I can cast augury 2/week. Are there any weal/woe questions we want answered before we seal ourselves into the tomb?
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh

We could really use a solid front-liner if you've got one.
I feel vaguely insulted. ;)
I don't have good augury suggestion at present.
How are we set for light? Abaal's got a wayfinder but that's just light (which is all that we can probably expect at 1st-2nd levels), but if anyone's got something better that might be a good thing.

Rather than pick my equipment individually, I got lazy and just bought a "wizard's kit" when creating Myantha. The kit came with 10 torches (I'll never understand why.) that I'm rather eager to literally burn through. With a fighter using a wayfinder up front and the wizard/archer burning torches in the back, I think we should have ample light.

Lol Abaal. I know you can melee just fine, but I'd rather not simply hope that we only ever face one thing at a time...
Also I have the light spell known. I think we'll be fine.

Rex has a prismatic crystal. It is worse than light; it raises the light level by 1 step in a 10-ft. radius. Darkness becomes dim light.
I'm glad there are other light sources available.

Sorry. I'm a little paranoid about light since running into a couple of poison-using, sneak-attacking, darkness spitting derro recently. I think we into round 12 of the second fight (the last one going 29).

Heh...I think that was missing a 1! Should have been 162. I was a prepubescent elf! But now I'm all grown up!
Yeah my sorceress, Gwen, just finished a game with this guy . His player played him like a belligerent genius five-year-old. Gwen was a better babysitter than Abaal would have been. ;)

Hmmm...the link didn't lead anywhere. But it sounds like a fun exchange.
Personally, I have a lot more fun when there's some back and forth between characters, so thanks for playing along! :)

Oh I agree, it does make it more fun. And I'll happily play second violin to that kind of an exchange

Sorry. I had to post from my phone which occasionally sucks for pasting web addresses. This guy (with authority!), an actual 37-year-old elf.

Suheyla: In the games I have Gm'd or been in, I think all of them had any animal companions, eidolons, or summoned creatures all go on the initiative of the main character. I honestly didn't think that there was any other way to do it, but after looking at the boards, I find that the rules are a bit ambiguous and can go either way. Look Here and you will see a pretty mixed review. If you would rather the eidolon go on its own initiative, I can begin to do that.. I just thought it was easier to run if everything happened on your one turn. Its up to you.

Yall should recognize this player as Rogar from my Thornkeep game, and also in Na2Te's game Assault on the kingdom of the Impossible..

Same initiative is fine. I just wanted to bring that option up for you, as locally, sharing initiative for animals and such is pretty common, but eidolons often end up treated more like separate characters due higher intelligence and more independence to act on its own. But for PBP, having fewer counts is probably simplest.

Rex raises an interesting question, one I've thought about myself: How much would a character know about his/her own character class?
Here's what I think: Clerics, paladins, and wizards would know exactly what they are and be proud to tell you. Most rogues would probably balk at the title, and pretend to take offense. Barbarians and fighters would call themselves fighters, rangers would call themselves hunters, monks may or may not call themselves monks depending on if they came from a monastery, druids would probably call themselves shamans or nature priests or something similar. But bards and sorcerers are kind of in a weird middle ground, ones whose magic (and other class features) don't come from study or practice and just sort of improve with time.
What do you all think?

I think you are right. I should probably not have made reference to your character class. :)
Rex would call himself a psychic, maybe a seer. ::shrug::
| GM DevilDoc |
GM Lari: After reading that forum, I agree with your point about PbP vs real life.. Thank you for your input.
Levin: I agree with you except in the case of Bards. Bards are performers that would take pride in the fact that they study oral history and retell the old stories, and I think that they would have a very conscious knowledge of the spells they weave and the knowledge they gather from old stories. Just my two cents.. but I think they would know full well their impact on people in general and the party in specific. They would adventure with the anticipation of learning more about the world and to gather more fodder for their tales.

Just to clarify for those that may be wondering about all of the mistakes so far (and in case I forgot to say earlier): I am a very fresh GM. I have only been GM'ing pathfinder for less than a year, and just last month received my star.. I am still learning, and hope to continue to learn for a great many years to come. Should anyone have any comments or concerns, please feel free to speak up at any time.

