DM Deevor's River Into Darkness pbp (Inactive)

Game Master Deevor

Sovereign Court

A crew is needed to help transport and protect a cargo for Captain Trueheart and his sloop the Green Serpent. The ship is bound for Bloodcove, where they will pick up the cargo. He's let you know that he has enemies in Bloodcove, hence his need for protection for the cargo and himself. He will pay handsomely for a group of seafaring adventurers to supplement his crew. Will you join him?

Captain Trueheart, has need of 4 extra crew.
The crew will be 4th level characters, but Capt. doesn't like Summoners, who need not apply. Applications may be made here until the end of 24th October. Applicants should have details of what they do, what their backgrounds are and why they want to join the crew, their hopes and aspirations. The ship is expected to sail on the 1st November.

This is not a full campaign, just a trek into the wilderness of the Mwangi Expanse.

Sovereign Court

Estimated running time?

Hmmm. A sea based game? I've yet to be in one that was as successful as hoped, but with some of the options in the APG, I could see it being more successful this time around.

I think I might submit a Sea Singer (Bard Archetype) for this, provided I can come up with a good concept.

In case I do:

Dice Rolls:

4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 5) = 18 => 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 4) = 16 => 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 5) = 15 => 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 6) = 21 => 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3, 4) = 17 => 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 5) = 16 => 14

It probably only 1 levels worth, maybe 10 or so encounters....

Maybe 6-12 months

Talomyr wrote:

This isn't a sea based game, but does involve river travel.

It's a wilderness adventure, but I don't want to put you off.

Dark Archive

Sounds interesting. I understand that the ship is sailing to Bloodcove, but where does it start its voyage from?

To be fair, it won't matter, but Let's say Coretyn.

Dark Archive

Here is my submission.

Jon Former (Cleric of Cayden Cailean)

Jon grew up near the sea in Sargava. His father was a fisherman and Jon loved sailing with him. He accompanied his father at a young age on long trips out to sea.

His family is Chelish in origin. They are not fond of Cheliax due to the enemies attempts to conquor them in the past. They think even less, however, of the inhabitants
of the Shackles. Jon remembered a few run ins with the pirates while on his father's ship. His father was a proud man, but was smart enough to sail hard and fast as
soon as a Shackle's pirate was spotted on the sea.

Jon grew up around sailors and marines, so he is skilled with many sorts of weapons. He was drawn to Cayden Cailean when he came of age. His father was also one
to drink more than most on their trip, so perhaps that influenced Jon's love of drink as well. He jumped at the chance to accompany Captain Trueheart on his mission
to Bloodcove. Jon will do all he can to keep those pirates, and anyone else, at bay.

Dark Archive

Dice rolls (if selected):

1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + (5) + (1) + (1) = 11 -> 10
1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + (1) + (3) + (1) = 11 -> 10
1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + (1) + (5) + (6) = 14 -> 13
1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (4) + (3) + (3) = 11 -> 10
1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + (5) + (4) + (4) = 17 -> 13
1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (2) + (1) + (1) = 7 -> 6

Wow...any chance for a reroll? :) I think that adds up to about a 10 point buy.

Edit: Actually, I think it is a 1 point buy (if a 6 equals -5).

Hmmm... Well, I could certainly be tempted to submit a Fighter (Two-handed Fighter Archetype) for this - the basic design that I would be going for would be a younger son from a 'noble' family in Corentyn, who needs to leave town for a while, and has decided to have a bit of fun visiting the 'colonies'.

I will stat him up shortly:

4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 1) = 15 -> 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 6) = 13 -> 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 6) = 15 -> 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 5, 3) = 19 -> 16
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 5) = 18 -> 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 1) = 11 -> 10

Interested, will try to post a character idea later tonight.

Probably going to make an sorc/wiz... Maybe I'll give witch a try? Anyway, rolling for something to work with...

Good luck me!

4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 3) = 15 }12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 5) = 14 }12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 2) = 9 }8

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 3) = 11 }9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 6) = 13 }12

...Well could be worse...

Yep, reroll the dice have been unkind...or take a 15 point buy.

You may take this reroll of 1 stat below, or do it yourself and drop one of the stats above.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 5) = 16 -> 14

Sovereign Court

OK, hopefully by allowing 7x4d6, you will all be able to have decent stats...so anyone wanting to join and create a new character, please use this as a means to create the ability scores.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 6) = 17

MoFiddy here.

Ok....Let's give this another shot. :)

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 3) = 13 -> 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 4) = 17 -> 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 3) = 10 -> 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 3) = 13 -> 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 3) = 19 -> 16
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6, 1) = 16 -> 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 1) = 14 -> 13

If the guy who was considering a Wizard/Sorcerer decides not to bother, I may do so instead; probably an Elf Wizard bonded to a staff, seeking out books and knowledge in other lands - the job is simply free transport to somewhere he was planning to go anyway.

If this is acceptable, then the rolls are as follows:

4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 5) = 16 -> 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 6) = 18 -> 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3, 2) = 15 -> 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 3) = 13 -> 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 2) = 15 -> 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 6) = 19 -> 18
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 5) = 15 -> 14

Wow; I didn't expect them to be that good...

