A place for grave discussions.

Hey everyone. First, thanks for the invite!

Second, I have actually RUN this, though I've never played it. I'm pretty solid with not letting it affect my play. I understand that some people are newish to the game. I'm happy standing back a bit.

Third, I've got a couple of character options:

Zosimos: a terse elven investigator. Useless in combat, and a master of intrigue and research

Mordenaar: a laconic slayer, keen on direct resolution of most problems.

(They're both fun for me to play, so I'll choose the one that fits the best into what people play.)

| DM | Absalom Initiation

Hey all - thought we'd start with a little character planning and setup.

Characters so far:

Drizz'n - half-drow poser gloom chymist 6
Dirch - necromancer accountant - what level?
Zirt - gnome prankster bard 6
Topo - playing a pregen ninja 7

Chris M (aka Dungeon Master S) - glad you'll be joining us! Glad you got the character discussion started. And do you have anyone you'd like to invite to join us? If not, I've got a potential person in mind.

Dirch - can you put your character in the profile of your alias, like Drizz'n?

Topo - do you have any registered PFS characters? It looks like you don't - maybe Chuck or Doug can help you register one here on the Paizo site, so you'll have a character with a PFS number that I can give the chronicle sheet to. (If I'm using a bunch of terms that don't make sense to you, please let me know!) Also, you'll need to put your character in your profile. Fortunately, some hard-working folks have typed up all the pregens in the right format for that. You can go here, and just copy and paste that document into your profile and it'll come out looking all neat and tidy - but first you'll need to create an alias for the pregen you'll be using. If you need help with any of those steps, just ask.

Given the make up thus far, I'll go with Mordenaar (who needs to have his profile updated.)

I don't have anyone ready to invite at the moment, so by all means go with your person.

As you all converse about what abilities you all have best suited for this mission, the quiet discussion is disrupted by a bewildering site. Barging into the room throwing the door open, testing the limits of the door frame, stumbling forward is a Half-Orc who is a strange sight indeed. His beard short, well kept and braided with dwarven beads and baubles weaved into it, a batter iron holy Symbol hangs from his neck its upside down Warhammer glints in the light. Opening his mouth where one might expect a guttural half-Orcish accent your ears are surprised to here a deep dwarven dialect "Oi Sawry 'bout tha. Thought it would'a been a'lot heave'ar." closing the door gingerly he approaches the table.

"Gotta summons from a man by the name o' Khel... O' Was'it Cale... Kale... Well thats vexin ain't it. Summons aside I be here ta offer me services. Wheatha it be me arm, me Linguistic expartese or me Brew I be ya man."

Thank you for the invite Chris R. I would love to play along side this rag tag bunch of miscreants :) I need to level him up, and decided if I want to bite the bullet and drop the Prestige on a Class retraining, but this is the character that I have within range of the table. Just freshly made level 6 this month gotta love GM XP! I am at the cross roads of swapping the Cleric levels to Warpriest levels as play style wise he is more inclined to be a Warpriest than a Cleric. When do you plan on startn ya think?

Also glad to see the BB Code Pregens we worked on is being mentioned and used out there. :)

| DM | Absalom Initiation

Howdy Ebonwolf, glad you could join us! And glad you're level 6 also, so everyone will be in tier, I believe. Oladon is planning to level up Zirt this weekend, so we won't officially get going until Monday, though I may get a starting conversational post up before then.

As for the pregens, yes, I was sending Dirch the link to the blank pregen template and I noticed, quite coincidentally, that you had created it. Thanks for your work making PbP easier for folks!

Monday sounds good to me.

I did not create all of the Pregen BBcodes but I did help coordinating their creation along with converting a few myself. Anything I can do to help out smoother player both new and veteran to play.

A couple of general things for this game:

I tend to run a fairly fast game with regular posting, and I'm hoping everyone else is able to do the same. At a minimum, I'd like one post a day, and more is great. I find it keeps the story much more engaging when there aren't long delays. If someone hasn't posted in 24 hours or so and the rest of us are waiting on them, I will generally bot them or put them in delay, unless it's a really critical moment or something. If you're going to be unable to post for a few days, please try to give advance notice of that here.

