For the Glory of the Veskarium! Docking Bay 3-3

Attending to various matters around the grounds of Grand Lodge, the sunlight wanes as the day nears its end. Returning to the Grand Lodge of Absalom is usually a flurry of activity catching up on the latest news and reports from all over the Inner Sea and across Golarion, catching up with other Pathfinders, and occasionally visiting the Wall to remember those who will never return.

Returning to the dormitory halls for the evening, you are approached by a small, wiry grey-skinned woman dressed in studded leather and a hat adorned with several brightly colored feathers. Her long, slender fingers holds out a flat envelope, its wax seal bearing the Glyph of the Open Road. "Chào buổi tối, xin vui lòng chấp nhận thông báo này từ Ambrus Valsin.*"

Wayang:

"Good evening, please accept this message from esteemed Chamberlain of the Grand Lodge Ambrus Valsin."

After a moment she shakes her head, slapin herself on the forehead, and in broken common says, "Well eve Pathfinder fellows. Venture Valsin has message to you."

Letter:

Pathfinder, I hope this message finds you well. Please join me at my office in Skyreach Tower following breakfast the morning of Oathday 26 Rova, 4714, I have an important opportunity to discuss with you.
--Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin
That would be tomorrow morning.

Please take a moment to introduce yourself and/or dot the thread before we start the mission briefing.

A tall and rather thin man stands before you. In all respects, he appears to be a demon with large horns and small, atrophied wings on his back, but his quiet voice eases any initial tension:

Greetings pathfinders, my name is Malus. I am just returned from assisting in our forray into the Sky Citadel Jormurdun; it appears that there is little time for rest in the life of a pathfinder of late...

Dressed in simple, dark clothing, he is festooned with small bags and a backpack, a bandolier, and carrying a buckler and combat cestus. You seem to have some difficulty ascertaining his chosen combat specialty. A tiny, vicious-looking flying dinosaur rests on his shoulder, its eyes quickly darting to each individual as they enter the room.

"Well met Malus...well met. I am called Thaddaeus; but Thad will suffice if that's easier coming off of the tongue for you. What a splendid journey you've just returned from. Splendid indeed." The Eagle Knight seems to be a fair bit full of himself; but its hard not to be enraptured by his enthusiasm.

The small, but proud halfling saunters before you all and takes a bow. "Greetings commoners. I am Marquis Ozymandias, representative of the Sovereign Court, and proud member of the Lion Blades."

He rises from his bow with a small smile and stands in such a way that makes his gaudy clothing very obvious. He graciously accepts the letter and gives a smile to the gray skinned woman, "Why thank you."

The giggling is not to miss.
A happily humming gnome enters the room, wearing a leather armor that is barely recognizable, full of paint in all the colors of the rainbow.
This extends to the hair and even the eyebrows.
Hu hu hello! Call me Koemi, that´s said Ko-a-me. Desna´s and Lalaci´s belssings, eh blessings to you, as well as Ashea´s.
She blinks at the halfling.
Then looks at the small grey creature, gasping.

Wooohhh! What happend to you? You got the bleaching? You need some color, desperately! I can help you!
She begins to fumble out some pots of paint and brushes.

Iason tilts his head at the message and the unusual messenger. He bows slightly to the gray-skinned woman, opens the message, and reads it silently.

"Thank you," he says to the messenger, then turns to his fellow field agents with an appraising look.

He's a human of average height, dressed in plain, well-worn chain shirt and sturdy traveling clothes, with a a battered pack upon his back. A few things stand out about him-- the fair skin and red hair common to Ulfens and other northerners, although this man seems to be quite civilized and well-groomed, unlike most Ulfens; the black traveling cloak he wears with symbols of Asmodeus etched along the hem; and the minor issue of a faintly glowing pentagram upon his brow. There's a morningstar looped to his belt, and a crossbow slung over the other shoulder.

Behind him, silent and hulking, trails... something. The figure is vaguely manlike-- two legs, two arms-- but details are hard to make out beneath a floor-length cloak and hooded cowl that obscures most everything about the figure. It's a large figure, powerful frame hinted at by the robe. In the shadows of the hood, one can make out two red pinpricks of light where one might see eyes.. and an echo of the rune on the man's forehead.

