order. What next?
Korum of the Silver-Eyed Wolf
|
By the gods! I could have done that. "Good effort. Shake it off. You'll get the next one. Don't think that scratch is getting you outta dinner."
Just realize I don't have any healing. I will have to get a wand once we get back to town.
Ninura Hoshi
|
Hoshi curses loudly. She lets out a yipping scoff and shakes her head at herself.
"This room had better be worth it," she mutters.
She grins at Korum and EIche. "Thanks. You're free to laugh, you know. I would."
Hoshi heads into the room and looks around.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 (Or +1 higher vs. traps)
Yup, she is on the ball!
| GM PaleDim |
Racks for weapons line the walls of this chamber; above the racks hang various shields, pieces of armor, weapons, and standards on display. Most of the racks are empty, but a few weapons remain in place. A horrible stench fills the room as well, akin to the smell of rotten eggs mixed with the reek of an open sewer.
It quickly becomes apparent where the stench is coming from as two young troglodytes immediately turn their intention on the intruder. They take an immediately hostile stance at you as the stench wafts through the door and washes over the party.
