Nyalis |
I'm working under the assumption that we can see everything on the map or GM wouldn't have put them there. If that's not right, I may re-do my action.
"AAHH!"Nyalis shouts in pain. He grabs his arm where the pain started and finds the tiny needle. Just like the needles in the crows, he thinks.
"Look! Over there in the trees, " points Nyalis. I think those are the creatures that must have killed the crows. Nyalis moves into position move action: 1 square SW and mumbles in elvish "Rosa naur tuulo' Arvandor!" as he extends his arm toward the creature in the trees.
Standard action: Bomb targeted at the green creature
Attack, Bomb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage, bomb: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Also, super cool map. Do you mind if I ask where you found it? I don't think it's stock RoW sourcebook.
GM My Bright Morning |
I see you rolled Perception checks for us, and I paid enough attention to know it is our turn, what I don't know is if I see any targets. I'm not sure what I should do, because I don't know what I know.
Sorry I didn't make it clear. too much in that post... yes, you are able to see everything on the map. if one or more of you had rolled bad on perception you might not have seen one or more of the enemies, but it turned out they rolled poorly on their checks to hide again after taking shots (at a -20, so it's not an easy check)
The map is not from RoW. I'm not sure if it is from another Paizo book or from a 3pp. they didn't provide a map for a lot of these forest encounters. this one is half of a map that my GM used in a Jade Regent game I am in on these boards. the other half was a big river, so i just cut it off
Easlis Taer |
Though he wanted to tackle the small attacker closer to him Easlis changed his mind completely and charged at the attacker in the distance when hearing Nyalis's war cry.
"Lads, we're being ambushed again! Could you do something about the one on the cliff? He's a tricky one to get to."
The heavy snow appeared to be working against him and barely managed to get next to the northernmost attacker.
"You're a nasty little fellow aren't you? Tell your friends to drop their weapons, before we make you swallow them.
Double move action. I'm starting to regret my spell selections already. Obscuring mist would have done wonders.
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 To know more about the tiny creature in front of him
Brominate |
Remaining hidden, or at least trying, Brominate stays low to snowy ground as he makes his way towards the icy creature with a reddish hue.
Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Double move action as well. Hopefully the red winter-touched is too distracted by the other half-elf to notice me!
Bazikian |
Bazikian reaches out, Desna's luck in his hand, and touches Grimgisli on the back. "Strike well, friend!" he says in a low voice. He then moves to try to take cover between the trees from two of the creature's ranged attacks.
Using bit of luck on Gisli. You can reroll any d20 during the next round and take the better result.
Grimgisli |

GM My Bright Morning |
Nyalis reacts quickly upon seeing the needle in his flesh and responds with fire! The bomb hits, and the creature screams in pain as it burns. It falls from the air, dead after just one hit.
Grimgisli receives a blessing from Desna that nudged his aim just slightly, allowing him to hit the creature above the rocks.
These creatures are sprites, tiny fey that tend to be curious but also skittish if they are faced with a fight. Normally they are defenders of nature, these ones seem to be somehow corrupted to be more aggressive.
You also know that as fey they are resistant to normal damage from anything other than cold iron, and these ones seem to have a weakness to fire if Nyalis' bomb is any indication
blue attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
blue crit confirm: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
The blue sprite fires another arrow at Grim, then backs away a bit in the air.
Fortitude Grimgisli: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 2 points of damage, nothing else
Wow, 3 20s in a row. good thing these things do very little regular damage or that might have hurt!
The red sprite speaks a phrase in Sylvan and a burst of crazy colors fly from his hand in a cone, washing over Easlis and Brominate.
Will Easlis: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Will Brominate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Both are able to keep their wits about them and are unaffected by the spell

Nyalis |
GM - Nyalis speaks sylvan if there is anything he would hear or learn from the red sprite. Not sure how loud it would be or if he is in a position to overhear that or not.
Seeing his target fall to the ground, Nyalis steps up to help Grimgisli with the blue creature. Move action: 2 squares north He warns Grim, "Stay back a bit if you can, my fireballs affect a large area."
Nyalis then unleashes his magic on the blue attacker, "Rosa naur tuulo' Arvandor!"
Attack, Bomb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Damage, bomb: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
That's not so good of an attack roll, if the bomb misses it should probably go one square back toward Nyalis. EEEK! As long as nobody gets any closer, we should stay out of the blast range, I hope..

Easlis Taer |
Seeing the little creature trying to escape further north Easlis pursues it and speaks in elven keeping his eyes fixed on the enemy as if he was talking to himself, not wanting to attract attention to Brom.
