Players needed for new Eberron Campaign (4E)

Recruitment

Greetings,

we want to start a new Eberron Campaign, using DnD 4.

If you are interested, please create a character using the following guidelines:

* Standard point buy (22 points, one ability starts at 8, others at 10)
* you may choose a background and a theme
* choose dragonmarks only, if you are of the apropriate race (mark of healing only for halflings, mark of warding only for dwarves and so on)
* try to create a character, that fills in a role the party needs (esp. leaders and defenders)
* 100 gold pieces starting wealth
* please try to find a good middleground between optimization and roleplaying - killing the boss monsters in a single round is all nice and good, but it tends to scare DMs off... :-)
* recruitment is open until all five places are occupied, but at least for the next seven days from now on.

We have five places in the party, two of which are already occupied.

Group so far:

Controller: Human Druid (Primal Guardian)
Striker: Human Rogue (Brutal Scoundrel)

I will be your DM for the first small adventure that starts in the city of Sharn. After that, sunshadow will take over.

Dark Archive

I would be interested in playing a Lazy style TacLord, if that's something the group wants. It's been a while since I've played 4e, so I'd have to go brush up on the rules.

Thoughts?

Note: this PC would only be viable if someone has a good MBA.

Sounds cool to me.

Just remember that so far nobody in the group as an amazing basic attack which a Lazylord needs.

The rogue will come out at about +7 atk and 1d4+2 dmg. I doubt that will be enough for you.

Greatweapon Fighter anybody? :-)

I'd be interested in this and I might be able to find something that works without being a greatweapon fighter.

Are you ok with Hybrids btw? (I'm a bit of a hybrid nut)

My original idea was for a Bardent (Bard|Ardent) but I'm not sure we need a 2nd leader with a lazylord on board.

Dark Archive

I, by no means, have the leader slot reserved. If your concept is more appealing to the guys that are already here, then it's yours.

That said, the Lazy lord isn't attached to just a great weapon fighter. Essentials released a bunch of guys that have awesome MBAs. I just have to go look in the books and see what they were.

Slayer and Thief spring to mind.

Barbarians always seem to do well with a couple more swings. I think the swordmage can even be reasonable, if memory serves.

Again, though, if it doesn't mesh with the group, I'll sit this one out.

Hybrids are welcome.

If we end up with five characters, a second leader is a very good option for the fifth slot.

I'll roll up a dragon sorcerer or a storm sorcerer that I've been wanting to play for a while. Two things that I'd like to ask you though:

One, if I went Storm, I was just wondering if I could replace a theme with the Storm Sacrifice feat? There aren't really any good themes otherwise.

Two, do you have any plans on free math fixes or no? I know some DMs typically give a free expertise feat and free melee training. But it seems to be 50/50 in terms of who does and doesn't. I can work with it either way, but it changes how I plan on building the character.

What are free math fixes? Some kind of bonus to compensate sub-par race-choices?

No, I haven't thought about that. Honestly I don't see the necessity. In the end, we are just talking about a 5%-Chance to hit and a single point of damage here. (which are partly compensated by e.g. a higher Constitution).

Sometimes Expertise feats and melee training are given out, just because a lot of the MM3 monsters are more balanced around them is all. They're widely considered as necessary feats to take as you level up, and some DMs just give them out so people get a little more leeway with their character.

Okay, thank you. Now I understand.

I don't like feat-taxes, but I think, making presents doesn't solve the problem. In my tabletop-group, I made the suggestion to disallow them but the players resisted heavily.

Of course, if they are in, everybody wants them.

Alright- here's three different characters for you

Jonn The brawler fighter that picks dudes up and tosses them around

Malklyr The Lyrandar drow sorcerer with the blessing of Arawai.

Medrash The Dragonborn who believes that a spark of Io's power is within him, and is now trying to nurture it to bring back the fallen god.

Full character backstories will come soon, once we figure out which character I should be using.

Dark Archive

What are your thoughts on reflavoring an item to make it match a character? Specifically, if I'm playing a gentleman scholar and want to use a cane, could I have a spear in my equipment list? A combat spear is of a length with a gentleman's cane.

I mostly want to just jab my cane at someone and tell the Fighter, "No, you oaf, hit that one."

As long as the changes are game balanced or no game-technical changes at all, I'm very much okay with everything that helps to bring entertainment into the group.

So feel free to command everybody around! (ingame of course :-) ).

@Berenzen: I like the fighter most! Why is Fort so sky-high? I guess your AC is so low because you didn't equip any armor so far, right? What armor do you plan to use? Scale?

