Speaking with Mr. Z earlier
Having found paper and pen inside the library aboard the hut, while studying a peculiar language called ‘russian’ Einar makes a small list and give it to Mr. Z.

Spurnholm
Einar enjoys the journey back to Sprnholm with Taslune keeping the plum wine flowing. The final night at Spurnholm, he enjoys the company of old and new friends feasting on the icerunners, and the deapfried meat and vegetables with a kick of sweet chilis. Telling his friend Taslune, ”If I can return to this place I will try and look you up!”

with Zilvazaraat
When Zilvazaraat arrives with Einars items, Einar opens the pouch, seeing the ioun stones and a few other items, he smiles, and gives Zilvazaraat the agreed upon price. ”Nice, very nice, I look forward to doing business with you again.”

Now
After checking with Mister Whiskers and Crummock, Einar fetches the two-headed bird and the bearskin then stuffs them both in the cauldron. As the room shifts, and Einar regains his equilibrium he sees the dozens of cages, at the same time hearing the few remaining survivors speak in the language he had been studying. Not recognizing all the words or sounds, he turns to the others. ”I do not understand all they are saying, does anyone else understand? It sounds like they are speaking in riddles.”

While the team speak of their options Einar searches he room for anything of value and finally checks the door. First looking and listening carefully. Then checking it with the ring. ”Don’t want to use this too much, but as dangerous as Baba Yaga’s hut has been no need to take any chances.”

Einar steps away from the door, nodding toward the room, ”Walls are covered with candy and sweets, all of it poison, it’s a trap well enough, Any ideas>”

The trap is basically a suggestion spell. Fail that will save, and you go eat candy. Which is cool, since everyone loves candy, don't they? ;-)

Puzzled, Mr. Whiskers listens a few times. Wait, is that how it is pronounced? Having only read it, I never realized that!

After a few repetitions, Mr. Whiskers says "I think they are speaking Russian...one of the languages I only came across in the hut's library."

He then proceeded to translate it for the others.

"We need to help them...they look like they haven't eaten properly in...well, much too long!"

When the trap is explained, Mr. Whiskers reaches into his pack and brings out some earplugs. "These plus purify food? I can't cast that spell, but others can."

'Feed them, why not.' Einar turns from the door, going to his pack he takes out some of the dry rations he has stored, "I guess we can feed them some of the trail rations. But do you think it will upset Baba Yaga?" Einar then splits a day's ration between the nine little men. "Not to much to start with." He then lets each drink water out of the ceramic jug. yeah, he filled it up but hadn't turned it yet.

After describing the trap to the war band, he asks, "How do we get to it without succumbing to the poison?"

I'd say earplugs will give +2 to the save. Was looking more on the line of protection against evil so you cant be, you know, compelled to..eat candy

That would be a better plan, yes. I hadn't thought of it. I did think of a few other things and discarded them.

"Baba-yaga ne khochet nas. Na etoy proklyatoy zemle net mesta dlya nas. Bol'she zhit' nel'zya." They stare blankly at Einar and the proferred food.

Russian:

Baba yaga doesn't want us. There is no where on this cursed earth left for us. There is nothing more to live for.

"Ne khotite, chtoby vy? Net mesta dlya zhizni?" Einar asks the caged guys. Turning back to Mister Whiskers, "Did you get that part about cursed dirt or something?" Einar waves the jerky again, tearing a small piece off and putting it in his mouth, seeing if any of the caged guys will reach out for it once they see it's edible. 'I forget how good dried beef is.'

Russian:
"Not want you? No place to live?"

Russian:

There is nothing for us. Everytime a mortal says they don't believe in faeries, one of us dies. We asked Baba Yaga to take us in and promised to serve her faithfully. She imprisoned us here and left us to die.

'I'm not sure, I'm just not sure, I should have just let Crummock do all the talking.' Trying to listen to the little guy, looking to Mister Whiskers he asks "did they say they are faries, can you tell what kind?" Then looking hen back to the one that was speaking. "Vy ostavili zdes' umirat'? Vy znayete, kuda ona poshla? Ona mozhet pozvolit' nam vzyat' tebya s soboy. Net zakonov protiv togo, chtoby byt' fey, otkuda my rodom."

