I'm an orphan from the same campaign as Kyrianna -- will also need to make some small changes, but would love to be considered.

What does "PvP" mean? I've new to gaming (have only been playing a little over a year, but I am intrigued by the idea of an online game. If you are still recruiting, I'd love to play a rogue of some sort.

Scarab Sages

PvP is Player versus Player. He basically says no picking a physical fight with another player.

Sczarni

Thank you Silvertounge!

@ maprovencher - ST was exactly right.

I'm going to start certifying characters as complete throughout the day.

If you find yourself uncertified, I will tell you why.

Good job so far everyone.

Ulfgard Strongarm wrote:
Its funny, everybody says fighter is a substandard melee, but they are always present.

It's also how you roleplay and portray the character. Are rangers always range? No, we do have two-weapon fighting rangers. We have archer archetype fighters and even those who don't take that archetype used bonus feats for ranged. The class alone, does not say whether the person is ranged, melee, arcanist, etc. You have to look at the feats and gear and other things to see where exactly they are headed with the character. Not to mention some melee fighters are better than others if you think really hard in your build.

@Kaelifax as said before PVP is when you attack another player, everyone has different reasons for doing this, but some do this solely to gain gold and other things, which is like cheating in my opinion, but you could kill off the entire party if you manage to survive for thousands of gold if the DM allowed it. I agree that PVP should be disallowed. Now PVP when you are running a game with multiple groups would be a different story, but this isn't one of those games.

Thanks!

While Kaelifax is only a 15 point build based on the rules of that campaign (and thus needing updates, especially to his gear), his history, future goals and motivations are all present in spoilers in the alias -- which would include his fears -- though if you think something's missing (if there's anything else you want to know, for instance), please let me know and I'll provide it.

Also, @Jack -- I think you meant to direct your answer to maprovencher and not me. :)

Sczarni

Kaelifax is now complete. :) (minus crunch tweaks)

Since this appears to be winding down, I want to wish everyone the best of luck. To me, at least, all of the applications are great!

Sczarni

I'll be reviewing submissions and post a decision by 12am PST on Saturday.

Please finished up or submit your applications by then.

Best of luck to everyone.

Good Luck Everyone!

I've tweaked Ragnarok a bit. I noticed that we get winter gear for free if we grew up in the area which Ragnarok has. This means he's actually able to afford Leather Armor, although he is still essentially penniless. Also I added to his origin to explain why he knows Skald and Giant which wasn't very well explained in the first post.

RAGNAROK FIMBULWINTER
A large young man in his late teens, he is probably one of the biggest humans you have seen. His body is hairy and his hair comes in all white. He keeps his facial hair well trimed. He has blue eyes. He is obviously of Ulfen descent. He tries to speak with a Skald accent, but he grew up in Heldren, so sometimes the result is comical.

Ragnarok's mother Crystal arrived at Heldron alone, pregnant and with nothing besides a wagon to get started. She never told anyone where she was from, and Ragnarok never got the chance to ask as she died giving birth to him. Her last words were his name. Ragnarok grew up poor and fairly wild. Some villagers would take him in, but he mostly lived off the land. He befriended an old Ulfen mercenary in the town while in his early teens and convinced him to teach him Giant and Skald and how to wield a sword properly. Recently, in exchange for him occasionally guarding the town, he has gathered up enough money to buy a greatsword of his very own. Its purchase has left him penniless and he is in desperate need of a job. This is his short term goal. Long term, he really wants to discover who his father is. He has a fear of fire, he has dreams of being burned. He cares deeply for the woods and forests surrounding Heldron, and indeed all woods and feels a oneness with the earth that he finds hard to explain

Good luck to everyone, and may the best party be formed.

This is Silvertongue, submitting Kekaul. A Shoanti Ranger with the Falconer archetype.

His backstory and stats are in the profile page. I figured the drawback, Haunting Regret could manifest in failing to save his sister, watching his mother die, or the shame of abandoning his father. In essence, he's got survivor's guilt.

If there's anything missing or left out, just let me know!

Oliver is updated. He was built with a 15 so I bumped him up to 20, and he had too much gold from the last recruitment so I took him back to average.

His backstory includes a goals and a fears section, and the why he's in Heldren, how he makes a living, and who he cares for are all in the first paragraph.

Oh, and yes he's a Lore Oracle.

I'm going to withdraw my interest post. Have fun!

Man, I've been noting a number of recruitments lately have been having a lot of people drop out...

And wow! Humans, Rangers, and Northern Ancestry are in the lead!

The trait seems almost the obvious choice, what with a Cold Resist 2. That was the one thing that bugged me about RoW, is that the winter is supposed to be an off-season anomaly, but almost every campaign trait was built for winter. Part of the reason I took the one I did was just because it didn't have a winter specific theme to it.

True, but cold resist 2 is nice at low levels but really doesn't pan out much at higher levels (like all resists). Still, it is a decent trait in and of itself, just a lot of applicants wanting it is all.