Berenzen::
Just because I noticed: Did you know that your nickname is also the name of a popular german liquor?

Sunshadow here with the character I plan on playing. He'll need to have some adjustments made, but it gives you the basic idea.

Dark Archive

Are we starting off above level 1? If so, are you sure the characters should have only 100 GP in gear?

Also, is Andros going to continue on with the party after Sunshadow takes over?

Changing the level is one thing I need to do. As for him sticking around, I don't know how I'm going to handle that; he'll probably be around in the background in some way, but I haven't decided how or in what capacity.

Dark Archive

If that's the case we/you may want to open up a 6th slot with the understanding that we'll shortly be shy one controller. Unless you'd rather try recruiting a 5th PC when the switch happens (or plan on running for a smaller party).

I'm currently thinking of an Eladrin Gentleman Scholar. I have to investigate Themes, as they were new when last I played 4e. I think I remember there being something fitting for the PC as he's sitting in my head.

The best part of playing a hybrid is that I could make a character that fits two roles.

Fun things I've done in the past:
Tiefling Warlock|Psion, doesn't really shine until end of heroic tier but then turns into a powerhouse when it comes to single target control. Gets even sillier later when Mindblast gets turned into a burst dominate effect.

Half-Elf Bard|Ardent: Melee leader that mainly offers buffs and debuffs. Also offers some melee control via the polearm shenanigans.

Dwarf Runepriest|Fighter: Wrecker with a Mordenkrad. What do you get when you mix a leader and a defender? A striker! One that marks, is durable and hands out buffs every now and then.

Paladin|Warlock: Works with quite a few races, most notably Human and Gnome(though the latter needs to be level 6 orso before working properly). Great defender that keeps granting himself saves on just about every attack and is bound to succeed with high bonuses on them. Actually gets a save when he makes an opportunity attack through a combination of feats and powers.

Personally I think any of the last 3 could fit in here.

If you find anything on themes, post it here. They're new to me as well.

I'd be interested. I haven't had a 4e game in forever and there's just..so many interesting builds you can make in it!
I'd like to play either a Striker or Defender, although if you need a controller i know a couple of builds that work too.

For Striker, I was thinking a Warlock|Assassin(executioner) that will focus on being invisible all the time (eventually).

For Defender, I'd love to try out a Swordmage|Warlock build with all the lockdown, control, and defense pumping those two can bring out.

Edit: Looks like you're covered for defender, having more defenders than strikers tends to lead to slower combats.

Alright, Jonn the brawler it is then. His fort is so high because +5 from strength, +2 from being a fighter, +1 from being a human, +2 from the brawler style. Also, yeah, I forgot to grab scale mail, which will bring him up to an 18 AC.

The reason why I like that fort so high is because with inescapable hold, it makes it very difficult to escape my character's grapples.

And yeah, I realize that my handle is similar to the german liquor company Berentzen.

Hey all.

I have to leave this weekend for work, but I'm really interested in playing in this game. I'm open to any roll. I've got several characters floating around in my head and would love to play any of them. So, whatever roll the group needs, I'm good with it.

Twislemail, since you had expressed interest in playing a Lazylord (Love those btw) I'd like to try out a character build I've been rolling around in my head for awhile. Warlock|Assassin(Executioner) making use of Eldritch Strike (MBA yay!)

Fluff-wise, I'm thinking of a member of House Thuranni. As a Revenant (Eladrin) I figured it'd be okay to re-flavor him as a Dark-magic attuned elf. A pissed off Blood of Vol cultist cursed him somehow, curdling his blood and making him not quite alive, not quite dead.

Crunch

In case anyone didn't notice: sunshadow is the second preselected player. Some really interesting ideas, so far!

I might be interested in this. I have a character in mind, though it still needs some work. A rather foppish young noble by day, gentleman-thief by night.

Dark Archive

I'm glad to see several PCs thus far that'd work swimmingly with the Lazylord I've got in my head. I have to stat him out and post him here at some point. Both Jonn and the Blood of Vol cursee would work well with this particular style of leader.

Cuàn here

Decided on making a hybrid Bard|Warlock Half Elf of House Lyrander focusing on buffing and debuffing as well as movement in order to arrange the battlefield so that the group can (ab)use it properly. The character will also be able to dole out quite some elemental weaknesses in case the party works best with it.

Her Warlock pact will be Elemental, further fitting her being a member of House Lyrander, though she hasn't manifested her dragon mark yet.

As for the last name thing, the Enkiliost family actually is an existing, if obscure, branch of the Lyrander family.

