Surprise Round

Swooping in through the dark, Heng slams the western guard in the chest, taking him completely unawares. The man lets out a shout of surprise, drawing a look from his eastern companion. Parity and Malnival strike a moment later, also coming into view as they attack.

Both bandit guards survive the opening assault, but Kiyomi peppers Heng's target with three arrows, the third of which pierces the man's neck and sends him falling.

The remaining bandit begins to shout in alarm.

Harlan still has an action in the surprise round, if you want to use it. Actions for R1? Heng and Malnival go before the remaining guard.

Heng quickly moves the bodies outside the walls to a hidden spot in the rocks upslope where they are unlikely to be found.

Flying over the wall and back, Heng and Parity move the bodies outside the gate and around the edge of the ridgeline. From their vantage just by the gate, Kiyomi, Harlan and Malnival spy no movement from within the compound. The sounds of night animals and wind through the tree boughs reigns, but you hear occasional horses nickering from the northwest building, and an echo of distant laughter from the north-eastern.

Heng leads the way down to open the stable doors and let the wild rumpus begin. He then finds a perch somewhere above the door where the voices came to observe.

I forgot to give you the description of the inner courtyard... If you refer to the map you can make out the walls and doors of the mentioned buildings.

This natural, dirt-floored courtyard is almost empty, with the exception of a few scattered tools and three large stacks of chopped firewood. An imposing, two-story building with two wings stands to the east. The south wing has a thatched roof while the north wing is more elaborate, with a wooden roof dominated by two tall chimneys. The first chimney is thirty feet tall and overlooks the courtyard; it is crudely shaped to represent a noble warrior. The other chimney is fifty feet tall, its towerlike top jutting out from the rocky cliff above the roof. A large stable and a smaller stone building stand in the northern part of the courtyard, with a doorway carved into the rock between them. In the southeastern corner of the courtyard, a rill of water forms a natural pool, partially buried by a cluster of fallen boulders.

***

It takes a couple minutes to reset everyone's invisibility and get situated inside the fortress. Once Kiyomi summons the swarm of monkeys into the stables, it does not take long before chaos ensues. The monkeys rend and tear through the stables, simultaneously setting free and panicking the score of horses within.

The cacophony of screaming horses and screeching monkeys draws the desired attention. You first hear shouts of alarm, then the high-pitched whistle of a warning arrow fired from an arrow slit high on the western wall. The horses stampede out of the stables, some with riding monkeys, others fleeing with the herd. The horses reach the gates and circle counter-clockwise around the edge of the courtyard.

Ten bandits led by a hunched man with a long greasy queue burst out of the eastern door, ready for combat. As they take in the stampede, the hunched man starts barking orders, telling his men to get the horses under control.

What now? On the map sent, I labeled each of the doors. The bandits are by C and D.

The leader is not here, Parity. Only bandits. Let me quickly check to make sure this is not just a dead end to the barracks. Heng darts in for a look.

Unnoticed and invisible, Heng flies into the open door and takes a quick glance around before returning to inform the group.

Inside, huge logs support the ceiling of this large hall, which is furnished with tanned animal pelts and exotic carpets. Wooden planks line the walls, and several stools and benches are scattered near a stone fireplace in the southwest corner. In the north and the east, two curtains draped between the support pillars partition the room.

By the half-eaten meals and overturned furniture, it seems as though the recent bandit occupants left in a hurry. They left behind seven peasant girls, who now huddle in the middle of the room, nervous and frightened.

Two corridors exit the hall to the north and west, and a wooden stairway in the southeast corner leads to the upper floor.

Dormitory & Storage

You sweep silently into the common room and up the stairs, none barring your way. Upstairs is a large dormitory, containing a score of bunks in ordered rows. Against the north wall is a large cast-iron stove providing small heat to the spacious chamber. A single arrow slot window looks out to the courtyard below (where chaos still reigns).

A single, wide door on the south wall opens to a dry and ventilated storage attic. Bales of hay, spare logs and planks, firewood, boxes of rice and sacks of millet, much of it obvious spoils of their raids, fill the room. Two additional slot windows overlook the courtyard, and a set of stairs descends.

Neither room has any current occupants.

Following Heng, you race back downstairs and out the northern passage. The corridor runs forty feet before opening into another chamber. A row of curtains blocks of the rear portion of this underground chamber, which is furnished as a bedroom with a magnificent tiger pelt rug on the wooden plank floor. A large bed with colorful wool blankets stands near the west wall. A large chest with an ornate wooden saddle resting on the lid sits against the north wall. In the northwest corner, a spherical brazier hangs from a chain fixed to the ceiling. A decorated rice paper folding screen stands against the east wall.

Six bandits are in this room. Five stand waiting in the southern portion while a sixth, who you recognize from Koya's scrying as their leader, takes his scimitar and bow off of a rack. A heavily-tattooed Utare woman sits at the corner of the bed, half-naked.

A couple of the bandits perk to attention as you near the room's entrance. "Gangasum! Something comes from this way!" At the warning, weapons are drawn.

Round 1
AC:24/23, hp:100, Ki 10, Stun 10, Fire 10, dragon style, hasted

Hang flows into dragon stance and moves into the closest bandit (yellow).
