Zimu I do t think anyone is saying do t try diplomacy. But I think we are all saying at the first sign the jig is up we are burning the tree to the ground

Cуровую зиму |

Ok. Cool.
Guys, I am hoping the treant does not have Sense Motive or Zone of Truth, but can you guys please make some aid roles to Bluff just in case, Cуровую has made some good rolls 30/31.
It looked like the party was getting ready to jump the guardian out of boredom.

Ulp |

no, but i think you get one shot at it, if the tree doesn't go for it the first time around then it is bombs away. also i suggest you see what max said, and perhaps retcon your lie, but that is up to you.

Cуровую зиму |

In gameplay I made an immediate compromise, some 'adventurer' types may have been gathered to join the holy group as extra muscle for fear of the the great evil, they are however under the guidance of the holy mission.
This way you guys can make some aid roles to Bluff just in case.

Jax Naismith |

Random question, but, would it have gotten less of a bonus if we had gone with the simpler lie?
Jax has the spell Bladed Dash prepared. I've seen so many interpretations of this spell online that its not even funny. Could he take his move action to move forward a few feet and then cast it, moving 30' at a diagonal to end adjacent to the tree?
The way I've always pictured it is like a magical burst of speed that throws you in any direction, even straight up. Of course, you have to deal with the problem of falling immediately after, but that seemed to be a much more useful spell as a level 2 slot. It has the unique use of being very useful against situations exactly like this..when you are almost in range, but not quite, and what is in the way is the angle of a cliff.

Cуровую зиму |

Good point.
But to be fair I was worried it would shut down any adventures in fears of it would disturb the protections in the tower.
And if we got even 2 aids, which we could well accomplish then we could have beaten the treant's Sense Motive.

He'd be more likely to believe you, but then it would be much less likely (as in, probably impossible) that he'd let you pass. Adventurers are exactly the sorts of people he'd want to keep out.

Douglas Muir 406 |
Also, while it's a cool idea, I can see why it's generating some fuss on the forums. It's very underdescribed! What if your dash takes you through difficult terrain? An existing Grease or Entangle spell? Over water? Over a chasm? Through a trapped area? Through something that does damage, like a Wall of Fire?
In any event, you can't use a 30' surge of movement to zip up a 40' high cliff -- even moving straight up, you'd end up 10' below him. So, not relevant in this particular case.

I have to sleep for an hour, then go to school, but I think I am only behind reading by 4 posts.
DM I rolled a Knowledge Nature 22, a Perception 28, and an Initiative 14.
I'll be back by 4 pm EST.
My Big Worry
If a Druid or Dryad or something else is watching then the whole forest will know we are evil. If we leave we can make preparations we can look like another group and be more prepared.
We will need to walk back to Farholde after we survive the tower.

Ulp |

Invis is minutes per level we prob don't need extend

Ulp |

Ok so it looks like retreat and buff.
Let's all post what we want to do so we can deal with this thing and not spend 3 days debating

Ulp |

Let's just burn it. Avoiding it just means we have to deal with it later. Between fire elementals and ulp and zimu we can burn it

Jax Naismith |

Cimu and Judge voted for retreating for the moment. Ulp votes for fighting, Jax is..sort of leaning that way. Edmin and Dren are the tie breakers.
Of a random note:
Grumblejack. Where is he now?

Jax Naismith |

Jax was sitting around Farholde for ten days. Can this conversation (among a few others) have happened at some point? Since its all NPC's, the rest is all up to GM fiat, if you're okay with this.
Old, scarred wood separates two old acquaintances lounging on plush, if worn, chairs. The table is scattered with papers, coins, ink, two empty wine bottles and a third decanting beside them. The human tilts his broad-brimmed hat and scratches at his eyepatch.
"I can see the scrolls..and the items. But you want me to do what now?"
"Zoren." The tiefling leans forward, eyes slightly glazed from the drink. "This isn't that difficult of a concept. We may work for Asmodeus, but others do too and I do not trust them. They are called the Eigth and these.."
Jax taps at a handful of papers. "Are their detailed descriptions, personalities and everything else we know of them. This is dangerous information I'm trusting you with friend. You do not even know all of those I work with.."
"Yeah..about that--" The gambling wizard starts talking, frowning and leaning forward only to get interrupted by his compatriot.
"Not important. Not now. Focus on the task at hand, please. You know this will be a useful venture for both of us. Have you not already been sated in gold?" Jax indicates the pile of gold coins he'd given to Zoren on top of the money for crafting earlier.
One manicured claw taps another pile of papers, the notes that Jax had brought with him detailing his plans. Of course, they would burn those before he left, but for now they were useful indicators. "I want you to send a spy on them. Or rather, have someone else do the deed. When you meet with them..don't go as yourself."
With an exasperated sigh, Zoren leans back in the chair and pours himself another glass of wine. Taking a long drink he looks at Jax over the rim. "This is a lot like work. I'm not much of a fan of work."
"But you are a fan of money. And you may be lazy, but you aren't stupid. We both know that this will lead to a very long, very glamorous lifestyle if we succeed. Succeeding is the hard part. Plus, you know, its kinda fun." Jax grins, flashing his fangs.
The human laughs out loud, shaking his head and shrugging. "F++!. You have me there, Jax. Conspiracies are far more interesting..and I've always been the type to gamble on excitement. Fine..I'll find some of the Baron's children to look around for them, find out where they are. Then I'll hire some poor sod in Drownington. I'll use Disguise Self when I meet with him."
"And alter your voice, if you can find someone selling that spell in town. Or have it already. Alter self may work better too."
"..Right, I'll do that too..and that spell doesn't last long enough, you should know these things. Finally, just go find any spells you want me to have and send them to me."
"...Right, fine, Zoren. Lazy bastard. I suppose I can help a tad. Oh, speaking of helping..I can help locate them. Send one of the children to follow me next time I meet with Trik. He's a pleasant enough fellow and I like him. We'll have a few drinks and, hopefully, the child won't be noticed. If he does get caught..well he won't know your face. In fact, send a child to follow me as well, just for kicks."
The two continue to drink wine well into the night, discussing, among business, art and Jax's recent adventures.
Jax would also love to find one of these.
Scroll of Vocal Alteration (playing it off as something that's great for putting on a play!) 1d100 ⇒ 72

