Dot in, folks, then head to discussion.

... the blacksmith hammers the weapon on the anvil preparing for... wait - how did appear at a smithy anyway? And why is the sound not metallic, but the sound of wood? You half-open one eye. You could swear the sound was there just now, but seems gone now. You close your eyes again.

THUD THUD THUD - "Wake UP!"

You consciousness pours back into your awakened state - No, not a dream., it insists. Your eyes both open now, and your body springs up and - in an almost autonomous manner - takes a beeline towards the door. There is another loud bang, this time just one though, and from within the confines of your room. It seems to have happened just about the time a dull pain appeared in one of your toes. You blame the damn table in the way, and your mouth loudly supports this notion.

"What did you just call me?", the voice from the other side of the door asks. You gather whatever mental resources you have scattered about your head, and explain to the voice that you hit something on the way.

You open the door halfway, and poke your head outside. A large man stands there. Chain mail, a small shield, a spear in hand, and a short sword on the belt. A guard of sorts? He passes you a wax-sealed scroll: "Two hours. You can read the rest of it there.", he points towards the paper as you awkwardly take it from his hand. "I suggest you pour a bucket of water on your head and get packin'. Time's wastin'."

Once the man's duty was fulfilled, he turns around on one foot and walks away into the dark hall.

You look at the scroll, puzzled - the was seal shows the Glyph of the Open Road. This must be from one of your captains. In a matter of seconds, the seal is broken and the scroll happily reveals its secrets:

Pathfinder,

I will be brief - time is of the essence. There seems to have been a development in Oppara that will require subtle action. We have hastily arranged a passage for you - Go to the docks, to the easternmost pier, and look for a ship called the 'Buoyant Boulder'. Don't ask. It's not one of ours. The ship is heading to Oppara. The man that delivered this message told you the time of the departure. Please hurry. Once you are in Oppara, find Rods and Reels. It is a bait and tackle shop in the Eastport district. Ask the man there about the 'cinnamon special', and all shall be explained. Again, please hurry!

- Colson Maldris

Alright, folks - you have time to gather some supplies, even purchase some stuff on the way to the Docks, perhaps. But you better hurry. If you're not on the ship in two hours, it's leaving without you. *queue evil laughter*

Just kidding. You do meet on the ship. Feel free to do a meet and greet with the new talent. The ship is a commercial barque, and is carrying cargo to Taldor. There are some passengers, but based on the look of the room you were assigned, it won't be very comfortable. The important thing is you are on board, amirite?

Well, I guess I was celebrating too hard last night. Reminder: don't go out on the first night back in Absalom. Absalom parties a wee bit harder than the provinces... especially Galt.

Tenibri gathers his things. He begins heading to the docks. So, another voyage by ship. Well, I guess there's no other way to leave Absalom... at least not that's available to wee Pathfinders like me. Do I need anything? He makes a mental inventory of his possessions, and decides that he has what he needs. He finds the Bouyant Boulder relatively easily, and makes his way to his room. It looks cramped, but it will do; wayangs don't take up much space anyway.

Shrouded in his typical dark cloak, hood drawn up and keeping his face deeply hidden within the cowl, he begins looking for other passengers who might also be Pathfinders.

Helme stumbles out of bed. Two hours? Hopefully I can commune with the Spirits when I get to the ship. I hope. She heads out and grabs a breakfast roll and some dark tea. Then heads to the weapon shop to purchase a new longspear.

I wonder who will be on this mission with me? A ship at least I won't have to swim off the thing. At least I hope I don't have to swim. She makes it on the ship about thirty minutes before departure.

Eadric stares at his note for a good few minutes, puzzled by the clandestine nature of his newest task for the Society. Woah! They must know how totally subtle I am. He wakes up almost straight away, obscenely excited as he bounces around his messy room, looking for some clean-ish clothes to wear and filling up his pack with anything he can find. Totally can't wait to show off my new shield! He thinks to himself as he picks up the polished silvery round shield hung lovingly on the wall and heads bounds out of the room.

