On Paizochat the other day I ran into Sebastian and we came up with a rough idea which I though was worth throwing out and seeing if it sticks.

I bump into a good number of you folks at Paizocon, then we keep loosely in touch for the rest of the year. Here, in chat, Facebook, FAWTL... where-ever. Anyhow, I (and Pony boy to an extent) thought it would be cool to get a group together and play a group of characters at Paizocon... then the idea grew a bit. Perhaps we could organize a few online games so we'd have a bit of a head start and we could play 2nd or 3rd level characters as a group.

I'm not a huge fan of online play but I think with the right crew and pointed at a worthy goal (socializing and hooking up at Paizocon) we could make it work.

The plan (what there is of it) would be roughly one game a month hopefully scheduled at a time where we could all meet. We would progress together as much as possible and have a session or two at Paizocon or maybe pre-Paizocon if anyone wants to show early.

Agaaain... really rough idea, I'm just kind of feeling it out. I also don't think it needs to be limited to folks who will make it to Paizocon but I'd like to pace it so a group of us can play together there.

Comments?

Would this game be done via chat, or via PbP? In any case, I'm almost certainly in.

To be honest I think that falls into the TbD part of this whole thing. I was loosely planning on doing it using Pygon's excellent (but sadly windows only) TTop app or maptools but just straight chat or PbP would work.

PbP would have to be at a solid pace though to keep up. It's also possible we could do both, a PbP and a 'live' online game. The tricky bit would be keeping the two roughly at the same level. Also, the idea is they would a sort of team... hmm.

Too...many... acronyms...

Must have been a mood

The answer is I don't know yet. (To be Determined)

Andoran (RPG Superstar 2012)

I like the idea!

But...but....internet cookies (Lilith's, and the kind that stuff IE) aren't as filling as real table top snacking! We'd have to provide our own!!!

Hehe. Sounds like a cool idea.

Qadira (Paizo Charter Superscriber)

Interesting idea. I have some spare PFS characters that have yet to be fleshed out beyond names and loose concepts. Would love a chance to get one of them rolling.

Andoran (Paizo Charter Superscriber, Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber)

I'd like to play, too!

I've been interested in trying out one of the online play options, and I want to built up one or two PFS characters for use at PaizoCon.

Cheliax (Bella Sara Charter Superscriber)

Even though I floated a variant on the idea, I can't commit to online play. :-(

My original concept was slightly different from Ogre's plan, but his version is probably the better way to implement it for those interested. My thought was for a group of us to form an actual adventuring party of 1st level characters prior to showing up at PaizoCon. The characters would all know each other from their days in the Pathfinder Lodge, where they became friends and decided to adventure together. They'd also be built to compliment each other (e.g., we wouldn't want a party with 4 arcane casters, a monk, and a bard.)

At PaizoCon 2011, we'd play the characters through a few adventures, and develop them a little more.

After PaizoCon 2011, we'd play the characters either online or in other PFS adventures.

At PaizoCon 2012, we'd reunite the adventuring party (assuming their levels aren't too disparate) and have them relate their experiences since they last adventured together.

We could call them the Order of the Board. Or something like that. I'm bad at naming stuff.

Either way, it still sounds like fun. Besides, I'm in San Diego and expect to be stationed here at least until the middle of 2012. My schedule is still a little iffy as to when I'll be traveling, etc.

I should be able to work out a tabletop game once in awhile and I'm still interested in online play to try out maptools or TTop or whatever. (In fact, I'm also interested in trying d20Pro, since that had direct HeroLabs support, too.)

EDIT: I also like the name "Order of the Board"...makes me think of Order of the Stick...only thicker.

I have to admit that the idea of starting the characters at Paizocon and having them reunite is pretty damned cool. For some reason I hadn't thought about it in exactly those terms.

Only problem for me... that is way too much delayed gratification. I mean seriously what could we do about your idea NOW? huh? I thought not.

Maybe we just create and develop the characters here on the boards then plan to have them "re-united" at Paizocon? We could post regular updates on the forum about our adventures.

