But can I take/substitute abilities from a archetype/alternate class to customize my own character as I level up?
Taken from the Adavanced Player's Guide:
"Typically, the best time for a player to adopt alternate class features and significantly revise his character is when leveling up between adventures, though he should always check with the GM before doing so, as she may wish to work significant changes to a character into the campaign."
GM Aarvid
I would also check the PFS guide to ensure there are not limitations on archetypes (unless you are just speaking in general as opposed to PFS specific rules).

Sorry for the late post today. Was a crazy day - our 3 year old had a birthday party and just as that was starting we noticed our refrigerator had died with a bad compressor.
So we spent the last part of today, transferring food to a deep-freeze and shopping for a replacement. Should get a post up in the next couple hours.

No worries. I've had all that happen to me over the years more than once. but than again I'm old.

Anyone think that there is a box inside the red chest? A trapped one.
GM Aarvid
Interesting discusions on whether a creature with reach advantage can be countered with aoo by its target. In this case an elf grabbing a viper. Or in the usual case of a large creature trying to grab a PC not holding a reach weapon. No specific ruling either way. I always experienced and allowed a PC to aoo an creature trying to grab it but bt RAW that may not work. Anyway, Archmoon succeeds.

Well, if you were not sure about the subject I was completely in the dark, so I tried my luck and used some common sense on what an heroic figure would do (a ranger in this case), even if disregarding his own safety.
Even being new to the game I know that rules are only guidelines and we have a certain amount of freedom (I guess depending on the GM), and that's why I tried my luck. I guess it worked. :)

traps ahh there aren't no traps. LOL great roll hope there aren't any traps inside the chest.

Sorry to hear of your loss.
GM Aarvid
Definitely our condolences to you and your family, Thosar. Always difficult, but especially so around the holidays.
GM Aarvid
XP comes at the end of the scenario. I will send scanned/signed certs as PDF documents you can print.
Hope all is going ok. Pace is about what I was expecting. It could slow down with the holidays and travel etc.
I was more worried about the maps, but seems to have worked ok for a semi-non-combat encounter. Should work ok once a real combat occurs.

On a side note and still regarding my archetype question, I found the information I was looking for in the PFS Guide:
"If you wish to apply a legal archetype to your character, you may do so at 1st level as normal. Additionally, you may apply an archetype to an existing class any time you level up as long as the first alternate ability does not replace an ability granted at a previous level."
- Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play
I can't believe I missed it the first time.
So, for example, I am a core Ranger and I want specialize into Trapper, I can do so until 4th level, because at 4th level the core Ranger learns the Spell feature which directly replaces the Trap feature (5th level) from the Trapper archetype.
Although I'm still unsure if I'm changing or not..
As for the holidays, I myself am traveling, but it will not be a problem, since I'm bringing with me my laptop and I will probably have internet connection. But I completely understand if things get slower or even if someone becomes unable to post.
And since we are speaking of holidays, I would like to wish the happiest holidays to everyone. :)

Excellent find Archmoon...thanks for sharing. I had several characters I wanted to apply an archetype to but figured I had already missed the boat. I will have to check the restrictions and see if I still can.
I will be driving to visit my family in Florida before Christmas and should return before New Years. I should be able to post most days, but it could be short. Hopefully we can get one or two more checks off the list before then.
I also want to wish all the best to each of you and your families.

The idea for Eli is to get into the orphanage unseen through basement access or second story type of access. I would suppose a lot of skill checks would be in order let me know what I need to do on that front.

Guys, just FYI - due to my job, I had to go to Naples, Italy urgently and net is very scarce (read:bloody expensive) here. I will be back on Tuesday. Feel free to GM PC me by then, and I will try to post when posssible by then. Cheers

This has been great. It has been alot more skill and roleplay focused than I thought it would be.