Zoren Cladius |

There's a link to it under Jax's Feats spoiler right beside Leadership, but here it is as well!
I want his cohort to have more personality than a craft-monkey and figure the best way to do that is to conspire with him!

Douglas Muir 406 |
I like it!
Do understand, though, that this is a higher-risk, higher-gain strategy than just keeping him as a craft monkey. More interesting, sure.
Tell me how much money you're giving him? (And don't forget to mark off the 25 gp to get into the 7th Knot's hotel room.) He'll blow it gambling, of course -- but we can roll for the unlikely chance that he might hit it rich.

Dren of the Dark Tapestry |

So is this fellow with us right now? Was he vetted by the group? It's a pretty signinficant thing to do without talking it over with us. Arn't you worried that Dren might sacrifice the newcomer?

Ulp |

i think Jax left him in town

Ulp |

Is any one else excited to see Ulp in action?

Jax Naismith |

Also, Cymu is the only one who would have met Zoren (or been told about him) so far. Ulp might be next on that list to help with alchemical creations.
Jax gave him 200 gold to play with, and I have forgotten that and will mark it off now.

DM
I was wondering for awhile now, is Elise from the adventure or your creation. I was wondering, if Cуровую was not part of the Ninth, would said character still be hostile to the Knot. And if she is your creation, who did she replace from the adventure, if any.

Cуровую зиму |

Could this be Baron Arkov Vandermir or are you thinking someone younger looking?
That guy is supposed to be a Bond Villain but I don't know whom.

Douglas Muir 406 |
Working with another Knot is always going to be fraught -- coopetition, frenemies. You're mostly Lawful and all on the same team, but you're also all evil and ambitious.
I see the Baron as a bit more foxy-faced, but YMMV.

Cуровую зиму |

Would this character be a little closer?
(Slight mix and match because that's how I picture the Judge)

Douglas Muir 406 |
BTW, this might be a good time to pause and review possessions. A common problem in continuing campaigns -- both tabletop and PBP -- is that you can easily pick up some obscure scroll or item, jot it down on your charsheet, and then completely forget about it. So, when faced with a tough puzzle, it's never a bad idea to take 30 seconds to quickly review your sheet and see if you've forgotten anything.

Douglas Muir 406 |
...oh, dear. I just looked at everyone's character sheets. Please ignore the broad hint in the previous post.
You may recall that back during the fall of Balentyne, you had to deal with the annoying Hermit. When he died, everyone was all "oh oh gotta search his body!" What you finally found was this:
An inter-party squabble over the Hermit's stuff is avoided by the fact that he didn't have a lot of stuff -- he was, after all, a hermit. He never had much gear, and he sold or gave away most of it when he retired. He was wearing a magic robe that, upon close examination, turns out to be a Druid's Vestment -- nice enough, but useless to any of you. He had two scrolls that he had kept around, just in case -- Antiplant Shell and Kiss of the First World. Those are druid and druid/bard, respectively, so you'll need a UMD check to cast them.
That Antiplant Shell scroll would have been incredibly useful just now. Unfortunately, none of you marked it down on your character sheet. I'm interpreting that to mean that in the heat of battle, you left it, and never did get back to collect it. Both scrolls were subsequently used by goblins for kindling.

Dren of the Dark Tapestry |

The only thing I didn't add was my Rod of Extend I had made, can I assume I didn't forget an item I had crafted for me for this adventure?
Other than that I added everything as it was created or I bought it. Yeah adding something like that wouldn't really be proper.

Dren of the Dark Tapestry |

If you crafted it and spent the money, that's different -- as long as you've marked the money off your charsheet.
I did, my current cash is after spending the 3000gp on it.

Ulp |

We sold the scrolls and Druid things
And for the record leaving it alive is a huge mistake I think
I think we let ulp attack from off the cliff w my ac near 30, it's range can't be that good and use fire elementals then No one is at much risk

Dren of the Dark Tapestry |

I wouldn't assume it is a normal treant and I wouldn't assume it doesn't have allies nearby. We should attack as you said but in full force with the entire party just in case a flying dragon shows up and roasts some of us where we are flying around.

Xenfal |

There are a few items that were never sold I will list then and someone can put hen on their sheet

Xenfal |

1 Cure Disease
1 Potion of Slow Poison
1 Scroll of CLW
1 Scroll of Enhance Water
1 Potion of Jump
1 Potion of Spider Climb
2 clw
1 cmw
2 sponges of water breathibg

Wait a minute. I thought we sold those. On my notes in my notebook I think we sold those items.
