Dragonlance: Heroes of a New Age

Game Master Shalafi2412

What came before...:

Six months have passed since the War of Souls, an epic conflict that spanned the world of Krynn. After 39 years when the Gods have been silent and magic flowed unrestrained by the Moons, the Gods of Krynn have returned. The first among the Light, Paladine walks the earth as a mortal, while the Dark Queen Takhisis lies dead, leaving their places vacant among the heavens. Ansalon still bears scars of the decades where evil reigned upon the world in the Godless times. The Dark Knights of Neraka still subjugate numerous lands and the wicked minotaurs have begun a campaign of conquest. Many among the righteous and good have suffered in the Age of Mortals. Solamina's forces are weakened by the war, the elves are in exile, the Kender lands burned to ash and the dwarves in ever conflict with their darker brethren. Decades ago, the Companions saved the world from the brink of ruin. Now once again, heroes must rise and bring balance back to the world. Will you be among them?

In the Lab

Once Alathea has aided Terevalis, she will begin to craft an item that she believes will aid her and her allies in their quest.

Alathea will attempt to create the Phylactery.

Spellcraft Use Meditative Touch on self. Cast Guidance. 1d20 + 8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 4 + 1 = 24 DC 20

Success!

High God, I assume we sell at least one of the items to gain the extra 500 GP to create this item.

You certainly can go to town if you're short on money to for the crafting cost. Make sure to mark down what you used to get the 500 SP.

Once the catalouging of items n the library is done, the Black Robe will sit down and begin the process of searching through books, a familiar and welcome memory of things before the fall of Silvanesti
Lingusituics 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (19) + 17 = 36

After a long search through the various materials in the library and piecing information together by combining historical, geographical and informational sources.

Among the books you find a historic record that reads:
____

SO IT WAS that Dereg Raynhold, Knight of the Sword, struck north from the hinterlands where his gods-given blade had aided in the Defeat of Sylvyana, Ghoul-Queen of the Silvanesti; he left behind the druid Waylorn, and the righteous throng of Silvanost, and at their insistence sought out the fabled Fountain of
Renewal.

THERE IN THE NORTH beyond Istar’s merchant cities, did Dereg take his blade. Great was his sorrow at the foulness which had afflicted him; Dark was the blood on his sword, and darker still the stain on his soul.

UNTO THE LAST did Dereg struggle to overcome the challenges of the Fountain’s guardians, bereft of the light of his blade and heavy-hearted. But triumph was his, and into the Fountain did he plunge his sword and arm. Bright was the power of the gods of Redemption. With their blessing, both knight and sword were one again, hale and sharp, keen as the wind of Solamnia.

___

Doing more comparisons find materials mentioning something called "The Fount of Renewal" which seems to be related to the historic record stated above. This appears to be something that would be able to cleanse the Tear of its taint if its location were found and its properties are used By cross referencing old maps of the region with new ones as well as comparing clues from various tomes you're able to pinpoint the location of the Font, smack dab in the Great Moors of Nordmaar. As soon as Terevalis pinpoints the location there is a cold breeze in the room and your hairs stand on end. Manifesting from the Ethereal is the beautiful elven ghost that once appeared before you when the Dragonlance of Huma was claimed.

The woman speaks, "You have found the knowledge you seek heroes. Now make haste in your journey to Nordmaar and cleanse the tear of the stain that the Lord of Bones has brought to the light of Quenesti Pah. Only with both tears restored shall the way forward be open. Thus is your destiny."

With that she fades back into the realm of spirits leaving the room silent and the heat of the room slowly restoring itself.

As for knowledge of the Moors themselves, that will require a Knowledge Geography or History check (whatever is better).

With a determination in his voice after the message is given.
We must depart but I have pressing business to take care of beyond the walls of Flotsam. I shall return in two days time. Give me the magical items we have and I shall trade them for things which would be more useful, or take them to the Mageware shop. I go to find more information and aid on our journey. he says.

Gathering his items, his list and the Staff of Magius, he concentrates and casts the teleport spell he has just learned, trying to find the Tower of Wayreeth, knowing that it finds him more than anything, and asks Nuitari to guide the spell.

