Zamanda |
Zamanda pulls out some blunt arrows in case the minotaur skeletons start to move.
Is that a door behind us? Are we staying to fight or going inside?
Kalem Darkborn |
Hit: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (4) + 30 = 34
Damage: 2d4 + 35 ⇒ (2, 4) + 35 = 41
Fire Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3
Seeing the ghostly woman up above, Kalem let the power within him out. Demonic wings formed on his back and he quickly took flight, his scythe striking the crystal cupola that she was behind. He figured that if she was going to use cover to defend herself then he would just smash his way through!
GM Rutseg |
Kalem strike on the crystal shatters a large section of the cupola leaving a clean entry for weapons and magic!
The creature behind responds uttering a blood freezing wail that stops the hearts of everyone 40 feet around her.
I think only Kalem, Bashiel, Ilsa and Cinnabar are within the area of effect.
Fort DC 23 or take 140 damage (this is a death and sonic effect). If you succeed you are sickened 1d6 ⇒ 6 rounds.
The elven woman seems incorporeal and keeps emitting her loud wail which is probably heard as far as the barbacain.

Zamanda: invisibility 3 min, protection from evil 13 min
Round 1: Kalem, Elven woman, Bashiel, Invisible creatures, Malen, Zamanda, Minotaurs, Ilsa
Bashiel, Malen and Zamanda can act!
Ilsa Dreambind |
Ilsa's heart stops completely at the insistent wail. As she begins to fall, her mind screams NO!, and wills her heart to start beating again.
fort (burst of adrenaline): 1d20 + 10 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 8 = 25 I'll use Burst of Adrenaline as immediate action (likely always will for Fort saves, which are my lowest). Wow--failing that would put me at -15, 1 hp from instant death by RNG.
Zamanda |
Who is rolling for Cinnabar? (Please don't die, please don't die...)
The situation is looking like exactly what she wanted to avoid, and the loud noise is super annoying, so Zamanda casts Silence on a copper piece and moves closer to the rest of the group and the door, in case that is their way out.
I put the area effect of silence centered on me, because I am carrying the copper piece.
Bashiel Eland |
Save vs. death? What a way to start things off! We do have the Infused Soul boon from the previous book in case anyone fails this.
Fort vs. wail: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29
Bashiel buckles under the unearthly wail, his heart hammering a mile a minute thanks to the elven woman's screams. He takes a firmer stance and calls out "Lingering spirit, Osiris will grant you the rest you cra-" He's cut off as Zamanda comes close, though he hopes his intention is clear enough.
He calls on the magic within his armor, willing it to grant him flight (Flight Mastery for 13 mins of 40ft fly speed). He glides up toward the wailing ghost, closing to melee range with her, and draws his rapier as he goes. He settles on the roof if that leaves him in range to strike her, or floats next to her otherwise.
As a reminder: Bashiel now always has the mesmerist trick "Mesmeric Mirror" implanted, with the trigger being that he's attacked.

Bashiel makes his equipment carry him flying and positions himself up ready to strike at the wailing creature.
You spot the two invisible creatures in the tower behind the one you are fighting, one taller than this one, move towards you, one flies over through the west and casts a spell while the other starts flying around closing by with you through the east, probably unaware you see them.
A 20 ft high wall made of ice materializes at the roof in front of the cupola, splitting the party.
Cyan line in the map
Zamanda casts silence effectively protecting herself from the wail in her approach.
Zamanda does not require to roll because she entered the wailing area within silence
Malen does something heroic!

Kalem stood firm against the howl of the ghostly elven woman, and met with his own roar. His flaming scythe lashed out, once, twice, three times, each one promising naught but ruin.
Ilsa Dreambind |
Ilsa prepares some defenses, having barely withstood the nightmarish scream.

Malen Arturian |
Taken aback by the shrill and powerful nature of the banshee's wail but just outside the deadly effects of it, Malen called upon Pharasma's power to create a shield for himself and his allies against the deadly effect. He then scooted towards Zamanda to capture all of the ground-level people inside the area.
Create Ward Against Death (30' radius), then move.

Seeing Cinnabar succumb to the banshee's wail, but the woman surprisingly still drawing breath, Malen reached inside to the more powerful divine gifts Pharasma granted to him. Though he himself had not wanted to bring the 'former' assassin along, the group had decided to do so and she was an ally, however unwilling she might be. Stepping around her and finding the outside of the silent area, he grasped his holy symbol tightly and spoke a few powerful holy words before touching her shoulder, infusing her with awesome healing energy.
Cast Heal on Cinnabar, recovers 130 hp

Inspired by Bashiel's presence, Kalem surmounts the terrific touch.
Malen touches Cinnabar, and though a bit confused by the event, the woman recovers consciousness.
With the banshee dead, I am going to assume Malen drops the ward against undead to avoid consuming more rounds
Infused by the power of spirits, Bashiel finds the core wrath of the incorporeal elf and stabs at it with his rapier. His ancestors get out of the rapier and envelope the banshee quickly consuming it and making it disappear forever.
Zamanda takes a shot appearing as she does, and stabs the arrow deep on one of the minotaur skulls.