Speaking of which, from March 10 to 25, I will be out of the country on a combination of work and personal travel, and my posting will be very limited during some or all of that time. I hope to keep this game going then, though it will likely slow down, and I may put it on hiatus for the latter part of the trip, March 17-25.

In an Effort to help keep with the flow. I will more than likely have very limited posting capabilities for March 18th-24th as well. Its Starfinder Society Week at my Local Store and we will be running a game every day that week. 1-00 through 1-05 with the 1-1 Quest sprinkled in their too.

Also I am running, for the First Time ever!, a Convention the last weekend of April the 27th-29th. I figure we may not go that long but just in case.

I can keep to the 1 post per day minimum and contribute more as time allows.

I am the local VA for my area covering two stores and a host of other home games when needed so there are times I may be absent due to those duties. I will do my best to keep with the flow as a player.

Drizz'n tells me that the link I provided him to the PbP character template wasn't working for him, so I'll try again. Does this link work? It should take you straight to the file. If it doesn't, let's try a link to the folder, where you should be able to grab the file called 'PFS Character Template.'

Without giving too much away, I thought this summary of season 8 might be useful to our newer players.

SEASON 8: YEAR OF THE STOLEN STORM:

During a daring venture onto a passing asteroid, the Pathfinder Society recovered the legendary Untouchable Opal. The Opal has served as the prison for the demigod Ranginori, the good-aligned elemental lord of air, for millennia. This acquisition inspired the Pathfinder Society to research a means to crack open the artifact and set Ranginori free.

The Society soon learned that destroying the Opal would require powerful samples of earth, fire, and water that were pure enough to evoke the element's fundamental nature, and agents traveled to the elemental planes in search of allies and leads on where they could find such samples.

During their extraplanar journey, the Society came into conflict with the Concordance of Elements, an organization devoted to balance among the four elements.

You probably already have a feel for this. In general*, including out of character text in a gameplay post is used for clarifying or requesting further information with regard to a specific action or post, whereas posting in the discussion thread (also called "in OOC") is for more general questions, comments, information, or discussion.

*:
The use of the two threads does vary between groups and games. I've been in a game where the DM insisted that ANY out of character content was to be posted in the discussion thread, but that's definitely an exception... and I only mention it to illustrate that there aren't really hard and fast rules, just guidelines and group preferences. :)

One way to find out answers like this is to look in the Pathfinder Reference Document, aka the PRD. It's located at the top of the list of links, on the left side on every page on this website, so it's always easy to find, whether you want to answer a specific question (like looking up a skill description) or get a more general understanding of how a particular area of the rules works. To be clear, I'm not saying 'You have a question, go look it up' - just want you to know there's a useful reference available. Having said that, we have a bunch of seasoned Pathfinder players and GM's here, and any of us would be happy to answer questions such as this one.

If you click on that link above, and then click on Core Rulebook, it'll expand those rules. Click on Skill Descriptions, then Knowledge, and you'll get to the page I would check to answer your question. First, I know that the creature type of a xorn is outsider, from the monster information I have as DM. (You could look that up in the PRD also, but players aren't really supposed to be looking at the monster info.) I would look in the description of the Knowledge skill to see what sort of Knowledge applies to outsiders, and see that it's Knowledge (planes). Unfortunately, your ninja is not trained in that skill, so would not likely be able to ask such a particular question about a xorn. You could ask someone else in the party if they know, and they could make a Knowledge check - and if they rolled high enough, I could tell them something about the xorn's senses that might give you an idea of that.

You could also ask me if I thought it would be practical to try to sneak up on them using that ability, and I'd tell you that you might be able to move very quietly indeed, but that these are creatures with three large eyes, that allow them to see in all directions at once, so you would need to hidden from sight in some way as well as very quiet to get close.

Forgive me if this is overly basic, but I was trying to show you how to nagivate the PRD as well as answer your question.

No worries, and no need to apologize. That's an upside and a downside of PbP - you can post when you only have a little time, but sometimes you don't even have that. We'll be here.

