Okay, my idea is that Lord Tristan is floating the idea of creating a new lodge in London(or wherever) to help combat the Cabal threat. He's been allowed to recruit Rippers to help him form his new lodge.
If everyone is ok with this, Id like everyone to starting thinking/writing a backstory that answers the question
Why is my character a Ripper? What even led them to join up?
Why is my character in London? How did they get there?
I'll also need
Personal nemesis: Doesn't need to be a supernatural creature, it could be someone with whom the PC has a feud or simply doesn't like.
Friend: Someone with whom the PC goes to in times of need, could be a family member or it could be the local barkeep.
Someone who owes the PC a favor: What for?
Someone to whom the PC owes a favor: What for?
Lastly, each PC should pick a faction. I'd like a reason as to why the PC picked that faction and why they fit in with that Faction.
Masked Crusaders: A league of crime-fighters and monster hunters led by the gadgeteer hero known as "the Yankee." Other famous members include the demonically themed "Spring-Heeled Jack," and the
acrobatic heroine who calls herself "the Suffragette."
Old Worlders: A motley band of mad scientists, woodsmen, and werewolf hunters (called Wolfen Jaeger) who frequent the dark forests and mountains of Eastern Europe. The Old Worlders are led by
two of the most famous Rippers, Jonathan and Mina Harker. A hero must know a European language to become an Old Worlder.
Rosicrucians: An order of alchemists, wizards, and astrologers founded by Dr. Jack. The Rosicrucians helped to invent Rippertech, but now avoid its use and dedicate themselves solely to the pursuit of magical power. The Rosicrucian leaders keep their identities a secret, and lesser members only know them
as the Innominato, or "nameless ones". A hero must know ancient Greek to become a Rosicrucian.
Slayers: A group of vampire slayers, who form the core of the organization. Once Dr. Abraham Van
Helsing led the slayers personally, but he now considers himself too old to fight, so the mantle of leadership
has passed on to his adopted son, Johann. However, as the Rippers organization continues to
grow, Johann finds himself spending more and more time playing politics and less and less time in the
field with his slayers. As a result, the American slayer Tara LaGrange is essentially responsible for the day to-
day leadership of the faction.
Order of St. George: A secret society of priests, monks, nuns, and monastic knights drawn from different
religions and denominations. The Order forbids the use of Rippertech, but it gives its members access to
numerous holy relics. Its most famous member is a grizzled Irish priest named Father McBane. A hero must
know Latin to join the Order of St. George.
Witch Hunters: A fanatical group, members of this faction are dedicated to hunting down and
destroying witches, Satanists, and other evil magicians. Witch Hunters tend to be fervently religious and
favor fighting monsters by normal means-and up close-rather than resorting to Rippertech. Foremost
among them is veteran witch hunter Serious Chapel, who leads the faction with righteous fury and
encourages others to follow his example.

Xie Xiu Mei |

Mad scientists eh? That sounds like a GREAT faction to occupy. And your idea in the recruitment thread seems fairly nice as well, I'll think of something in more depth.
Also, I'm super impressed with how accurate Carl's picture to the real Jung, tone down the handlebars and add a pair of glasses and poof, actual Jung. Very nice.

Andrej Bulavin |

I've got something jelling in the back of my mind, and will share it after I get home from work. (They expect me to do actual work stuff here, instead of mess around on the boards. Well, I also left the Rippers file on my home machine instead of putting it onto a flash drive.)