Terevalis casts his spell and feels the rush of power and wind around him similar to when the Gods of Magic pulled him into their presense. In a moment he finds himself in a very large rounded chamber crafted of shaped stone and marble. On the floor is an intricate design embedded into the floor which Terevalis can recognise as a very powerful Teleportation Circle. Teleportation Circles are common in most major Wizard Towers as they prevent mishaps or misalignment from teleportation by providing a stable point to teleport to. They also act as a means of funneling teleporters to a singular location to prevent wizards from outright teleporting where they want in the tower as well as a defense mechanism aginst invaders who might also use a form of teleportation. One would expect that the Tower of Wayreth, if indeed it is where Terevalis is also would have other defenses against such intrusions but fortunately it appears that Terevalis has bypassed them. The room is quite sizeable as well as the teleportation circle. If needs be the circle could teleport an entire wagon's worth of gear if utilized.

Terevalis quickly finds that he is not alone however, Standing in the room is a red robed individual holding a walking stick inlaid with a fine copper tracery that makes up an intricate and incomprehensible arcane map. The man is a human dressed in a red robe with brown hair and a slightly tanned skin tome, perhaps of a Tarson heritage. He has his staff pointed at the ready and a stern expression on his face. He speaks saying,

"You come to the Tower of Wayreth uninvited Traveller. I am Vasko Anovenax The Red, Guardian of Portals for the Tower of Wayreth. Despite you wearing the robes of the black, I do not recognize you, nor do I recall giving you the Cyphers needed to make use of this Teleportation Circle. This means either you have found a way to pierce the defenses of this tower or you have learned the Cyphers some other way. Speak your business but make no sudden moves. With but a word I can send you to a place far less pleasant than here."

The magic washed around him as through his magic, he crossed the many miles and found himself at the Tower of Wayreth.

The Black Robe at first looks around, ignoring the Red Robe. The mythical Tower of Wayreth, first and greatest of the Towers of High Sorcery his normal stoic face cracks for a bit in emotion.

Hearing the Red Robe he replies, Greetings, Pkktro Anovenax, I am Terevalis Unctio of the Black Robes. I am here to see the Master of my Order with news of great import to him. If you would be so kind as to inform him that I have arrived.

Vasko listens to Terevalis and raises an eyebrow saying, "Terevalis is it? There has been word among the mages about a new Black Robe that bears the favor of the Conclave. I suppose that is you. Rather impressive that you arrived on your own power. I believe Highmage Dalamar would be interested to meet with you. Still as my place is here, I will call on one of the Acolytes to act as your guide while you're here."

He incants a message spell and a few minutes later a black robed male human individual with paleish skin. He bows his head respetfully to Vasko and Terevalis.

Vasko says, "Acolyite Nubrinda, please guide Wizard Televalis to the study of Highmage Dalamar."

Nubrinda says, "As you wish Wizard Vasko"

Vasko gestures to Nubrinda and says to Terevalis, "Nubrinda will be your guide while you are here. He will lead you where you need to go."

So assuming that Terevalis follows Nubrinda you're lead through the tower. Its hallways and rooms are vast but the place seems sparcely populated. Before the second cataclysm the Tower of Wayreth used to boast a large population of wizards but when the Tower was sealed in the Age of Mortals it was compleately vacated and only a trickle of wizards now man the tower it appears. Most of the wizards he sees along the way are new recruits, converted sorcerers or elves. As for original wizards from before the Second Cataclysm, there is perhaps a few but as forty years is a long time and a good deal of the old human wizards have either died or retired from service. Still it is refreshing to see that some elves have found sanctuary in the tower from the harships that afflict them out in the wide world. The elves do have some large shoes to fill however as they would have the freshest minds of the pre-cataclysm days. The name the Tower of Wayreth of course is sort of misleading as there is not just one tower but several. Two large towers, the North and South towers, a small center tower known as the Foretower which is the main entrance as well as three other towers on the outer walls. The outer walls build a triangle structure around the main towers. Terevalis can't help to feel a good deal of wonder as he moves through the numerous levels.

Map of the Tower of Wayreth

Eventually you're lead to a black colored door with numberous markings that denote the place as a personal study of one of the Highmasters, more specifically Dalamar. Nubrinda knocks on the door and says, "Highmaster Dalamar. I have brought Wizard Terevalis as requested."

A voice comes through the door sounding like Dalamar, "You may enter." as the door clicks and then opens on its own accord. Nubrinda and Terevalis enter the location, seeing a well stocked wizards study with a number of books shelves, supply shelves and also a few decorations to spruse the place up. Dalamar sits at a large mahogny desk, garbed in his black robe and seems to quickly pen a closing letter on a scroll he was working on at his desk. He looks up and sees Terevalis and nods to him. He then looks to Nubrinda and then says, "That is all Acolyite Nubrinda. You are dismissed."

