GM miteke - Voice in the Void (Inactive)

Game Master miteke

Voice in the Void: Mystery strikes again at the problem-plagued Blackros Museum in Absalom and its curator, Nigel Aldain, needs your help. When a famed Osirian tomb raider returns to Absalom and disappears in the museum's basement, Aldain fears the worst. When strange sounds echo from below and several of the curator's night watchmen go missing, he panics and begs the Society to investigate the mystery and save his museum from the darkness that infests it.

Voice in the Void is a follow-up scenario to Pathfinder Society Scenario #5: Mists of Mwangi. When played together, the scenarios create a mini story arc in the famed Blackros Museum.

Chyrone is going to be running Murder on the Silken Caravan. I volunteered to run a scenario between the two he is GMing. And this is the sequel to Mists of Mwangi so it totally fits in.

Good point there.

It gets people to test our their leveled characters too.

I was working on the PC, but a program interrupted my typing...and so i've got to retype everything again. >_>

Shall we play with 4 (I hear these early scenarios were meant for 4 anyway) or recruit a 5th?

As the GM, that is entirely up to you. The only problem I have come across with running just 4, is in the event that someone has to quit, you are left with only 3. Whereas if you had 5 and someone bails out, you still have the minimum needed for a legal table. Another thing to consider is the fact that I have GMed this scenario before, so I will likely avoid making critical decisions if at all possible.

OK. I'll asked for a +1 in Flaxseed. I will probably start Monday night if that gives Theron enough time to finish his tweaks.

I'm a little worried about Celegon. He has made only two post so far, once in recruitment and once as a dottish post in gameplay. Should I worry or look for a replacement? If it was in the middle of the game I would bot him along, but we haven't gotten all that far yet.

I second this and would also send him a PM with at least a 24 hour response expectation. In other words, if he doesn't respond within a given time frame, I would move on without him, or fill the spot. Most Gm's have a once a day post expectation, so don't feel like you are expecting to much. )

When I have a slow responding player, in a combat situation, I will generally Delay the player if they haven't responded within 24 hours of me advising them that they are up. I will continue the delay until the next round, at which time I will opt to BOT them.

In cases where I have a player that disappears or has to stand down. I will evaluate where we are in the scenario and then decide if I am going to remove them from the game, thus not report their participation, or shadow them and give them partial or full credit upon the success of the scenario. Brazen is a good example in my current game, who had something come up and had to stand down.

One of the things I consider is how much they have experienced of the scenario. In Brazen's situation, I don't want to report that he completed one scenario out of the series and remove his enjoyment of playing the three part scenario, when he didn't get a chance to experience the thing. So there is some GM judgment when it comes to this process.

I generally use Google drawings as well. When you select extra apps in the right corner of Google, it will open a window with more options. In the bottom of the options, there is an even more options link. At some point the list will include Google drawings. When you place a map into Google drawings it will automatically save the map into your Google drive. Once it is in your Google drive, you can select it and change your sharing options. In the advanced options, you can select to share the map with anyone with the link and then select can edit. "Can edit" will allow players to interact with the map. Make sure to change all icons to reflect the same. Images used as references during descriptive postings can stay "Can View".

Thok, you are in. Go ahead and join in in gameplay. I put your icon in the drawing. Good to have you with us.

I think I may have messed up the surprise round. Exactly how do you determine who is aware of who? Obviously the Owlbear is aware since it launched the attack. But was I supposed to roll a perception or something to determine who gets to act on the surprise round? The way I've seen it done and the way I did it was to just roll initiative and anyone who is surprised but has not acted yet is flat-footed but will still get to act when their init comes around. Since you all rolled higher inits there was no flat-footed penalty. So I have two questions for future reference:

1) Would the owlbear have been flat-footed if someone had been able to attack it by beating its init. I would think not since it launched the surprise attack and could not have been surprised.

2) Should I have made the players roll something to see if they were unaware and thus not act during the first round, particularity since many were still in the hallway?

After asking the questions I don't think I really messed anything up too badly except that I should have started the party off having taken that first 5' step into the room and maybe had the folks in the back roll perception. Does that sound right?

Silver Crusade

That's a very good question and one I have been wondering about myself (I have not yet reached my first GM star).

From the rules:

Quote:

Sometimes all the combatants on a side are aware of their opponents, sometimes none are, and sometimes only some of them are. Sometimes a few combatants on each side are aware and the other combatants on each side are unaware.

Determining awareness may call for Perception checks or other checks.

As best I can tell, it mostly is just a feel for the combat situation as depicted in the scenario. If you think we could have noticed the owlbear coming to life in time to react then you can ask for a perception roll or even decide there is no surprise round. If you think its ambush would definitely work, you can have it act in the surprise round and not the players. But it's up to the GM's vision of the situation.

The rules on it aren't very clear so if anyone else here has more experience, I would love to hear other opinions on this.

Different GMs, different approaches. :)

If your owlbear is the one that triggers combat when [Condition X] happens, like any PC stepping into the room, no need to bother rolling for perception.
That's just mmy approach.

If the scenario says [DC X perception, to see it is not really dead], for example, then yes.

1) Yes, i believe so. Surprise round comes before regular combat. Those who haven't had their turn yet in the 1st round of regular combat, are flat footed.
An example from another PFS mission: The boss has heard the PC descend a ladder, seen them, yet when combat is rolled for, he is flat footed.
It's silly, but yes, they are flat footed.

2) That can depend on the circumstance. It is not strange to say that only those that can see the monster, can react in the surprise round.
========

Steve walks into the room, buddies behind him are in the corridor.
Something starts moving, Steve looks surprised.
Buddy behind him doesn't yet notice anything, until..... Holy sh!te what just sucker punched Steve? ^^

We all start somewhere. ;)