Carl Jung |

I know right? I looked up a picture of Jung so I'd had a comparison point and someone in another game I'm in was using this avatar image. It was just too perfect not to use.
Think I'm going to go with Slayers, if only because it's the only one that kind of makes sense. Jung certain respects Dr. Van Helsing's intelligence and his success in occult research and understanding and his faction would appeal to him the most.
For the questions:
Carl joined the Rippers after a bit of an... incident in Germany. After his first paper on the power of the mind was essentially laughed out of the room, he became determined to prove that he was right. He began a series of experiments attempting to amass enough proof of psychic powers to force the scientific community to listen to him. He performed a number of tests on psychokinesis, remote viewing, telepathy, and occultism. Unfortunately, he may have gone a bit far in his occult research and he managed to attract the attention of some very unfriendly poltergeists. His lab and home suffered from the ghostly presence for weeks before word of his problems made its way to a local Ripper lodge and they arrived to exorcise the specters. This meeting led him to realizing how many more supernatural beings existed in the world and just how uninformed he was. He joined the lodge to continue his research in private and to help prevent the more hostile of these beings from harming people.
His transfer to London is a result of pragmatism above anything else. After the incident with the poltergeists, he was not only beginning to look like a bit of a fool, but also a potentially unstable fool. Carl left the continent for England. As one of the most civilized nations in Europe, and far enough removed from the news on the continent for the rumors of his stranger experiments not to have made it there, it was the perfect place to set-up his new practice. Fortunately, he still had more than sufficient funds to procure a carriage to make his way to France, and a ship from northern France across the channel to London.
The people he knows will come in a bit. Still need more time on that.

GM Niles |

Mei, the Suffragette is half Chinese! I was reading the GM guide and came across that little gem.
When the Suffragette was a child, her mother—a
naturalized Chinese immigrant—was murdered
while trying to vote in a local election. Her
despairing father drank himself to death. She now
champions the cause of equal rights and campaigns
against the evils of alcohol, opium, and other drugs.
She trained extensively in Chinese martial arts, but
as she began her fight against crime, she discovered
that vampires ran the global drug trade. This
discovery led her to the Rippers, and she has become
one of the organization’s most respected members.
She's one of the leaders of the Masked Crusaders and would make an excellent mentor for Mei. She could even be a relative who invited Mei to London for her schooling.

Xie Xiu Mei |

Hah, interesting stuff, but I wouldn't exactly consider Mei for the "Super heroic crimefighter" type. She's a very high strung nervous sort, and she's more into making fancy gizmos then going out in a mask. Sides, just because they both have Asian ancestry dosn't mean they'd know or even like each-other. there are a _lot_ of Chinese folk after all, ya know. .<.
Can you tell me any more about the old worlders and the sciency bits?

The Bitter Lord Tristan |

Tristan being a benefactor and hoping to set up a new Lodge sounds fine by me! I've sort of set him up to be viewed in common society as an eccentric nobleman, sometimes associated with scandalous or roguish behavior, but accepted because of his charm, influence, wealth, and blood, even if his own family views him as a bit of an outcast. Of course, most of his "scandals" come from his ongoing relationship with the Rippers and working with them, so it all comes out even in the wash.
As for backstory questions I'll get those finished shortly, I hope. As far as Faction, I could see him just being a Slayer, but I also think that being in the Order of St. George could be neat, depending on exactly what "monastic knights" and "different religions and denominations" entails. Maybe he's a Mason or something of that nature? Victorian London was full of esoteric "secret societies."

GM Niles |

The Old Worlders are primarily an Eastern European based group based out of Budapest. The Old Worlders in London are led by Johnathon Harker. They are ultra conservative...and very resistant to change or new ideas.

Andrej Bulavin |

Andrej Bulavin is a veteran of the Imperial Russian Army, a podpraposhtik senior noncom who spent most of his tenure in various parts of Central Asia, shooting at (and being shot at by) the British. However, there were a few things on which the Russians and British agreed....
Deep in the mountains of Uzbekistan, in the shadow of the Khazret Sultan, lay a small village ruled for centuries by a cult of werewolves that hunted the Gissar Range. They had little use for the British and Russians who fought over the land, save as prey. Faced with horrors beyond his experience, Andrej took it on himself to propose a truce with the British. For their part, the British had the cooperation of the Harkers and knew what they were facing, but lacked manpower. The combined forces, though, were able to rout the werewolves and kill most of them while sustaining heavy losses. In the aftermath, Andrej was arrested for treason, court-martialed, and sentenced to death. He received a reprieve when the major-general in command pardoned him; the major-general realized what had happened, and that Andrej's actions had saved many men from being slaughtered by the hunters in the night. Andrej's immediate superior never forgave him, though, and after Andrej's retirement managed to get the accusation of treason restored.
With Russia closed to him, Andrej called on his British temporary allies for help. The Old Worlders smuggled him out of Russia and off to Britain.
More to come later; it's after 10PM local and I have to be up early tomorrow.