"Well met," says the man, with a tip of his head towards the others. "It appears we are all being summoned? I am Iason Blaise, a citizen of Imperial Cheliax." He pauses, taking in Malus's appearance and arching a single brow at Ozymandias's greeting naming them all as 'commoners' (sigh, Taldans), and then he continues, "...and this is my bodyguard, Etrigan. Please avoid touching him, thank you."

He peruses the message once more, then turns polite inquiry upon Malus. "Jormurdun? Really? I regret I was busy here in the city during that incident, but half the lodges have been full of gossip about it. I should love to hear details from someone who was there."

The figure behind him keeps its peace.

Oz quickly shifts out the way when he sees the symbols of Asmodeus, trying his best not to stare. The Chelaxians weren't known for being very friendly to his people, doubly so for worshipers of Asmodeus... triply so for devil summoning worshippers of Asmodeus and indeed, I have no knowledge planes, so for all Oz knows, the eidolon can easily be a devil. Eying Iason warily, but the creature even more so, he patted his scimitar out of habit and breathed easy. Maybe this man was one of those rare NICE Chelaxians, who didn't like taking noble halflings hostages and trading them into slavery.

At the wary scurrying of the Marquis, Iason merely smiles a faint, sardonic smile.

"Is something amiss, your lordship?" he enquires in his most urbane tones.

(He decides to simply ignore the gnome attempting to paint the messenger. Gnomes, Iason long ago decided, are simply one of those vexatious facts of life, like summer colds, or horseflies, that are best endured by pretending they do not inconvenience you at all.)

Oz does not respond directly to Iason, muttering in hushed tones to himself, though you are able to catch bits of his speech.
"Society sending ... and they put me on a mission with a damned Chel ... Sarenrae's light, they ought to have a good explanation ..."

After getting over his initial shock, Oz decides that at some point, he will make an effort to convert this Chelaxian and help him see Sarenrae's light. After all, if he, a former Aspis Consortium assassin could change his ways, so could a devil summoner.

Insufferable Chelaxian? You're talking to the insufferable Taldan. I certainly do hope that Thaddeus is an insufferable Andoran, THEN we will have a party!

Iason studies his fingernails. "I have always found it odd," he remarks to Malus and Thaddeus, "that the Taldan nobility places such high stock on etiquette, and yet, sometimes they cannot deign to even pay the courtesy of answering a question from a fellow agent. It is regrettable. Master... Thaddeus, was it?-- I note the insignia of your proud membership in the Eagle Knights of Andoran.

"While our countries are political rivals and cannot be said to be 'friends', I trust that you, at least, will recall our mutual training as Pathfinder agents and, therefore, you will be able to put petty national rivalries and philosophical disagreements aside in the name of exploring, reporting, and cooperating? If so, I surely hope that you may serve as a good example to His Lordship. Perhaps, through your moral example, he will have left off with his harsh language concerning my person."

It is possible that the hooded figure is grinning, but then, it's hard to tell.

(Pardon the insufferable Chelish. ;) )

Koemi arks a rainbow eyebrow on the ongoing chatter.

The wayang shrinks back from Koemi's advance, pulling one of her thin arms up toward her face. You notice an white dots in an intricate pattern on the inside of her wrist. "Thanks no cousin. None please." Having delivered her message, the wayang hurries off toward Skyreach Tower.

I don't believe Koemi is Chelaxian. Given your Skills and Chronicles I am pretty comfortable saying you have no idea.

Malus corrects Ozymandias' slip of the tongue: "That would be two damned Chelaxians..." He slily grins, showing his excessive amounts of pointed teeth.

He turns to address Iason's question, "The tale of our journey through Jormurdun will take more time to tell than I think we have now, but let us just say the we did not find it quite as abandoned as we first believed."

In truth, Malus is a member of the Dark Archive and has never been a member of the faction Cheliax, but he certainly hails from there.