Even being able to see invisible creatures, Kalem was still blindsided by the creature's attack. So much so that his first attack was in the wrong direction! Something far more common than one would think while flying. But that was quickly fixed, as the tiefling turned his flaming scythe towards the foe.

Ilsa watches the battle unfold, and is relieved to see Cinnabar moving.

The fire of the scythe deals no damage, and the weapon does not seem to recognize this as undead.
Now with see invisibility Ilsa is able to see the creatures K. planes to id while Cinnabar starts to fly around the ice wall.
Bashiel expertly maneuvers in the air keeping balance to strike twice with his attacks. He finds out though these are not undead despite the bony appearance, and his rapier deals less damage than expected.
Zamanda's arrows flies over the air and strike all true, although she finds out the minotaur skeletons are immune to cold, and deal less damage as the piercing nature of the arrows make most of them pass in between the bones.
When the last arrow strikes on the skeleton skull, the minotaur collapses into a pile of bones.

Ilsa, Kalem and Malen to go!

Staring up at the combat above, Ilsa focuses her attention on the minotaur battling Bashiel. Cyan

Malen Arturian |
Dropping Ward Against Death is an affirmative
Malen hissed in pain as the bolt entered his neck, the man reaching up to grasp the missile reflexively. The moment of lapsed concentration cost him, as two more projectiles found their way past his defenses and into his person. Calling upon his Goddess, he divinely healed a decent amount of the damage away, the newly knit flesh pushing the offending missiles out of his body.
Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (2, 4) + 10 = 1624 hp cured
Feeling that these foes weren't particularly dangerous, Malen stayed out in front as a more attractive target to keep bolts from flying at the ladies, though he did try to do a better job of avoiding them.

Managing to stay in the air, Kalem renewed his attack against the creature before him. It wasn't undead, but regardless, that didn't mean that it wouldn't soon be dead. Managing to stay aloft, his scythe lashed out three times, each one hitting with devastating force.
GM Rutseg |
Malen heals most of his wounds.
Ilsa looks through the ice wall and finds out the creature escapes her command.
The creature is made of bones but not a minotaur skeleton and not undead despite its appearance. K. planes to identify.
Malen observes attentively the minotaurs trying to avoid their bolts.
Kalem flaps his wings holding in the air enough time to crush down the invisible bones creature with a couple of scythe swings. The scythe leaves crackling sparks of electricity as he swings it.
The invisible bones creature steps back, away from Bashiel reach and disappears even for those able to see invisibility.

Zamanda does the same with the one that shots at her.
The four armed gargoyle that Malen spot before becomes clearly for everyone as it jumps in the air descending over the party. She is not alone, other ones you thought to be just statues start to move in the minarets of the nearby pinnacles and jump flying over towards you.
The lead one reaches Malen and thrusts at him with her horns.
Horn: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
But thanks to his shield of faith and defensive stance, he manages to deflect the attack.
Two other ones descend from the western minaret, flying closer to Zamanda, but not reaching her enough to attack her.
The rest fall from the northeastern minarets, and all descend over Cinnabar, two of them even reach her with their claws.

Bashiel Eland |
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Bashiel looks quickly around, unsure if the skeletal creature had teleported simply for tactical reasons, or to flee. When he doesn't spot it anywhere, he reassesses the battlefield. Weighing the numbers, he gambles that Kalem and Cinnabar could handle their four flying foes and instead heads toward Zamanda.
He takes a slow arc around the ice wall and ends up just above and to the north of the white gargoyle. (Not sure what elevation the white gargoyle is at or the height difference between the floors, but unless there's more than 10ft down he needs to go, he can do that in one move action of 40ft fly speed) He brandishes his rapier and delivers a quick stab in an attempt to delay the gargoyle's attack.

Seeing Kalem swoop down and start tearing into the gargoyles, the priest noted the relatively high amount of damage the bloodrager had taken. With himself and Zamanda having also taken wounds, Malen decided to take a step back and channel Pharasma's healing energy to patch up himself and his allies, making sure none of the Lady's divine blessing reached his enemies.

Zamanda's first arrow shatters the skull of the skeletal minotaur in a dozen pieces, the undead falling to the ground motionless. She redirects her two other arrows to the green gargoyle in front, the undead bane doing nothing against it, but the cold hurting this time as both arrows strike.
The gargoyle in front is unable to use an attack of opportunity on Ilsa because fortunately Kalem took it before. The woman barely manages to touch the gargoyle due to the recent wail sickening, delivering an electrical slap on the creature that shakes on spams.
Fort DC ?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
But manages to quickly overcome it.
Left alone in the upper floor, Cinnabar fights valiantly, landing on the roof and then stabbing twice at the leading gargoyle, although not critically.
Raising Pharasma's symbol in the air, Malen channels the goddess energy, quickly healing the wounds of his friends while negating the pulse of life to the four closest gargoyles.
The eastern minotaurs shot at Kalem, as they cannot see Malen now around the stones. With the tiefling's cover and good defenses they look only for a lucky shot.

