Current Map

As the party approaches the cave, the shreds of woodwork blocking the entrance are flung away. The source of the odd shredding sound becomes apparent as an ant the size of a small pony bursts through. The ant flings ahead of it a bedraggled dwarf. The ant plunges forward through the scraps of boarding, bearing down on the dwarf. It is followed by two small squat humanoids, which seem to be nearly all head — an unfortunate circumstance, considering how ugly its puffy blue face is. The dwarf struggles to crawl away, attempting to protect his head and vitals. As the small humanoids caper about, the ant once more mauls the dwarf, who ceases his struggling.

The lead adventurers are approximately 50' from the dwarf and ant.
map updated - if not beautiful. When I trimmed out the image I hadn't realized the extent of 'outside' that would be useful.

knowledge(nature), DC18 (bonuses as dwarf enemies):
The ugly blue beasties are 'mites', a particular lowly and unlovely sort of fey. They hate dwarves, and have direct empathy/control of vermin, such as the giant ant. They have a nasty little curse at their disposal, and can poke viciously with butter knives.[/dice]

Heh, ya, I want my 8 instead of a 6! *cough* I tell you, Little Foot has the worst dice luck ever. (The first scenario he played, he never made a single roll, the entire game (attack, skill, save, whatever... all failed)... the 2nd scenario... only marginally better)

With a muted and surprised cry, one of the humanoids falls to the ground, transfixed by an arrow through the heart. The second humanoid looks around in sudden fright, and emits a startled squeek. He follows with a rapid stream of harsh-sounding gibberish.

"They killed Kenny! those bastards! Get 'em, Tanto!"

He then makes an emphatic and rather rude gesture at Torean, then backs out of the brighter light, and into the mouth of the cave. In response to the humanoid's urging, the giant ant makes its way to Torean, and attempts to take a large bite.
In response, Little Foot charges the ant, carving a large rent in its chittinous hide. Faerunduil attempts to freeze the humanoid, but his shot is fouled by the charging melee combatants and the humanoid's reposition.

The giant ant waves its mandibles threateningly, emitting a penetrating, chittering cry, while it drums a rear leg on the ground. As it lowers its head in attack, Falksat sinks an arrow in a tender place. The ant flinches from the biting arrow, just as Torean whirls his hammer to drive the arrow's entire length into the ant. It appears the arrow severed something vital inside the ant, and it falls in place like a marionette with its strings sliced.

Firing past the drama with the giant vermin, Cesare shoots at the small humanoid cowering in the mouth of the cave. The shot connects, but does not inflict quite the damage that might be expected. Shedding the arrow, the humanoid emits a frightened 'eep!' and flees into the depths of the cave.
