DM Carbide |

I'll get something up.

DM Carbide |

Current map HERE. You're currently in the Swamp Witch hex.

The Fitcher |

Thanks, DM C! That really helps.
Plan A - Explore hex NW of our present location. This hex is directly west from the fort, and I think clearing the hexes adjacent to the fort would be a good idea.
Plan B - Having just attained a new level, go back and kill the tendriculos and claim the mushrooms for the witch.

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

I'm good with Plan A. We made the witch not hostile, at least, so I don't see a need to rush to get her mushrooms.

DM Carbide |

The party prepares to head northwest. That evening, unfortunately, you don't quite make it out of the swamp, and as a result you don't sleep that well. At least the weather is reasonable.
DC 12 Fort save or fatigued the next day.
Miscellaneous roll W: 1d100 ⇒ 42
Miscellaneous roll A: 1d100 ⇒ 12

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Vasily sleeps badly and wakes tired and cranky the next day. "Let's get out of this damn swamp and into some decent land."

DM Carbide |

Not that it helps in this case, Vasily, but it looks like your FORT save is +5 and not +4.

Bea |

Despite the uncomfortable surroundings, Beatrix falls into a deep sleep, for the first time since coming to the Stolen Lands her dreams surprisingly free of any of the past horrors that haunted her. The image of a stag gazing at her from the distance lingers in her mind as she greets the new day with a feeling of confidence and purpose.
fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Katya Volkv |

Fortitude: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Katya tosses and turns restlessly for the entire night, her body dripping a cold sweat as she wakes up the next morning, her hair a disheveled mess and her eyes half-closed with exhaustion, "Agreed... some place its actually possible to get a good nights sleep would be nice."

DM Carbide |

With half the party having trouble keeping from yawning, you head into uncharted territory. It's a fine stretch of forest, and mapping is proceeding apace when everyone except Katya hears something moving off the path.
What do you do?
Bea Perception check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Vasily Perception check (+2 if involving humans, +2 in forest terrain): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Katya Perception check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
The Fitcher Perception check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

DM Carbide |

With your Perception bonus in forests, it sounds to you like a human accompanied by something else (about Strelka's size) trying to be quiet.

Bea |

Bea pulls the reins to stop her horse, holds up a hand, and slides as quietly as she can from her horse. Despite her attempts, she lands on the ground with a symphony of clangs and rings from her armor. She tries to hold still, standing at the ready, her hand on her sword as her eyes dart back and forth, wondering if anyone heard that.
ride: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
stealth: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 Ha! A 1. Thanks, dicebot.
Vasily hops down off Sev's back as well, not as quietly as he might have liked. He walks over next to Bea to whisper his observations. "Sounds like one man with something big with him, a cat or maybe a wolf. Let me and Strelka circle around and see if we can find out anything."

The Fitcher |

stealth 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 well that completes the stealth trifecta
The Fitcher dismounts as well, following the lead of the others. He takes just a few slinking steps off the path.
Activate Hunter's Senses (Ex): You gain the ability to augment your senses on command. Standard action, gain scent special ability and darkvision out to a range of 30 feet.
What does my nose know? - perception 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

DM Carbide |

Fitcher, the wind shifts and you can smell a human and a large feline--probably a puma.
The noise made by the party draws a cry from the direction of the movement. An old man's voice calls out, "What's that? Who's there?"

DM Carbide |

An old man, accompanied by a grizzled-looking puma, slowly picks his way through the foliage. "Hello, Beatrix. What brings you and your friends to this fine wilderness?"

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Vasily looks over the man and his cat, trying to remember if he has heard anything about woodsmen with pet pumas.
Perception to notice anything weird or interesting about the guy, Kn: Local to see if he's heard anything about him.
Perception, includes racial and terrain bonus: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35
Know: Local: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

DM Carbide |

Vasily, you've not heard anything about him. He's pretty old, definitely human, wearing stained but well-made leather armor, and carrying a whip and shortsword (neither out at the moment).

Katya Volkv |

Katya stays near her horse after dismounting, put off by the condition of the old man initially she doesn't speak, choosing instead to listen carefully.

DM Carbide |

The man nods at Bea. "Oh, I know a lot about what's around. Or at least I used to...don't remember things so good any more. 'Least the forest still talks to me."

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Vasily nods and smiles at the old man. "I'm always happy to meet another woodsman who knows how to make friends." He puts out a hand to shake with the stranger. "Vasily. Pleased to meet you. Strelka is around here somewhere. I'm sure your buddy there has smelled her already."

DM Carbide |

The old man takes Vasily's hand tentatively and releases it quickly. "Ah, that's why Cat was so tense. Yes, let's eat something and talk."

The Fitcher |

The Fitcher helps to clear a small camp and build a fire, though he isn't much for cooking. He chats of man-eating plant monsters and witches with creepy scarecrows, hoping to draw the man into conversation about areas of interest and what we might run into hereabouts.
looks for nuts and berries, etc 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Vasily works with the Fitcher to clear a spot and start a fire. He, being the civilized sort of young man he is, has a coffee pot and coffee in one of Strelka's saddlebags and starts some coffee going. The young man doesn't mention anything they'd run into, but does talk about the plant and animal life of the region, hoping to get more information out of a man who clearly lived his life out in the wild.