Nubrinda gives a respectful bow and departs. When he does, Dalamar waves his hand and gestures a spell and the door closes behind him. Dalamar then says,

"It appears Wizard Terevalis that you have learned the spells of the Fifth Circle and traveled here on your own power. As promised I have spoken to my counterparts and they have considered your request to join the Conclave. As for a position, since it appears you are rather adamant on pursuing renegades, we are willing to name you the head of the Renegade Hunters and with it the benefits of the position on the Conclave. Of course you would have show some degree of digression in your pursuits of arcane practitioners. The Orders of High Sorcery do not have the number or the power to bring the Sorcerers to heel and the last thing we want is to fight a magical war in a time when rebuilding our numbers is paramount. It does appear you can be diplomatic Terevalis and that would be a preferable stance for the time being. Your actions in Ak-Khurman to convince a number of Sorcerers to convert to the true art was a noteworthy achievement and in time it may well convince other Legion sorcerers will convert to the true path of High Sorcerery. At the time being our new recruits have mainly come from former Academy Sorcerers or aspiring recruits with some degree of potential talent, so opening up new venues of recruitment only helps the Orders of High Sorcerery. Strengthening the orders is our primary concern at the moment although other events still keep our attention. Is this a position you are willing to accept Wizard Terevalis?"

As he enters the room, Terevalis gives a bow before the Master of the Order. Upon hearing the proposistion made by Dalamar he replies My Lord, you are indeed too kind. As you will note, the only renegades I have killed were Thorn Knights. Their numbers in Darkhaven will take time to regroup. I am prepared to join the Conclave as head of the Renegade Hunters and would like, if possible to know who and to what Order belong the new renegade hunters.

From a pocket, he brings out the list of Toedee's library. I was able to catalog a list of what the hobgoblin has in terms of magical and historical writings. Does the library here have access to histories of Nordamaar and might I have access to the spellbook libraries?

Athola is relieved when her sight has been restored, speaking rather excited, "I can see. I can see. Oh, thank you so much Alathea. Never again I want to suffer being blind."

She enjoys the ride back to Lord Toade to return the remaining eggs being able to see once more. Once they had their audience with Lord Toade, she whispers to Alathea that she will spend time at the guild to enhance her skills. If they need her to join them, she can fetch her.

Dalamar listens to Terevalis's response and says, "Well, one cannot fault your actions with the Knights of the Thorn, they are an intractable enemy and despite your successes in Darkhaven they have many other branches throughout Anasalon. My intelligence has also learned that Theo Drawde, the first Sorcerer of the Knights of the Thorn also still lives and he was the one who originally brought the powers of Sorcery to the rest of the Thorn Knights after the second Cataclysm. If you cross paths with Theo Drawde in your duties, kill him if the opportunity presents itself. As for your position as Head of the Renegade Hunters, the Black Robes will take the leadership role but in order to maintain the balance members of all three orders should be given the opportunity to join, as it was done in the past. As for the who, I suppose some mages can be made available for the training although do not expect more than a handful at this time."

He then takes the list of Toade's books and reads it, "Interesting... Toade appears to have gained quite a collection of rare tomes... and Spellbooks. That is a concern. The last thing we want is a warted Toade dabbling with High Sorcerery. Still, he would be useless as a Wizard of the Orders and I seriously doubt he would subject himself to being "Tested". If it was simple enough to kill him as a renegade, I would exalt at the death of that baffon. Unfortunately I have learned that Toade is Tenacious Soul, he is such a pathetic fool that no God wants his soul, so he is essentially cannot be killed permanently. He apparently resurrected after being eaten and digested in the belly of a dragon as a fond example. There is also concern of the fallout that might happen if Port Balfor learned that the Orders of High Sorcerery were involved in killing their monarch. Sigh... for now, we had best just keep an eye on him and deal with any reprocutions if and when they occur. In regards to the Library, feel free to research what you wish while you are here. The tomes of knowledge are free to any wizard wishing to learn. By the way, tomorrow the Conclave will be having a meeting. During that meeting your new position will be affirmed as well as other issues will be discussed. I would highly suggest you attend."

Alathea smiles at Athola, "Agreed, that was amost unpleasant feeling!"

Alathea will lead Athola to the Guild once more in case there is some trouble along the way and in turn accept an escort that shadows her to Toede's abode.

My time will be spent in item creation.

Alathea gets to work in the labortory of Toade's manor, working with the lost arts of Magic Crafting which to a Cleric involves a ton of prayers and sacrifices of reagents. Fortunately the facilities of the Laboratory are top notch and have everything needed to craft some magical items.

