Diplomacy in Starfinder seems like it's just an out of combat long term skill now. I'd abstract it a bit so that if there's no indication of combat breaking out then I'm not going to require players to say they spend 10 minutes with a person to improve their attitude. Still, no making instant friends with patrolling guardsmen!

Well your Bluff worked that's why the guy went to check with the boss. But these are generally violent and territorial people and their boss is an exceptionally violent and territorial person. They're also paranoid since Downside Kings leadership changes hands very quickly through violent means.

Also cyber security is not something they care about :).

OK, so what now? Getting into a firefight when they've got the drop on us strikes me as a good way to get killed.

I suggest we back out politely, give them a few minutes to forget about us and go back to their cards and then burst in with gunfire and grenades. At the moment, they don't know we're armed, so there's no reason for them to worry about us.

2) I'm 99% sure Leila shot her for 4 non-lethal. Soooooooo ... I'm not sure if coup de grace is actually a thing in Starfinder but otherwise it might be worth it to pew-pew a little bit more just to be sure!

(If we are going for that. We might also get one of those fancy recurring villains blaming us for the downfall of their entire lives-work! That can also be *uh* interesting.)

Well, Astri will just keep shooting until she's dead, so eh. Non-lethal works weird in Starfinder though. I think technically as long as your last hp is deducted with non-lethal is a knock-out, but if it's lethal you're "dead". That's how I interpreted it anyway.

You're correct, lasers are incredibly efficient by nature! 100 watts is actually a really, really powerful laser. For instance, a 1 watt laser can be used to slowly burn holes in wood, or kill a fly if it flew into the beam. 10 watts would probably be more realistic for a laser weapon, but I figured if it's enough to actually kill someone in a few shots and can compete with ballistic weapons over twice the distance, it would have to be very powerful.

I should probably go read up on non-lethal then, I just assumed it worked like in pathfinder. It's always interesting to see what they decided to change :P

100W still feels a bit low - cutting lasers are around a few thousand W. But I'm not sure if laser weaponry is actually supposed to cut trough things or just light them on fire ...

But really the real question is "can we use a laser gun to cut trough things?" more specifically walls? That might come in handy if one were to find oneself in say a club and the only real entrance might be swarming with thugs soon!

From what I saw there isn't separate lethal and non-lethal damage tracking now, so it gets weird. GM might have to rule on that.

My only experience is with research-grade lasers used to excite fluorescent and phosphorescent molecules. So I know how those lasers work, but I don't know anything about cutting or industrial lasers. It could be we're both right!

Mm that does seem to be the way things work! Just have to remember it now! But on the bright side, it's a bit less bookkeeping when tracking damage.

It feels more likely that all three of us, including the starfinder writers, are wrong instead. But it's fun to speculate : )


According to the rules the last hit is the only one that counts to determine lethality. Seems like a decent enough simplification of Pathfinder. If the group is trying to bring someone down non lethally then the last hit will most probably always be what the group wants, same for lethal. If the group is doing different things than the last hit takes precedence

With Astrianna and Fianh being the way they are and Prospero-4 being quite neutral in all things I think Leila is going to have to get used to a lot of summary executions though!

I think, so far, that the worst things for me are all the little things you thought you knew but then realize that they changed. I mean most of the changes are probably actually for the better but still. Mild annoyance :P

Also! No spaceship yet. But I think this one will come eventually, if we are patient. But still. Spaceship! To draw a parallel it's like the build-up in Kingmaker where you are itching to start a kingdom but aren't quite there yet. But I suspect waiting a little will only make it so much sweeter when we do have a spaceship!

The best thing is harder for me to determine. It's like which ingredient of pancakes is the best? I mean you need most of them for it to actually be pancakes!

Though I must say I enjoyed the small not plot-related scenes such as meeting the dwarf and so. That was fun and it makes the place seem more alive.

I'm not sure if I have any useful advice just yet - but if I think of anything I'll let you know! And it's going great so far : )

Combat, as it is right now, isn't terribly exciting. But that's really just low-level pathfinder-ish combat for you. There isn't much (yet) beyond "I pew-pew they pew-pew I pew-pew". Since we are mostly ranged as well we don't even have to bother with flanks and stuff (which makes it so much easier to use theatre of the mind though!). But I think this will come eventually as we gather some levels and fun trinkets.

The talky and investigative bits however were fun. I enjoy that there's a bit of the later but not overly much. Sometimes making a lot of choices in pbps can drag the game to a halt, so I like that it is fewer but bigger decisions.

The NPCs so far have been enjoyable to interact with. Even if we have ended up causing a majority physical harm :P

I like how the setting is described and presented and I look forward to more exotic locales to visit! ... Maybe say some sort of asteroid-sized diamond :P?

Your setting descriptions are excellent, I have been enjoying reading them and it makes me look forward to seeing new places! The story is pretty standard (but not uninteresting) so far, but that's to be expected. Giving us time to adjust to this new world is a good thing. Plus I've never done RPing in anything but medieval fantasy games, so I need to adjust to all the concerns of being a murderhobo in a futuristic setting, such as video secrity and cellular devices!

NPC interactions are very good, perhaps your strongest trait. They act consistently and have their own motivations. I don't have much to say because really- keep doing what you're doing. And don't put up with Astri's b$+!%#%&, or she'll try to get away with anything.

Leila described combat very well. I'm trying not to dominate the talky bits so everyone can have a say but also handling my job as group face. You've mostly done this job for me by giving the other characters interactions in which their characters hold clout or knowledge of a specific group that Astrianna isn't connected to. INvestigation bits are fun and you've done a great job providing multiple avenues for us to succeed (or creatively fail, as we saw with the last bluff attempt).

Game is going great, you really have a knack for keeping the ball rolling and making sure all the posting is on track!

Best part: Talking to npcs!

Worst part: Me actually playing Astrianna consistently. She's so far removed from my own personality I sometimes find her difficult to play. It's a fun challenge, though. Looking forward to when she gets a chance to really screw someone over.
