Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Wightscale nods

"The New Market. Ironshot Road is nearby. You have a line on who's been nicking my neighbors?"

"Could be. The area fits. When did you start missing neighbors?"

-greep-

Greep idly traces a shape on the table while he sips the liqueur. A shape that could be a claw or talon, finishing by slashing across it with a jagged line.

Wightscale looks at Greep.

"First it came to me attention was bout three months ago. Yah gotta ken, there aint no list of folks what keep kip in Sliss. Most of the kips are underground in the Catacombs, yeh ken? "

Wightscale tosses his shot back and motions for the Sherekak to refill him

"I knows a cutter name of Grekkar Longtooth what disappeared three months ago. He owed me a couple of Ladies. I asked around to see if he had given me the laugh, but his clutch mates said he'd just up and vanished one day. The jink wasn't enough to go scarper, so I did a bit o' diggin' to see if there were some other basher he was in debt to."

Wightscale grins, revealing a set of pointy fangs.

"I don't like folks what poach my streets. Anyway, to make it short, far as I could tell no one was poachin' on me streets, but there were kobolds what shouldn't turning up gone."

Wightscale leans towards Greep, his pink eyes hardening.

"If yeh gots a name fer me, I would be very happy."

"If yeh gots a name fer me, I would be very happy."

"All I've got is a guess." -greep- "Say, do you keep track of the folks down the way? I heard of a riot there the other morning."

Wightscale looks at Greep

"Yeah, it was big news hereabouts. The Gobbos don't usually riot in broad Peaklight, but someone put their local's publican in the dead book and it piked them off somethin' horrible. Rumor is some Clueless adventurers thought it would be fun to roust 'em."

Wightscale stares at the small Robbit.

"Why're yeh bringing this up? Yeh saying the Gobbos have summat to do with me neighbors turning up missing?"

neuter Robbit (variant halfling with reptilian appearence) Rogue2 / Wizard (transmuter) 1

"I'm not saying anything for certain." -greep- "But there's a goblin tribe in that area that's rather more organized than the common run of Gobbos. And they're importing salt. My inquiries have said very pure salt from the Plane. But they haven't been showing the effects of mining."

-grreep-

"It was one of their warriors I overheard talking about Scaly slaves doing the work." -greep- "Whether there's any connection to your missing neighbors is something I don't know. The coincidence does make me concerned."

neuter Robbit (variant halfling with reptilian appearence) Rogue2 / Wizard (transmuter) 1

"The tribe is called the Broken Claw."

-grreep-

I can't believe I couldn't remember the tribe's name and had to look it up in an old post. My mind must be going. Perhaps it's a Chelish plot.

"Have you heard of anything strange about them?"

-greep-

Ahh I wouldn't worry 'bout it Greepster, I do that Sh*t alla time.

Wightscale ponders

"I knows a bit about a bit, perhaps. It would make kinda sense, what with kobolds being thought the miners berks make us out ta be. Gobbos are just the lazy cowards to nick folks off the streets too. Broken Claw too, hmm, heard they was movers and shakers. Hmm."

Wightscale leans back, steepling his stubby clawed fingers.

"I also heard they're havin' a little famliy quarrel over there right now. You happen to know how I can gets to their salt mine from here?"

"I have a firm idea of the first portal and its key." -greep- "I was thinking of taking a look, but there's quite a few of the Claw tribe in the area. And the only thing I know about the other side is its in the mountains of the Outlands."

-greep-

"I also know it's good to have friends when you go investigating." -greep- "Have you heard of the Broken Claw having any friends in particular? They've done pretty well for themselves for a group without local backing."

Wightscale grins again

"Gobbos are to paranoid to work with anyone but themselves. Even then they haves problems with the notion of teamwork."

Wightscale scratches his chin.

"If I'm getting the proper dark of things yeh wants to join forces to take on the gobbos? What's yer angle in alla this?"

Wightscale narrows his pink eyes again.

"I'm no berk's sword fodder. I ain't even heard your names yet."

"What do you think Eir?" Karrin asks, trying on one of the suggested dresses, "I like that it allows me lots of arm movement so I can still smash stuff, too bad my legs are kinda hemmed up, but I like the color . . . and the fabric feels nice on my skin."

neuter Robbit (variant halfling with reptilian appearence) Rogue2 / Wizard (transmuter) 1

"My name is Theriopodid Proudtalon, called" -greep-. "My name is my own to share but my partners' names belong to them."