Running onto the ship, Eadric's eyes immediately pick out Helme, "Sis!" He bellows as he sees his friend, his arms open wide, "What are the chances? It's like, most excellent to see you again." He bounces over to Helme and gives her a big hug, "You know what this is about, Sis? It all seems so secretive... I totally feel like a spy!" He beams at her, and looks around for other Pathfinders, "Sorry I'm late. I mean, like, you wouldn't believe the queue at the potion shop. Have you met anyone else yet?"

Eadric notices a dark cloaked figure seemingly also looking around for someone, and decides to introduce himself, "Bro! You here..." He leans in and whispers conspiratorially, "For the secret mission?" He winks and touches his nose with a finger, "If you are, I'm Eadric! I sort of, like, protect the smarter agents like Helme here while they do their thing. It so totally nice to meet you, Bro!"

A big gruff, massive sailor man taps Eadric on the shoulder. As he turns around, he just gives a soft growl... and then gives him a hug! Eadric is sure it should have been bone crushing, but even though the burly sailor is squeezing tight it feels gentle as a kitten. As the sailor steps back, he issues forth a decidedly feminine giggle and winks at Eadric.

How do you like the new look?

Suddenly, standing in front of him and Helme is their old friend Cypher, their long hair and beautiful red dress as alluring as ever.

Picked up a new trick! Should be useful for all our super spy sleuthing. It's so wonderful to see you both again... I've been working hard to make sure I can give you guys as much backup as I can.

They turn to the new friend in the dark cloak and give a not so subtle wink, flipping a small fan in their hands and covering up the bottom of their face, giving them a very mysterious look themselves.

Of course, looks like they paired us up with somebody with talents for this sort of thing, unless the cloak is merely for ambience?

They hold out a hand.

Cypher Starchild, Devotee of Arshea, and yes the rumors about my faith are true, and yes, if your a good dear I'll be happy to involve you in my morning ritual.

They giggle a bit and grin.

Helme and Eadric already know me, but it's always good to meet a new pathfinder friend.

A small bird alights on Eadric's head and leans over his forehead to look into his eyes.

Heeeeey brother, how you holdin up? I know you missed my smoooooooth notes...

The gravelly, yet smooth deep voice coming from the tiny bird always causes a bit of mental dissonance.

Yes, the bird does sound like barry white. He sings.

Tenibri looks startled at all the sudden attention. "Yes, I guess I'm here for the secret mission, but you're not doing a great job keeping it secret now, are you?" He looks around the deck, wondering if the other Pathfinders have totally given them away.

Cypher's smooth attitude warms his mood though, (Holy Diplomacy bonus, Batman!) and he continues with much less concern. "This?" he asks, tugging at the cowl of his cloak. "Neither, really. My talents are arcane. The cloak is self-preservation, more than anything sneaky, I suppose." He pulls the hood back, revealing the deep indigo of his wayang skin, along with the pattern of white dots dancing across his face. "Some in this world aren't too accepting of someone as strange as me, so, I try to keep my heritage on the down-low. Even here in Absalom."

"Of course, I've found that fellow Pathfinders are rarely surprised by anything." He flips the hood back up, and checks to see if any of the crew are eying him differently.

"So, you all know each other, huh? How did you meet?"

Cypher wraps their arms around Helme and Eadric's shoulders and gives a grin.

Eadric and Helme saved my bacon during our confirmation together! We've been on a few missions since. Mostly, they smash monsters and bad guys, and I handle folks that it would be bad to smash.

They roll their eyes a little.

I keep telling the Venture Captain to keep me in the city, in the courts, where my talents are worth something, but I think he takes sick pleasure into sending me out into the woods or jungle and letting Eadric and Helme have to save me repeatedly.

After giving them another squeeze, they wink at their cloaked friend.

Rule of thumb? If people know we're pathfinders, they assume we're up to something. Even if we aren't, pretend to be, keeps up the mystique. Once we're off the ship, we might try being a little less conspicuous, but for now we're just pathfinders off to do who knows what who knows where!