Oz now worries that a conspiracy by the former Pathfinders of the Cheliax's Lodge was coming down upon him, so he stands quite close to the Eagle Knight, definitely not the best of friends with him, but preferable to the alternative. "We should head to Skyreach at first light tomorrow. I for one, have a few very important notes to start writing to the higher ups. Nothing scares them more than a strongly worded letter from a nobleman."

Liberty's Edge

As the halfling sidles up next to him Thadd can't help but stifle a sigh. Granted he can see where Oz would feel uncomfortable around the Cheliaxians but this constant bickering could make for a long and tiresome mission. "Experience has shown me that the higher ups can ignore letters just as easily has verbal requests. Then again I'm far from a nobleman."

"Truth be told I have a few preparations to make myself. So long as none of us are miraculously reassigned during the course of the evening I'll see you all at first light."

Malus turns to address Ozymandias, speaking a little more quietly.

"Do not fret, my lord, I will ensure that Ripper here is well fed before we depart. He is ever so hungry..."

Malus grins at his little joke, knowing the noble is already uncomfortable. Ripper shrieks loudly and flaps his wings conspiratorially.

At a normal volume, Malus speaks to the adventurers.

"Will anyone else be joining us on this excursion?"

At this point, there is no doubts, and Ozymandias is CERTAIN there is a conspiracy against him. He only smiles and nods, thinking Remember, you've fought mythic creatures single handed. You've fought off two succubi single handed... you can take a few Chels if it comes to that...

He will head to his rooms at the most expensive tavern in town, lock all doors and begin writing a letter to Lady Morilla expressing his concerns and noting the names of the Chelaxians who he suspected weretrying to kidnap him, asking to make sure they were properly punished if he went missing within the next few days. When morning comes and everybody arrives at the room designated in Skyreach, they are greeted by a lithe, black-haired elven woman seated at the table. The woman is dressed in traditional Varsian gypsy garb with a shawl draped over her shoulders There is a half drank cup of tea to her right and before her she is laying out harrow cards in a 3x3 pattern.

"Greetings darling. My name is Zynep Ravana, servant of the Savored Sting. I sense good energy from this caravan. May our travels be fortuitous and safe."

The Pathfinders sleep well in the comfort of the Grand Lodge, and in the morning have a quick breakfast before heading off to Skyreach Tower and the office of the gruff but efficient Venture-Captain Valsin.

Seated behind a large, antique desk in his wood-paneled office, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin looks up from the pile of papers before him and shuffles them to one side. “Perfect timing! Welcome Pathfinders!

I had an interesting conversation with the Master of Spells Aram Zey yesterday. An old friend—Lady Darchana, Archdean of the Arcanamirium here in Absalom—contacted Master Zey. She’s a councilmember on the Low Council, too. It seems her dinner party last week had an unexpected guest: a handmaiden of her fancy guest’s had picked up a scrying sensor somewhere. When Lady Darchana learned that someone was attempting to eavesdrop on her party, she used her magic to trace the sensor back to its source. It sounds as though she didn’t learn anything conclusive, and she’s interested in bringing in an independent party to try and learn more. Master Zey agrees.

Make no mistake, this is an excellent opportunity for you to impress a well-connected friend of the Society. Lady Darchana requested that the Pathfinders call upon her at her estate in the Petal District once they learn something of the origins of this servant. The owner of the handmaiden is named Lady Silviana Dimora. Lady Silviana isn’t a councilmember or the like—at least not yet. From what I understand, though, she is an up- and-comer who is rubbing elbows with all of the right people, and she likely has little knowledge of where the slave was purchased. I recommend speaking to her majordomo Milana about the handmaiden, or you can pay a visit to her solicitor, a Chelish fellow named Salbus over in the Coins. Questions?

Oz frowns when he hears mention of slaves, but keeps quiet until the Venture Captain was finished speaking. "I"m interested more about Lady Darchana. "I imagine the Society would be displeased were we to go barging into the homes of the nobility yelling accusations," he muses, brushing a few crumbs from his fingers. "We shall endeavor to handle this with tact, Captain."

He makes a mental note to change clothes before they arrive at the Dimora household, to something a bit more upper-crust, but he privately thinks the chance to talk to a fellow Chelish will be the more fruitful option.