-grEep-

"We want to know more of these Gobbos. Their antics have annoyed a friend of mine, and she might of started something between the Claw and us the other day over breakfast." -greep- "Are you interested in meeting my partners and perhaps working together? If their tribe has been selling as much many wagons of salt as I've heard about, there could be a profit in clearing up our different concerns."

-grreep-

"Perhaps I should bring my other partners into our discussion. Shall we arrange to meet again?"

Wightscale grins at Greep

"Fair enough. Yeh get yer crew together an' I'll get mine. Can yeh be back here by the third hour of Afterpeak? (3 PM-it's @10AM now) I can sees perhaps this could be mutually beneficial if we can lay our mitts on this salt."

Wightscale grins wider.

"Perhaps the gobbos might like a few lessons on how to mine. I'd be glad to give them the chance to learn."

neuter Robbit (variant halfling with reptilian appearence) Rogue2 / Wizard (transmuter) 1

"If I can't get them together by then, I'll be here to explain why."

"Fair enough. Jest come into this bar an' ask fer me if yeh don't see me in the common room."

Wightscale squeezes Greep's hand as they shake. Greep is surprised in the strength the small albino's hand delivers.

"If yeh tryin' to give me the laugh or play me fer a berk yeh will regret it me foine boyo. Jest so we all knows what the score is."

Greep nods his understanding. He and Ffethpaar make their exit.

Unless Ffeth wants to do something else, it's off to gather the troops. Do we stand a chance of catching up to them in time? I've lost track of when everyone else is.

Time hack

Before Antipeak Day 1:
Zigel: At Swordhold District tavern the Skull and Scepter, and on hold until he gets straightened out
Swift: At The Burrows Busker's Ball in the Curlyfoot District, probably all night.
Before Peak Day 2:
Ffethpaar and Greep: Having an interesting chat with Wightscale at the Scaly Claw in the Central District neighborhood of Sliss.
Afterpeak Day 2:
Eir and Karrin: Shopping for party dresses with Hanali. On their way back to the Silver Rose

So you still have some time to make up before syncing with Karrin and Eir. This will be easy, as you have to head back to the Silver Rose. Swift has to finish up her date, then we can have her meet with you. I'm not sure what is going on with Zigel, we'll have to assume he is going to get onboard, but we wont rely on it.

But will Karrin have time to learn to curtsy?

Karrin knows about curtsying, having both read about it in books and having seen it in plays . . . Karrin has never met someone she needs to curtsy too though, and the real question is will she remember she needs too?

Skrint and Swift dance among the crowd in their own little bubble. The music swells, the lutes and oboes of the busker trio carrying over the gaily-dressed crowd. They stand close twirling along the polished wood floor. Skrint smiles enigmatically as Swift pulls him closer, but he doesn't pull away.

After the song ends, Skrint takes Swift over to the punchbowl for a bit of refreshment. The large crystal bowl is stewarded by a large portly male hobbit, dressed in a green waistcoat and tails with a long salt-and-pepper handlebar moustache. He smiles and hands the two glasses of pinkish punch that tastes of lemon and mint.

Swift is just about to take her second sip when she spies someone she had not thought she would see here of all places. In the corner of the cavernous ballroom, Mr. Sage is standing, in a severe black suit of formal clothes. He is arguing with a hobbit man, one dressed like a spellcaster of some sort. The two break off and look around, then begin to move to a side hallway that leads off to the interior of the large inn.

Female Tibbit Rogue 3

Swift's eyes widen at the sight and she gives a small 'meep' sound before turning back to Skrint, utterly torn between spending more time with the handsome ranger and finding out a little more about the mysterious Mr. Sage. Between her happiness and the potential happiness of Emelia. Pointing the man out the man to the catfolk she gives a sad sound

Feline:

Spoiler:
"That's the man that keeps the girl who sometimes feeds me locked away and often chases me away from her... I really don't trust him"
She explains, hoping he'll understand her internal conflict.

Greep and Ffethpar depart from the Scaly Claw Tavern and head out back to their companions. They skirt the New Market, aware that the area most likely has goblin eyes scattered about. They head towards Copper Court through the Before Peak crowds.

The streets of Sigil are thronged with servants, touts and womenfolk scurrying about on their various errands. The usual leavening of strange creatures pepper the Cage's streets: A gaggle of Thri-Kreen amble by on their skinny insectile legs. A richly-garbed snake-headed man ambles along lazily, a bevy of beautiful women in tow. A Mercane stares avidly from a bejeweled palanquin carried by tattooed men, his retinue of Ogre bodyguards surrounding him in a scowling shield of flesh.