A Varisian woman wearing a colorful, quilted jerkin over a simple cotton shirt and a pair of pants balances her way across the gangplank. She holds a net loaded with gear over her shoulder and a glaive, which she is using for counter balance, over the other.

"A wayang and an oread? You all must be my fellow Pathfinders," she says with a smile. "Soraya. A pleasure to be on this assignment with you."

She drops her gear onto the deck and fishes for a letter stuffed in her belt. Soraya holds out the letter, showing the broken seal of the Open Road. "You would think," she says, "if they knew they were going to send me to Oppara, that they would not have had me sail all the way from Andoran first. I'm sure my report could have made the journey just fine on its own."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As you talk, a young-looking sailor knocks and puts his head through the door: "Oh yeah - the Captain said to remind you to leave the cat alone. Just popping in to say that, and..."

He throws a bundle on the ground next to you. "... that. Enjoy the journey! We'll take three or so days." - the head disappears and the door closes.

Unraveling the bundle reveals several hammocks and blankets. Your room is a modest one, with no beds. It seems like a hastily re-purposed room originally used for cargo. The barrels and crates in the corners indicate as such. It is rather spacious, though. So that's something, at least.

Eadric cannot help but notice that though Soraya's hands are soft and delicate, her grip is shockingly strong and her nails are dark and hard as obsidian. "I hope it is merely that the tapestry they weave is far too complicated for us to understand from ground level," she replies to the bruiser with a gentle smile. Her dichormatic eyes glimmer with charm.

Down in the hold, she hangs her net on a hook and secures her glaive against the hull. "Don't want that banging around in rough seas."

Soraya chuckles good-naturedly at Cypher's brazenness. "I suppose some devotions do make it awkward in cramped quarters. Just imagine a devoted of Torag! So much clanging and banging in the morning! Or a Gorumite with all the shouting!"

The voyage to Oppara took less than expected. With favourable winds behind the ship, you arrive to your destination as the second day of your journey turns into a night. You disembark, and head on into the city's Eastport district. Not a good time for sightseeing, but you still manage to get a vew of some interesting achitecture illuminated only by the moon and torches scattered around the walls. After some asking around, you manage to locate Rods and Reels. A few knocks on the door later, an older man opens the door, and lets you in after some convincing. He walks to the counter and looks at you with bloody eyes. Clearly, the man didn't get his beauty sleep.

Helme just stands to the right of the doorway and lets Cypher do the talking. They will get all the information we need.

The man's facade quickly shifts from grumpy to hopeful, he claps his hands together quietly and puts them in front of his mouth, as if supporting his nose with his fingers. "Great! You're here. Hold on."

He hastily moves towards the door and locks it from the inside, then heads back to the counter.

"Right - you arrived faster than I anticipated, but that is only for the better. First of all, welcome to Oppara! My name is Muesello, the Venture Captain of the local lodge.", he gestures towards the building around you with an open, upwards-facing palm. "Though, I am afraid our presence here could mean trouble if exposed, so keep your identities on the down-low. Which brings us to the reason for your visit. Let me elaborate..."

Musello begins to blow out all candles in the room, leaving only one oil lamp flickering on the counter of his shop. The shadows of nets, rods, and various other fishing equipment dance on the walls of the shop as he explains the situation.

"Let me bring you all up to speed. It seems that I may have gotten myself, and by extension the Society, into a bit of hot water. You see, lately the Taldan government has been growing particularly protective of what it considers its national treasures. Grand Prince Stavian seems to have taken a personal interest in anything older than last week’s fish stew, imposing heavy tariffs on any antiquities being sent out of the country."

