The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.
Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat! With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix, he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.
Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances
in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw
another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.

Master Shaine hops to his feet. Initiates, for your Confirmation,
you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.
With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the able and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.


The halfling Janira Gavix remains in the inn. Loaded with her large backpack and a lot of tools and scroll cases, she looks at you expectantly.

A young looking gnome rushes into the Pig's Paunch. His tanned skin accented by the white cook apron worn, his white hair mostly hidden under a colorful scarf. A large backpack hangs on his back, complete with a good sized cooking pot hanging from it. He looks around before approaching the Master of Scrolls.

"I'm sorry for being late Master Shaine." The gnome takes a breath before speaking again, but he does not continue in common. "كان لي لإكمال الوجبة صباح اليوم لمنزل لودج. أنا فقط لا يمكن أن تترك دون التأكد تم القيام به."

I had to complete this morning's meal for the lodge house. I just couldn't leave without making sure it was done.

The gnome stops as he realizes what he's done. His cheek turn a bit red before he sits down in an open space and waits for the Master to finish.

Jec walks into the Pig's Paunch. Under normal circumstances he would avoid this place at all costs. But his VC told him to come here so he did. With a distainful look around the common room he moves quickly towards Master Shaine.

upon reaching the table infront of the Master Jec snaps to a crisp if noisy attention Greetings Master Shaine. Jec Leblanc reporting as ordered Ser. Moving off to the side Jec sets down a massive steel shield.

A tanned black haired woman walks up to te tavern.
"Hmm, this should be it. Hopefully it's not as bad as it appears.."
She opens the door and steps in.

"I stand corrected, it IS as bad as it appeared.."
Spotting the VC, a stern looking human and a gnome she heads towards them.

"Hello gents.", spotting the halfling female, "and lady."
"Mia Rumsfeld responding to your summons Scroll Master Shaine."

Yugatta strolled the streets warily until finally finding the Pig’s Paunch.

This woman must practice humility. One cannot be choose a more humble start than this place.

Listening quietly to the halfling woman's briefing, she stands up at the end and chimes in,

Moving over to where the halfing woman sits, the young gnome Zarzuket sits and begins to think if he's heard anything of the island or the Gillmen.

"Miss Janira, how far off is the Isle of Korthos? The gnome looks around at the other adventurers, smiling as he removes his scarf letting a mop of wild white hair loose. "I am Zarzuket Endiwahd, but please call me Zar.


After you came into the tavern, Master Shaine held his speech and left you with the halfling bard. Your combined knowledge didn´t bring any new facts about the isle of Korthos or Gillmen so far.

Janira pulls out a large leather-bound journal and opens it on the table. Before we set out, we should all get to know each other and review our plan. After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! I’ll go first!

I am the oldest of seven children! At 24 years, i am the only one of my siblings to have come of age so far. I grew up in Eastgate, where my father still works as a porter who employs a dog cart to transport purchased goods from ships and shops to the homes of customers. Me and my family all revere Desna, but i respects most other religions and believe that faith is important to everyone. Within weeks after turning 20 years old, i enlisted with the Pathfinder Society, and although i initially joined to see the world and sample all of the fine food it had to offer, i quickly took to the Scrolls and its focus on learning and preserving knowledge. Soon i will have my work published in one of the Pathfinder Chronicles. After that i plan to pursue a areer as a Pathfinder Chronicler.
Learning is my love and one of the most imptortant things in life! Although i trained most with Kreighton Shaine, i also learned the arts of the whip, blade, and crossbow from Marcos Farabellus and a few spellcasting tricks from Aram Zey, each one of them is a real role model.
I´ve been on several missions since my confirmation, but this will be the first expedition i´m in charge of. I´m so excited about it and expect you to do your best!

Not one to wait for the men, Mia stands up first.
"I am Mia Rumsfeld. I come from a small town. My family takes care of its medicin. I have some experience with the light crossbow and picked up some light magical tricks."

"My deciding to join the society was to see the world while lending my healing skills to the agents of the society.

Zar listens to the others before standing himself, removing the apron and carefully folding it before placing it in his backpack.

