I think it had to do with the fact that WOTC wasn't getting the money they were hoping for because their PDFs are being pirated all the way across the planet. I believe the PDF pull was not intended to be permanent, mainly until they decided how they were going to respond to that fact.

If they weren't charging full -dead tree prices for their PDFs there would be far less piracy of them. I for one would (still) love to have legal versions of the WotC 3.5 books. But no way in hell I would pay what they were asking for them.

somehow I kept meaning to post to this thread but kept forgetting...ok ok slapped wrist time I know.

On the Football(American) question all I'm going to say is try being a UK Cowboys fan..(yes ok I admit it, it was the cheerleaders that got me into the supporting the team )

But to get to the point of the thread..Congratulations to everyone at Paizo..you are the light at the end of the long dark tunnel

Stick with soccer instead.

Hang in there, Wellard...I mean just how many more years can Jerry screw things up? Go Cowboys!

First off, I would like to express my thanks to the anonymous person that heard about me losing my job and bought a copy of the core rulebook for me. However, I just realized that the first indication that mine has shipped will be when it shows up in my mail box. I will spend the next week camped out by my mail box pulling my hair out, and I don't have much to spare. What wickedly delightful torture that person has wrought.

Do we love Paizo now because they are the enemy of our enemy? I know some may say that's not it, but I know I certainly feel that way. I feel very bitter towards WoTC and to tell you the truth I really wouldn't care who it was as long as some random company came along and stood up against WoTC and tried to be the underdog, as we all probably feel we are.
I know I don't speak for everybody, but I don't consider WotC "the enemy." The people who work in R&D are intelligent, talented, hard working people who are generally nice guys. Sure, 4E doesn't sit right with me, but the fact is that WotC R&D are not the people who are responsible for the layoffs and other poor business decisions that have helped alienate much of their fan base. I'd hate to see 4E fail because that would mean that a lot of good people would be out of a job. I don't want that. I'm not a fan of what they did with 4E, so I can't exactly support them, but are they the enemy? No way!

I agree with Darrin on this one quite a bit. And my reasons for supporting Paizo are a mix of the two, really.

I was very much for 4e when it was announced, and liked what I saw. It made a lot of design decisions I do support for my style of play. I knew it wasn't for everyone, even then, but it lined up with what I like to do. (Long drawn out adventure days where the heroes fight dozens of monsters in epic almost super heroic fights.)

I didn't like all of it, though, especially when I started seeing things in the rules that made (to me) little IC sense, and seemed to only be there for game balance. Things like the Ranger's animal companion not acting on its own, or the familiars and druid forms unable to manipulate objects.

And then there were the business decisions. The delays and poor launch of DDI, the PDF decision was a big hit for me, too. And I'll also admit that I don't like the recent trend in gaming to nerf casters and overpower melee. (I'm all for balance on this front, but in my opinion it almost feels like a vendetta against wizards.)

All of these things combined and so I decided that maybe... maybe D&D isn't the only game in town. And I went looking for alternatives. I downloaded the Pathfinder Beta, had Staples print it off for me, and bought the first 6 Pathfinder Adventure Paths and read them.

The quality was amazing. I loved it so much. It felt like everything I loved about the AD&D fluff. And the more I read on the setting and the source books and the editorials and the blog... I just love the fluff for everything done here.

And halflings... had furry feet again.

As for 3.5? I still like the system, but I'm not in love with it. In a lot of ways I still prefer 4e, or at least the ideas behind 4e. A lot of what I'm seeing in PfRPG, though, I like! And so I'm supporting Pathfinder as much as I can, because it isn't the core rulebook that has me hooked here, its everything that supports it.

I don't "hate" WOTC, its just they have the privilege of having the first edition of D&D that I have zero interest in supporting. That isn't hate, that is customer prerogative to buy only what they like.

So I buy Paizo, and other companies products. Because I like playing with their products. Maybe WOTC can pick me back up next time around.

I'm already on to other things. Perhaps my post was unclear in that regard. That's doesn't mean I'm full of warm feelings towards a certain company, but there's no need. There's plenty of other places to spread my warm feelings. And, as you say, my money. :)

Sorry, was just commenting on the absence of Robert's last sentence in your quote.