The grey-haired man lets out a deep sigh and his shoulders slump. "This is where my own idiocy comes in. I thought that I could save the Society a few pieces of gold by smuggling items out of the city, using my contacts in a secret cult of local Sarenites known as the Dawnflower Blossoms. They receive significant support from people in Qadira, and oversee regular shipments to and from Katheer. Everything went very smoothly until last night. A group of local guards known as the Porthmos Militia conducted a violent raid on one of the cult’s safe houses here in the neighborhood of Westport. A man named Chalfon Dalsine, a minor noble who was himself nearly a Pathfinder in his youth, led the attack. This gang slaughtered half the members of the cult, even those who didn’t fight back—it was horrible. A few members were able to escape, but the rest were either slain or captured and dragged away for interrogation."

Muesello goes on to explain that while the deaths were tragic, his primary concern is that he had given the Sarenites several parcels for transport just last week. The parcels included a number of notes written in a personal cypher, but anything involving codes eventually makes its way to the Lion Blades, the secret spies of the Taldan government. It’s only a matter of time before they crack the code or use some divination magic to track him down. Muesello continues his explanation.

"The Society is in a very delicate place at the moment, especially here in Taldor. The upheavals caused by the Shadow Lodge have only made things worse. If the government tracks those packages back to me, they might formally expel all Pathfinders from the country! Now what I need you to do is ..."

THUD THUD THUD

A loud knock on the shop’s front door interrupts the venture-captain mid-sentence. A strong voice calls out from the other side, "Open this door! This is the Porthmos Militia. Open this door in the name of the Grand Prince!"

Venture-Captain Muesello plays up his age, and calls to the guards outside the door that he must find the key, motioning for you to remain quiet. As he loudly fumbles around the shop to make it sound as though he’s searching for something, he whispers to the gathered Pathfinders. "Ten of the escaped Dawnflower Blossoms members are hidden here in the lodge. I was able to rescue them after the raid. They’re all upstairs—five in my bedroom and another five in my supply room." He knocks over three hay bales along the room’s east wall, revealing a trap door beneath. He flings it open to reveal a ladder descending into darkness. "You’ve got to get those people out of here," he pleads, gesturing frantically at the hatch. "In my basement there is a staircase leading down to the ancient catacombs under the city. At the bottom of that staircase, there is a large lever on the right, just a few feet down the connecting corridor. Once everyone is clear of the staircase, pull it down and it will collapse behind you. That should keep anyone from following you. Once you’re in the catacombs, just ask the cult members for directions; they should know their way around. Ask them to take you to the Vault of Sarenrae—it’s their last hiding place. Oh, and track down this Chalfon Dalsine, and see if you can find my parcels: two beautiful sets of armor crafted by the fey of the Verduran Forest. Last I heard, the Porthmos Militia had taken them back to Dalsine’s home."

The pounding on the door increases in volume and an annoyed voice calls out again. "We don’t want to break the door down, old man. Hurry up!"

"Yes, yes, I heard you. Hold on, I’ve got to find a candle." Muesello turns back and whispers once more, "I’ll hold them off as best I can. Please get the cult members out of here, or they’re all as good as dead, and please don’t try to kill the guards! This is a large group of serious guards who obviously mean business. Any lethal attacks or, gods forefend, a death could spell doom for the Society! These are city guards acting on the authority of the Grand Prince himself!"

Eadric may be a shield man, but he is still an armourer by trade and with Soraya's beautiful armour, and the promise of two more sets to ogle at, he may have trouble concentrating on this job. :)

"Gotcha', boss!" Eadric whispers back to the venture-captain, "If I have to like, knock them out though, that's totally fine right?" He asks as he moves into a defensive position between the stairs and the trap door and unslings his shield, "Because I totally will if they get through too soon." Looking around at his comrades, Eadric adds, "If one of you wants to, like, excavate the blossoms or something while I stand guard, that would be most excellent!"

Hehe, you weren't lying about us being thrown straight into an interesting situation, GM. :)

Cypher bites their lip and turns to the captain, considering staying behind to help distract the guards... but as good as they are, they just have to have faith that the venture captain can handle it. She runs over to Eadric.

Eadric, come on, let's go a little ahead and make sure the way is clear.

They gesture to the hatch and stairway.

Let's move as quickly as we can.