No worries! Thanks for GMing. :)
I'm a very experienced GM and I make mistakes all the time. In fact, I'm GMing a PbP game right now that is struggling because of some mistakes that I've made. :(

Regarding the magic auras, I think it would actually be the other way around.
3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura. If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make Knowledge (arcana) skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura: DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + 1/2 caster level for a nonspell effect.) If the aura emanates from a magic item, you can attempt to identify its properties (see Spellcraft).
Attempting to ascertain the properties of a magic item takes 3 rounds per item to be identified and you must be able to thoroughly examine the object. (DC 15 + item's caster level)
| GM DevilDoc |
Yes, identify the properties of the spell, but not the spell itself. K. Arcana reads: Identify a spell effect that is in place Arcana 20 + spell level
Also, This, This, and Thisare just some of the posts I poured over, trying to figure this out. Basically, the spell is there. You have detected that it is there, and even detected the aura as per the detect spell. However, but did not identify the trap.. until just now with Zach's post. So you knew something was magical about the statues, and knew the class of spell, but according to my research, unless someone casts Identify, there is only so much Spellcraft can tell you about an active spell since you are not able to see it being cast.
What are your opinions?
Levin Hessel
|
Ah ok. I was thinking about magic item properties and forgot all about magical traps. Yea that's fine. I still think it'd be Knowledge (arcana) to recognize the school of magic, but I guess it makes sense that Spellcraft wouldn't identify a trap (otherwise any wizard would be just as good of a rogue as a rogue, heh).

Moved from Gameplay for derail.
Oh nice. I figured you were just burning through four Dust of Lunaries every time (which I believe I've seen people do, arguing that it doesn't say you can't just pile on extra materials to a spell). Glad to see you didn't opt for that total rules-cheese option haha
In the Alchemy Manual it explicitly says you can't—though it shouldn't need to because bonuses from the same source never stack. ;)
Reagents do not stack with either themselves or one another, and are expended after use.
I will admit, though, that it is a pretty cheesy build still. I'm not quite sure whether I like him or not.
Levin Hessel
|
Hm. I've definitely seen people add like six different components to a spell to get extra little bonuses, but maybe they were from a different sourcebook or something. I did think it was total bull**** though.
As for your build, the only real problem is putting all your eggs in one basket-- spending a feat and a trait on basically one spell (and its later versions), and not every enemy is even susceptible to it. I once saw a similar character who'd beefed up his fireball spell, and even monsters immune to fire took half damage (or maybe a quarter), so it was never outright useless. I know I'll be changing Levin's build after this to compensate for his utter uselessness against mindless undead.

@ GM DevilDoc: Thanks for the clarification. :)
| GM DevilDoc |
I feel I owe everyone an apology.. I thought I could handle GM'ing an intricate module such as this while still balancing school and all of the work that entails, but I am failing miserably. I do believe that after this game finishes, my GM'ing will come to a screeching halt and my playing, if I continue, will be extremely limited until I am able to complete school. I am not providing the level of game I normally do, nor am I upholding my post rate. Please just bear with me through this.. I promise you I am aware of my subpar performance and it bothers me just as much, if not more so, than it may you.

We have pretty much finished off the villain, haven't we? Would it be helpful to you to wrap his one up now so you will have time for your studies?
| GM DevilDoc |
You have partially finished off the villain.. There is still more to come in that respect.. and to be honest, no. It would truly gall me to leave a game unfinished and so horribly run. I personally would like to persevere, but it is up to yall.
As for my current studies, I had two massive tests earlier this week, and two end of course exit exams today. Next week I have two finals and a retest for one of my exit tests (Damn the a#!&+&@s and their "All the answers are right, but which one is MORE right" tests). Following this, I get a week off before I start the next term.. which will be exponentially easier, with only two classes and one clinical period.

No worries. I think you are doing great. :) The only frustrations that I am experiencing are around my own character—it's been a good reminder to me why I don't like playing full casters. ;)