I guess my post was unclear. By quoting Mairkurion, I seemed to imply my advice was directed to Mairkurion, specifically. I only quoted Mairkurion for the New Coke reference.

If I wanted to address my advice to any one user on this thread, it would be jreyst... and even jreyst didn't use the word "hate." Only...

jreyst wrote:

And "feel very bitter towards" is not at all the same thing as "hate." I apologize for the misquote.

Nah, that place is sufficiently trashed. I took the only thing still there worth taking--miniatures. Stupid hobbits took tobacco. Which, as we all know, isn't worth spit after being water-logged.

Err, boss? You said my leaves would grow back after them damn orcs set my head on fire. Still waiting, you know.

Ah. Gotcha. Yea, that was deliberate. There won't be a "next time around" for me. I'm retiring the end of this year / early next year and figure I have about 5 more years of playing before we move to somewhere that DnD playing will be quite limited.

Unless I start up a game in the "Old DnDrs Retirement Home". lol

Have you been remembering to rub it ever night with "Dr Mairkurion's Miraculous Restorative Unguent"? It doesn't seem to me that you've bought near enough supply for it to have been faithfully administered.

Yeah, I guess my wording wasn't the greatest, but it was meant in good humor.

I'm several years from retireing, but I know I'd sign up for that!

Oh and I note that Amazon UK is now showing September 2nd as the probable delivery date for the Core rules..don't you just love their ultra efficient distribution system?

That's two days faster than Amazon US.

Yeah, Jerry's priced things out of my range. Especially if I am to implement my subscription expansion program.

I notified my FLGS about the Pathfinder RPG Core Book sellout in part to make sure my pre-order had gone through. Well, last night we met for our weekly Savage World game and he dropped a bombshell: nine of the 10 books he had ordered for the 13th were not only pre-ordered, but his distributor said forget about getting any more until the next printing. ;-)

Well, you see... Money's been a little tight with me spending it on Paizo stuff. Any chance you could advance me some? I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for some Dr Mairkurion's Miraculous Restorative Unguent today.

Ooo...I'd been expecting a check from Sebastian's internet revenues, but somehow, it keeps being delayed. All my old inventory is spoken for, and I can't brew up more until that check comes in. Maybe you better just put the hair regrowth project on hold for a while.

Speaking as somebody who came to Paizo after the epochal events you allude to, I feel I can say, if you come for the hate, you stay for the love. If you'll allow me a prediction, you'll start to feel better. (So funny. A friend I was talking to just last night made the same "New Coke" comment.)

I'll offer some unasked-for advice: don't waste time and energy hating.

I have long said that sooner or later, some edition of D&D will go the way of New Coke. (In fact, in a casual conversation, I once compared Windows Vista to New Coke.) No one can get it right EVERY time. Perhaps 4th Edition will be that edition, and perhaps it won't. But whichever edition goes that way, I hope that WotC (or whoever owns D&D by that time) will be able to admit to its mistakes (something many people find difficult to do), learn from them, and emerge stronger than ever for the experience.

More to the point (for me, anyway) is their PDF downloads. When WotC pulled the plug on those, I was horrified. I still regret not buying more of those old Mystara materials when I had the chance. But though I felt horror and regret, I didn't waste my energy hating. I promptly bought a slew of other RPG materials... published by three RPG companies other than WotC. If a company doesn't want my money, I go elsewhere. That's all.

You should have stopped at:

You could call it Pleasant Grognard Meadows.

If I ever go into a home of some sort in my late years, and I CAN'T find enough people to play D&D, I will continue to poison their applesauce and make tomato leaf salads until there ARE enough fellow gamers.

Once relatively infirm, I can't think of many things I'd like to do OTHER than game!

Even with Viagra and hoors.

Just then, the retired gamers are roused by a frightened peasant. "Good sirs, we need your help. The village is being overrun by orcs."

The retired gamers respond with disinterest, until...

The peasant adds, "And the orcs are on your lawn!"

Weapons are drawn. Spells are readied. The adventure begins.