I concur with Zirt completely. She and I have played a lot of PbP together and see it very similarly. I use OOC if it's a little aside or a quick question, or if there's some rules info like the effects of heavy gravity, that are easier to have in the gameplay thread (and I'll often put that kind of thing behind a spoiler, so the thread isn't cluttered with blue text). If it's a longer discussion (like how to tackle a complex problem in an adventure) or really non-gameplay related (such as a player letting me know that she'll be on a round-the-world cruise on a sailing ship with no internet and won't be posting for a year), then it should go in the discussion thread.

And - there isn't a wrong way to do it, so don't worry about it.

Dirch - a couple of things missing from your character sheet that I’d like to have on there: your spells and your equipment. It’s helpful when you describe an action if I can look at your sheet to be sure I understand it - for example, when you used the trumpet to talk to the dead merchant, I didn’t know what the source of that ability was, and that can effect how I play it.

Very much this. In PbP, especially when there's a puzzle or some sort of mystery to untangle, it's helpful to read each post carefully to understand what's going on. I'll try to craft the posts as clearly as possible, but feel free to ask for clarification.

On a related note, and this is especially true for the folks new to PbP, it's a really good idea to read each of the posts since your last one, from the GM and fellow players, for a couple of reasons. First, it helps to tell which challenges have already been addressed - if there's a skill check to identify a whatsit, and someone has already made that check and explained the nature of the whatsit, folks who post afterwards really don't need to make that check. Second, it allows for a lot more role-play - if I read something that someone has said and it catches my fancy, I can reply to it, or I can read that another character is doing something that I also have some skill at and I can attempt to help them, or do it myself and give them a superior smirk when I succeed, or just comment that I've noticed they're working on it and move on to something else.

I don't mean to suggest that anyone should respond to every little bit of every post, but it's fun and useful to respond to some of them. Sometimes, especially if there are a lot of new posts or active RP, I'll jot down a few items to include in my next post, based on what I've read, and then flesh out the post from there. I find it makes everyone feel like their posts are being read, and just builds on itself in terms of RP.

I hope this doesn't come across as a lecture or anything, I just mean to share ideas on how to make PbP lots of fun, and I hope others will share their ideas.

And this is where I would like to ask did we Defeat an outsider that has the evil subtype or an undead creature whose Challenge Rating is CR6 or more?

or Did the Surrender of Pamari count for Accept the surrender of an enemy combatant (other than an evil outsider or undead creature), and ensure his fair treatment until he can safely be released?

| DM | Absalom Initiation

The first one is a definite no, in spite of the various outsiders you fought. The second one is trickier - you accepted Pamari's surrender (and she's neither an evil outsider nor an undead creature), but you didn't have any real need to ensure her fair treatment and she was released pretty much instantly once you met up again with Grave Treader. So I'm inclined to say no to the second one also, though I'd listen to any arguments to the contrary. It does seem like a very specific set of criteria to check that second box.

Alright I guess I will just have to mark off Possess a number of ranks in one of the following skills equal to your character level (minimum 4): Diplomacy, Heal, Knowledge (religion), or Sense Motive.

I have 6 ranks

That I can happily confirm as an appropriate box to check.

And i will bet they have some silver or golden filigree with them too. I bet they make the best melody.

Listening to the rendition of a song he cannot quite remember the name to Ebonwolf enjoys the melody Zirt puts forth. He smiles all the while passing around a jug of the goo' stuffs to all those in attendance.

Would you say the adventure is one of these?

Convince an NPC to work as a Pathfinder Society contact, or convince a disaffected agent to work with the Society again.
This requires a successful Diplomacy or Knowledge (local) check with a DC equal to 15 + your character level.

Dirch fills out 1049 forms for everyone's treasure.

It qualifies as that, too bad you missed the check.

I still need PFS info from Dirch and Rikimaru.

Dirch do you have a Re-Roll? And GM stars?

I think that was actually his day job roll. Job Check (accounting)

Also, Drizz'n is stoked that someone is willing to fill out his 1049 form for him!(Whatever that is...) Because no one has ever looked cool filling out paperwork.
