The flour-dusted Aspis agent snarls in rage as his spell is rendered momentarily useless, but his snarl is cut short by Bastion's charge! His eyes widen in disbelief as the paladin's gandasa cuts him, and the leader of the Aspis mission slumps to the floor!

Combat over! Nicely done, that could have gone quite differently. More post later.

Naktok comes forward cautiously, perplexity in his eyes as he studies the fallen Aspis agent. Zaril makes for a strange sight indeed – most of his body invisible, his midsection dusted a ghostly pallor, the white on his chest stained a brilliant red where Bastion’s blade took him, and the blood flowing there beginning to thicken the flour into a macabre paste. ”He was a mighty foe, yet you bested him,” the kobold leader offers. ”I am glad we did not fight you. And I believe our god is glad of it as well.” The Golden Guardian stands silently, watching and listening, though one gets the sense that he concurs with the blind kobold leader’s assessment of the Pathfinders’ prowess.

”You say you came to find one of your own,” Naktok continues, ”and we want that corridor cleared. Working together, we might get both things done. What do you say?”

"I... I think we can manage that." The fox looks about at his teammates, especially Blayne. "Everyone okay?"

The kitsune relaxes a bit, "Let's get to work. I'm eager for the city."

”Okay, then,” Naktok says, ”come with me.” He leads the way out of the temple, moving confidently despite his blindness, until he bumps into a large sack lying on the floor of the hallway. One of the other kobolds kneels down beside it and says, ”This has some of your stuff in it, Naktok. They must have checked the other rooms before they found us in the temple.” Carefully removing the contents of the bag, the kobold sets them on the floor and tells Naktok what is there. The bag contains a number of small jars, three of which have a crude drawing of a lizard’s head on their labels and appear to contain some sort of rusty red gel. The last thing to come out of the bag is a beautifully crafted longsword, with the Glyph of the Open Road stamped onto its hilt, and the initials N.S. engraved on the crossguard.

Naktok explains the red gel, saying, ”That’s made from Stinkeye’s blood, taken from him a little bit at a time. Maybe you know, but fresh basilisk blood can turn someone who has been turned to stone back into flesh. We figured out how to make it last longer, so you don’t have to use fresh blood. I’ll sell you some, if you like.”

"How much?" the Taldan asks absentmindedly. His face suddenly lights up.

"There!" Instrument points rather rudely at the sword. "That's Sharrowsmith's! How did you get it?"

"I'm certain the Society would be interested in such a treatment", Bastion adds in agreement.

Seeing the sword, the big half-orc frowns. "I fear the worst has happened."

Naktok smiles in Blayne’s direction and replies, ”Stinkeye is fine, the little dear. And the basilisk ointment is also dear, as it’s not easy to make – six hundred pieces of gold, it’ll cost you. But since none of you were turned to stone, perhaps you don’t need it.”

The kobold’s smile fades as Bastion and the Instrument react to the sword. ”Obviously, I had not seen it, and my followers likely didn’t notice anything special about it. If the blade belongs to the one you seek, you may take it. Come, let us see what the fallen stone hides.”

Working together, the kobolds and the Pathfinders manage to clear the collapsed corridor of rubble. After several hours of work, they come upon a body. It is badly damaged and unlikely to be recognizable by even the man’s closest friends, but it is identifiable by the crushed wayfinder that lies next to the corpse’s mangled hand. Sadly, the wayfinder is engraved, like the sword, with the initials of Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith.

When Naktok realizes what has been found, he gestures to the other kobolds to step back, allowing the Pathfinders to collect the body and its possessions in peace. After the remains are cleared away, the kobolds return to work, and clear the rest of the rubble from the corridor, opening the way to their lodging area, their sacred burial space, and other parts of their home that they have been unable to access.

As this work is completed, Naktok addresses the party, ”You have what you came for, and we have much work to do yet to restore our home to what it was. Take what you will of him, and go, please. Our worlds have collided enough.”

Realizing there is little else for them to do here, the Pathfinders collect Sharrowsmith’s body and belongings and begin the journey back to Nantambu, where Aya Allahe is there to receive them. She listens as they recount their mission, and when she learns of Sharrowsmith’s death, she nods sadly and voices her thanks.

“Nantambu will not be the same without my friend Nieford Sharrowsmith. When he was younger, he traveled to all corners of the Mwangi Expanse and truly made the region his home, despite having been born hundreds of miles away in Avistan. He never truly lost his adventuring spirit, and as this lodge grew, he found his hours dedicated more and more to paperwork and less and less to exploring the lands’ rich history. I know his soul would take no offense at my saying he died as he would have wished—active, engaged, and in the field. I take solace in being able to provide him proper funerary rites.”

“With his passing, Sharrowsmith’s Exports has no venture-captain, but I have corresponded with Nieford’s colleague, Ambrus Valsin, and agreed to act as the temporary manager of the lodge. After all, the full extent of the Pathfinders’ involvement in Nantambu has remained something of an open secret, and it would be an embarrassment for anyone but a friend or family member to take command of the business so soon after the owner’s death.”

“I greatly appreciate what you have done for the Society, for your venture-captain, and for me.”

Allahe also examines the metal component the Pathfinders revealed when they opened the Krihirik talisman. After a moment’s study, she quickly stands, recovers a piece of stationery bearing five graphite illustrations, and slowly smiles. “This is remarkable,” she announces. “The shape of the talisman matches one of the drawings Ambrus Valsin sent me. What you have found is a piece of the Sky Key, the device even now the rest of the Society is at its wits’ end attempting to reassemble!” Then, with quiet affection, she murmurs to the Sky Key component, “Congratulations, Nieford. You and your agents have once again done what the rest of the Society could not—a fitting tribute, and a fine legacy.”

That’s it, gang! I’ll get chronicles out soon. The basilisk gel appears on the chronicle, so you don’t have to buy it now, unless you want to use it right away.

"Indeed! May your rebuilding be swift. Carry Aroden in your hearts!" Instrument thus bids the kobolds adieu. Days later, he says the exact same thing to Allahe and his companions, adding, "May he smile on all your future endeavors! I go now to compile my notes for him... and, er, the Society. Yes. That."

Thanks Khel for a stellar adventure, as usual! Thanks to everyone for a stellar adventure, actually, this was a great time.