They move down the stairs, hopefully with Eadric close by, and as the sarenrite refugees come down, pushes them forward, grabbing the lever, but waiting until everyone has passed before pulling it.

Eadric looks at Cypher, then back at the door, he hadn't considered that the way forward could be just as dangerous as staying here. Although he's pretty reluctant to leave the door unguarded, he trusts Cypher and give them a little nod, "Righto, but you head down the ladder first..." Seeing how comfortable Soyraya is with that glaive, and remembering just how firm her handshake was, Eadric is pretty sure that she can take care of herself. As such, he leaves the Shelynite to take point while he hovers nearer the back, helping the Dawnflower Blossoms get down the ladder quickly, "Just jump, I've gotcha!" But he never lets his old friend Cypher out of his site.

Helme is a slow moving woman so she starts down the ladder. "Get those people down the stairs. She'll help them off the ladder as quickly as possible. "Come on. Hurry." Helme mutters.

As you move up the stairs, you quickly notice that none of he Blossoms are actually sleeping. Most of them are perched against the door frames, observing other two Blossoms who are just next to the stairs, listening in on the situation below.

By the time you get upstairs, you already hear quiet shuffling of feet heading to the stairs, as the two Blossoms near the stairs gesture for the others to move downstairs. Still, it might take a while for all of them to retreat into the basement.

Another loud series of knocks can be heard - "Old man, we have reasons to believe you are harbouring Dawnflower Blossoms. Open the door -THIS INSTANT- or we will break it down!"

Stuff:
Muesello, Bluff: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Guard Captain, SM: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
1d12 ⇒ 12

Muesello goes pale, but tries to keep a calm voice when responding: "Harbouring whom? Never heard of them. Please don't break down the door. I'm a shopowner and I live here. Have a heart. It's dark and hard to see the keys. I'm an old man for crying out loud."

"You have precisely one minute, then we bust the door down and make a mess. We have a job to do as well, you know.", the commander justifies the actions.

"Count to sixty, Neowe! Make sure the old man hears it."

A counting starts from the other side of the door. As the Blossoms quietly move from the top floor to the basement, the countdown menacingly closes to the end of its deadline -
thought it seems they might JUST make it. Muesello stands near the door with the keys ready, observing you and the Blossoms moving downstairs, occasionally kicking a basket to make a noise. He nods to both the passing Blossoms and you to mentally speed up the process.

If you wish to do anything else than running away, now is the time to do so.

GM, does it look like we'll get everyone down before the 60 count? Cause I have an idea to buy some time, but if this is a scripted moment it could very well jump us off the rails and cause some trouble.

Cypher looks at the folks, realizing there won't be enough time to get everyone downstairs in time, decides to add a bit of their own flair.

Eadric They whisper... Get them moving! I'll buy you some time!

With a flick of their wrists and a muttered word, Cypher transforms into a stunningly gorgeous, voluptuous woman... in a very distinct state of messy undress. She flicks her hands, a quick prestidigitation causing all candles except the one held by the venture captain to go out. She stalks over, shouting at the top of her lungs.

YOU IMBICILE I TOLD YOU I REQUIRE MY BEEEEEAUTY SLEEP! IS ZIS MORE OF YOUR DRUNKEN LOUT FRIENDS?!

She walks up to the venture captain and gives him a look, whispering.

Soooo sorry about this.

She grabs him by the ear, and flings open the door before shoving him out it into the men outside, holding the candle in front of herself so she gives the entire guard company a nice good look at.... herself, while not letting the light into the room everyone is sneaking down.

YOU DO NOT PAY NEARLY ENOUGH FOR ZIS NONSENSE! I SHOULD NEVER HAVE LEFT BERNHOLDT! DON'T YOU DARE WAKE ME AGAIN! I VILL SHOVE ZIS RODS SO FAR UP YOUR KESHTER YOU WILL FISH WITH YOUR TONGUE! GO WITH YOUR LOUD FRIENDS!

bluff: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29

She then slams the door shut, locking it again. She waves at the others to move it!

Sorry GM, couldn't help myself.