The biggest issue one way or the other would be keeping up. If you can't play online could you play PFS IRL enough to keep up? I think a good pace would be averaging one game per month.

Cheliax (Bella Sara Charter Superscriber)

For now, we can focus on building the characters. We could form a new thread for the Order of the Board and start getting people to create their PCs.

I hear you on wanting to level up - there's a chance I might be able to do some PFS IRL play to stay current. That said, I liked the idea of having the characters be brand new at PaizoCon. That way, if we were missing a player, it'd be easy to build a new character and slot them in. Plus, I think it'd provide some additional cohesion to the party.

FWIW Order of the Board is a cool enough name.

I talked to Sebastian on chat and we came up with a rough idea. We would form a group of academy graduates who formed a tight bond even to the point of naming themselves.

The IRL guidelines would be along the lines of targeting a tier 1-5 adventure at Paizocon 2011 with no-one in the group over third level. The idea is to form a group that is bound to each other somehow, I like the idea of having them bound by more than just a graduating year but that might be it.

I'll get a thread up in the gamer connection forum tomorrow where we can start talking about character concepts and whatnot. After we figure out who is going to be what we'll make a forum for in-character development and corresponding.

Online play will likely be one part of this but I'm starting to think an optional one.

One final thing... while the point is to have the group meet up at Paizocon if that's not feasible but just want to get involved with the crew you are welcome to join in.

Love the idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am totally down with this. I can't wait.

Could you post a link to the gamer connection thread when you've put it up?

Cheliax (Bella Sara Charter Superscriber)

I'm glad others like the idea. Feel free to pitch in thoughts. I think Ogre's going to make a new thread for it some time this weekend. He has a lot of society experience, and should be able to help those of us (like me) who have no idea how living campaigns work.

Paris Crenshaw wrote:

It looks like the name is sticking (no pun intended)...

Are you planning to go Paizocon again in 2011, Paris? Any ideas on what you would want to play? It'd be an alignment violation for me to play a non-chelexian, so I'm thinking a Chelixian human rogue. Or maybe a dwarven monk.

We should definitely have a healer of some type. And a front line.

CJ, Shiney, taig, et al - are any of you planning to make it to PaizoCon? Do you want to build a character.

We will have to figure out what to do if we have more than six people. It'd be neat to have more than one party if we get enough people, but still have the characters inter-relate.

Qadira (Paizo Charter Superscriber)

I'm planning to make a roadtrip of it with 5 or so other Houstonians, so if all goes well I'll make it this year.

My current roster of unplayed society characters consists of a Dwarf Monk, Human Barbarian and Gnome Sorcerer. I could run with any of those or come up with something new to fill a need. I'm flexible like that.

I don't know if Moorluck is planning on going or not, but last year, we were thinking of creating Pathfinder-ized versions of the brothers from 'Boondock Saints,' and using them in a Society scenario.

Hey! I called dibs on dwarf monk!

Andoran (Paizo Charter Superscriber, Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber)

I fully intend to be at PaizoCon 2011. As always, there may be barriers to that, but I'll be there if I can.

As for what kind of character...I'll have to give it some thought. It may depend on how we decide our characters are connected.

That's always the chicken and egg, isn't it. I'm leaning towards the dwarven monk. If you played a dwarf, our characters could be from the same clan. Or there's always the option of just knowing each other from the academy. It looks like we could still use a healer, artillery, or arcane caster.

Bah. Fine be that way. I still have options. Inquisitor is another I'm interested in playing, but I want to save that for a Carrion Crown AP.

And of course there are so mant Archetypes that I want to dabble with...

Yeah, I have options you Dwarf monk hoarder. :p

Depends on the PC overall. I'm admittedly biased towards Qadira, but I wouldn't mind a different flavor to my faction missions. Taldor seems to get a lot of fun ones.

Cheliax (Bella Sara Charter Superscriber)

Hmmm...how are these stats? I'm shooting for mobility and support, not raw damage. I want to be able to provide flanks and such. I'm probably going to put ranks into stealth, acrobatics, and perception. I need to figure out if the mobility feats require a 13 int still. Is wis very important for a monk?