"I am Zarzuket Endiwahd and I come from a line of cooks from Eto in Osirion. While growing up there I learned my skills as a linguist and a cook, helping adventurers explore some of the ruins and tombs of the area. I also have some talent as an arcanist."

"Those skills are what have brought me to the Pathfinders and I hope to be of use to this adventure."

At the view of the Pig's Paunch ahead, Jakim allows a small smile to stretch across his face.

Reminds me of the Rusty Dragon back in Sandpoint.

Walking in, Jakim eyes the group surrounding the table and smiles a winning, Varisian grin at all of them. The man is dressed to the nines in red and white including a beautiful flimsy scarf His green eyes shine in amusement at pretty much everything around him.

"Sorry I'm late. The sunrise was so gorgeous I ended up on the other side of town without even noticing."

After listening to the mission briefing, Jakim nods but says nothing as he knows little of the area despite his innate curiosity.

"My name is Jakim, and I have come to join the Pathfinders because shooting arrows at my sister to entertain people for the rest of my life won't make a difference in the world. I plan to do just that."

"Thee would know of this woman's past? Very well." The elven woman before you is thin and attractive, with a light greenish tinge to her skin which you don't think you've ever seen before. Unlike most elves, she also has a deep tan and unusually shaped eyes which mark her as foreign-born. "This woman was born in the civilized land, far away across the sea. This woman wished to see sights and hear sounds and smell odors that were unfamiliar, so this woman signed on as assistant navigator to a trading vessel. Aboard this ship this woman saw many wonders and was happy."

"Then one day the ship was beset by a storm, and sorely damaged, and in the midst of this storm a kraken rose from the depths to feast. Many sailors were plucked from the decks and plunged under the surface to be eaten. This woman found her way to the ship's dinghy and there escaped notice of the beast. hmm my past is in the past. I chose not to dwell on that which has passed. However I strive to grow stronger so that I can protect those that I am chosen to protect. With that Jec slides his shield back into place on his arm and adjusts his sword belt. Shall we be off? If so I must collect Thunder from outside.


Janira Gavix listens intensely to everyone, nodding in between.
You can leave your past behind, you´re all Pathfinders now. Remember: Explore, Report, Cooperate! Doesn´t matter where you are from, what you did before or what sentiments you might have.

On to the details of the mission at hand, Janira says with an eager grin. After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.
The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.

Janira:Everyone should actually have a rope, a light source, food, a way to make fire, any sources of healing, and other essentials. Additionally, items like alchemist’s fire, antitoxins, and the like come in very handy quite often if you have the gold to spare. It is also very important that you keep accurate records of your adventures Everyone who does not have something to write take some of those here.

She passes out writing paper and supplies, so you can keep a journal and write down notes and draw maps about your mission while underway.

Yugatta empties her backpack on the table. There's not much there, just a waterskin, sling and bullets, bedroll, candle, fishhook, flint and steel, and 50 ft of string.

This woman travels light. It appears this woman needs to go quickly to purchase more supplies. With thine permission, this woman will do so immediately and return here within the hour.

Zar lifts his bag up onto the table and begin to sort through the various objects. A large pot with all the components of a cooking kit hangs attached to the outside of the pack. Within the pack Zar pulls out a blanket, bedroll, some silk rope, string and thread, and some trail rations.

Zar then take a couple of pouches from the backpack and empties them out. Within the pouches are ink, an inkpen, two spellbooks, candles, and some parchment, a vial of alchemist fire, and a potion.

"I believe I have everything that I need. I could use something other than rations to make a better meal for us all during the trip, but since we are in a hurry rations will work." Zar seems a bit disappointed at the idea of just rations, but shakes his head to clear his mind before reaching over and taking some of the offered parchment to add to the few pieces he has.

Jakim opens his pack revealing trail rations, a bed roll, a waterskin, and a flint and steel. He adds the paper and writing supplies thankfully and seems to be considering something.

"Something as heavy as torches or rope would throw off my aim. My aim is the one thing I have that I cannot afford to mess with," he states, a bit of disappointment in his voice as if he feels he's letting the group down with his limitations.


