GM FurtiveZoog |
Hi all, I'm probably a bit slow today... I'll try to get a post in tonight.
So far, she's showing herself to be pretty much c**p on damage, at least so far. It was much more dramatic when I played it and - in the first round of combat - my cleric had an arrow suddenly sprouting from her chest, taking her from full to -8 or -9. (It was a confirmed crit, hitting for 23 of 24 possible points!)
Hagan Silverseer |
Does she require silver or cold iron? Because I have a cold iron spear on the ground and a silver light mace hanging from my belt. As a Paladin I don't require either now that I'm smiting. Although my arrows are cold iron. Anyone can feel free to take either one of those if they need to.
GM FurtiveZoog |
Cold iron didn't seem to work very well, although you are not yet certain what will get by her damage reduction, if anything, as you haven't hit her with anything else (besides Smite Evil, of course). (And besides energy of course - she doesn't seem to have sonic energy resistance or strong, general spell resistance, since Herman's spells have worked so far.) Remember, there is also DR/-, DR/Good, and DR/Adamantine, and she appears to be unique in some ways.
While Smite Evil gets you by any and all Damage Reductions, it isn't necessarily exactly the same as a silver weapon or a cold iron weapon (or an adamantine weapon, or ...) for all purposes.
Hagan Silverseer |
No, it doesn't, which is why I make a point to have as many different damage options on me as possible. I'd have Adamantine, too, if it wasn't so expensive.
GM FurtiveZoog |
Hmm. Hard to say, actually, since it doesn't say so explicitly one way or another.
Under "Improvised Weapons", though it says "Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat.", which would fit your average rock.
Then, under slings, it says, "You can hurl ordinary stones with a sling, but stones are not as dense or as round as bullets. Thus, such an attack deals damage as if the weapon were designed for a creature one size category smaller than you and you take a –1 penalty on attack rolls.", which definitely implies that sling stones (carefully chosen or even shaped rocks) are inferior to a bullet of the same size, with a half-pound rock thrown at great force by an instrument designed to throw such things getting a -1 and only doing 1d3.
Also, even seemingly small variations from the designed equivalent take a -4, such as a "hammer" (seemingly a good weapon) versus a "hammer, light", or a "miner's pick" versus a "pick, light" or "pick, heavy". It really seems it should be less of a penalty, like -2, but there you have it.
Hagan Silverseer |
I don't suppose Jani have an extra Enlarge Person so they can negate the height penlty, do they?
I think I should get a wand of Enlarge Person when this adventure is over. It would loosen a slot for them and lead to more giant Storn moments. Worth every copper, in my book.
It's one of my favorite wands to make in Pathfinder, and it's a steal at 750gp.
GM FurtiveZoog |
As for the height problem, she can just go up higher, with the ceiling being about 35' up, so that might not do it.
One downside for Enlarge Person is that it is one of those "1 Round" casting time spells, and (unlike with potions) it takes that long as a wand, as well.
Edit: Ditto on the Giant Storn moments, though.
(I will have to check, but I think we are waiting on Storn, btw.)
Hagan Silverseer |
It's usually worth it though.
And you get a bigger reach as well, so potentially, you should be able to get a hit on her. If nothing else you should get an AOO, I believe, if she tries to fly away. Although I might have to check on that.
GM FurtiveZoog |
It does seem like a lot!
My 3rd level gnome cleric has 742 posts, but my fourth level aasimar cleric only has 276 posts. Of course, the latter went through a module set that advanced him more rapidly (Thornkeep), and he just turned 4th level, and it depends on the scenario types and the group, and your characters roll within the group.
It would be interesting (well, to me, anyways...) to see how many posts I make, on average per scenario with various characters, adjusting the ones with GM credit.
GM FurtiveZoog had 1,513 posts. I am kind of surprised it isn't more compared to Wuliem, especially since I reply more often to individual posts than most GMs, and less as a big block after everyone comments.
GM FurtiveZoog |
Yeah, Wuliem's first campaign was my first, as I remember, although I ran two games at once for FSII then FSI since Derek asked me to help with a game where the GM disappeared, and that is where I first met Herman and Storn, with the groups combining after that.
Speaking of disappearances, I'm a little slow this weekend since my wife's computer decided its time was up, and so she needs to use my computer for nursing school stuff. We're getting her a new one, so we'll probably be back to normal activity in a day or two.

That "Ill Omen" spell is really powerful! Forcing a worse of two rolls situation for the next roll could really throw off the bad guy's or BBEG's next attack or well-timed save for another spell. And since it is one that allows no save and the round limitation really won't matter in combat, the spell seems a really good option for a wand. Wow.
I did spend (probably too much time) debating whether the creature would be affected by the spell since she has a 'protection from good'-like supernatural quality that says "Furthermore, it is immune to any attempt by a good creature to posses, charm, or influence it." and Ill Omen is "enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting]". So, I think probably not, but I'll allow it anyway since she has a lot going for her and this might take awhile. The spell would make more sense to me as necromancy or conjuration (calling) of "the spirits of ill fortune" than that, since apparently ill fortune couldn't affect undead, as is. Eh.
(Funny enough, it seems I have it automatically added to my oracle since she has the dual-cursed archetype, but I had ignored it since I was confusing it for the higher-level, much less useful "Oracle's Burden".)
GM FurtiveZoog |
I have several characters who have bought a wand of bless, which seems to be a nice first action for my not-very-combat-oriented clerics to do. You could have some scrolls and keep one in hand, though, reading it and then just dropping the empty to the floor, which would obviate the need to take a move action to then put away the wand.
I seem to spend a lot more cash than others on scrolls for healing (diagnose disease, remove fear, remove sickness) and other utility spells (consecrate, comprehend languages). I even keep a few scrolls around for various cantrips I don't usually have the space for, like Read Magic.
Pearls of Power are nice, of course, if still spendy at your level. While you get the advantages of your higher level with a pearl (or the equivalent magic item for other classes), I like scrolls so I have more options available, including spells I would never normally have prepared, and you can have 20 scrolls for the cost of one pearl. Besides, the 10 rounds a scroll of bless lasts is usually plenty for most combats.

