Ford Benett
"HOUND!" Ford yelled, watching as the feral fellow fell at the feet of his aggressors. Gritting his teeth and growling, Ford brought back his weapon and slammed it hard into the goblin dog, wincing a little as he heard the snap of bone beneath his weapon.
Ford felt a rush of cold blood and adrenaline in his body. He'd killed something... that was the first time he'd ever even fought a real fight with his weapon, much less killed anything. It gnawed at him a little... no, now was the time to act. Hound needed help - he could ponder this later.
Looking up at the goblin, Ford dislodged it from the rat dog's body and wound back again. "Get lost, you little pest!" Ford threatened the goblin, stepping forward and swinging underhanded, hoping perhaps he could simply punt the little beast away.

Only the bird is left.

Good... I think it's still alive. Now...! Ford turned back to Hound, placing his mace at his side and kneeling, grabbing his hammer pendant and concentrating. "Torag, I ask for a bit of the flames from your forge. Reignite his spark!" Ford watched his hand glow as he touched it to Hound's arm, imbuing his divine magic into him.

The first thing Zova does is check her fallen foes for supplies, specifically the goblin who seemed to have arrows. "I was pretty sure things were looking pretty bleak back there for me, glad to see I was wrong." Hound struggles to his feat as the rest of his companions take the time to deal with the Goblin remain and its companions.

With a few mystic words and hand gestures later and the majority of Hounds wounds seal, leaving faint scars.
"Now that the fight is over, has anyone seen my rope? Hound looks around for the rope he dropped in the fight.
Ford Benett
As Hound looked around for his rope, Ford's eyes were preoccupied with the results of his battle. After staring for a moment, he speaks up, his voice still somewhat quiet. "...you know, this is the first real fight I've actually ever been in? I mean, that my life was in danger from? Much less, the first life I've ever taken. I read plenty of books heroes and battles, but... I... I think I feel kind of sick."
His eyes traipsed over to the unconscious goblin. "...I know I was under some pressure, but... I didn't... I didn't want to kill anything..."
Zova Lex
Zova listens to Ford's speech and steps beside him, patting him on the back. "The feeling passes. I remember my first kill well. A serial killer based in Cheliax. We chased him down and had him cornered, but then he took a hostage. I thought I could reason with him when he..." Her voice trails off as she looks into the river.
"You will find that you may dream of this moment for some time. That too will pass. Remember that the lives you take in self defense and for the protection of society as a whole are sacrifices for a better world. As a Hellknight, I do not enjoy killing, not even justified executions... but I always remember that sometimes it is a necessary act. Remember this and it will make you strong enough to face the forces of chaos."
Hokina
Hound finds one end of the rope stuck between two rocks within reach of the shore.
After many throws, Alleran is able to get a rope across the river. The rope lands near Ford.
After finding a anchor point on his side, Alleran knots his rope end secures the knot there.
Ford or Hound could easily find a place to anchor the other side of the rope.
Ford Benett
Ford helps to anchor the rope and assist the others across the river. Listening to Zova speak, he frowns, taking in the information quietly before replying. "I... I'm not sure I can agree with that. Not entirely. I... I don't know what to think... but thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I appreciate it."
Zova Lex
Wait, what fox's whimpering?
Zova only shrugs at Ford's reply. "As you wish. Some people are not meant for the dirty dealings of death. Still, in my experience someone must play the part of the executioner. As it so happens, Abadar has allowed me to play that part in life naturally and while I was in Cheliax, the beneficial effects were clear. It is not pleasant business, but just as the life of Paladin may not be the easiest, I play my role so that no one else has to. I am sure you will find your own path in time, but it may be best to put this encounter behind you." Her tone softens and surprisingly so does her facial features. "I am sorry."
She then turns to Hound. "You seem to still be injured somewhat, let me heal you." With that her hands glow blue with positive energy and she lays a hand where Hound is wounded, allowing the healing wave to wash over him."[/b]
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Should we investigate the fox?
Zova Lex
Zova frowns. "Well then, this isn't good. That trap is hardly humane. And I have no patience for useless suffering." She approaches the fox and sees if she can find a way to open it without harming the creature further.
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Handle animal: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 18 I just realized I should try to roll this to make the fox friendlier.
Ford Benett
Ford nodded, forcing a smile to his face back to Zova. This was simply something he'd have to ponder for a little bit.
Perking up, he looked as Zova seemed to notice something he didn't. Following her, he found the trapped fox. "Poor thing... here, let me have a look. I've seen traps like these in our tunnels."
Kn. Engineering: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Hokina
Ford recognizes that this is a conibear trap, but that is very odd. The fox has teeth marks from a trap, but the trap has no teeth. The way the trap is holding the fox is also near impassable to have happen naturally.
The fox may have been caught by a different trap and placed in this one as bait.
Ford knows how to remove the trap. No check needed for Ford to free the fox.
Without Ford's information it would take a DC 14 STR check to free the fox.
Zova's words and healing relaxes the fox. It is no longer crying and is only tugging lightly at its leg.
Zova Lex
Strength Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Zova easily pulls open the trap and shakes her head. "The true animals are the ones who left this fox here to suffer. I wouldn't be surprised if it was those goblins we saw earlier who left it here for shear amusement. Those chaotic beasts..."
Ford Benett
Ford frowned as he looked at the unconscioous goblin he'd knocked out. "Maybe they were trying to lure us in for an ambush. We've used that trick on kobolds before using gemstones... though they're actually hard to outwit. I'll give these little blighters some credit, inhumane as it is, it's clever...
Ford watched the fox stare up at Zova and smirked. "I think he likes you, Zova. Then again, I would too if I was in his place."
Ford held out his hands and nodded at the potion vials. "Lemme have a look at those. I studied potions a little while working in our abbey's infirmary. I might be able to hazard a guess at what they are."
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Apparently, I look at them and think they're bottles of maple syrup. I guess weapon and armor magic iis more my area of expertise...
Zova Lex
Zova looks down at the critter and can't help but smile as it looks up at her, though doesn't let her companions see this. "It cannot be helped; after all, Hellknights are naturally likable people." With that, she looks through her belongings for some trail rations to feed the fox.
I KNEW i forgot something on my character sheet: trail rations. Can i assume i had bought a weeks worth back at town before heading out? I may have forgotten but I doubt the inquisitor of the god of cities and trade, who doesn't know how to hunt... would LEAVE a city, knowing she won't be back for a while, WITHOUT buying food to feed herself.
Zova Lex
After feeding the fox, she turns to her allies. "I think we should head to the north. But first, let me see if I can't identify the potions by taste."
She takes a sip of each.