Someone to whom the PC owes a favor: What for?Lastly, each PC should pick a faction. I'd like a reason as to why the PC picked that faction and why they fit in with that Faction.
Why is Rasheed a ripper and in London is already covered in his background, same as with his Nemesis -the Spooky Djinn of unknown name!-
As for the rest, give me a couple hours to face my studying -darn finals- and I'll be back!

GM Niles |

@Mei Everything I've read leads me to believe that the Masked Crusaders are the faction of "Gadgeteers". The named members and the pregen all have the Weird Science edge.
@Rasheed I know, I'd like it listed out so I can copy/paste it into a spreadsheet for further and easier reference.

Xie Xiu Mei |

Er hm. I think this is a reason why Factions are listed as generally being jut optional for Rippers, as I really can't picture her calling herself a 'Masked Avenger', or any of these various factions. They just don't seem to fit her goals. ...I don't know, I'll think of something later if you really want us to all have one

GM Niles |

Right, but I'd like you to fit your character into the campaign setting not vice versa.

Carl Jung |

Alright so Carl's associates:
Enemy: Katrina Muller: A spiritualist and, secretly, a witch who Jung approached to learn more about occultism. Her advice led to some of his early research, but it also led to the release of evil spirits the plagued him. She disappeared before he could confront her and ask for help. He's become convinced that she intentionally misled him so he would summon the dangerous poltergiests.
Friend: His mentor, Dr. Freud, was surprisingly supportive of Jung's work and, despite not necessarily believing him, he keeps in touch and they share their more traditional psychoanalytic research
Favor Given: Sir Jonathan of Kent: Shortly after his arrival in England, Jung's name as an associate of Freud attracted the attention of a minor noble who's son suffered fits and episodes of violence. Jung helped discretely treat the young man before his condition could become public. The noble owes a small favor to Jung for this.
Favor Owed: Father Hienrich Weber: A Lutheran priest from southern Germany, he was the head of the Lodge that exorcised the spirits plaguing Jung's home and lab. Carl feels that he owes the man a great debt for his help. Weber is a member of the Order of St. George.

GM Niles |

@Carl thanks perfect!
Question: How are you guys beginning with 3 edges? Am I being dense and missing something? 1 from Human and 1 from hindrances? Where's the other one?

![]() |

I get another one from Demonic Pact, at the meager cost of simply dying if I ever fall a Spirit roll when I am incapacitated.
But if you'd rather have me swap it to another, no biggie! By the way, expect Rasheed's info real soon.

GM Niles |

@Rasheed Oh, no that's fine. I don't mind you guys starting with 3 Edges, I was just wondering how it was happening.

Carl Jung |

You can spend two hindrance points on an edge, but that doesn't mean it has to be a two point hindrance. I got 1 from human, and 2 from spending all 4 of my hindrance points on edges. I didn't need cash, skills, or attributes really, so I got extra edges.

Xie Xiu Mei |

Right- I think I have something down;
Xiu Mei has been a member of the Rippers for the past 8 years operating under the codename Fēngbào, or Storm, and worked within the secretive Jade Buddha Temple within Shanghai as a member of it's resident science division. Initially, she had joined the organization upon investigators hearing of a curious young farmer's daughter who was said to have been possessed by malicious spirits. Upon digging into these rumors however, they simply discovered a young genius with an inventor's will.
They took the young child under their wing in the years to follow, teaching and helping her develop her intellectual gifts. And until recently, she was content to stay within the well protected walls of the temple away from the Cabal, but her lodge's owner has seen fit to transfer her across country borders so that she might branch out of her shell.
Understandably, she's been highly against this transfer since the beginning, but has been forced to make do in an entirely different social order. In fact however, she has indeed found a few fellows she might consider friends and colleagues within the secretive ranks of the Rosicrucians. While they have been aimed towards the study of magic in recent times, she hopes and aims to instead steer that momentum towards something beneficial of the Rippers as a whole. The technological wonders of Science.
Enemy: While her views upon where the Rosicrucians should be focusing themselves are generally disagreed with, such doubts and slander comes to a head with her chief intellectual rival, Sir Mortimer Tracker of York. She in turn shares a deep loathing with the elder wizard, whom she believes to be a racist old timer cemented in the ways of the Old World.
Friend: Not all the Rippers share the more arcane focused mindset of her fellow Rosicrucians, and in fact she's found many like minded individuals within the Masked Crusaders. The only one she'd truly consider a freind though is the Suffragette herself, with whom she shares many of her political views regarding equality and morale ethics.
Favor Given: With so many of the Crusaders being people who center themselves on the works of technological gadgets, some have even come to her on occasion for advice with their own creations. None so more however, then William Heart, The Spaded man, whom she helped rebuild and improve his blade launchers when they were lost by a werewolf getting too close.
Favor Owed: While she may not have appreciated him for mustering her out to England, the leader of the Jade Buddha temple in a way helped teach her all she knows, acting as a second father figure when her own saw her as something cursed and to be forgotten.
I used the Suffragette as you mentioned her earlier on as potential mentor, and while I don't feel she'd consider her as such, perhaps instead they could have a liked friendship. I can make someone up for that though if wished, haha. I hope this'll be alright in the end.