Easlis approaches the creature from the south-west, he draws his sword and starts speaking in a language he did not hear since his childhood. It was one of those which you have little chance to practice unless you were in the right circles. He recalled some words then tried to make what he could with them.
He takes just a second to look at the cliffs above fearing that he might have actually been drawn into a trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Not much happening this round either. But at least I've got the chance to draw my sword and staying away from Nyalis's bombs.
Grimgisli |
"Fey! We need Cold Iron or fire!" And I've got neither.
Grim still works to line a shot and take it, hoping he can get a clean enough shot to matter.
Bow w/PBS @ blue: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 5 + 1 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Can't complain about that damage roll. Now, was the attack roll big enough for it to matter?
Brominate |
Brominate, having lost a sneaky advantage, and wishing to fell this fey fiend quickly, pulls out his other dagger and swipes with both.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

I typed this quickly, if I put in a wrong number I'm sorry. Doing a game-night w/ family
GM My Bright Morning |
Grim's arrow pierces the blue sprite, and even with the damage reduction, ends its life.
The red fey sees the others fall and starts to flee, taking a slash from Brominate. full withdraw action. it is now just off the map to the left. ranged characters might get one more shot off at it if you want to try
Bazikian |
Bazikian fires at the sprite with his crossbow.
Crossbow: 1d20 ⇒ 19

Easlis Taer |
With sadness in his eyes Easlis lifts his arms pointing towards the escaping creature and whispers some words in elven. A green bolt flies from his hands towards the creature.
Acid Splash attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Zeke, Brom I think you should check your critical range of your weapons. You might need critical confirmation for your last attacks.
Bazikian |
Thanks Easlis, was a super quick post :)
Crit confrim: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Grimgisli |
Not expecting much luck, shooting at such a small target moving so quickly, when they seem to be ignoring most contact in the first place, Grim recognizes the group desire not to let one get away, so he tries the shot.
Bow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
The shot is more about not being seen as letting it go than it is about stopping it, though.
Nyalis |
Based on Grim killing the last sprite in initiative order, I think Nyalis didn't use the last bomb. Is that correct?
Seeing the blue createure fall, Nyalis re-focuses his attention on the remaining attacker. Move action: 2 squares west
That's about as far as I can make the shot. I think I'll let discretion be the better part of valor here. If I miss too badly, I could hurt the team. My measure says it's about 55' away, which is well into long range.
Instead, Nyalis cheers his teammates. "Hurrah all! I knew we had it in us. Let's drive those evil fey out here!"
Daily bombs left: 4/5

GM My Bright Morning |
The last shot from Bazikian hits the sprite but isn't enough to take it out, and it continues out of sight in the falling snow.
There is little of value on the dead sprites, each one has a tiny bow and arrows, and a tiny short sword.
The bandits' trail continues on into the forest. Just up ahead you know there is a river, and one of the major fords is on this path.
Grimgisli |
Water crossing, in this weather? Better hope the water's frozen over solid enough, or we're going to be in far worse shape after crossing than we are right now. Don't want to scare these Southerners until I need to, though.
Nyalis |
All the tiny stuff is without value? Or do you want an appraise check for that?
As the group leaves the site where they were ambushed and continues up the trail, Nyalis keeps his eyes busy scanning the forest for other signs of the bandits or other evil fey.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
When they arrive at the river crossing, Nyalis asks the group, "So, what do you think? We have been the targets of traps and ambushes too much in the past few days. Keep your eyes and ears open. Anything could happen here."
Easlis Taer |
The magus follows the group but his mind was wandering far away. He inspected the riverside searching for any points of crossing.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
"For one thing, the enemy was expecting someone to follow on their trail, they wouldn't have blocked the zombies in the caravan or left the chest trap otherwise.
Furthermore, considering the amount of noise and smoke we make for each fight I would be surprised if they wouldn't have noticed our progress.
And lastly, the critter from the last fight had escaped. My guess is that our small friends were a scouting party, completely unprepared to face us. But now they also know what to expect, my guess is that our next fight with them will not be that easy.
Given all we've experienced these past days, we should be very careful how we cross the river."
Brominate |
The childless father scoffs a bit at Easlis' and responds with a gruff,
"Ya think?! How about we shut it until there's something useful to say or something awful trying to kill us? ... ... ... I'm sorry ... ... ... you didn't deserve that. Why don't you see if you can assist others in finding a way across. Imma watch for danger."
