The third portal leads you back into a shadowy corridor, much like from before. As you progress down this path, however, color begins to return to you senses. The corridor opens into a chamber up ahead, light coming from within.

At the opening, you find a large room. It is dry and comfortable, illuminated by a hanging lantern and furnished with carpets, tapestries and cushions. A life-sized statue of an eight-armed female humanoid sits in the lotus position on a platform in the northwest corner. The statue holds a strange string instrument and several sets of hand cymbals.

Near the middle of the room, two women kneel on the floor, facing each other, and as immobile as the statue. One of the women looks mature and elegant, wearing a rich, multi-layered kimono that spreads on the floor, as does her very long hair. The other woman is younger, equally graceful and very beautiful, and is dressed like a geisha.

The third inhabitant is a dark, shadowy cloud hovering near the women. As you enter, the sound like a growl emits from it. A second later, the cloud coalesces into the form of a massive tiger, but with a rabid monkey's head and a venomous serpent for a tail. It emits a screeching roar and leaps to attack.

Kiyomi or Knowlege (arcane) DC 27:
The creature is a nue, a rare magical beast. Some legends suggest that nues are the spirits of children warped into twisted forms to spread paranoia, exhaustion, and fear among former friends and family. According to these stories, such a cursed child wreaks terror upon its friends and relatives until they are all either dead or driven mad by fear. Then, the creature moves on, seeking more challenging kills to sate its vicious hunger. The greatest joy a nue can feel is snuffing the life of a once-strong and proud target that has been brought low by its debilitating attacks.

Kiyomi begin her inspiring song and pierces the nue's hide with an arrow.

Malnival charges in, and the creature snaps at him as he nears.

Despite the beast's bite, Malnival strikes... but his scimitar glances off the nue's thick hide.

Parity lunges in, hitting the monster with a powerful imbued attack. It roars, making your ears ring painfully, and its image shimmers momentarily.

The nue continues to attack Malnival with bites and claws. More startlingly, the nue's shadow breaks rank and attacks of its own volition. The shadow nue is wispy and indistinct, but its attacks harm Heng all the same. Together, they step back, opening space between you but still in range of their attacks.

Heng gasps in pain and fury under the shadow's assault. He feels a twinge of pain from the mystic tattoo upon his head, but there is nothing he can do as the creature of darkness sups on his life force. Battered and grievously injured, he staggers back away from it seeking cover. "Harlan, I fear there is little else I can do against these spirit foes!"