As for Athola she heads to the thieves guild and with her badge is able to get into the back rooms and spends her time practicing and improving on her skills. There are a number of obstacle courses that test her Acrobatics and Trapfinding skills. There are a wide variety of Demonstration locks to test her lock-picking and trap disabling skills. There is also training courses in creating distractions, using proper cover and concealment, sneaking and visualizing one's surroundings. And of course there is a number of Slight of Hand and pick-pocketing trials. In the end Athola being a 9th level rogue does impressively well on these tests. By the time everyone gathers together she will feel her skills have improved and she's learned a trick or two. This will translate into a new trait, preferably one that will grant her a bonus in Acrobatics, Disable Device, Perception, Slight of Hand, bluff, Stealth or Disable Device.

Depends what level of spell you want. It takes 1 hour to study a spell and then it takes a number of hours equal to the spell level to write it into your spellbook. You also have to pay a material cost which is reduced by 25% because you get Tower Resources.

It will take 6 hours of study to add a 5th level spell (1 to read the spell, 5 to scribe it) as well as 187 Steel pieces in materials. This includes the 25% discount for tower resources.

He should have the moolah

Terevalis after being dismissed by Dalamar is lead to one of the many libraries. You've NEVER seen a Libary so large. Shelves upon shelves upon shelves of books packed with repositories of information that dates back as long as the written word was recorded. With the help of a Librarian you're able to find whatever spell you're looking for. Various private studies are available and every reagent you'ed need to scribe or cast spells is available. Of course there is also "Sealed" sections of the Library that have the more dangerous books which probably only available with the approval of the masters.

You also have the Blade of Betrayal on you in case you want to "offload" it here. You also have the Tome of Chemosh still I think that has the ability to commune with the Lord of Bones. Just a few reminders for you Terevalis. Just remembered that you didn't give the Chemosh tome to the Priests of Gilean I don't think.

M Silvanesti Elf Wizard (Necromancer) 6/5 Renegade Hunter Int +2 AC 22, touch 22, flat-footed 10 (+2 Dex) hp 44 (9d6+9) Fort +5, Ref +6, Will +7; +2 vs. enchantments Defensive Abilities resistance; Immune sleep;

How much would I get in trade things for both? I don't think I gave the book over, I don't recall

Terevalis shows the Chemosh tome to the Libarian (Who is a Red Robe just so you know, a good choice considering the librarian has to be without bias to the library materials, considering there is books in spells here that can be very good or very evil). He is human named Thantal Dracart and he appears to be old enough to be a Pre-Second Cataclysm wizard, an old man with a grizzled beard and wrinked face. He looks through the book with interest after a few hours of perusing through the tome he says says,

"Ah, interesting find you have here Terevalis. A tome that can allow the communion with a God and contains some rather intriguing insights into the Chemosh religion. I would be delighted to add this to our collection, although it will probably have to be put in the restricted section considering we wouldn't want some foolish mage trying to call on the Lord of Bones now would we. From what I judge, the magic in the tome itself is worth 1500 steel. The information within is worth say another 500 Steel as it is pre-cataclysm knowledge. So I shall arrange for you to be paid 2000 steel for this tome. Would you like that in Coin, Gems, Diamond Dust or reagents?"

When Terevalis brings up the dagger the Libarian says, "Not my department I am afraid. You'll have to visit the Keeper of Relics, Fionia Estfalas if you're looking to trade in Magical Items."

Once again pulling these names out of random generators as there is no materials which give information on who is the head libarian and relic keeper in the tower so I have to wing it.

Basically you'ed get a voucher where an amount of materials at the tower will be paid for. This can be used for scribing spells but also magical item crafting or for those spell components with a high monetary demand (Such as granite and diamond dust worth 250 gp for Stoneskin)

Ok. He will wait to see what the relic guy says.

Assuming that Terevalis goes and sees Fionia Estfalas at the section where relics are kept. Fionia looks to be an old aged female elf, probably in her 500+ year range of life although like most elves she's aged gracefully. Her hair has gone pure white and her face bears marks of aging, definitely showing around the eyes. Her features though mark her as a Qualenesti Elf. As expected she is wearing the white robes as almost all elves follow the path of Solinai. She seems to be busy writing in tomes and on scrolls, probably cataloging various items for the tower records. When Terevalis arrives she looks up at him and blinks not sure what she's seeing, probably at first mistaking Terevalis as Dalamar before seeing his features and seeing that he is someone else. The woman then speaks,

"Ah, so you must be that wizard Terevalis the one whose name has been buzzing around here of late."