After Janira went through your belongings, she stresses the importance of taking notes again: Write down any discoveries you make, it´s really important! Everyone of you should keep his or her own journal!

Of course i don´t mind your horse Ser Jec, but the rest of us will be walking. Halflings have sturdy feet as you surely know. She grins at her hairy barefooted feet. ALso i´m afraid we might not be able tot take a horse into the caverns. I expect some water there. Leaving it outside might be dangerous, there are some wild predators there. It´s your decision.

Same goes for the equipment everyone carries. I can only make recommendations, but i survived untill today, some more missions than you i guess and that equipment always came in handy.

Once Janira feels you are ready for your advenure, she leads you west out of Absalom and through the Cairnlands, picking up any last-minute purchases on the way out of the city.

The first phase of your Confirmation takes you through Absalom, leads across the Cairnlands, along a well-worn path that leads toward Diobel, through the wilderness surrounding the Kortos Mounts, and culminates at the cave entrance noted in Janira’s Confirmation report. The journey through the City at the Center of the World is swift and without incident, and the long trek across the Cairnlands provides a great opportunity to discuss Master Shane’s class on the history of Absalom. Most of the journey is uneventful, but Janira points out landmarks such as siege towers, distant mountains, or distinct flora and fauna along the journey: I bet Master Shaine taught you a lot about the history of Absalom, didn´t he? Anyone knows what those huge Siege Towers are? Or do you know who and what all dwells in those mountains over there?

You have plenty of opportunity to rest and prepare new spells before you come into more dangerous territory.

Mia seems to have been very attentive in Master Shaines history lessons. Some others not so much, what get´s them a comment about attention and duty from Janira.

As the party progresses deeper into the forest, the trees towering overhead begin to shield most of what remains of the day’s sun and the vegetation beneath grows denser.
Janira pauses a moment and pulls out an intricate silver compass emblazoned with the Pathfinder Society logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well.

Nearby falls a tree, broken by age or something else, scaring a host of smaller animals that flee from the cacophonous noise into your direction and swarm around and past you, rabbits, weasels, frogs, all the forest inhabits, as 3 insects the size of dogs emerge from the forest too.

Zar moves up a a few steps, his hands rolling together as if working with dough. He then flicks one hand forward a ball of something flying toward the swarm of insects Yugatta is fighting.

@Mia, I don't think there is a spider that Yugatta is attacking. If I understand right, it's a swarm (actually two swarms) of many small spiders.

GM, bird familiars like the thrush are able to speak 1 language i can.
How would you rule their vocal performance in doing so?
As in, can they do a variety of voices, like high voices and low voices?

This is not mentioned in d20's description, but flavor wise it would be fun if the bird could.

More of a mishap, i´m actually not sure how it happened, it just came out somehow. It´s in, but still hurts a bit.

Jakim Valstovs dropout changes some stuff, but no problem.

Nia Rumsfeld, daze doesn´t work on insects. Most of them and some other stuff are immune to mind affecting effects. Please choose some other action.

No. Swarms like that are immune to weapon damage.


Still have some problems with a dislocated Shoulder and there is a Con tomorrow and on Sunday, hope i can post though.

@Mia: The oil on spiders is kind of a houserule thing.
If you have lampoil, you could throw it on the spiders and then cast spark next round. Not sure how to rule it from then though.
Takes you two actions but sets creatures on fire without saving throw.
Guess i´d allow it to make 1d6 fire damage to balance it with alchemists fire.


FYI: I´ll be running Destiny of the Sands for PbP gameday 2.
If we manage, part 1 and 2, perhaps even 3.
Of course you have are invited.

Apparently i posted everywhere that i won´t have internet over easter holidays but here.
As a general rule, i don´t abandon my games. There might be some delays from time to time as i have to move a lot and am facing two oral graduation exams in the next three months, but the show goes on.

Said Trip was actually nice, since i connected work with a GM101 and a game (although i already played that scenario 4-5 times now).

After we finish this i would like to start destiny of the sands quite soon and hope it will be faster!


I hope you want to continue with me after this game, it should be finished soon.
