"Nooo! Not good!" Kuran cries as he pulls out his longsword, and starts to closely monitor the beetle's behaviour, trying to discern whether it feels threatened or is hungry.
Move action: draw longsword; standard action: studied target

![]() |

The cold ray finds its mark this time and splashes across the beetle, which rears up in pain.
1d20 ⇒ 19
Nijena and Blossym!

![]() |

Nijena moves in and slashes at the bug, splitting its exoskeleton to reveal the gooey innards of the beetle. But still it stands and fights!
Blossym double-moves into the room, ready to strike the bug!
The beetle chooses from its targets and bites at Blossym! But the mandibles go wide and cannot grab the nimble halfling.
1 Blossym, 2 Nijena: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Bite!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 damage, MISS
Party up!

![]() |

Oh, and a stabilization check for Darren for that last round, please.

![]() |

Do you need to roll a stabilize check on the round you go unconscious?
I'll hold off on rolling my stabilize until i know if someone is going to heal me or not.

![]() |

The round passed and none was forthcoming. I understand you holding off, though.

![]() |

Darren, stabilization checks are made "on the character's next turn", so yes, on that round.
Tessa fires another ray at the beetle, again splashing over it! Its features slow down from the chill!
Fort: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Kuran moves in and helps staunch some of Darren's wounds to keep him from bleeding out.
Blossym and Nijena

![]() |

Still without a flank, Blossym steps and strikes the bug, hoping to end it. But she cannot find the mark!
Stab!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
The beetle, slowed by the last spell, takes another bite at the party!
1 Blossym, 2 Nijena: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Bite on Blossym!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 MISS
Party up!

![]() |

And with a final swing, the beetle's legs are severed and it slowly slips into death.
Out of combat!
Looking about the room, it looks as though this beetle was preparing a nest for its soon-to-be-laid eggs and that this dead villager was going to be the first meal of its children. But now that will never happen because mommy got killed. Sad times.
Anyway! A door leads to the south while a collapsed passageway would have led to the east, but alas that is not an option now.

![]() |

That puts me exactly at full! Whoo-hoo! Thanks Nijena.
Darren shakes his head as if shaking water out of his hair as the healing rushes over him like a blast of ice. He gives Nijena a grin, and for the first time since his tranformation his resemblance to his human form is apparent. "Couldn't keep your hands off me, eh?" He stands up and retrieves his weapons, then gives Nijena an earnest look. "Thanks, by the way."
I think that is all of her heals for the day though. :(
"Which way, now?"

![]() |

May have to find some rooms to barricade ourselves in if this gets any worse.
Tessa's head perks up. Maybe we can rest in the pit of pillows!
Bending down Tessa inspects the poor villager for any signs of equipment.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

![]() |

As stated before, we're all wandless.
Glad the beetle met its match, and Darren is up on his feet, Kuran swipes the sweat off his brow. "Too close for c-comfort!" he says with a nervous chuckle, "this place is giving me the creeps!"
Kuran proceeds to investigate what he can find from the room.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

![]() |

There is nothing of value on the man, though his shoulders show wrinkles indicating he was carrying a heavy pack. Probably one of the ones you've already recovered.
Oh, and you realize in the silence of the battle that the screams have started up again from the room behind you.

![]() |

Kuran jumps at the sudden sounds. "I really want to just find th-that eternal flame and leave!" he whimpers.
Driven by fear of everything, Kuran walks over to the door and tries to open it.
Is that a staircase in the room east of the door?

![]() |

Remnant of using a pre-printed map. It's considered collapsed in the module.
As Kuran opens the door, the bitter smell of smoke filters into the room. Seems someone forgot to turn the stove off in the next room.

![]() |

"Smoke? Who on earth would burn something in a closed space?" Kuran ponders out loud, trying to peer through the smoke. If unable to see what's behind the curtain of smoke, he takes a deep breath and advances slowly.
31/32 rounds of air left.

![]() |

A short hallway leads into the next room. Heading into the room proper, you see the source.
The remains of a small fire smolder in the center of this broad chamber, letting off a plume of oily smoke. Fed by a heap of burning gear, debris, and more than few bones, the fire casts a flickering light across the walls of this room, partially obscured by the veil of smoke.

![]() |

Hard to tell through the smoke, a closer look and a heal check would be needed. Also it is highly unlikely this is the everflame.

