GM Zoomba I think you misunderstand Bewildering Koan. The Barbazu can do nothing this turn. So it also can't run around killing poor helpless Gnomes...Here's the evidence

Looking at the link you are correct. I was reading 'action' as the game term action (as in he couldn't full-attack/move that turn, but SKR was a developer at the time so that clarification is fine. Horribly written for what was a developer, but fine :p

In that case you were not injured, and it would still be five feet back. As a result, Cirri if you would like to move five feet closer to it that is fine: otherwise I'll keep you where you are.

As most of the party readies to strike back at the fiend Nergi draws first blood, her smite-aided arrow cutting through its skin as Firaxus' song rings out behind her.

Gotcha Rika. I was assuming pounce, but it does look like that wouldn't have lined up for a charge. That said....

The combined flurry of blows and arrows from Nergi, Cirri, and Rika and Pratts prove too much for the hobbled Barbazu. It slumps to the ground, bleeding out a black blood as it lays still.

As it drops, the book sitting open on the altar beyond shuts close with a THWUMP, and simultaneously the flames licking the wall behind fade into nothingness.

An eerie silence descends upon the room.

COMBAT OVER! and with no casualties.

Right now there is still the strange symbol on the floor, a sealed book on the altar further in (with a dagger nearby as well), and three bodies: two women atop each other to the northwest and a face-down male to the south-west.

The symbol on the floor is clearly of infernal origin, though while Firaxus recognizes a few symbols within it related to binding most of its exact nature is unknown to him. Up at the altar, Wadi notices nothing special about the knife itself. The book however, radiates a strong near-blinding aura of abjuration and conjuration. Even before he draws upon his own magic to inspect it, the mage can feel an air of wrongness surrounding the now-closed text.

Looking at the three bodies, Nergi is saddened to find the the two woman to the north have expired. Slashing wounds cover both bodies, and one clutches a strange, but sharp-looking coral dagger.

To the south however, the halfling finds hope. The man is still faintly breathing (though unconscious and hurt himself)!

Master Mido notes that the symbol adorning the floor bears much in common with many summoning circles, and there are scattered runes keyed to trapping and binding effects. However, the positioning of the sigils and the spiral are bridged slightly outward: it is meant to be linked to an outside component in order to function.

As Nergi binds her spirit to the unconscious man, her draining vitality has the desired effect. The man stirs, opening his eyes and propping himself up.

Scanning the room in alarm, the figure gives an anguished cry as he sees the other bodies. ”Lauralei! No. Good girl, loyal. And Nicola. Why would you…how?” Finally registering the crowd still standing in the room, he blinks and turns to the party.

”You, who are you? Path-Pathfinders? Did Amara…are you here for the book? Too late I fear. Or maybe not too late, need to think…How long? What time is it?” He seems a bit disoriented, but growing flusher by the second even as Nergi pales.

"The Celestial Song? Pathfinders? Bearded Devil! Yes," the man starts to calm his breathing and stands, brushing his dirty coat as he does so.

"I am Yargos Gill, yes. And the fact you're hear means that Lauralei delivered her message. She always was dependable..." A pall comes over his face again before he shakes it off.

"So, I'm not sure exactly how much your 'captain' got across to you or not, but I and my assistants had recently purchased that book over there" he nods to the tome on the altar "the Infernal Incantation and its counterpart the Celestial Song. The work was slow and difficult, but earlier this evening I and Nicola and Lauralei had a breakthrough, discoveirng a way to unlock the secrets of how the Incantation could aid in trapping fiends."

"We...erred in our excitement." Gill says, his eyes trying to avoid glancing towards the corner where the two women lie. "We did not predict that the Incantiation itself was a gateway to a prison plane. the ritual went awry, and the bindings on the book loosened. I realized we may have weakened the protections keeping the devils and other monsters caged, and so sent the others to get help. Your Society has dealt with situations of mine in the past so I thought of you: Lauralei went to your Grand Lodge to ask for aid while Nicola took the Celestial Song a delivered it to your ally Ollysta Zadrian - a backup plan in case we failed and she could discover a method to reverse the ritual."

He sighs and puts his head in his hands. "Of course it wasn't until after I sent them away that I realized the most likely truth: the bindings of the Infernal Incantation can only be reinforced by pairing it with the Celestial Song. they resonate with eahc other in some strange way - I've yet to figure out how but their bound together in history for a reason. But before I could try to act on my hunch I was struck from behind. Everything went black, and well..."

Yargos Gill slumps back down to the floor. "Again and again. My keeps bringing nothing but death, nothing but misery. I should have said no, and I swear when this is over I'm not touching this kind of research again."

"Well I certainly hope that you learn your lesson and take it to heart! Iomedae watch over the souls of your assistants."

Firaxus shakes his head, and plods closer to the Infernal Incantation. As he looks upon its cover, he considers the fate of these two. So blinded by his greed for power and knowledge that he fails to realize his actions carry consequences!

"Maybe it was busy trying to do something even worse..." Cirri shakes her head. "Let's get the Celestial Song from Ollysta Zadrian as soon as we can."

Rika has a point, but...we gotta seal this book shut!

An Enkindled Carnival

"I don't know why I'm still alive." Yargos seems almost as disturbed by this as you are. "But time is of the essence! Our ritual made the Infernal Incantation resurgent, but even then I expected us to have more time. If one of its prisoners was already released, the wards around it are unraveling even faster than I expected."

He moves towards the alatar, and behind it. Fishing out two flasks filled with a gel-like orange substance he holds them out. "Here. Take these. Vials of align weapon. I made sure to have some on hand in case a minor outsider came calling during part of the ritual. Clearly they weren't of any use to me."

"Now go! Find Ollysta: I've heard lately she's been in Gilltown frequently buying up necromantic objects to get them off the streets. Reach her and the Song and pray to the gods she's discovered the solution to this."

"Oh, and do NOT unseal the Incantation, no matter what. It's shut now: it must remain so until you can bring it to Ollysta."

Also, as I missed this the last post:

Cirri also examines the coral dagger held by Nicola. It isn't magical, but it's unusual form would likely pick up a pretty penny from a weapons dealer.

"Fine, then let's be off!" Yargos Gill agrees as he heads out with you out of the home. "Once we get to Gilltown we can spread out. The place isn't exactly orderly and we have to get ot Ollysta before anything else happens."

Leaving Yargo's estate and making your way through Absalom, dinnertime appears to be over as the hustle and bustle of Absalom’s Eastgate district is nearly deafening. Hundreds of locals are on the streets, moving from the residential neighborhoods towards places of business and leisure. In the distance the sounds of chattering voices, stamping feet, and even the occasional cry of traveling elephants break through the low din.

The noises recede into the background as Yargos Gill pushes ahead into a side street alley. "Here, this path should go straight to Gilltown. Bypasses Azlant Road which will be swarming tonight. Is should only..." The old man cuts off as stops halfway in the alley by an open refuse bin to catch his breath.