I shall take your kind offer! I Am leaning heavily towards witch, I will try to have a concept up before 3pm, but if not it will probably be late tonight.

Extra Roll to make 7 sets of 4d6

4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 1) = 10 => 9

Looks like that the drop set anyway.

OK tossing up how this might work...

Possibly remaking Heavy Harry from that last submission you had going :)

4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 3) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5, 6) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 2) = 13

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 6) = 17

17/15/14/12/11/10 - nice

..."Now, friend, will I be making my point, or will you be making your payment?"

..."Uhuh, I get it, you ain't got the gold, but Innkeeper Davern ain't got no patience neither, so this ain't gonna be a good day fer ya"

..."Hold still! hold still! if you keep wriggling like that I might get BOTH kneecaps!"

..."so then he says to me, 'I'd like to see you try Orcmeat'; anyhow, once I pulled him back out of the river..."

'Heavy Harry', a Half Orc Rogue(Thug). A cigar chomping,Crossbow slinging, debt collecting scallywag with a 'sort of rustic charm'... that sees him do well with the fairer sex.

He isn't a bad man, in fact most people find him very reasonable and with a clear cut sense of fair play, however he was recently declared, by the whole crew of the visiting warship 'Dauntless' as "the most intimidating brute they'd ever met" (meaning they met him after declaring they couldn't pay their sundry debts to the local innkeepers).

Stats in profile.
Haven't done equipment yet, will detail out if we go ahead :)

OK Leylyn the Witch's background is done, it is in the 2nd to bottom spoiler. Hopefully it is not too long...

I will be adding more info on the familiar, and double checking things tomorrow. Unless I have time, I will probably wait to buy stuff and roll hp until after I know if I'm in or not if that is not a problem. Hopefully I make it, this character seems fun...

--jlord

Alright, I have finished putting together Charles' crunch, and I have crafted a background that I am happy with, so I will officially submit Charles Beecroft (Human Fighter 4) for consideration :-)

Sovereign Court

More for my benefit than anything, but the current applicants are:
Mofiddly playing Jon Former a cleric
Shifty playing Heavy Harry half-orc rogue
Luke playing Charles Beecroft fighter
Jlord playing Leylyn an elven witch

And maybe applying
Talomyr considering putting in a Sea Bard....
Chris Parker considering an elf wizard....

Sovereign Court

If no-one shows any further interest between now and Friday night, then the group has selected itself. I am beginning to look at the characters already, so have been looking at Harry and Charles's stats.

Game OOC Thread in readiness.

Sounds good. I'll update this alias today or tomorrow.

I updated my profile with my characters stats and gear.

Hey Deevor,

I'm starting to put together the Sea Singer, and I should have her done sometime this evening.

Just the very quick basics for you for now. 4th Lvl Human Bard (Sea Singer Archetype) named Lysandra Eventide. I'll have more in the profile later.

Nearly done with the Wizard also. Also, are we rolling for HP, or using averages? If the former, then, 3d6 + 10 ⇒ (1, 5, 2) + 10 = 18.

Walks toward Captain Trueheart and snaps to attention.

"Lysandra Eventide reporting for duty, Cap'n."

Sovereign Court

Captain Trueblood, with only 4 vacancies must disappoint some hardy adventurers, who saw fit to respond to his call. He needs some muscle and Heavy Harry and Charles Beecroft fit that bill, not only that, it seems they have a reason to get out of here quite quick. A ship always needs a medic, especially one that can fight, another vacancy is taken by Jon Former. For once the captain is undecided, but having two loverly ladies to keep him jolly during the trip would make any captain happy. An female elven child who should have good knowledge of the Mwangi Expanse is always useful to have around, just in case, and she'll be cheap to employ. A good looking red-head, feisty and pretty, just what a cap'n wants in his ..... crew...So Captain Truelove offers both Lysandra and Leylyn the opportunity to travel with him to Bloodcove.

The Captain looks at Galinndan and tells him that he cannot take anymore crew, despite his obvious qualities.

Sorry Galinndan but I just can't up the party to 6, so you will be the first reserve if anyone drops out.

So what exactly is the good captain's name? Trueheart, Trueblood, Truelove? You've called him all three. ;)

Sounds good. Thanks for running this game.

When do we get started?

Sovereign Court

Talomyr wrote:

So much for devices to get the party together...before the main story thread...Trueheart I try and stick with that one...

As for starting, I want to check the characters out. So I'll probably start with you all getting to know one another, before the adventure starts proper. Hopefully I'll get you going in the next 4 days.

Hmmm... With all of these aliases, perhaps our illustrious Captain has something to hide ;-)

That's fine; I'll keep an eye on the thread just in case.

Of course he has something to hide, he has 'true' in his name which makes him immediately suspect. :p

Sovereign Court

You are all such trusting souls....

Well, Debt-collectors and minor Chelish nobles are known for it ;-)

Sovereign Court

The start is getting closer....to adventure