"Who else was at this dinner party, sir? Perhaps Lady Darchana was not intended victim of this spying incident, but someone else in attendance."

He takes the moment to incline his head courteously to the last member of their field team. "A pleasure, my lady."

The Pathfinders travel quickly from the Foreign Quarter into the Coins in search of the Red Letter. The Coins district is always busy with people going about their business it seems, regardless of the time of day, but in the early morning it seems crisp and peaceful. After asking a few merchants along the way, the Pathfinders come upon the building they are looking for...

Located in a rented office space in the Coins, the office is located on the ground floor of a recently rebuilt two- story building that houses several different professional offices and merchants. A small plaque with an Asmodean pentacle and an inscription reading “Red Letter— Solicitor Salbus” hangs outside.

As the office door opens, a small bell chimes overhead. Inside, the cramped space holds a meticulously organized bookshelf and a rosewood desk.

Seated at the desk, a middle-aged Chelish man with short red hair and a widow’s peak peers intently at a sheaf of legal documents as he carefully copies out key clauses, then acknowledges his visitors. He looks up from his work with a slight smirk on his thin lips and introduces himself. "Solicitor Solvius Salbus. What brings you across my threshold this glorious day? When it seems not to, he breathes out slightly in relief. He inclines his head to Salbus and steps inside (leaving Etrigan outside to guard the door, for now) with his companions. He closes the door.

Quickly, Iason explains the bare bones-- what Salbus needs to know, no need for loose gossip-- of the situation-- a problematic slave, caught doing something she really should not have.

"Obviously, your interests here lie in protecting your employer. The society is well aware she had nothing to do with the behavior of her slave... but the sooner we can find the true culprit responsible, the sooner Her Ladyship can be cleared. Grimacing slightly, the Chelaxian spreads his hands to admit defeat. “Ordinarily I would not speak of privately executed contracts with an unaffiliated third party,” Solvius says before patting a folded paper on his desk. “However Lady Silviana had a letter delivered to me prior to her departure for Taldor, authorizing me to disclose to the deputized agents of Lady Darchana the identity of the chattel merchant. Mahjub Mahdi is the purveyor in question and can be found at the northern end of Misery Row. His private shop is called Mahdi’s Chattel. It’s a step up from the Slave Pits to be sure—a much more orderly experience, a very fine display parlor with excellent lighting, and he always keeps excellent wines on hand. I trust you will treat him with the respect that he deserves.

Nice work guys!

Still grumbling about having to deal with a slaver, Ozymandias walks out the building, stating aloud, "The respect a slaver deserves is none at all."

Before continuing on to Madhi's Chattel, horrible institution Oz will head to wherever he could find a camel, or perhaps find someone he could purchase one off of on the street, buy it, and place most of his equipment on it since I swear I had one...

Iason inclines his head politely to Solvius. "I see. We thank you for your cooperation, and you may rest assured we shall do our best to keep Lady Silviana's name out of this unpleasantness..."

"How convenient, then, that you seem disposed to show everybody none at all. It's very egalitarian of you," Iason says coolly to Ozymandias's impassioned words. "Come, Etrigan."

The figure slips into a silent tread behind its master, staying close behind as they move, with their fellows, through the streets of Absalom towards the infamous Misery Row. Iason pauses momentarily in the alley between two buildings to draw close to his bodyguard, murmur something, and touch the hulking figure on the shoulder.

"I have often heard a saying that while one can buy status, one cannot buy class, Iason."

Malus addresses Ozymandias directly:

"Of course, this is just a saying, and has no relevance to our current situation..."

Malus lets his words hang in the air for a few seconds before carrying on.

"I believe our next stop will be to speak with the majordomo, or shall we carry on directly to Murder Row?"

Iason's mouth twists briefly at Malus's words, and he inclines his head slightly.

"Is that a Taldan saying, do you know? I have always been fascinated by the role that economic demands play in the continual new granting of titles by King Stavian," he murmurs.

As for the actual matter at hand, and not pleasant sniping, Iason spreads his hands slightly. "We may go to the majordomo if people think it useful-- I was imagining the slave next, but if there is information to be gained from the visit uptown, I am amenable. I will have to change, en route, to something more-- appropriate."