Russian:
Left you here to die? do you know where she went? She may let us take you with us. There are no laws against being fey where we come from.

'Forsaken son?' Einar looks from Mister Whiskers and then to Crummock and Seraphina, "Do you understand them, Baba Yaga has a son here that she went to see." Remembering that Mister Whiskers said they were creatures like Hatch. Einar begins to open the cage of the speaker. "Po nashey vneshnosti vy mozhete skazat', chto my ne otsyuda. Chto vy mozhete rasskazat' nam ob etom meste? Yesli vy mozhete byt' nashimi provodnikami v etom mire, my mozhem vernut' vas k nashemu. Vy ne byli by tam odni, vashi dobryye tam tozhe zhivy."

Russian:
You can probably tell by our appearance that we are not from here. What can you tell us about this place? If you can be our guides in this world we can take you back to ours. You would not be alone there, your kind lives there as well.

"Malen'kiy Otik vsegda goloden. Kukla Vasilly sluzhit yey vechnym nakazaniyem za pomoshch' Vasile. Sama smert' okhranyayet vorota." They mutter distractedly in a sing-song voice, and make no attempt to leave their cages even after Einar opens the door.

Russian:

Little Otik is always hungry. Vasilla's doll serves her eternal punishment for helping Vasilla. Death itself guards the gate.

Unbelievable, well at least I can test the glasses I got from Z' Shaking his head, he adjusts his rose colored glasses to see how healthy the fey were. Then walking toward the fire place he tells the others, "One of you try and talk to them."

Heading to the fire place he carefully steps around he flames and realizing he can crawl through it attempts to do so without burning himself. Jumping back from the flame that singed his arm. 'Blast I expected my fire proof skin to be able to resist that.'

Fragile status for domovoi.

Thick vines and tendrils of ivy twist and writhe over every surface of this overgrown cottage room. The room is furnished with cluttered tables and stuffed cabinets, but with ivy writhing through every nook. More disturbingly, the vines support dozens of withered humanoid and animal corpses, their desiccated forms sucked dry of all life and vitality.

There is an obese filthy creature resembles a huge, wide-mouthed fat child made from leaves, vines, tree bark, dirt, and pallid tubers, accompanied by 4 gnarled vines, as thick as a man's arm and bearing hand-shaped leaves, like a king in his throne room, attended by his courtiers.

Besides the fireplace the party came from, there are two exits from the room, one blocked by the obese, filthy creature, an open doorway filled with vines, and the second a worn, upright travel trunk overgrown with vines and filled with dirty clothing and rags in the southern portion of the room.

It looks at Crummock, while salivating, and licking its barky lips. "Da, da. YA tozhe khochu vernut' svoyu mamu. Ona kormit menya takimi vkusnymi ..." It also gives Crummock a calculative look.

Russian:

yes, yes. I want my Mother back too. She feeds me such delicioussss...

Crummock and Mr Whiskers realize that if they don't feed Little Otik soon, they could end up next on the menu!

'that is not pretty.' Einar watches the large baby carefully, almost understanding what it is saying. He whispers to Crummock. "I'm usually not one to say anything, but I don't think that things parents thought this out."

So saying, Crummock pulls out Yrax's head (which he has been casting Purify Food and Drink on every morning to keep it 'fresh'), and tosses it to Little Otik.

"Не хотите ли свежую воду?"

Russian:
"Would you like some fresh water to go with that?"

If the answer is yes, Crummock will use Create Water.

I still have the claws and femur, so I am not especially broken-up about losing the head ;-)

He then turns to the others.

"We should probably keep moving..."

As Little Otik falls voraciously upon Yrax's head, between gulps he says, "Da, i ty sil'no otlichayesh'sya ot moikh shib. U menya yest' mladshaya sestra, koroleva s ledyanym serdtsem. Ona dala tolstyy vkusnyy kozel svoyemu mladshemu bratu, chernoborodomu monakhu. No ona nichego mne ne dala!!"Before long, he has gobbled down the head, and starts yelling, "Bol'she! Bol'she!"