After traveling a few more hours, the dense trees and thick brush of the forest give way. Parting seemingly in respect for the titanic darkwood tree that dominates this clearing. Several times taller than a temple minaret, in one direction the obviously ancient tree reaches into the sky with branches like a giant’s arms, while in the other it plumbs the earth with roots thicker than a man’s waist. Its limbs broad and strong, its bark thick and so richly colored as to almost be black, and its leaves the size of bucklers, the giant thing is less a tree and more a cathedral of boughs and branches.
Near by is a campsite unbroken, but much is ruined from weeks of weathering.
This elder darkwood tree is the most ancient of its kind in Darkmoon Vale. Said to have been carried as a sapling from the Hissing Jungle and planted here in the distant past by Deirzir, the Eagle of The First Way, himself, the druids that once guarded the forest claimed this darkwood to be the root from which all Darkmoon grew.
The trunk is 30 feet in diameter, with low, easy to climb branches and stands almost 300 feet tall. The branches go out an additional 35 feet beyond the trunk.

Hound recovers from his fall in battle by spending the time gathering his gear then retrieving his rope. As Lady Zova attends to her new friend, Hound turns to Ford.
"Thank you friend Ford, your timely healing saved me from a terrible fate," Turning to the rest of the party. "And thank you all for covering for me when I fell, I feel ashamed at my situation." His head hangs low for a few minutes. As equipment is looked over, Hound regrets not picking up a back up weapon before leaving.

"...oh! Right! The moss! Let's find it then. he said, snapping out of his thoughts and quickly closing in on the tree trunk. But as he did, his eyes caught sight of the ruined camp, blinking at it before drawing his weapon. Who built that... and where are they now?