DM Carbide |

The man has a tendency to talk to things that aren't there, or perhaps he's addressing his cat. He also talks about things as they have been, once referring to the Stag Lord as a newcomer to the area.
The next post will probably be kind of involved, and I'm going to be out of town for part of the weekend. We're getting my daughter settled in her new place. Internet won't be installed until Monday, probably, so I'll be largely out of contact.

DM Carbide |

Here's the MAP.
Vasily and The Fitcher are working around the fire while Bea chats with the old man. He grows quiet, looking off past the paladin and nodding slightly as she talks. Suddenly and without warning he draws his shortsword and stabs her for 13 HP. At a curt gesture the cat moves around Bea, preparing to attack her next round.
That was the surprise round.
Round 1:

Fitcher Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Shortsword surprise attack on Bea: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Shortsword damage: 1d6 + 3d6 ⇒ (1) + (6, 1, 5) = 13
And this is my 20,000th post to the boards! I hit 19,000 in late June, less than four months ago...guess I do a lot of PbP.

Katya Volkv |

Katya jumps up in surprise at the suddenly violent actions of the Old Man, her hands jumping up with a spell coming to her lips immediately, her reaction honed from months spent in dangerous lands.
"Kax dout laraek!"
Casting Grease on the Old Man's shortsword, DC 16 Reflex save or it is dropped.

DM Carbide |

Round 1 (ongoing; rearranged):
Initiative order
Old man-acted
The Fitcher
Bea
Vasily
Katya
The hermit cackles as he snatches his hand out of the way of the spell. "Have to be quicker than that to catch old--old--me!" He stabs Bea again, and his cat attempts to savage the paladin. Bea's armor saves her from the bite and one claw, but the other claw draws blood. Total 13 HP. A really pathetic set of damage rolls, not that you're complaining.
Party up!
Flanking shortsword to Bea: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 = 22
Shortsword damage: 1d6 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + (2, 1, 1) = 9
Flanking cat bite to Bea: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 2 = 19
Flanking cat claw to Bea: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 = 17
Flanking cat claw to Bea: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 2 = 27
Claw damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Strelka leaps out of the brush to jump on the old man's back as he faces down Bea and the Fitcher, while Vasily starts pumping arrows out at the man. "What are you doing!?"
Rapid Shot 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
Arrow 1: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Rapid Shot 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

Strelka Claw 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Damage 2: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

The Fitcher |

The Fitcher rolls from his position at the campfire, letting out a surprised growling sound from deep in his throat. He darts a few steps, then strikes at the old man.
acrobatics to avoid attack of opportunity - move north into flank with Bea 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
+1 Cold Iron Sickle 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14includes flanking bonus - add +2 for Canny Tumble if acrobatics roll was successful
damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 2) + 2 = 9

DM Carbide |

The old man manages to dodge The Fitcher's blow, but the two arrows and the cat's claws all hit.

Bea |

Completely taken by surprise, Bea recoils at the sudden action and pain. Drawing her greatsword, she stands and swings back at the old man.
The rules are unfortunately completely silent as to what happens when you stand from sitting, instead of prone. I'm treating it as a move action that doesn't provoke, but if you feel like I need an AoO, go ahead and give it.
Swift actioin: Activate Smite Evil
power attack+smite+flank: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 2 + 2 = 32
damage: 2d6 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (6, 1) + 11 + 5 = 23

DM Carbide |

The old man misses Bea as she stands and strikes. An expression of vast surprise on his face, the old man expires.
Round 2 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Cat-acted
The Fitcher
Bea
Vasily
Katya
As the old man collapses, the cat continues to attack Bea. Its claws fail to find purchase on her armor, but its fangs find a weak spot. Take another 7 HP, Bea.
Party is up!
Claw to Bea: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Bite to Bea: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Bite damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Flanking AoO on Bea: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 2 = 18

Vasily Lyesnayevich |

Vasily stows his bow and takes a treat out of his pouch, trying to look and sound as unthreatening to the big cat as possible. "Hey, big guy, calm down. Shhhh... Don't follow your buddy into the big sleep."
His Handle Animal is better than his Wild Empathy, but I'll try both, trying to get big kitty to calm down. I fully expect him to get mauled.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 Huh, not bad. Maybe he won't get eaten by a cougar.
Wild Empathy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Ha. That's more like it, dicebot! I hate you, too.

DM Carbide |

Vasily, as an experienced animal handler you recognize that the old man has trained the cat as a killer. He could have gotten it to back down, but you had only a tiny chance of managing it. And now you've gotten its attention. With a snarl that echoes across the clearing, it leaps at you.
Katya, you have a chance to act before this happens; Bea, you'll get an AoO on the cat as it charges through your threatened area. If the cat is still up after that, Vasily, you were ready for the attack so you managed to get mostly out of its way; take 5 HP from a flailing rear claw.
Pouncing claw: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14
Pouncing claw: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 2 = 15