STR: 14 DEX: 15 CON: 16 INT: 13 WIS: 12 CHA: 8

Qadira (Paizo Charter Superscriber)

You get Wis bonus to AC, CMD and Ki pool, so yeah it's something to keep in mind. Combat Expertise requires 13 Int, but I think that's it.

Hmmm...I think I'm game for either healer or arcane caster. Maybe a dwarven cleric or oracle...lemme look at things and get back to you.

I don't think we need to do the same faction, it would certainly make the faction mission for that scenarios trivial but it can certainly make it's own kind of sense.

Think of them as political parties almost, the players could even argue about who has made the best choices and why their host country is clearly the superior. We could have long winded faction debates in the Society Forums... or wait...

I'll do a melee class. Human or Half-orc, leaning towards Barbarian right now, but maybe Ranger or Fighter.

I agree - no sense in all being the same faction.

Any thoughts on what you would play Ogre?

I remember there being talk about one of us being a fighter and the other a rogue, but it's still up in the air.

Andoran (Paizo Charter Superscriber, Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber)

Okay, I'm looking at a dwarven oracle of life with the tongues (Terran) curse and the "safe cures" revelation, with the additional channel revelation via the extra revelation feat.

Terlek Finndstrom (name is tentative)
STR: 12, DEX: 14, CON: 12, INT: 10, WIS: 12, CHA: 15

I can see him being good in the healer/caretaker role for his monk brother.

OotS 'charter'

Let me know if you think there should be some changes.

Try and use this thread for talking about concept and that thread for gaming related issues.

Qadira (Paizo Charter Superscriber)

Ragnar Rock
Human Barbarian (Superstitious)
Str: 17 Dex: 14 Con: 14 Int: 12 Wis: 12 Cha: 9
Faction: Cheliax
Yes, my organized play PCs tend to have punny names. Hope that doesn't bug anyone too much.

I also have a couple other ideas in the works, so don't carve this one in stone until we get a game under our belts.

My chances of making it with limited funds right now are slim. I do plan on doing so one of the years, I love doing stuff in Seattle and it has been years since I was there. Took the underground tour. Still have the hat.

I like the idea, I just don't know that if I could find a society game close enough for me to actually get gaming in frequently. I like an idea of a bard or a skill heavy rouge. I am needing help to come up with a concept. It's been so long since I have actually played and feel a little rusty.

Do you think you can make some online games? Not very many.

There is a good guide out there for making bards, I've never really built one myself.

Edit: Bard guide Though I must say it's much more detailed then you will need to worry about.

I would be able to make online games. Now my mind is debating a bard, a rogue, or a hand to hand fighter. Arghhhh too many choices

Pcs is very melee heavy... Much more than typical home groups. At cons or in game shop games you wind up bumping elbows with other characters trying to get into fights. The last game I played in my summonses eidolon would up sitting out a com at or two to give the strait melee guys some breathing room. For this reason I think bards are pretty cool in pfs you always get a big group of people benefiting from your song and skills are very nice in society play. Our group is a good bit different but if you are planning on playing at a con outside this group it's something to keep in mind.

Rangers, also tend to do well in pfs because they can do both ranged combat and melee and they have a lot of good skills.

Bards are everyones best friend.

An Andoran Dwarven rogue skilled explorer could be interesting.

Hey thanks for the input. my other problem is I read the guide to PFS play, but still lost on the regions, factions, and a lot of Golarion background.

Woodraven wrote:

Don't feel that your region of origin has to be tied to your faction. Pick a faction that you like and be 'recently' from that area. Your origin can still be from a totally different geographical area.

For instance, if you really want to be Qadira faction, but want your PC to be Chelaxian it's not a problem to say he traveled east looking for adventure and profit.

Exactly. My character is Chelaxian but his faction is Taldori. Factions can be picked for any number of reasons and many regions don't even have a faction.

So I could be from Nirmathas and be Andoran faction.

Hhmmmm......