Update: I've got my computer back exclusively (although my poor wife is trying to get over the shock of Windows 8) and so should have a new post up tonight sometime. (I've been able to post on other games but haven't been able to have my pdfs, text files, maps and other tools open.)
GM FurtiveZoog |
Hi all, we are almost done with this one, just a little wrap up (and maybe you want to look behind that door). So, how about we start making the Day Job rolls and start thinking about the next adventure.
The gp earned is 509 gp for levels 1-2, and the out-of-tier value for level 3 characters (I think it is just Herman) is 880 gp.
The xp is 1, and the FP and PP are 2. The secondary success condition for this one was restoring sight to Lyrehawk, the blinded Aspodell Ranger, so Jani got that one for you with a Heal check.
The boons and specials:
Hero of the Five Kings: For helping Torvic (and thus dwarves everywhere) find the Gallery of Wonders, you have gained a small amount of fame with the dwarves of the Five Kings Mountains. When dealing with any dwarf from that region from now on, you gain a +2 circumstance bonus on all Charisma-based checks.
+1 fey bane arrows (Limit 2; 166 gp each)
Ivory-handled short sword (60 gp)
Scroll of aid (250 gp)

Did anyone want to take their character through The Confimation first, before The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment? As I remember, people were generally going to take other characters through the Confirmation. I ask because I might switch up the order and do The Temple first so that I make sure we get it done since that is the one they gave me for free for this gameday.
Jani Lee Two-spirit |
I want to use Jani for a possible game this weekend, but that should be done by the time we get started. I wanted to run my new Tengu Pirate swashbuckler through the confirmation as his first game.
Herman Halfshanks |
Day Job Sing Perform: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Herman composes and sings a song about the dwarven halls. However, the fungus parts aren't incredibly popular with the crowd and is debut is a middling success at best.
Storn |
I actually haven't made my new PFS character for confirmation. >.> Can someone give me a quick rundown of what folks are bringing we have so I can plug the gap? Thinking of going with an arcane caster.
GM FurtiveZoog |
I think we will do Empyreal first, then, since it will give everyone time to think about what kind of character to take through The Confirmation. So, no worries there.
Jani, Yeah, we can totally wait until Monday. It will take me probably until tomorrow night to do the chronicles for this one, and I will have to do at least some prep for Empyreal since I had originally started The Confirmation. I'll probably get the new thread up as soon as I can, though, just so people can dot in, and just not start officially until Monday. Hopefully we will still be in APL 2.5 or lower, since I don't think you would want to 'play up' on this one.
We might even be able to have the two overlap some with the idea of finishing both by the July 5th end to the Game Day.
Hagan Silverseer |
I was thinking of a rogue. Haven't built him yet either though.
Profession: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
+10gp
Hagan Silverseer |
Oh, wait, Jani, do you mean a rogue (swashbuckler)? If so I'll happily build something else.
GM FurtiveZoog |
I haven't heard from Alex (Turan) in a week, but I'll do his Day Job check for him:
Basketweaving: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
I wonder if you could have another individual cast Crafter's Fortune on you for your Day Job check? (Or drink their formula.)
Jani, you should get a scroll of it and teach it to your familiar.
Hagan Silverseer |
Hagan is now level 2 with the conclusion of this adventure.
I am spending my prestige point on a Bow. I could get a Darkwood Masterwork Composite Longbow (+3) for 730gp, which is just under the Prestige Point cap.
I'll be selling the following:
- Silver light mace, 12.5gp
- Shortbow, 15gp
- Rope, Hempen, 0.5gp
And I'll be buying the following:
- Ioun Torch 75gp
- Silver warhammer, 102gp
- Silk Rope, 10gp
- Grappling Arrow, 1gp
- Potion of Cure Light Wounds, 50gp
I think I can wait one more adventure to pick up the CLW Wand, especially now that I have Lay On Hands.
GM FurtiveZoog |
Hagan, Why did you make it out of Darkwood? You are strong enough that the weight savings won't really be significant.
I might go for the full +4 of greenwood (for its repairability, if you can keep it watered, and maybe take around a gallon of fertile soil on long missions), then have someone cast Masterwork Transformation on it. Or, save a bit and go for whipwood, which seems more durable generally.
~~
Wuliem,
Where would I find "Splash Weapon mastery?"
~~
Hi all,
I've reported the game so you should have the information showing up on your character, and I've sent you a link to the Chronicle sheet. Let me know if there are any problems.
Here is the link to The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment. I've opened up the Gameplay and Discussion parts. Feel free to check in there and do any role-playing you want. We'll officially start on Monday, if that works for everyone.
Storn |
Storn is now at level 3, although I haven't done any shopping for him. I'm unclear on the next game - am I bringing in a new character or should I continue with Storn?
Hagan Silverseer |
A +4 masterwork composite longbow would cost 800gp, which is outside the 750gp limit. The +3 costs 700gp. So really it's more an issue of, well, there's no reason not to make it dark wood, since it's just 30gp more.
And breaking weapons doesn't really worry me. Mending is a cantrip after all.
Turan the Wanderer |
Heya folks. sorry for lagging so badly was on a buisness trip to Switzerland and didn't have time or internet in the train so couldn't do any posting. Back to normal now but seeing this one is all wrapped up I'm sorry.