I was having the opposite issue, Oliver, in that the campaign's player's book is all about how it's winter-themed and you'll be heading north and encouraging you to take winter-related traits, archetypes, and includes rules for wintery familiars...

...and then you start in Helden, far from north and winter. I suspect that a lot of people (like me) came up with the idea of a northerner based on the Player's Guide -- which got us toward Northern Ancestry as a campaign trait.

Maybe its heroic karma. Those most likely to deal with the threat have a karmic destiny to be in Heldren at this time.

Submitting Salvia Hardheart, human rogue. (Apologies for not knowing the ins and out of posting here on Paizo. Thanks for reading!)

Salvia Hardheart / Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)/
Neutral Good / 18 years old
Profession: Barmaid
Main weapons – 2 short swords; Armor – chain shirt
STR 10 DEX 18 CON 14 INT 14 WIS 10 CHA 10
AC 18 (with armor); Touch AC 14; HP 11; FORT +2; REFLEX +6; WILL +0
Feats – Dodge; Weapon Finesse
Traits – Poverty-Striken; Vigilante Witch Hunter
Languages – Common; Elven; Dwarven; Halfling

Ten winters ago, eight-year-old Salvia and her twelve-year-old brother, Dalen, were found burrowed into the side of a hill. The children were starving and freezing to death. Fortunately, a kind and generous farmer found them. Dalen quickly adapted to life on the farm, endearing himself to the farmer and his wife. Slavia, however, was tormented by nightmares and unwilling to submit to the household’s rules and routines. She soon became a chronic run-away. Only Dalen could ever find her, usually in the woods, in a make-shift shelter.

The local community of Haldren intervened from time to time, doing their best to keep the girl from harm. But Salvia was not easy. She picked fights with peers and stole food, coins and unattended trinkets. As a result, by the time she had reached her 15th birthday, she had worn out her welcome with five different Heldren families. Dalen took the last name of his adoptive family, but Salvia proudly adopted a back-handed nickname given to her by the townsfolk: Salvia Hardheart.

Through the years, Salvia’s nightmares grew worse. In them, she relives her parents’ and another sibliing’s (a girl’s) deaths again and again, at the hands of a winter witch. Frogs fall from the sky, black tentacles grab her mother, and her father’s face erupts in festering blisters. Then the temperature drops. After both her parents are entombed in ice, the witch turns on the children. Though Salvia runs and runs, she can not escape the evil witch. Rays of freezing air and ice slice through her eyeballs, her nostrils, her mouth. As she begins to freeze from the inside out, the witch's cackle rises to ear-splitting decibels, and Salvia wakes up screaming. For hours afterward, Salvia is convinced that the witch is nearby, ready to attack again without warning.

Dalen, although desperate to help his sister, insists that the events of her nightmares never happened. There never was another sibling named Frayla, two years older than Salvia. In Dalen’s memory, their father –an adventurer—simply left home one day and never came back. Their mother struggled for a while, but eventually could not pay rent, and the family ended up on the streets of Cassomir, penniless. Unfortunately, Their mother simply starved to death, because she gave every morsel of food to her children.

When Dalen turned 20, he married his long-time girlfriend, Lena, the oldest daughter of a local woodcutter. The couple purchased a small farmstead and invited Salvia to live with them. So, for the last few years, Salvia has been living in a house, in relative peace, with her brother and sister-in-law. A year ago, shortly after Lena gave birth to their first child, Salvia landed a job at the local tavern. She's doing well there, and hasn't pissed off any customers yet.

Salvia is saving money, buying things and sticking them in a backpack. She's also been taking swordplay lessons from the son of a blacksmith. Her stated plan is to assemble adventuring gear and leave Haldren to make her way in the world as a security guard for one of the halfling caravans that comes through town from time to time. She tells everyone that she wants to travel, see the world. Secretly, she has no interest in caravans or travel. Her plan is to trek north to hunt down her parents’ murderer before the witch comes back to kill her, or worse…goes after those she loves most: Dalen, Lena and precious little Dalen Jr.

Will be submitting this character, though don't take it as a complete submission (in fact don't click through) because I'm planning some major refactoring. Just want my name on the board.

Sczarni

Thanks Ilya and maprovencher!

Please finish up your submissions beofre 12am PST on Saturday, 04/12/2014.

If you have questions let me know here or PM me.

I will be taking Sunday to make decisions. :)

Took a while, but I finally managed to sit down and rework the character a little bit. See the profile for some crunch, but note that I still need to rework her possessions.

Backstory:
Kara was born into Golarion destined for... something. What that something is, she doesn't quite know. She just knows that there have been far too many odd occurrences in her life driving her in a direction not entirely of her choosing to call them coincidences. This destiny, brought onto her by the gods or by fate, drove Kara to try and learn more about the future. She began to study divination, against her parents' will.