Damn - throwing the venture captain to the wolves. Someone wants a promotion.

The counting stops as Cypher starts shouting, and the captain starts giving out new orders: "There's someone else. Bust down the door!"

Some rolls:
Bluff, Muesello: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33
Sense Movite, GC: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 14 + 2 = 17

Just as the guard are getting the ram ready, Cypher opens the door and shoves Muesello outside, then promptly locks the door again. The guards are too dumbfounded to respond, and after a moment of silence from them, Muesello starts calming the guards down. You can hear the muffled conversation: "Eeeerm - yeah; I'm old, not dead. A man needs him some sugar, you know. I mean did you see that? High fives, anyone? No? Cuffs? Okay then..."

As you descend into the basement, you hear Muesello attempting to salvage the situation, or something else; just as the guards are attemtping to bust down the door.

The loud thumps from above are nothing compared to the noise caused by the cave in caused by the lever, however. Once everyone (Except Muesello, duh!) is in a safe distance, you pull the lever and the entrance is immediately collapsed, producing a thundering sounds of large rocks falling to the ground and banging against each other, all of that amplified by the fact that you are in a small cave does not bode well for your ears, but you'll get over it. The breathing problem is a completely different issue, however, as dust fills the catacomb in the cave in's immediate vicinity.

After traveling a bit further from the dust cloud, breathing becomes a lot easier, although your clothing will probably need a wash or at least a good dedusting.

Knowledge (history or religion) 15+:
The worship of Sarenrae has been illegal in Taldor since the Great Purge of 4528 ar. The degree to which her followers are persecuted has waxed and waned over the last 200 years.

Knowledge (history or religion) 20+:
Sarenrae worship is much more common outside of Taldor’s major urban centers (Cassomir and Oppara), and away from the xenophobic southern border region (which includes the city of Zimar).

Knowledge (history or religion) 25+:
The brutality of the recent raid on the Dawnflower Blossoms does not reflect the current government’s attitude toward Sarenites within Taldor’s borders. It is more likely to be the result of a single, ultra-patriotic zealot.

Knowledge (history or religion) 30+:
Worship of Sarenrae was once quite popular in Taldor, although never as central to national identity as the veneration of Aroden. Numerous large Sarenite temples and cathedrals once existed throughout the empire, one of which was built of gold-plated bricks, rumors say.

Knowledge(dungeoneering or history) 15+:
The catacombs of Oppara are a mix of ancient sewer lines, natural caves, and old city streets and buildings buried centuries or even millennia ago. The ground beneath the city is literally honeycombed by countless tunnels and chambers. The catacombs have been used throughout Oppara’s history as a meeting place for secret organizations.

Knowledge(dungeoneering or history) 20+:
Oppara was supposedly founded over 6,000 years ago by the last descendants of ancient Azlant, and its catacombs are said to contain a few deep ruins dating back to this time.

Knowledge(dungeoneering or history) 25+:
Countless entrances into the catacombs once existed from the surface. Most were destroyed or bricked up centuries ago, following a nasty torble infestation that was believed to have originated in the catacombs.

Knowledge(dungeoneering or history) 30+:
Although Oppara’s catacombs are extensive, the areas used today are relatively close to the surface. Most of the oldest areas have been underwater for millennia.

Once they get themselves together, the Blossoms (five human women, two halfling women, and three human men) thank you profoundly. One of the halflings decides to further expand on the gratituous talk:

"I assume Muesello had to take one for the team. We'll do whatever we can do get him out, but we must carry on for now. Thank you. After that recent attack on our order, who knows what would happen to us if they would have caught us. For now, let's hope for the best. Thank you again. My name is Piria, and these are my fellow Blossoms. Or what is left of them, anyway." She introduces each by name, gesturing towards each one individually as she does so (human women - Charito, Ionnia, Nellina, Pasara, and Xene; the other halfling - Sophone; and the three men - Marcian, Narces, and Theodric).

"So...", one of the Blossoms asks - "What happens now? I mean - thank you for helping, but where will we go?"