@Thessel sorry to hear that. I actually enjoy the pbp seeing i don't have time for a live game. it is very different but I quite like it.
@Thosar good to have you back Gyness says hi

A stupid question, and I guess the answer is a resounding No, but here goes nothing: May I Aid another (untrained, of course) to Archmoon with his Sense motive check?
@Eli - Will rejoin Gyness real soon, if site starts working properly :-(
GM Aarvid
Good luck Thessel, you had a good character concept. Hopefully you are able to get games in another format. There are many groups that run virtual tabletops where you can finish in 5-6 hours. I wish I could play more of those but does not fit my schedule.
Sorry for the rest of you with Paizo site acting up I did not get to post. Will try to make up some time in the air as they say.
GM Aarvid
At this point in the exchange you think you have some pretty good information to report back to the paladin. With neighbors and kids watching, you start to get an uneasy feeling about things escalating too much further...
GM Aarvid
And just to let you know, you just happened to pick the two skills-based tasks first, so for the combat oriented, your time is coming. Fear not :-)
I will be on holiday travel tomorrow and through Christmas, so my posts may be sporadic the next few days.

All right bring on the pain.
Have a safe trip.
GM Aarvid
That was interesting and well played. Once the imp was stunned and blinded, I figured it lost a bit of altitude in its inability to act. Although with magical flight it did not fall to the ground, it could not do much else. :-)
GM Aarvid
The question has been asked about what is next after we finish here...I figure we probably have 1-2 weeks left (2 acts).
I am more than happy to run first steps #2 once we finish this round if you are interested. Even if you choose not to continue, please let me know if there is anything that would make for more enjoyable pbp experience. This was my first time as gm under pbp, so I would be interested in what worked and what did not.
If there is enough interest, we can recruit to fill in the vacancies for part 2.

I would love to go into any other PFS PbP. I have only finished so far First steps #3 with another PC, and tried once this same module, without finishing it (never saw the docks or Osyrian place). So if you decide to run anything else after this - I'm your elf! ;-)
Elindriel Firesong

Personally, I think you're doing an awesome job, and however you make the maps work, I think you should post something about it, 'cause it's the best I've seen thus far in my short time doing PbP. There are still a lot of GMs out there doing excel spreadsheets on google docs and color coding grids for terrain...
EDIT - oh, and I'm in for First Steps #2, when the time comes.
Eli Xaviez

Yes very intereted would love to continue or run anything else. This has been a great experience for me.
Thosar Seltenmus
|
Ah yes - what Elindriel said about the maps is so true. The only (real) reason why I am not GM-ing something on the boards here is because I have no idea how to make great looking maps like you, along with proper counters and all.
If you could share some "tutorial" how you make those, I (and I believe a lots of others) would be very grateful. Thanks.
Archmoon
I'm not only in for part 2, but also in for part 3, which when complete will get us to 2nd level. And if I could make a bold suggestion, I would love to continue forward with other PFS adventures beyond First Steps - unless you get tired of us of course ;)
As for the vacancies for part 2, I would suggest avoiding the classes that are already in play, maybe getting someone who is from a different alignment and faction so we can get more variety, if possible.
As a side note (unrelated) - I noticed that we are only supposed to choose our faction at the end of part 3, however when we create this PFS pbp characters we are forced to choose one before hand, I only noticed this after we started playing and I think it's kinda of important.
In conclusion, Yes I'm 100% in for part 2.
GM Aarvid
Archmoon, my understanding is that I can change/fix your faction at the end of all 3 parts. I have not tried recording them yet (since we have not finished, but will see how it works.)
If anyone wants to change factions from the one on their profile, let me know by the end of the 3rd part and I will see what I can do. The 3 parts intend to showcase all the different faction leaders to give you a flavor of each.
On a side note, I will be flying to Seattle on business tomorrow and may have limited access to the internet for a few days...so I posted a bit more tonight and will see what I can do from the hotel.
GM Aarvid
Ok, sorry again for the delay. I should be back home tomorrow evening assuming flight goes ok and will get us back on pace.

Yes have sage and easy travels. eagerly awaiting your return.