During her studies, Kara frequently sought out the advice and tutelage of a Varisian Harrower named Verla, further angering her parents. Though at first she went only to Verla in order to receive a Harrowing, she eventually found herself learning how to perform a Harrowing herself. Verla recognized Kara's abilities as a diviner, and fostered her increasing curiosity by training her. Unfortunately, Verla was eventually accused of being a petty thief and con artist, and was arrested. Kara continued on in her stead, despite the danger imposed by the law.

Kara has since wandered Taldor and now finds herself in Heldren. Here, she uses her Harrowing ability to make a living, but plans to leave as soon as the law catches up to her. Kara's short term goal is to just get by, and practice her Harrowing ability. Her long term goal is to prove to herself that she is a great as she feels she was destined to be. Her greatest fear is that she will fail to do the great things she was destined for.

Questions for DM
1) I only have 70 gold starting wealth, and the Harrow Deck, which is a major part of her life, costs 100 gold. Would you allow me to have that as a possession, if I were to forgo any other major possessions (such as daggers, scroll case, etc.)? This could be worked out in the discussion thread before we start.

2) Since Harrowing can involve revealing vague story details, I would avoid doing so often. The idea would be to very occasionally perform a Harrowing, and to allow you as GM to do the foreshadowing. I'm open to discussing how this would work in more detail with you.

Thanks for considering the character!

Sczarni

I have no issue with Harrowing. I actually like it a lot.

There are traits for Varisians (maybe from ROTRL) that would give you a harrow deck. I'm OK with you taking one of those. :)

Thanks for the tip! I did a quick search and found the following:

Harrow Born: You start play with a harrow deck passed down from a relative. Because of your skill with fortune-telling, you gain a +1 trait bonus on initiative checks.

Will you allow the cantrip Breeze?

Sczarni

Yes and yes

Sciath Nalis.
Inquisitor and Witch Hunter.

Great, then I think my submission is done (just need to give it a once over, but will wait on your decision to do that).

Yay! A witch hunter!

Wait... <.< I'm a witch .__.

A laddy that sounds like a joke. A witch and a witchhunter enter a bar...

Well, at least I won't be alone. Right Lina? *Pulls her little lemming familiar from her pouch, nuzzling it* So cute~

Don't worry, while I like a bit of intra-party animosity I don't believe in letting it get too far. I'm sure our initial suspicion of each other will blossom into a beautiful friendship.

I am submitting Daevin Arkinfald, arcane deulist extraordinare! I still have some tinkering with gear, but the rest is resolved.

Sczarni

I've started looking through submissions and this is going to be so difficult...

...good work people.

@Sciath: It could be like the Odd Couple! Two people with different world views/power sources, having a rough time trying to come to terms with each other, only to find common ground!

@GMDSP: We try our best n_n

@Ryksa Maybe my drama nerd is showing a bit too much, but my first thought was "It's not a spoon *poof* it's a cat!"... Either way, I'd definitely pay to see opening night of that performance :-)

Or just watch this, Daevin!

Serious classic, that!

Hey Tilnar/Kaelifax, it's Aardvark

I understand, that they did it to prepare the PC's, but they also announced the guide as a bit of a spoiler. They felt that they wanted it to be a secret, but that it could be tough on the PC's to be too far from prepared. So, I understand the guide for having clues for it, but the way it is written, it kind of also suggests that they be still unaware/unprepared for it. I just think that they had WAY too many cold specific traits, and could have offered more non-cold related to help.

All campaign traits are supposed to help ingrain ones character into the game. It'd be odd for Northern Ancestry to grant fire resistance, or something that really won't play out in the game. Like my trait, Failed Winter Witch: Yes, I get a small bonus to casting cold spells because that is what I cast, and having Skald or Hallit as a language is beneficial to the game (I chose Skald because I'm going all Hallit in Iron Gods with a crazy Kellid Barbarian).

Yes, it does sort of spoiler to the characters, but then again they are going into a game called "Reign of Winter", not "Reign of Summer", though that would probably be just as epic a game!

Just my two cents on it n_n

Again, I totally understand, I just disagree with how they did it. I also understand that it is my own personal issue with it (though there was some fuss over it when it first appeared).

To me it just sets up way too many PC's originating from/prepared for the region to happen across sending them there. Some may say it's karmic or fated, but that is just another of my own personal peeves. Once you make a PC fated, then they can tend to have a certain level of implied plot armor.

I'm not saying this is a big issue, just that I am not surprised by the number of takers of the particular trait, and that I think the designers could have spread the traits a little more smoothly. Just my opinion.

Okay. We have 20 applicants with completed(ish) characters, so I am closing submissions as of now.

I would like everyone who is on the list of completions to state whether or not they are still interested.

It is nearly 7am on the west coast now, and I will consider everyone who reaffirms their interest by Noon. If I have not heard from you by then, I will assume you have dropped out.

Once I have the final list, I will take until Sunday evening (or sooner) to make my decisions.

Good luck everyone!

Definitely still interested.
Best of Luck, everyone.