![]() |

Tessa moves in and, as she inspects the bones and embers, which seem totally mundane, actually, the smoke billows out in an inky cloud! The dark cloud forms itself into a loose form and utters in a cruel whisper "Burn with meeeee.... BURRRRNNN WIIITH MEEEE..." and reaches out a clawed hand! Tessa and Kuran, however, are able to react faster!
Darren: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Kuran: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Nijena: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Tessa: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Shadow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Kuran tie breaker: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Shadow tie breaker: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Everyone but Darren, upon entering the room, notices a glint of metal in the embers. Indeed it is a dagger which seems to be giving off a light of its own. (Read here: it's a +1 dagger) However, it is in the flames so might carry some consequences for picking it up.
Tessa and Kuran are up
Darren: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Kuran: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Nijena: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Tessa: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

![]() |

Ooh, an animated gif!
Knowledge (religion) + Monster Lore: 1d20 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 3 = 15
With frightened eyes Kuran points at the figure and screams. "A shadow! Aaaargh!" But unlike his normal behavior he dashes over to the ashes and grabs the glinting metal object without hesitation. "Magic weapon! Must use magic weapons!"
Move action: movement 10 ft.; standard action: pick up dagger. Note! Kuran has fire resistance 5.

1d6 ⇒ 4
The flames lick harmlessly at Kuran's hand as he grabs the blade. It creates an odd glow in the smoky haze.
Tessa is up.

![]() |

Tessa stumbles back away from the shadowy creature and nearly falls over. hearing Kuran she quickly hurls a ball of ice at the creature.
Snoball: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
DC 14 Fort Save or Staggered from the snowball for 1 round.
Separate DC 13 Fort Save or slowed as per the slow spell for 1 round for rime blooded.

![]() |

Kuran watches the shadow, frozen in fear, knowing he's the closest target. He begs for a miracle, reciting a short prayer in whisper.
"Ōh, katti yokka kānti, nāku dhairyaṁ man̄jūru."

![]() |

The ice ball dissipates in the creature, seeming to chill it just a tiny little bit.
The shadow turns to its first victim of the day and swipes an ethereal claw at Kuran! The tiefling *barely* manages to get out of the way!
Touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Party up!

![]() |

Darren dances around the creature and then feints with his rapier.
Acrobatics, avoid AoO: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
rapier, aid Kuran's attack, beat AC10: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

The space you are occupying currently is inhabited by fire and embers. Are you sure you want to end movement there?

![]() |

I concluded from "The flames lick harmlessly at Kuran's hand as he grabs the blade" that the fire was illusory. Of course, now I remember that he has fire resistance...
Readjusted my position. Using the polearm instead of the rapier, which unfortunately means I don't beat AC10 to aid.

![]() |

"Get it off, get if off of me!" Kuran cries, watching the shadow a moment with fear in his eyes, then wildly flailing the dagger at its face.
Magic dagger attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Damage breakdown: +2 from strenght, +1 from magic?, and +1 from studied target
Move action: Studied target; Standard action: attack with magic dagger

![]() |

I figured you didn't mean to, hence why I pointed it out and didn't just deal 1d6 fire damage, haha.
Darren moves into position to try to aid his friend, but can't seem to create enough of a distraction.
Meanwhile Tessa backs up further and fires around the corner, trying to hit the shade. Sadly, the corner, smoke, and just bad aim for this shot cause her to miss the magic bolt.
Kuran, however, has better luck as the dagger's short blade glows brightly as it hits the shadow, its magic aiding the battle against the smoky creature.
Blossyn and Nijena!

![]() |

Nijena moves up to Kuran and swings her sword at the shadowy creature. "Stop harming him, you evil creature!" Nijena shouts.
Longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

![]() |

Nijena moves in and swipes at the air near the shadow, unable to connect with its smokey form.
Blossym takes inventory of herself and realizes she has nothing to bring to this fight, but takes after Darren's example and tries to move into position distract the thing!
The shadow swipes a claw through Kuran! As it moves through his body, it seems to sap him of his strength and drain his very soul!
1 Kuran, 2 Nijena: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Strength damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Ouch!
Party up!

![]() |

"Nooo!" Kuran cries, trying once more to strike the shadow with his now-feeble strength.
Magic dagger attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 - 3 = 4
Feeling he is now completely useless in this fight, he steps back and offers the dagger to someone with a shaking hand.
Only Blossym's next to me, curses, the dagger's medium sized and too large for her. Darren's too far away. And Nijena should immediately put Smite Evil to work.

![]() |

Blossym grabs the dagger and passes it on to Darren.
Two move actions. What was that about in the way? =P

![]() |

Darren leaps over the firepit and circles around it to attack the shadow from behind!
this is the part where I again regret my choice of archetype--I only have Weapon Finesse when using Rapiers
Is anyone going to try to aid either of our attack rolls?
If the shadow tries to attack Darren he will use a Panache point to Parry and Riposte
Round 2 action:
move around to flank with paladin
readied attack to attack shadow as soon as Paladin (or anyone else) 5' steps into flanking (EDIT: not that it matters. dice gods hate us)
Rolls:
Acrobatics, avoid fire and aoo: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
magic dagger, attack, power attack, flanking: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 1 + 2 = 6 for magic, slashing: 1d4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6