In danger of being completely overwhelmed, Cinnabar withdraws from her position, flying around the wall of ice to find a position next to Bashiel. Withdraw action, may get a couple AoO, but she'll otherwise get wasted alone up there. She has 60' movement while flying, so she can get around the wall just fine.

Inspire Courage
+2 to saving throws against charm and fear effects (morale) and +2 on attack and weapon damage rolls (competence).
Discordant Voice
Whenever you are using bardic performance to create a spell-like or supernatural effect, allies within 30 feet of you deal an extra 1d6 points of sonic damage with successful weapon attacks. This damage stacks with other energy damage a weapon might deal. Projectile weapons bestow this extra damage on their ammunition, but the extra damage is dealt only if the projectile hits a target within 30 feet of you.
(Dismissing Silence is a standard action, but beginning the Bardic Performance is only a move action.)

It was perhaps not clear you have no line of effect. My fault. I have added heights to all the flying gargoyles. The heights are all in reference to your balcony height level. I have also superposed the roof over your level. I think it is perhaps more clear this way.

Thanks for the clarification on positioning. It was indeed difficult to tell what I could/couldn't see on the upper part of the tower.
Having wounded one of the gargoyles, Ilsa steps forward and tries to finish it off with her sap.
+1 Sap (painful stare, nonlethal): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 211d6 + 4 + 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 + (4, 1) + 4 = 15

Malen Arturian |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Malen sneered at the gargoyle's words, even as the creature made short work of his defenses and scored several hits on the priest. This beast must not have understood how deep his connection with his Goddess was. After Kalem made mincemeat of the enemy, the cleric noticed the damaged Cinnabar and Bashiel had made their way down to the group. Malen moved in between the two groups of combatants and then channeled Pharasma's healing energy again, able to capture all of his allies and exclude the gargoyles.
Channel (heal): 9d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 2, 2, 1, 2, 6, 1) = 28
GM Rutseg |
Finding the pink gargoyle already down, Ilsa moves to the edge of the balcony and strikes at the gargoyle flying next to Kalem once. Her stare causes an extra pain on the being.
As Malen raises his holy symbol the party fully recovers from the fortress welcoming.
The remaining skeleton minotaurs shot at Ilsa from the southeastern battlements.

Yellow vs Ilsa mwk light crossbow: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 202d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 Pop image AC = 20
But both bolts bite only on Ilsa's images.
The gargoyles continue their assault, profiting her fly to attack from higher ground.
The first one goes for Kalem.

Only one of them pieces through the mighty natural hide enhanced by magic of the tiefling.
Meanwhile the purple gargoyle double moves to engage Malen "You cleric will repent bringing the awful presence of Pharasma to Scarwall Fortress!"
The central door of the balcony suddenly opens. A couple of human sized creatures are behind, attracted by the sounds of combat to finish their centuries boredom, they quickly join the fight. From the tip of their lashing tails to the serrated features of its fang-filled visage, these fiery-eyed sentinels bristle with barbs.
"Some humans souls to feed at least!" screams the green one and points to Zamanda casting a scorching ray.

Both rays strike on the aasimar's back that burns for an instant due to the incredibly heat flames.
"Nihil should be informed of this brother" the other one laughs maniacally and points to Malen casting hold person on him.

Ilsa Dreambind |
Fighting shoulder to shoulder with Kalem, Ilsa continues to pummel the gargoyle she had last struck.
Cinnabar tries to finish off the enemy next to Bashiel, her sawtooth sabres doing what wreckage they have done so many times in the past.

Zamanda |
Hurt, and feeling surrounded and trapped, without a way to get out of the line of fire, Zamanda continues to sing, looking externally brave as always, but internally she sort of wishes she would have teleported past the main door instead. This battle with multiple enemies was turning very bad, and if she got hit like that again she would be dead.
As much as all the creatures really need killing, she decides that she is going to have to act defensively again, and she steps away, casting
Song of Healing.
Grants three people affected by my current bardic performance fast healing 2 as long as that performance lasts. Choosing Cinnabar, Malen, and myself. Not sure how much it will help, but ending the performance on this heals from paralyzed, so a chance to help Malen (eventually) if he doesn't make the save.

Kalem didn't slow down, despite being bitten and slashed. He was in his element. His flaming scythe continued to hack away, a smile on the tiefling's face showing how much he enjoyed the situation they were in.
Bashiel Eland |
Fly to 5-ft fly: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
With foes seemingly coming out of the woodwork, Bashiel grips his rapier more firmly and floats very carefully toward the ground (If I've tracked my distances right, this 5-ft fly to the east and down leaves Bashiel on the ground). He raises his rapier, clicks his heels together (haste 1rd from boots) and enters an aggressive stance to deliver a hail of stabs against the white gargoyle.