GM Niles |

Awesome thanks Mei.
Being a member of the Faction doesn't mean that you have to don an alter ego and go fight crime...you can just be exactly what you have in your story, I can see Mei being a "fixer" for the Masked Avengers. Someone who tinkers with their gadgets and "improves" them.
Ofc, if you'd rather the Rosicrucians then that's cool too.

Andrej Bulavin |

For reasons of loyalty and chance, Andrej considers himself a member of the Old Worlders. His associates:
Enemy - Ivan Petrovich Pushkin. His onetime commanding officer, a poruchik in the Imperial Russian Army. May or may not have sympathies with the werewolves.
Friend - Jason Holmwood, a cousin of Sir Arthur Holmwood and acquaintance of Mina and Jonathan Harker. Jason had spent some time in Eastern Europe, and when Andrej relocated to Britain the two of them became friends.
Who owes Andrej - In the fighting in Uzbekistan, Andrej helped rescue a young Englishman named William Patterson, and Patterson's family thinks well of Andrej for that.
Whom Andrej owes - The Harkers, for getting him out of Russia.
Still working on the character's crunch.

Why is my character a Ripper? What even led them to join up?
After fleeing from his home following the Djinn's trail he stumbled upon Rippers, the first time in Praga. They teamed up there and the association continued with other teams as he travelled through Europe.
Given their job of facing supernatural evil, Rasheed found most appropiate to engage in jolly co-operation.
Why is my character in London? How did they get there?
The last clue about the Djinn's evil work led to London. Once there the trail evaporated, and so he stayed there with the Lodge, waiting for another appearance of his foe.
Personal nemesis: Doesn't need to be a supernatural creature, it could be someone with whom the PC has a feud or simply doesn't like.
The Djinni. Years ago, when Rasheed was simply a bandit, the evil genie offered him power and salvation. Unbeknownst to him, Rasheed sold his soul when he accepted. After being saved by the Sikh, the Djinn has been trying to make his life miserable in order to lure him and kill him, to claim his soul.
Friend: Someone with whom the PC goes to in times of need, could be a family member or it could be the local barkeep.
Edvard Munch. The painter and Rasheed met during the Sikh hunt on Norway, months before going to England. When in Oslo, Rasheed helped him getting rid of a haunted portrait that was driving the painter mad with visions. The two of them managed to purge the drawing, but Munch didn't survive unscathed.
Munch moved to London too, where he socializes and tries to express the horros he once saw in his drawings.
I love art, I love Munch and I love historical figures appearing in games!
Someone who owes the PC a favor: What for?
"Sir" Barnaby Weliington McAllister IV. Not exactly a noble, but an offshot of the Wellington family. Sir Barnaby is a smuggler who was saved by Rasheed back in Praga, where he was doing "Comoletely legal bussiness relating completely usual and natural matters". He is a strange case of Gentlemanly Criminal.
Someone to whom the PC owes a favor: What for?
Tara LaGrange. Before going to London, Rasheed spent a few weeks in Normandie, France. He was out of his league this time, and only the timely intervention of a Ripper team leaded by LaGrange allowed him to remain alive.
Lastly, each PC should pick a faction. I'd like a reason as to why the PC picked that faction and why they fit in with that Faction.
Well, at first I thought about the Order of St. George... but I don't speak latin and I thought they are probably more fanatic than what is tolerable to a Sikh.
He has most in common with Slayers, as he shares his endless crusade against evil and selfless life... even if not all slayers are the same.

