Esmeralda comes out of her practical blur with a nod, gathering her surroundings yet again. She'd been in deep thought since they'd left the spider encounter with what to do with Penance, but she wasn't about to point that out.

"I'm of the distinct impression that the majority of these things are always trouble. But if you want, I could request Penance investigate before one of us did? Unlike the rest of us, he's expendable by virtue of reconstitution tomorrow, though I'm sure it'll cost me dearly... again." she says with a smirk.

She crosses her arms as the Eidolon walks forward, hefting his greatsword.

Don't forget guys, you can move yourselves on the map (and I prefer you do), so that way I know exactly who moves where.

Kascio creeps closer, and Penance moves toward the front as 'commanded'. As the two near, they can see more of the room, and it is even larger still. It seems there are more than the two originally sighted large mounds of dirt. There are signs of more to the south.

As Kascio moves in, and Tanjvats to the edge, the size and shape of the room becomes much clearer. This wide catacomb chamber has rows of burial niches cut into the stone walls. these have all been stripped bare of any former occupants. In all, there are now clearly half a dozen of the ten-foot-high mounds of dirt and debris dominating the floor of the chamber, reaching nearly to the ceiling fifteen feet above. As Kascio moves gingerly further into the room, there comes an odd chittering sound from the mound directly north of him, and accompanying the noise is the mandibled haed of a giant ant. The thing is roughly the size of a pony.

Penance drives his overlarge blade into the large dirt mound, missing the ant completely. Part of the surface of the mound crunches and crumbles with the strike.

Fade sends his ball of light forward, and then with uncommon speed and precision, he zips up beside the ant and spears it right in the middle segment of its large bulbous body. There is and odd squeel that escapes the creature, but even with the thing's ichor oozing from the puncture, it isn't enough to put it down.

Kascio deftly flings a dagger at the second one that emerged, but the blade just lands at the base of the mound in front of the thing.

As Dareon moves past the ant, he uses his common tactic of trying to take their attention away from others. The second ant to emrge, crawls straightaway toward the nearest enemy, which happens to also be Dareon. It too snaps at the man, but comes nowhere even close.

With a single simple-mindedness, Penance trods forward toward the next ant in line. It just so happens to be the one Dareon wanted to focus on. Tanjvats grunted a tentative confirmation to Dareon, but then tried to focus on how to comply.

Am I surrounding them, or myself?

He took a swing and then shifted over, making more room for Kascio, if he needed it.

Swing with my mace at J18 ant, flanking with Fade. 5-ft east to K18.

Kascio steps five feet to the south to flank the ant with Fade. He once again slashes, hoping he can land an attack at some point. Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 2 = 28 for 1d4 + 1 + 1d8 ⇒ (2) + 1 + (4) = 7 damage!

Edit: Holy crap! A two digit number! Confirm: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 2 = 27 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 damage!

Both Dareon try to strike back at the ants while using tactics over force to try and even the score. Unfortunately, tactics did not make up for poorly timed and placed swings and neither of them hit their mark.

The ants return the attentions. The ant snapping at Tanjvats continues it assault. It manages to nip the priest once more but not quite as hard as it did last time.

The big one turn ferociously on Fade after he stabbed it so brutally. It gnashes its big mandibles at him but just barely catches the edge of his armor and doesn't make real contact with flesh. It also raises itself high on its legs to awkwardly thrust forward with the stinger on its thorax. That too is met with the resistance of the elf's armor.

The most recent addition to the group crawls down off the hill and rushes straight for the one standing closest to its dying clutchmate. It's just not enough to hit the barely eluding woman. Almost as if called up by Fade's statement, one more of the things crawls from another of the large mounds.

Ant 1 1d20 + 3 - 6 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 6 = 15
Ant 2 attacks Tanj 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Ant 3 attacks Fade, bite 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15, sting 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Ant 4 charges Esmeralda 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10

Penance knows better than to leave his connection to this plane undefended. He brashly disregards the larger ant between Dareon and Faedrin to rush over and assist the Esmeralda. The big ant swipes at him, but its focus is still more on Fade. When he reaches the newer ant, he whacks it with the heavy sword that he carries, causing a noticeable on the thing.

Ant 3, AoO on Penance 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Kascio, I already have your action for this round, so please do not repost.

Faedrin manages to slip his narrow blade through the larger ant's chitinous armor once more, though the strike doesn't bite nearly as deeply as the previous one. He glances nervously to the side as yet another ant begins to make its way toward the now crowded melee. "Watch out behind you, Tanj! Here comes another one!"

Fade and Kascio both find their centers, and take the moment of focus to deliver stabbing wounds to their respective targets. All the same, it is not enough to make a significant difference, as the creatures still stand and fight.

Esmeralda herself, being threatened as she is, steps back behind Penance and levels her spear at the ant that rushed her, much like she did as it charged. Between the wound she caused as it rushed, and her and Penance's attacks, the beast falls under the barrage.

She should have had an AoO when it charged, as she has a longspear

Seeing another ant fall, Dareon redoubles his assault against the ant in between him and Faedrin, swinging his longsword hard at it in an attempt to finally kill it.

Things finally begin to go in favor of the beleaguered group, where misses before have finally turned into hearty strikes, making considerable headway. Dareon's strike puts his blade hard into the base of the thorax where the stinger emerges. It is too much for the creature, which crumples to the ground.

Tanjvats did his best to negotiate the swirling melee of swords, legs, and mandibles. He stepped to gain an opening on the ant remaining between his companions.

5'ft step to k-19 to flank with Dareon

mace with flank: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16
dmg: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

His blow glanced off the exoskeleton, and he was unsure if it even effected the ant. He tried not to think about the one still behind him.

In the swirling melee of successful strikes, Tanjvats does his part to aid in putting the creatures out of commission. He hits, but it is a haphazard swipe that does little beyond a crack in the creatures shell, and even less to remove the creature's newly established attention on Kascio.

The ant bites the knife wielder, but cannot get through the tough leathers he wears.

As the other two ants ooze ichor from their various wounds, that most recently emerged ant races forward to join the fray. Once again Tanjvats is the target in closest proximity. Even distracted as he was fighting the other ant, the new ant's mandibles came nowhere near closing on Tanj.