Brominate keeps a keen eye peeled.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
...wow...Y'know I'd love to get three 20's in a row too!
Grimgisli |
When they get to the river, Grim scans for signs of opposition, but then turns his focus to the river and ford, looking to see if things are as bad as he feared.
Perception in forest: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 1 = 9
GM My Bright Morning |
Approaching the river ford you see that the river does indeed seem to be frozen over. You can see on the near shore of the river, someone has built a snowman. it has something hanging around its neck, that looks to be a sign of some sort.
Nyalis |
"Well, I think it is safe to assume it wasn't village kids making snowmen here, " deadpans Nyalis.
"Does anybody want to go push it over? " he asks. "After the log trap on that chest, I think it will pay to be very careful."
Nyalis strains his elven eyes to try to read the sign from a distance.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
The goal here is to stay as far away as possible. If it seems like he needs to get close to read the sign, Nyalis will back off.
Easlis Taer |
"I think that..." the magus started to say but then stopped promptly looking long at Brominate and began casting a spell moving his arms wide open. When he finishes casting the spell he squints at what is hanging by the snowman's neck.
He waits until everyone gets a chance to have a look at the snowman and then gets as close as he can to the frozen river without touching it and prepares another spell unleashing a bolt of acid towards the snowman but missing widely.
Casting detect magic in elven
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Acid Splash: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Bazikian |
Bazikian starts as Easlis fires off his bolt of acid. "What is it, Easlis? What do you see?"
Grimgisli |
Grim watches his companions with some amusement. "The frozen fey have really worked you guys up, haven't they? Hopefully that ice is solid enough to keep us from getting wet. That could kill us in this weather." He moves forward, towards the snowman, keeping his eyes open and watching the surrounding vegetation, until he's close enough to read the sign (or something happens to stop him).
GM My Bright Morning |
You do detect magic. As you concentrate, you see there are actually 3 auras coming from the snowman: illusion, abjuration, and evocation. all 3 are faint auras.
Without coming too close, you can all read the sign on the snowman's neck. it is written in crude hand-painted letters spelling out in Common:
Trespassers Turn Back
Easlis Taer |
"Hmmm... there are magic auras in that snowman. It is quite unlikely somebody has left magic items to reward the persons ignoring their signs. "
Easlis said scratching his chin looking suspiciously at the snowman and the ice ahead.
"So Zeke, the short answer would be that there could be two, maybe three of the critters we faced hiding in the snowman. Or one very elaborate magic trap.
Plus if they just wanted to be left alone they would have cracked the ice. "
He unleashes another bolt of acid in the direction of the hidden enemy.
"Who's up for a contest of whack the snowman from a distance? But please, try not blast the ice before they do."
Acid Splash: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Nyalis |
"You know, Grimgisli, after the last 2 days I would not say the fey got to me. I'd say they showed how devious they are and that they deserve to be treated like the danger they are. You can't be too careful after what we have been through. "
Then, continuing to look at the snowman, Nyalis declares. "I don't think there are any of the creatures we fought earlier here. If there were, they would likely already be shooting those tiny arrows at us. I'm more concerned about all the magic Easlis has detected."
I'm assuming there is enough snow here to make a snowball, if not substitute a rock for this action, please.
Easlis always has the coolest magic. I'll need to get him to show me that when we camp tonight. I guess I'll do it the old-fashioned way.Nyalis packs a double-handful of snow into a snowball and tosses it at the snowman.
throw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Nyalis' snowball hits close to where Easlis' spell landed. Hoping to knock over the snowman or otherwise affect it. Nyalis can keep up the snowball onslaught if necessary.
Brominate |
Brominate, already perceiving the imminent danger, crouches down and starts gathering up snow, trying to build it up into some sort of compacted snow wall to provide some cover, should combat ensue.
Bazikian |
It's likely the snowman has a Dex of less than 6, and as far as I can tell it's not wearing armour, so its AC is likely 7 or less ;)
Bazikian watches as the others cast missiles at the snowman, waiting to see what happens when it's struck.
Bazikian |
[/ooc]Doesn't bat an eyelid, huh? This snowman's obviously a cool cat. Must have ice in his veins...[/ooc]
"Well, maybe it's just a snowman holding a sign? Sometimes things are actually just as they appear to be. Not always, of course, and if there's an enchantment on it we probably should just avoid it, I agree, Easlis, it's not likely an item that you're detecting."
Easlis Taer |
The magus raises one of his long eyebrows when he sees no reaction from the snowman. This can't be right. What am I missing?