GM Niles |

@Rasheed Awesome! Edvard Munch, I'll be doing some reading it seems. Also, I had no idea was a Sikh was, I actually thought it was a culture, not a religion. I had to do some light reading on the subject when you brought up that all Sikhs are warriors.
RE:Slayer Faction They are the closest to a catch all faction there is. Pretty much anyone fits in as long as they like killing supernatural creatures and fighting the Cabal.
re:Order of St. George They aren't all fanatics per se, but they are definitely one of the more strongly opinionated factions. They completely eschew Rippertech, and forbid adherents from acquiring it, even the "potions" which aren't permanent.
@Andrej Thanks! Ties with the Harkers are good, since they appear a whole bunch in the PP campaign.
@Everyone Right now we are just kinda waiting on Tristan...and I have it on good information that he will be a bit incommunicado for a few weeks. So, I'm thinking that we might run the first Plot Point in his absence and then he can catch up with the group he has been assembling. What does everyone think about that?

GM Niles |

Your sheet looks accurate (6 points on Attributes, 15 points on Skills, one edge, 2 minors which you spent on 1 attribute)
Do me a big favor and post the text of the Edge in your profile in case I have to reference it one day.
Also could you change Knowledge (Battle) to "Squad Tactics" or something similar. Battle is pretty vague and Andrej wasn't a General, he was a Squad level soldier. So, while he probably doesn't have an indepth understanding of grand strategy, he probably does have a good working knowledge of how infantry squads should operate.
I'd let you roll on pretty much anything involving soldiers as common knowledge. I'll be using your backgrounds to dictate what common knowledge rolls you can make.
@Everyone I'd really like it if you guys would take a couple Knowledge skills to indicate what your character knows well. Something that ties into their background. Andrej took Kn:Occult and Kn:Battle to show that he was a soldier that studied a bit and knows a little lore on occult activities. (I'm gonna shoehorn him into being the Eastern European expert) The PP campaign has the Ripper team traveling extensively so Knowledges of various regions AND languages are going to be very important.

Xie Xiu Mei |

I think Mei'll do just find with her current group, but thanks for giving me that option as well. Does my sheet seem in order? I thought we only had six points available for attributes, but I could've been wrong. Also, how would her Gadgetter edge operate? It says once per game session, but we don't exactly have sessions here.

GM Niles |

Re:Sessions We will have "scenes" that I'll call at certain points. When that happens Bennies will reset and so will Edges like Gadgeteer.
re:Attributes Yes, you have 5 points to spend on increasing attributes, you can also use points from Hindrances to increase an attribute. Your attributes are correct Smarts at d12 took 4 and Agility at d6 took 1.
You seem to be missing some skills, you have 15 points to spend on skills
Repair: d8 3 points
Shooting: d6 2 points
K: Weird Science: d8 3 points
K: Electronics: D6 2 points
K: Chemistry d6 2 points
Total =12...you have 3 more points.
Hindrances: You have 2 minor and one major giving yourself 4 points. You chose one extra Edge so that's 2 points. You can spend the remaining points on skills OR increasing an attribute OR another edge.

![]() |

I will be content if she isn't the one driving the carriages :^)

Carl Jung |

I'm alright running the first plot point while Lord Tristan is away, since I'm pretty sure the intro to this story isn't too long anyway.
I think all of my numbers should add up and all of my knowledges are in place properly, so I'm pretty much ready to go.

