A play-by-post, PFS run of Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore.

Hi all,

I am going to run PFS First Steps, Part I: In Service to Lore as a Play-by-Post, Pathfinder Society game here on the Paizo boards.

Having four spaces already filled, I am looking for two more new Pathfinders!

I am especially interested in inviting people who are new to PFS, PbP, or both as I’m trying to give some new people a chance to get started playing. This will probably be a one-shot campaign because of my other commitments, but I hope that getting a scenario under your belt (and your character's) will make it easier to find the next game on the boards.

So far, I have:
1. Zander Drax (Human Cleric 1)
2. Kawrock (Tengu Druid 1)
3. Vyk Tyr (Tiefling Magus 1)
4. Eurydes (Taldan Cavalier 1)

I'm hoping to start sometime mid-next week, giving time for new people to get their characters going. I've put an introduction to PFS and PbP on the campaign page.

Let me know if you have any questions!

First, thanks for doing this!

I'm about a year and a half into Pathfinder and early on in two PbP games (a third ground to a halt before the first game day passed). No PFS exposure yet, but one of our local group's GMs has gotten involved, so I'm thinking I'd best follow suit.

I have a Varisian L1 Oracle I could draft into The Society easily enough, if you think she'd be beneficial to the group. She's haunted, but is on reasonably good terms with her ghost (who generally doesn't bother anyone but her).

We're still looking for new recruits for our campaign. I look forward to meeting our new allies. :D

The Exchange

Just like that? Wow, you lot are too easy (not that I'm complaining)!

There might be a few minor tweaks coming since I haven't yet checked this PC for Society compliance (she's cloned from a non-PFS alias). But she should be very close if morbid curiosity drives anyone to look at her profile before the campaign kicks off.

I'll pop over to Discussion and Gameplay shortly.

Thanks to all for giving me a shot!

Silver Crusade

I am not new, and I believe you are in one of my First Steps games, but I would like to get this character into first steps. He did part 3 already before it was retired, and I had hoped to do the other 2, but I can settle for part one.

I have played a few campaigns of Pathfinder, but I am new to Pathfinder Society and play by posts! I was actually talking to a friend about wanting to get into these, and he linked me here earlier today. I'll work on a character tonight; I'd love to be considered!

Hi Kyrin - I'm not in your PFS game; I just sent you lots of material for running it when I saw that you were going to run one. It got me thinking about running another one, myself.

Since you already know it and I have one GM already who knows, I'll hold off adding you to the game as I don't want to have too many people in one game with background knowledge.

That said, I have decided that I am going to reserve a slot or two on new games of mine for players, like yourself, who are also GMing, as a thank you to GMs and to give GMs a chance to try out more scenarios before running them themselves. So, how about not this time but definitely next time? (I never got to play FS I or III, myself, but perhaps we can trade FS I's sometime when my schedule simplifies a bit? I'll run one for you and you can run one me.)

TUICH - You're in! Yup, just like that. My hope is that at end of this scenario you'll have one character fully fleshed out and with a little extra spending money, and will also have shown that you can be a good, reliable contributor to the PbP game format. That way, it will be easier to get selected for your next PbP PFS game.

extinct_fizz - You're in, just like that! ;-) When you're ready, you can introduce yourself on the Discussion thread and your character on the Gameplay thread.

****

So, Recruitment is now closed for this scenario.

The Exchange

Thanks, GMFZ. I'd like to think I've established myself in general (I've already outlasted one GM, not that that takes much sometimes!) but I'd like to do the same on the PFS side of the fence.

No need to capitalize the name by the way, "Tuich" is fine (or even "Hey, you!"). I simply had to switch up the font to have two characters with the same name.

I need to crash for the night, but will validate PFS Tuich ASAP tomorrow morning.

Silver Crusade

Sounds good to me! Thanks!

I would be interested in joining. I don't have any clue how PFS works though. Is everything I would need to make a PFS character on the campaign site? And if not, where could I find all the required information?

Sorry, somehow I missed the last line of your post, Zoog. If you do another one, I would be happy to join.

Hi Alec,

We're full up and already started, but it wouldn't hurt to get a PFS-legal character going on here so that you are ready the next time a slot opens up on someone's game.

So the introduction to the Pathfinder Society is here and the (free) "Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play" (a downloadable PDF) has most of what you will need to get started in PFS play. Most Paizo-created character options and equipment are legal - excepting creating items with Craft skills (unless you are an alchemist...) or Item Creation Feats - but be sure to check things on the Additional Resources page.

There is more information about how to make a PFS character alias (rather than just a regular messageboard alias) on the 'Campaign' page, but one section I didn't mention there is a section or sections describing the description and background of your character. This is the kind of thing GMs will look at when trying to decide whether someone might be a good fit Play-by-Post format.

Let me know if you have more questions!

And sorry we are full,

~~ Matt

Thank you for the information. I'll probably make a PFS character tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully I can find a game. Have fun!

Hi, Alec. Sorry you missed out, this is looking like it's going to be a super group. Great players from what I can tell so far!

For what it's worth, I "drafted" an existing character into this game and had to make very few changes for her to be PFS-legal. In other words, it's not really that different from non-PFS play (as long as you're not using any really "out there" stuff).

You can always do just regular PbP without getting involved in Society play (that's how I started). But if you can deal with slightly stricter rules, having a PFS character gives you the advantage of a somewhat "persistent" world. You can take your character to any PFS game on the board, or down to your local gaming store, or drop in on a game when you're vacationing in Australia. No matter where, your character (and you) will be accepted and you'll "drop right in" with people you've never met before and may never play with again. That's a lot of flexibility in exchange for a slightly stricter framework.

Don't hesitate to jump right in; everybody understands we all start out new. I'm pretty recent to PbP (and this is my first PFS game), but everybody I've met so far has been great. I bet you'll have the same experience!

I tend to stick to the PRD, so luckily "really out there stuff" shouldn't be a problem. I'm probably going to go ahead and make a PFS character, to familiarize with the specific rules of PFS, and then just find a game on here (PFS or not), since my home group has been meeting less frequently for a few months. With any luck I should be able to find one today or tomorrow. Hopefully you all have fun!
