The Taldan peers forward with a frown and tries to spy the noted pressure plates. He looks to the ceiling above it.
Does it look like that wall is a supporting wall? As in, will things go very bad if it tumbles down? If not, he will toss a rock onto one of the plates.

DM Khel |

It's pretty clearly not a load-bearing wall. It's a crumbled, cracked wall that someone clever with his hands has rigged up as a trap. It looks like it would hurt quite a lot to have it fall on you, but it seems that it would only fall on the pressure plate, not beyond it, and that's all it would do.
From where you are, there are many doors and hallways to explore. Where to?

DM Khel |

Not sure what you mean by that description - can you put your token where you want to check? The different doors will take you to different places, as you'd imagine, so I want to know where you're starting.

DM Khel |

Bastion eyes the narrow crack in the wall and decides it is not for him. He heads back through the door he opened earlier and heads down the hall to check the first door across the hall. Forcing open the door, he notes that the air in this small room smells stale. A pile of rocks sits on the dust-covered floor in one corner of the room.
Pausing a moment in the doorway, he notices a single set of tracks have recently disturbed the dust, belonging to a human-sized creature. He also sees that the pile of rocks in the corner of the room looks rather like it was stacked there, as opposed to the more random rubble that he’s seen elsewhere in Ashkurhall.
As he stands in the doorway, he hears the twang of bowstrings, and a pair of crossbow bolts come flying at him from the far end of the hall!

Wayne’s shot ricochets off the ancient stone walls, hitting no one, as Bastion moves his massive shield closer to the source of the crossbow bolts. He can now see a pair of kobolds, positioned behind a rusty portcullis. Behind the kobolds, there is a grotesque dragon face carved in the stone wall. In its gaping maw it has two dozen round holes where its teeth should be.

Blayne will advance to cover behind Bastion and prepare to cast a spell. As soon as possible he will cast Summon Monster 1 to conjure one of Cayden's celestial hounds to attack the kobold archers. He plans to position the hound on the other side of the bars with the kobolds.

"Greetings, denizens of Aroden's inheritance!" the Taldan squawks, emerging from the ruined room into the hallway. "Do you live here?"
He peeks out from behind the wall Bastion has created and speaks some quieter words. Mage armor.

DM Khel |

Blayne – sorry to be particular, but at level 2, your range with the spell is 30’ and the closest spot you could put your hound and have it be past the portcullis is 40’ away. Let me know if you’d like to change your action.
The kobold still visible through the portcullis fires a bolt at Wayne, shooting past Bastion with impressive accuracy! He then reloads in a snap and shoots again, hitting Wayne once more! He cries out, ”Yes we live here! And you die here!” then steps aside for the other crossbow-kobold, who fires and just misses Wayne!

Wayne will drop prone as an immediate action using Gunslinger's dodge so both of those miss.
In a blink of an eye Wayne hits the deck. "I hate havin' to work things out when I'm gettin' shot."
Staying prone and total defensing.

"Cayden bless a fool! " Blayne mutters as he reaches Bastion and realises he can't quite target the spot he wanted to reach. He hunkers down behind his shield on full defence to consider his options.
"If we advance can you reach them with your gandasa? " he asks Bastion.

DM Khel |

With a truly irritating laugh, the green-scaled kobold shouts back, "We've got a shooting gallery, seems like fine circumstances to me!"

DM Khel |

"Sure, throw down that big shield of yours, for starters!" the kobold calls back. He's silent for a moment, then both of them can be heard quietly laughing and Bastion thinks he hears the other voice say quietly "Throw down the shield, that's rich!"

![]() |

Instrument hastily thinks back to that book he read on kobolds a year back. What was it called? Runts of the Clutch, or something?
Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 What do I know of kobold culture?
"Perhaps if we defeat them in battle, they will be more easily swayed," he invokes.

DM Khel |

The Instrument knows enough of kobolds to understand that these two have little reason to fear him and his allies at this point, as they're protected behind a portcullis and able to shoot freely down the hall. Presenting a more immediate threat to them would, in all likelihood, change their perspective a bit.

![]() |

"Get closer, at least! No need to shout then." the Taldan prods Bastion. Unwilling to wait for the half-orc, Instrument strides boldy forward.
"Aroden does not smile on you! Well, I suppose that's obvious. You're kobolds! Weak imitations, really." He prattles on.
-2 to attack rolls for 7 rounds. DC 15 Will to reduce to 1 round.

DM Khel |

Will: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Will, +5 due to being attacked by Blayne's allies: 1d20 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 1 + 5 = 22

Torriki to finish the round! I know he's busy at a con this weekend, but I'll give him a bit in case he's free to post.

DM Khel |

Torriki moves up to join the others, ready to get into the fight if they can get past the portcullis. The kobolds, seeing the massive shield out of the way for a moment, step back and loose a volley of bolts at Bastion! They snarl in frustration as the portcullis interferes with their shots, causing a couple of them to just barely miss the shield-bearer.
Calling the portcullis partial cover from their ranged attacks, seem reasonable?

DM Khel |

I may have spoken too soon about not bothering with door checks - I was mostly thinking of it in terms of opening doors when there was lots of time, rather than in combat rounds. So, having said that, please give me a Strength check to open the door, Wayne.

DM Khel |

You cannot reach them with your short-poled sticker, Bastion. As seen on the map, they stepped away from the portcullis, so you'd need a reach weapon.

DM Khel |

With a satisfying crunch, followed by the squeeeeal of rusty hinges, Bastion grabs hold of the door handle and wrenches it open!
Looking into the room beyond, Wayne can see that it is empty, but the north and south walls both have large cracks in them, leading to other rooms. To the north, he can see a room with a large pile of rubble on the north end. Through the southern crack, he sees what looks like the end of the hallway where the kobolds are!
The cracks are fairly small. A Medium creature must use a move action and succeed at a DC 15 Escape Artist check to pass through a crack.

Oops, got ninja'd by Instrument and didn't realize.
It's only a move action to open a door, so Bastion has a standard or a move left this round if he wants to do anything more. He only needs to 5-foot step to make enough room for Instrument - I'll let him decide if he wants to move out of the way for some cooked kobold or keep his position.
Blayne, Torriki - any actions from you?

Green Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Red Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Bastion obligingly steps aside so that the instrument can cast his spell through the portcullis. The green-scaled kobold does not see the Instrument’s searing fire coming, as his attention is focused on the guy who just shot him. Alas, his inattention is his undoing, and he drops to the ground, badly burned! The reddish kobold is both more attentive and more nimble, and he ducks under the flames, avoiding much of their effect.
Torriki takes a try at opening the door he’s standing next to, and to everyone’s astonishment, he forces it open!

Str: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Blayne steps through the open door and sees that the room is more or less bare, except for a door on the south wall and large cracks on the north and south walls. He moves to the door and wrenches it open and is able to see the red-scaled kobold and a set of double doors at the end of the hall.
Everyone except Torriki is able to see that the floor of the kobolds’ hallway includes a 20-foot-long series of pressure plates in front of the carven dragon’s head, though the pressure plates are clearly in very poor repair, and unlikely to work without some help.
