Jareen makes sure he's well covered by his cloak, ostensibly from the sun and heat, but he also makes sure to keep at the opposite side of the caravan from the feathered men. Some time safe:

"The ones with the feathers are Templars, from Draj."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Good to know," says Furio. "Maybe they know stuff about the moon. Wonder what's in their wagon?"

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"I would guess a prisoner, or some form of dangerous animal. My money would be in the prisoner, care to take a bet?"

There is a lot of shouting from the merchants, guides and guards, and grunting, groaning and lowing from the various beasts of burden. The caravan organises itself into a line and begins trailing out of Altaruk, heading north. The band of adventurers form the advance guard, leading the way on their crodlus.

They reach the point where the road splits three ways about a mile outside town. Continuing north is the route to Tyr. It heads over a low saddle in the foothills to the south of the mountains and, out of sight, dips down into the dunes beyond. To the east, the road skirts south of the mountains on its way to Gulg. In between, aiming straight for the jagged, arid peaks to the north-east, is the road to Urik and the cities of the north.

Taking this path, they find road begins to rise as it heads into the dusty hills. Low scrub clings in a few places but otherwise the land is barren. The way begins to meander as it winds about rocky promontories and climbs the increasingly precipitous slopes in switch-back fashion. The rounded hills of the morning are by afternoon jagged, knife-edge ridges of dun stone running up to the peaks above.

Perception checks, please.

Everyone except Furio and Irivis (not heard much from her lately):

Spoiler:
You see large birds circling ahead - probably desert scavengers known as kestrekels. Fairly harmless individually, but they can form dangerous predatory flocks en masse. Something on the road ahead seems to be interesting them.

Arakan's crodlu died on the charge into the bandit camp before we went into the tunnels. Am I able to buy another one, or were there extras at the camp? Both he and Safier would have had to walk back or double up on the return to Altaruk.

There were extras at the camp.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"Let's have a careful look at what's exciting those birds."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Back. Connection issues. Irivis never had a crodlu, so she'll buy one before we attempt to hire ourselves out. I guess anyone can ride one?

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Too concerned with wondering what the Templars are hiding, Irivis is entirely unaware of the birds until Jareen points them out.

"We're on point, let's go and find out."

The group ride on along the road for perhaps another mile. They hear the croaking of the squabbling kestrekels before they see them, fighting over something beside the road. Close to, these are big, scruffy-looking birds with black, greasy feathers and ugly bald heads. Their heads and beaks are currently smeared with blood as they feast, the press of their bodies obscuring what it is they are consuming.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Irivis rides closer, waving her staff as a deterrent and possibly hoping for a roast kestrekel dinner as well.

I'm assuming pretty much anything in Athas can be turned into a meal of some kind - witness the kestrekels themselves.

This being Athas, of course, the same goes for the PCs.

The kestrekels don't want to give up their meal, and many leap to attack the interfering new arrivals.

Roll initiative. Map to follow.

You are on a mountain path. To the left, represented by the grey, is a cliff wall rising up. The light yellow in the middle is the road, and on the right (where the hard black border runs between the light yellow of the road and the dark yellow of the drop, representing the edge) is a cliff face going down about 50' to the bottom of a ravine.

You are approaching from the south, so please place yourselves at row 15 or below. The exception is Irivis, who has bravely ridden ahead to face the kestrekel hordes alone. She is between 10 and 14.

Please note, the four individual enemies are not individual kestrekels, these are four kestrekel flocks. Also please note, you are all mounted on crodlus, so you occupy four squares each while you remain so.

Jareen, although Th'Kal can presumably do his Battlefront Shift courtesy of Gart first.

For the purposes of curses, do flocks count as one enemy?

Yes, a single enemy.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

In for a penny, in for a pound, how easily do birds sleep?

Jareen concentrates on the birds, and then quietly speaks a word of power.

Cast sleep on G6. They are all slowed. If the attacks below hit, they are also unconscious.

Male Thri-Kreen Barbarian 5 :: HP 53/53 +0 temp; Surges 10/10 [ AC 20, F 20, R 19, W 13 ]

I'll take G/H-17/18. The crodlu has a speed of eight, so with Gart's power (half speed shift) I think I can shift to the squares directly in front of him: H/I-13/14...
Though to be honest, I would defer the shift to Irivis, allow her to shift BACK closer to us.

So, if Irivis wants the shift, I will stay at G/H-17/18

Waiting to see the effect of Jareen's spell...

MAP 42/42 hp

battlefront shift is close burst 3, not sure if it reaches her...

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Sorry forgot placemnet, I17-J18

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Darn, that's annoying. I'd forgotten about Crodlu speed when I was placing Irivis. Yes please, I'll take the shift and move back, if I can.

Battlefront Shift can reach Irivis, as she is well within Burst 3, so she may take it if she wishes.

Also, just to clarify the Sleep spell. If the spell misses, the target is slowed (save ends). If the spell hits, the target is also slowed (save ends) but if it fails its first saving throw, the target instead becomes unconscious (save ends). Hitting it is not enough to guarantee sleepiness.

Map updated. If Irivis wants to shift back, she needs to do it now before we really get started (and strictly, it'll be before Jareen casts his spell). Then, once Irivis has determined her shift (or otherwise), it is Th'Kal's turn.

Irivis.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"Doing my best. I don't think this thing knows how to reverse."

Irivis backs her crodlu awkwardly back down the path to make way for the weapon wielders. A well phrased curse forms in her mind.

OK, because of the placing of the other PCs, Irivis only moves back a single square.

Jareen casts his spell.

The kestrekels begin to flap about dozily.

Th'Kal.

Affected by Jareen's spell, the kestrekels can do little more than flop forwards towards the party. Some of them drop to the ground and simply lie there, but others seem to recover and squawk angrily.

Th'Kal spurs his crodlu into action and charges the nearest mass of birds.

Standard Action: Charge to E/F-11/12 and Howling Strike vs K1
Howling Strike: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 11 + 1 = 15 vs AC,
if it hits... damage: 1d12 + 1d6 + 1d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + (4) + (6) + 6 + 2 = 23

MAP 42/42 hp

Figuring the front line will be filled with Thkal and Furio, Gart draws his dejada and loads it.

If you are charging you have to move by the shortest possible route to the enemy, which Th'Kal's charge is not. Since he misses anyway, I'll just call it a move.

Th'Kal's bold sweep of his axe largely misses most of the avian pests.

Map updated.

Arakan.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan still doesn't have much of a clear view as to what's going on ahead, nor the distance to do too much about it. His curiosity getting the better of him, he decides to ride up closer.... but not too close to where he isn't safely behind Th'Kal.

Double-move to behind Th'Kal at the E13/F14 intersection.

Map updated.

Irivis.

Irivis?

Don't know what's happened to Irivis - someone take her turn, please.