Ffethpaar and Greep make it back to the Silver Rose before any of their companions. They see Renkar in the practice room, working a wooden sword on a dummy set up. For an older gentleman, Renkar seems to have some good moves left.

As the two enter, Mercutio swoops down on them.

Draconic:

Spoiler:
::Friends! I have been so bored! Do you have anything to eat?::

Renkar laughs and shoos the inquisitive Faerie Dragon away.

"Off mooch! You just ate. Hello Ffethpaar, Greep. Any luck in Sliss?"

Skrint looks over at the retreating backs of Mr. Sage and the strange Halfling.

Feline:

Spoiler:
:: My dear Swift, if you wish to follow him, be my guest. I cannot do your little disguise trick, but I can follow silently in case he gives you a problem::

Skrint pulls up a sleeve of his tunic to reveal a large dagger in a wrist sheath.

Feline:

Spoiler:
::I smell a mystery. Do you need my assistance?::

"We had much success in Sliss." -greep- "We have found a local enforcer who has worries about missing neighbors. Evidently, certain Kobolds have disappeared in the New Market area. As a Kobold himself, this Wightscale wants to correct the problem. He wants to meet with our group to plan a move for tonite."

-greEP-

"I attempted to give him the impression we have offended the Broken Claw during a breakfast meeting." -greep- "And that we wish to deal with them before they deal with us. I did mention that they have been selling quite a bit of salt, so it is possible they are holding some amount of wealth. That didn't hurt his interest."

-GREep-

"He doesn't have any name but mine, so he is eager to meet our side and make final discussions." -greep- "Does this sound acceptable?"

-grEEp-

Female Tibbit Rogue 3

Smiling lightly Swift places a quick, light kiss against Skrint's cheek.

Feline:

Spoiler:
::That would be wonderful, thank you. You know I have difficulties containing my curiousity sometimes::

Giving a grin and a small wink she starts to stalk after Mr. Sage, quickly changing into her cat form if an opportunity and a good, out of the way spot presents itself.

Renkar ponders a bit at this informations

"I think it sounds good on the surface, but these 'street guilds' are notorious for back stabbing. Be careful."

Renkar looks thoughtful

"I would also keep in mind that the Saltiere Society is paying us for the shutting down of the salt mine, or at least its location. If these kobolds get a hold of the mine we would just be switching out their rivals."

Renkar ponders a bit more.

"Of course, once the Saltiere Society knows the location, they will most likely secure the property. I would reccomend that you make no promises to this Wightscale about the mine. Rather, focus on the rescue of his missing people."

At this moment Eir, Karrin and Hanali arrrive.

"Ah ladies! How did your excursion go?"

Swift and Skrint nonchalantly wander off to the back of the ballroom where they saw Mr. Sage and his companion disappear. Skrint motions that he will drop back, and Swift changes into Blacky in a dark corner of the hallway the two had gone down.

This hallway is round like the entryway had been to the Burrow. The doors are all closed, and there is one about every two meters or so. It looks as if these are private rooms of the inn. A stairway leads up and Swift/Blacky can hear the tread of the two heading for the next level. Blacky follows like a small black shadow, Skrint hanging back and moving like a silent wraith.

Blacky arrives at the second floor and observes the two entering a room. The door is shutting behind them. She pads to the door and can make out some muffled conversation.

Roll me a Perception check Swift. The door has shut tight. Unless you have some other interesting scheme to gain access you will have to listen at the door to hear anything.

"What kind of dress are you getting Eir?" Karrin asks as she looks at some of the other samples Jessamyn has laid out for her, "you look good in everything and know so much about fashion and stuff I'm curious to find out what you're going to choose. Maybe we could get something that matches and people might think we're sisters or something . . ."

That's not too likely . . . but Karrin's never had a lady friend before (at least she thinks of Eir as her friend) and isn't quite sure how to act around her. Here adoptive monk family certainly didn't have any problems with dressing alike ;)

Blacky presses her ear to the door. Her acute hearing and the raised voices allow her to hear a lot of the conversation.

Voice One:

"I'm telling you Sagish, I tried ... but it aint easy. I need ... to get it out of the Society's ..."

Voice Two:

"Broadfoot, you tax my patience. You ... the Codex Sanguinus Militarus by Peak last ... alignment is approaching ... ritual is strict and I need those formulae!"

One:

"I can't go farther without more bribe ... the librarian ... valuable text."

Two: (voice raised ... can be discerned now as Mr. Sage)

"Do you realize what you are doing to me? I have finally ... the potency of ... two degrees of corporeal consanguinity to a member of the Hebdomad! Do you even comprehend how rare that is? I NEED THAT TEXT!"