Russian:

Yes and you are very different from my sibilings. I have a youunger sister who is a queen with a heart of ice. She gave a fat tasty goat to her little brother, a black-bearded monk. But she didn't give me anything!
More! More!

Then he starts salivating at the party again, while looking at them greediy.

As the party starts squeezing into the wardrobe, they hear Little Otik pouting and throwing a tantrum behind them. "Day mne bol'she yedy, ponyal? Dayte mne yeshche ili ya s"yem vsekh vas!"

Russian:

Give me more food, you get it? Give me more food or I'll eat you up!

As the party comes out of the filthy wardrobe, they see a single candle atop a wooden table to the northeast illuminating this cluttered hexagonal room, though a hint of sunlight kisses the sill of a single window on the western wall from beneath heavy curtains. The only sound is the creaking of loose floorboards and the groan of aged walls. A single door, tightly barred with a hammered iron bar and a stout lock, stands in the eastern walls.

The furnishings in this room are nothing more than the accumulated clutter common to any such rustic hut: hanging cured ham hocks, filthy dishes a stove, disused farming implements and long-dry clothing hanging from lines stretched across the chamber. There is a fireplace in the southwestern walls, that looks like it could be crawled into (the usual 1d6 fire damage), that leads somewhere else.

Einar, Crummock, and Seraphine all realize that their shadows are missing, and distorted shadows are coming to life!

Not that I think it mattered with your rolls, but Mr. Whiskers and Greta have Mage Armor which is effective against incorporeal creatures.

I found the link to Book 5 on my campaign page. Could you please put it in your header as well?

Being crowded on all sides, Mr. Whiskers attempts to cast haste defensively.

’Nasty, why did we leave that alive?’ Climbing into the trunk behind Crummock, Einar asks him. ”How long till you think baby boy will try and eat one of us?”

Once out of the trunk and into the room, Einar looks about, dragging his fingers across the table as he heads to the door with the lock on it. ’Not so different than where many of my father’s thralls lived.’ Not noticing he shadow until it move toward him swiping him with it’s talons, sending cold shivers down his spine. Turning to the ‘shadow demon’ Einar rages, his cambion ancestry becoming obvious, ”Bad choice, you should have stayed in the shadows and let us pass.” He steps to the side, then draws his sword and slashes at the creature.

Haste: 5 ft. step, Move action: Draws + 1 ghost touched longsword. attack:rage’s large (AC 24) PA, FF,

@Mr Whiskers: The map is linked up on top of the gameplay thread. Unfortunately, there is nowhere that you can 5' step to, and not provoke...

Crummock frowns.

"Na na wnewch hyn, byddwch yn ychydig o cachu! Dyro i mi yn ôl fy cysgod!"

"No you, don't, you little gobshite! Give me back my shadow!"

He then (defensively) casts a spell.

Dismissal. DC 23 Will save, or get sent back to the Abyss. If it passes the save, I will use Divine Interference to make it re-roll (sacrificing a 6th level spell slot to make sure that it happens).

Spell Resistance: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28.
Incorporeal 'Miss Chance' (High = success): 1d100 ⇒ 75.

Meanwhile, Geist attempts to help Greta.

I found the link in the gameplay thread. I would like if the link from GM Mort's profile that appears just below his name were updated to Book 5. I find that link more accessible.

Suddenly, they all rise up, and make a mad dash, with 3 of them ducking around Greta, supernaturally quickly(240 fly speed), into the fireplace(leads to A7).

Einar cuts into his shadow demon, hard, and it looks like it's just a sliver left.

Then they are gone.

A small chest in the room contains six potions of cure serious wounds and 2500 gold pieces.

Flickering flames peer from the hollow eyes of hundreds of skulls piled in this dark chamber. A doll lies crucified on a wooden table against the east wall of the room, pinned there with four crooked, rusty nails; its dress is torn and its delicate frame marred by hundreds of tiny cuts and burns. Einar sees the crucified doll limply straining at its bonds before again falling still.

Einar knows that pulling out any nails that pin the doll down will trigger a firestorm trap. But it's easy enough to disable this trap, just tinker a little with those skulls.