"Balzikian is right. If we have to pass the river with that thing still intact we should stay away from it as far as possible."
Easlis goes to the carriage, starts looking through his sacks and draws a long silk rope from one of them and a grappling hook. He ties one end of the rope the carriage and the other to the grappling hook and returns to the group with the rope.
"If we're going to do this let's prepare for the worse. We could try to reduce the risk of injury from falling if we fix the rope to the other side and hold tight to it. I'm going to stand behind with Ol'Dusty until everybody passes."
Bazikian |
No love for my (stupid) snowman puns! Come on guys, throw me a bone!
"Well, I guess it makes sense for me to go across first, as I'm the lightest. Also, most of the rest of you seem prone to getting injured rather easily, so in the event of an surprise attack on whoever's over the river by themselves, I'm more likely than most to survive. If there are no objections...?" Bazikian takes hold of the rope and prepares to cross, waiting only for the agreement of the rest of the party.
Bazikian's rambling aside, I've actually got the best AC/hp combo in the party. If something attacks, I'm sure I can hold out with total defence (AC 21) until you all get across.
GM My Bright Morning |
As Bazikian moves towards the river, the snowman turns its head towards the gnome and speaks in common:
Can’t you read? The sign says turn back! Now get lost!
Bazikian |
Bazikian freezes, then looks back at his companions, eyebrows raised as if to say, What do I do now?
Nyalis |
I laughed when I read the snowman with ice in his veins. Was wondering if it would make an in-character appearance.
Once the snowman starts speaking, Nyalis draws his sword and assumes a defensive position on the party's side of the river and starts looking for other signs of movement or ambush.
"Keep an eye out for an ambush!" he says to the team.
Assuming nothing else happens other than the snowman speaking, after a few short moments, Nyalis urges Bazikian. "Standing by the river bank is not a good position. We have the other end of the rope but it's up to you. Charge on or regroup with us."
Easlis Taer |
To be honest the snowman pun put a smile on my face first time I read it.
"Zeke, could you please explain to the nice snowman our situation? " Easlis shouted then continued in a musshed tone to the rest of the group:
"I might have been slightly incorrect in my initial presumption. I'm a bit bothered with what the snowman hadn't said. He mentioned nothing about our attack, nor did he made any observations while we were planning our crossing. Please don't let your guard down just because it looks harmless "
With that said Easlis starts scratching his head in confusion thinking about spell combinations.
Arcane knowledge about combining magic from the 3 schools for remote control/automation : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Grimgisli |
Grim refuses to admit being entertained by bad puns.
"Okay, that was kinda cute, wasn't it? I wonder how far the voice carried, though? Did it alert anyone? Watch for incoming . . .." Grim takes his own advice, holding an arrow nocked, but not drawn.
Brominate |
Brominate hopes to give everyone a chance to cross, or at least for Zeke to finish crossing. So he gets up from the snow and pointedly walks toward the snowman, unthreatening but with his dagger concealed. He looks straight at his gnome friend and tries to signal to wait for the opportune moment to finish crossing.
”Pardon me, my frozen friend, we don’t mean to trespass. We’re looking for someone who has... gone missing. Might I inquire as to what lies beyond the river? It’s completely possible we took a left when we shoulda gone right, but we just want to make sure. So, friend, what day you?”
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
GM My Bright Morning |
The snowman doesn't reply to Brominate's questions. it simply repeats the last statement it made
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
You do not know what combination of spells might be at play here. After seeing it activated, you do realize one of the three spells is Magic Mouth.
Please place yourselves on the map. I don't know if I commented when I added one for the river crossing. I moved Bazikian and Brominate up a bit, but feel free to move them where you want them to be
Easlis Taer |
"It's no use, you know, it only knows the words it has been taught. Same goes for its spells, I guess." Easlis tells Brom somewhat embarrassed by his initial misinterpretation of the snowman followed by the blunder of suggesting communication with it.
Nyalis |
Finally back and functional. I placed Nyalis on the map.
As Brominate investigates and talks with the snowman, Nyalis maintains his defensive position and stays vigilant for the signs of an ambush.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
"What do you all think? We could make a run for it as a group or move one at a time to establish a foothold on the other side of the river. I'll just suggest that we disturb the snowman as little as possible in order to not alert its creator."
Bazikian |
Bazikian, hearing the assessments of his companions, starts to cross the frozen river, the rope tied around his waist.
GM My Bright Morning |
I will try to get a post up tomorrow with what happens now. Timing is bad on this one, I have a good amount to write but I'm on mobile.