One:

"Then open up yer purse an' give me the jink I need to oil the palms!"

At this point there is a long pause. Blacky cannot make out any sounds of conversation. Finally talk resumes at a much lower tone.

One:

"This should ... Scaramundi will ... hope it is ..."

Two:

"Never ... just make sure ... as soon as ... "

Blacky can hear footsteps approaching the door.

Karrin glances down at her arms, despite her immense strength, due to some trick of her fiendish blood, Karrin is probably not much larger then Eir. Her body is incredibly toned, there is hardly a hit of fat on her despite her eating habits, but Karrin looks more like a swimmer then a body builder.

As far as simple shape goes, Karrin's biceps are pretty unremarkable, however they do sport some tattoos (which Karrin got fairly recently, possibly while Eir and Karrin were both in the employment of Hal'Oight). These tattoos are sort of generic (the plains version of barbed wire) but they do look pretty good on Karrin, her redish skin is a nice contrast to the black tattoos.

"Wow," Karrin says to Eir, "You think so? They are some pretty badass tattoos but I'm not sure I want to marry someone who's only attracted to my tattoos. I mean I got them to make me look like I was serious business, I'm not sure I want someone who attracted to that sort of thing . . ."

Renkar clears his throat

"I am glad you all had a good time today, but I think we need to get settled and plan out what we are going to do, especially in light of Ffethpaar and Greep's new tenative alliance with this 'Wightscale' character."

Renkar looks around

"By the way, has anyone seen Swift? Or Zigel?"

Zigel groans as his eyes open blurrily. What in the Nine Hells was he drinking last night? All he can remember was playing several rounds of Stingers with Nightwind and taking Bytopian grain alcohol shots off Veria's stomach. It got a little fuzzy after that.

What the Hells was that stench? Zigel's stomach does a slow flip flop as he groans and tries to focus his eyes. Slowly the scene comes clear.

He is in a large grey-canvas tent. There are several cots and a couple of chests scattered about. Nightwind is in the tent as well, reading a scroll from a small lapdesk. He looks up at Zigel's groans and smiles grimly.

"Good morning sleepy head."

Zigel can't quite comprehend what is going on, he grunts an inquisitive sound. Kratos appears from under his cot and begins to lick his face.

"Welcome to The Baatorian Foreign Legion, mate." Nightwind says "I tried to stop you from playing poker with Veria and her friend Annessa, but you wouldn't listen. I can't believe you ponied up your soul! You really need to watch that drinking habit."

Nightwind sighs and sets fire to the scroll he had been reading. He stands up, revealing the grey uniform he had been wearing last night. The pale grey light coming from outside seems to wash out all the colors around him.

"I managed to get your soul traded for a stint in the Legion. Veria still has some feelings for you I guess, that or she thinks you will end up in the Maggot Pit at the end anyway. I figured you would rather be independent than a chattel of those two Erinyes. Life here ain't too bad, I'm a Assault Group Leader, and I attached you on as my adjutant. All yeh got to do is stick close, keep quiet, and listen. The stint's six years, but a canny cutter can learn a lot down here on the Field of Nettles."

The distant sounds of screams and the clash of metal ring out. Nightwind looks out the tent.

"Looks like the demons are trying a sally towards us, Zigel. I have to get going. I will have one of the Quartermasters come by and get you kitted out. Don't go a wandering, this place is hot liquid death."

Nightwind strips down to a loincloth. Zigel sees several patches of fiendish-looking skin scattered on his large body. He murmurs a word in Infernal, and suddenly a spiny carapace erupts from the scaly patches of skin, enveloping him in a coat of fiendish armor. He grabs a huge evil-looking spiked mace and opens the tent flap wide.

"I'll be back to check on you later bro, stay quiet."

Nightwind leaves the large tent. As he leaves Zigel can see a field of six-foot-tall nettles stretching out away from the tent's opening to the horizon. Many of the nettles sport speared corpses of various beings. Several winged creatures fight in the grey sky. A huge reptile equipped with a howdah stomps along the perimeter, it's scaly flanks sheathed in great swaths of barding. Smoke from huge fires and screams from almost every direction lace the air. The flap closes.

Zigel sits back on his cot, holding his throbbing head.

"Soddin' Hell."

Kratos whines sympathetically.

With Zigel taking a tour of duty in the Grey Wastes until he is back full time, I think I will have to come up with a NPC to fill his shoes. Go to the discussion thread and offer any suggestions. Conversely, if you know a good player who likes Planescape perhaps we have room for 1-2 more players.