She looks at the staff and then back to Terevalis, "The Staff of Magnus, now that is a sight for sore eyes. You know, I was here you know when Par-Salian the white granted the staff to that young Red Robe named... Raistlin I believe. I had thought the staff lost many centuries ago. It is good I suppose to see that it is returned to the fold. As you might already know, I am Fionia Estfalas of the Order of the White Robes and currently Keeper of Relics for the Tower of Wayreth. It appears both of us have sought sanctuary here within the walls of the tower from the troubles that are out there in the world. Better that I remain here in safety of the tower than be stuck out in the desert with the rest of my kin. I am far too old to be running around the wilderness. When I was offered a prominent position as the Keeper of Relics I readily accepted. But look at me ramble on. If you are here, then you likely have business relating to the trade of Relics. What can I do for you?"

Greetings Vunerable One, I have here a dagger which was used in the Age of Might by a cleric of Quenesti Pah, turned to the worship of the Lord of Bones, to slay a patriarch of the faith of E'li. This dagger is intelligent, is speaks telepathically and has attempted to enthrall me to itself, better I think that it be stored here, away from weak willed individuals. he syas.

Fionia Estfalas says, "I see... this does sound like something we should store away in the vaults under lock and key. Allow me to examine the item so its properties can be properly cataloged. If it indeed has an intelligence, some precautions should be taken to make sure the item does not influence either one of us."

Fionia casts Protection from Evil Communal to shield herself from potential domination. Assuming you give her the dagger she unwraps it and looks on it. She then proceeds to cast a number of spells on the dagger including identify and detect magic. She cringes and says, "My initial assessment appears correct. This dagger has a bound soul within it, a wicked and evil thing that seeks only to take life. The dagger has many abilities and great magical power but will likely drive its wielder to murder on behalf of the Lord of Bones. If it were my say, I would have the relic destroyed, but some of the Black Robes might disagree with me. Instead I propose sealing the dagger away in the vaults until such a time its magic can be appropriated. Is that acceptable to you Wizard Terevalis?"

An item traded for items I could use, Mistress

I doubt I can give you even half the market price of the item. The market price of the Blade of Betrayal is an insane 77,500 stl which comes to 38,750 Crafting/Selling cost. The module I don't think intended for you to actually Sell the Dagger more than get rid of it because its an evil blade that generally drives you to kill Good aligned people. That's way too much money to give to an 9th level party all at once. At best she'll offer 20% of its value simply because its a cursed weapon so 15,500 Steel in cash, gems, trade or reagents.

Fionia says, "As this is a cursed item of such dangerous volatility I am willing to offer you 15,500 Steel worth of Magical Items, Gems or Reagents as payment. I doubt you would get a better offer anywhere else for such a cursed dagger."

The elf smiles and accepts and then prepares for the Conclave meeting.

Is there anything that me might need with that money? Do you think it might be higher to get some people magical armor or weapons?

Fionia Estfalas carefully wraps up the dagger and ties it down. She then takes a solid metal box and seals the dagger inside with a combination of a physical and a wizards lock as well as casting some wards to harden the seal. She then takes the box to place in the vaults, hopefully never to see the light of day again.

Agreed! A +3 weapon is 18K whereas a +2 weapon is 9K. Can we make that an even trade for Jor High God that I don't think is terribly unbalance for a level 9 party especially in a low treasure low magic campaign? Not a huge Steel difference there... Alathea is good on arms and armor.

Yes but something more universally functional would be good for him I think. Whether it is a +1 with a +2 effect or some other mix.

Could we say that I took that sword with me to Wayreth so that would get rid of it and get him something more useful?

I am considering a good sword would be nice but I do lack more of AC part. I am getting hit quite often, although I have huge HP pool. Only problem is mostly weak Magic resistance or somehow need to bring amount of hits against me down. But then, offense is best the defense

Would they let Jor in at the Mage ware shop in flotsom

The mage shop in Flostam is open to anyone for purchases. Its a store after all. It can craft items up to 10th level. Of course the Tower has a much larger selection but only Terevalis can shop there.

Do you want to trade the sword there in flotsam then?

Would I be able to get armor and weapons, non daggers and staves at the Tower of Wayreth?

They have armor and weapons at the tower even though they have no need to use it themselves. Mainly its stuff they've stockpiled or crafted themselves for future trade. A lot is pre-second-cataclysm.

A dragon bane weapon would probably not be a bad choice given we have been encountering dragons and will be going to the dragon graveyard :)

Do we have enough for that? I think it is a 1 bane but I think that they are really rare in DL, at least in the WotL book