Weird thing is though, for some reason I can't edit this character's profile.

Dark Archive

I've got most of a character statted out at this point. I need to either pay for the character builder again or find a decent 3rd party sheet to make sure I'm doing all of the new stuff correctly. I'm likely going to go with the Noble Theme from Dragon 399.

@Sunshadow; Themes are a lot like Paragon Paths for the heroic tier. They help define your PC a little bit more without adding abundantly to the power of the PC. There are some in Dragons 399, 400, 401, and 402. I'm sure they're elsewhere as well.

So nowhere I can really access them as I have no room in my budget to even consider a DDI subscription right now. And WotC wonders why so few people play 4E. It sounds like once I find an income, I may need to pony up for at least a month just to get caught up.

Instead of the aforementioned Human Rogue, I submit Hans Urian, a Tiefling Sorcerer. I really like his background and he is much easier to play in a pbp because of the smaller number of immediate actions and stuff like that.

If you like I'd put your characters through the character builder and send you the sheet afterwards.

DDI rant:
I actually paid for a month of it just to get an idea for what was on there, and overall, I have to say that while great it theory, I can see why it never really took off as much as WotC would have liked. The character builder isn't bad, but it's not massively spectacular either. I tried to plug in Andros, and I have yet to get it to let me choose the human extra at will power instead of assuming I want the human power from Essentials. The themes are interesting, but I really didn't see any that truly fit; there were a few that came close, but between the lack of primal based and controller based themes, I am not sure which one I will end up using. All in all, I don't regret getting one month's worth of it, but I'd be hard pressed to justify a continued subscription for the majority of the stuff on there; it would be a lot easier if they had gone the route that Herolab did of buy it once, and be able to actually load the programs and files onto my own computer where I can access and use them much, much easier. Like most things 4E, the concept is solid, but the execution just never reached the level needed to sustain itself.

With that off of my chest, I have Andros mostly ready; just need to pin down the feats, and theme. Everything else is pretty much done.

Help with Character Builder:
You can just go to the Race-Button and double-click on the "Heroic Effort". After that you can choose if you want Heroic Effort or the extra at-will power. Heroic Effort is just the default option.

Opinion DDI:
I really like DDI. I find the CB to be easy to use and always up to date. The Compendium is a great help for planning a character. For this Tiefling for example, I just typed "fire Tiefling" into the search line and got a good list of nice options. I am a bit disappointed that the Dungeon and the Dragon lost much of its attractiveness to me. Since Wizards came up with the idea to start a fifth Edition, they do not publish any articles with new game-content anymore. Background-Material yes, but Feats, Paragon Paths, Powers... mostly no.

And here is the final group:

* Andros Firewind, Human Guardian-Druid, Controller played by sunshadow
* "The lazylord", Tactical Warlord, Leader, played by Twilsemail
* Jonn, Human Brawler-Fighter, Defender, played by Berenzen
* Unnamed Bard/Warlock, Hybrid, played by Cuan
* Hans Urian, Tiefling Fire-Elementalist, played by me

Thank you all for submissions!

@all selected: Please complete your characters and provide a character-history.

As soon as the discussion- and gameplay-threads are open, I will post links here.

DDI:
I don't think the individual components are particularly bad in and of themselves, but other programs and systems manage to do the same things as well or better without having the hassle of having to put up with a sometimes frustrating implementation of the whole package. The compendium and character builder are probably the strongest parts of DDI, and the compendium is hard to search for things unless you already know the exact terms needed to search, and the character builder, while not bad, lacks anything that sets it apart from any of it's competition. If the virtual tabletop had gotten off the ground, they would have had a much stronger package that would justify the monthly cost; as it is, I can see why some people like it, but I can see why a lot of people don't at the same time.

I'm thinking I'm simply going to pass on a theme for Andros. I just don't see any that really fit, and I dislike the idea of trying to shoehorn one on simply for the mechanical advantage.

Dark Archive

As we currently have two DMPCs, I'd really like to see one more PC added to the party. We're always going to be 1 PC shy and we're lacking a dedicated striker. DMRaven's proposed revenant seems well fleshed out and fills the role that we're missing. Would the two DMs be terribly opposed to the idea?

I'd be fine with it.

This is the Alias I've created for the Lazylord.

He's going to have been in a Feyspire when they were cut off from the Feywild, digging through their library. Since then, however long that's been in this campaign, he's been absently looking for a way back to the Feywild and more actively looking for a good read.

Once I've solidified the sheet, I'll have a bit more information on who Istyarian is, where he's come from and where he's going.