Victoria Lawson |

Thanks for having me Niles, I'll have the sheet up for you shortly. As for the answers to your questions...
Why is my character a Ripper? What even led them to join up?
Victoria joined the Rippers primarily out of a sense of duty, but also one of gratitude. Only a few months ago, she was saved from an untimely death by the hand of Jack the Ripper, at a great personal cost to her saviors. She carries her scars from the attack with pride, and has become quite adept at melee combat in her short period of training. While she feels fighting with the Rippers is merely the right thing to do, given the circumstances, she also hopes to one day help put down the man that not only killed her parents, but nearly herself as well.
Why is my character in London? How did they get there?
Victoria was born and raised on the streets of London, and as such has a working knowledge of the city's politics, layout, and other general factors. Having always been a bit adventurous and of an unorthodox sort, she also knows quite a bit about the seedy underbelly of the city, which she has relayed to her compatriots.
Personal nemesis: Doesn't need to be a supernatural creature, it could be someone with whom the PC has a feud or simply doesn't like.
Victoria harbors a deep, personal hatred for one of the Rippers' worst enemies; Jack the Ripper. His attack on her and her family has left her viciously scarred and her family dead, and her own personal goal as a Ripper is to put the man down herself.
Friend: Someone with whom the PC goes to in times of need, could be a family member or it could be the local barkeep.
Elizabeth McIntyre is an Irish woman whom Victoria met upon her induction into the Rippers, and is something of a surrogate mother for Victoria after her own was killed. While not elderly, she's a fair bit older than the young Victoria and is much more experienced. She's done her best to help her adjust to life within the Rippers, and has a fierce protective instinct towards the young woman.
Someone who owes the PC a favor: What for?
Eliot Durst was a young man with a problem; he had made an enemy of a vampire. A smuggler working off the Thames, Eliot ran afoul of the monster after sensing something wasn't quite right with some cargo he'd been asked to ship. Discovering the crate he'd told was housing goats in fact held a number of human beings, he set them free and promptly realized how bad of an enemy he'd made. Victoria, in the process of gathering information around the city, learned of his predicament and offered to help. Informing her superiors, she helped Eliot abscond into hiding while a team of Rippers put down the vampire hunting him. While she wasn't on the team herself, Eliot still feels a sense of gratitude for saving his skin.
Someone to whom the PC owes a favor: What for?
Maxwell Lewis headed up the Ripper team that barely managed to save her from becoming one of Jack the Ripper's victims. Now missing an eye and crippled from the encounter, he continues to serve the Rippers from behind the front lines, training new recruits in hand-to-hand combat despite his wounds. After saving her life, he has trained Victoria and placed her into the care of Lord Tristan, but both know that her debt to him is far from repaid.

Andrej Bulavin |

Chalk this question up to my unfamiliarity with the system: right now, Rasheed has d6 Agility and d10 Fighting (spending 6 skill points). He gets an Advance and bumps his Agility to d8. Does he get back a skill point to use elsewhere, since with d8 Agility it would only take 5 skill points to get d10 Fighting?

As far as I know, nope.

GM Niles |

No he wouldn't. There are some serious drawbacks to raising your skills over the cap of the linked attribute. I don't really recommend doing it.
I'm gonna try and kick things off soon. I'm leaving Saturday morning to go to Las Vegas for 14 days for work. I'll be in a hotel with Wifi so I'll try and get us started sometime by Monday. I'm really gonna try tomorrow but I can't make any promises.

GM Niles |

Currently the heroes are quasi members of the London Lodge. This Lodge is run by the semi retired Abraham van Helsing.
Van Helsing Mansion (In:14 Me:11 Re:12 Fa:15): The London lodge is a mansion owned by Abraham Van Helsing himself. It is the most elaborate of all the Ripper lodges with several extensive libraries, magical research labs, ripping labs, an infirmary, a heavily defended relic vault, chemistry labs, physics labs, stables, classrooms, and private rooms for visiting Rippers. The mansion has nearly a hundred chambers, but most of it is located underground, and it is rather plain looking from the outside to avoid drawing too much attention to itself.
Dr. Van Helsing hasn't been seen by low ranking Rippers in years and his son Johann runs the day to day operations of the Lodge. In fact if any of you are Slayers he probably did most of your training. Lord Tristan is a respected member of the Lodge due to his birth and resources and is currently scouting locations for a new Lodge when the campaign begins.

re:Posting Expectations
From here on out the expectation is one post per 24 hours in gameplay at a minimum. I myself will check the boards a couple times a day to make sure things are moving, but you need to ensure you do your part in keeping this game moving. You keep the game moving by posting, by posting pushing posts, by posting actions that require response from either myself or another player etc.
Posting rate and consistency is of the utmost importance to me. Please, post daily.