After Einar manages to pry the iron bar out and pick the lock, the party walks into another room, with a weird feeling in their stomach as if they have just been teleported.

Flickering flames peer from the hollow eyes of hundreds of skulls piled in this dark chamber. A doll lies crucified on a wooden table against the east wall of the room, pinned there with four crooked, rusty nails; its dress is torn and its delicate frame marred by hundreds of tiny cuts and burns. Crummock, Einar and Seraphine know that pulling out any nails that pin the doll down will trigger a firestorm trap. But it's easy enough to disable this trap, just tinker a little with those skulls.

Mr Whiskers recognizes the doll as a soulbound doll. This one needs to be fed to be animated.

There are 3 exits to the room. One is the way the party came from, another via a lit fireplace, and yet another, by climbing into one of the coffins.

The party is still shadowless, after their shadows have been stolen away.

'Their running now?' Surprised that the shadows choose to run, Einar slashes at his as it flees. Using the ring a second time Einar shakes his head, "This place keeps getting weirder and weirder."

As he pries the iron bar and picks the lock, Einar, sword in hand, opens the door and asks. "Who creates a doll and then tortures and crucifies it?" seeing the doll straining at it's bonds he asks, "Do we free it? And who the blazes is Vasilisa?" He then walks over to Mister Whiskers and asks, "If we don't trust the doll, would the shackles we found shrink to fit it?"

hey Mort would the shackles we found at the beginning shrink to fit the doll?

Yes they would. Problem is they work for humanoids, not constructs like the doll is.

Is there a reason I didn't get an AoO? They were threatening me and I have a magical spiked gauntlet so I can also always be threatening. If I do get an AoO, it would go against the most hurt one.

Watching the shadow demons flee, Mr. Whiskers asks "Will the house spirits be alright? I hope the demons aren't attacking them now."

I wonder why the demons fled, and if this just means we will have to deal with them again later.

"The doll has a soul in it, remember? Someone evidently thought just creating the doll wasn't punishment enough."

Pondering for a moment, he looks to Greta. "You've spent as much or more time than I in the library. Do you think we could find anything about Vasilisa in there?"

Is there some sort of roll we could do to know if we had come across the name?

In answer to Einar's question, he says "They would work as manacles. The doll's mind is different enough that the enchantments to make the wearer compliant would have no effect on it."

Mr Whiskers AOO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Mr Whiskers does not manage to punch any shadow demons.

Mr Whiskers knowledge local: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Greta knowledge local: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Mr Whiskers can't remember anything, but Greta does.

"Why yes, I do remember reading a tale about Vasilla. Apparently she got the better of Baba Yaga with the help of her doll, and married a rich Tsar after. I believe it was one of those Russian folk tales." Greta replies to Mr Whiskers query. "Also that that doll was given to Vasilla on her mother's death, and her mother said she would always watch over her..."

"How about we talk with it before destroying it?" he says.

"I'm sure we don't have complete information, but it almost sounded like the mother created the doll to protect her child."

He isn't a fan of keeping trapped souls. Bring it up in character and I will explain.

'the mother protected the daughter with the doll?' Einar looks from one smarter friend to the other, of course I think the white wolf may be smarter than Einar. "Is it possible the mother put her own soul into the doll? If that is the case, and her mouther was a witch or wizard, would the doll have the mothers powers?"

Looking to Einar, Mr. Whiskers says "I was wondering something like that as as well. If the mother did put her soul into the doll, it sounds like it was in order to protect her daughter."

Thinking a moment, Mr. Whiskers then says "Let me see what I can determine about the doll."

He then stares at the doll and starts reciting what he can see.

Spellcraft: 10 + 23 = 33
Kn: Arcana + Heigthened Awareness: 10 + 23 + 2 = 35
I also spend a standard action to tell if it is a spell caster and type.

"And if the transfer was done...lets say, hastily, most of the individuality of the soul in question would be gone."

'I'm getting tired of this, if we don't like it we can kill it.' Einar shrugs looking at Greta and Seraphina, then smiling. "Not like we haven't worked with a few odd folks since we got started." He then releases the doll from the crucifixion table, and offers it some of the same jerky he offered to the caged little men. "Try this if your are hungry."