Sensing no sarcasm in Malus' words, Oz still narrows his eyes, believing the Chelaxians to just be really cool faced in their lies. "Yes, we should see the majordomo... but now that I think about it..." Oz ponders suddenly, looking blankly off into space.

who was it that owned the slave? Was it the soliciter, or one of the nobles we will be visiting? Oz would like to purchase the slave's freedom for two reasons, the first of which being that he thinks it the right thing to do. The second of course is to help the mission.

Edit: That makes much more sense Malus. I was getting the ownership mixed up a bit. Perhaps I could speak to the majordomo about purchasing the slave then. It will take a bit of pomp, a bit of grace, and a bit of "Oh, what a meddlesome slave; I'm sure you have no need for it anymore. Let me buy her, and bring her back to Taldor as my indentured servant. A life of hard work over there would sure whip it into shape." Hey, Lion Blades have to be resourceful when they want something, and in this case, it's to see someone freed.

Lady Silviana owned the slave that crashed Lady Darchana's party. Solicitor Salbus arranged the purchase through Mahjub Mahdi in Murderer's Row. There is also the majordomo to speak to who would be (I think?) the head of household slaves for Lady Silviana.

The group of Pathfinders head from the Coins into the affluent Petal district in search of Dimora Manor. It is located on the far eastern side of the district, but the walk through the flowered streets is pleasant and fragrant, though Etrigan may suffer from seasonal allergies. The robed figure sniffles and sneezes his way across the district. The manor's and estates in the Petal District are opulent and the grounds all well tended.

Reaching Dimora Manor, it is surrounded by an 8-ft high fieldstone wall, as are many of the surrounding estates, and the grounds have been recently tended. The grass underfoot is thick and soft, there are several recently planted shade trees, and a wide assortment of flowering plants. The grounds appear unguarded and the gate stands open, a smooth, cobblestone path leading you to the manor house. Directly in front of the manor house is a pond with several large lilies and a lion-shaped marble fountain that bubbles soothingly.

You explain to the doorman that you are here to see the majordomo. He explains that Milana is very busy, but he shows you to a sitting room where you may wait for her. The room is richly decorated with a painting depicting the massive Grand Bridge of the Empire in Oppara and several plush, blue couches and chairs. Excusing himself, he returns after several minutes with a tray of breakfast rolls, fresh fruit and several types of refreshment. "Milana will be along shortly," as he closes the doors again.

---

It is nearly midday when Milana finally arrives to see you. Milana is a stern-looking woman with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She is well dressed, but is clearly not of the nobility. She explains again that Lady Silviana is not in Absalom and departed 2 days ago.

"I really must apologize to have kept you for so long only to see you leave again," she says in an even, calm and commanding voice, "However, Lady Silviana is unavailable for unscheduled meetings at this time. I can schedule an appointment for you in approximately two weeks' time, when Her Ladyship is expected to return. Would that suit?"

Milana's raised eyebrow as she speak gives you the impression that she expects a 'yes' in answer to her question.

Ozymandias gratefully partakes in the refreshments, and flips a gold coin to the doorman when he brings them. "for your time," Oz says with a smile. He will proceed to tell everyone else waiting of all of his great deeds done in the name of Taldor and the Pathfinder Society, including bringing the Horn of Aroden to the head of the former 'Taldor Faction', fighting off a yeti with several heroic Andorans and Osirions, and singlehandedly fighting off not one succucus, not two succubi, but two succubi, an imp and a dominated party member.

When Milana finally arrives, he will get up and bow deeply, or as deeply as a halfling could. "Greetings m'lady. We actually arrived in order to speak with yourself. We had some questions concerning a certain handmaiden who would have been at a dinner party last week, a party hosted by Lady Darchana. Perhaps you could spare a few minutes?"

You can easily see she takes together all her self control not to improve the painting. As the secretary finaly arrives she is relieved.

Milana shakes her head, touching her hand to her forehead. "Lady Darchana’s dinner party. What an embarrassment for Lady Silviana. Can you imagine being told that your handmaiden is some sort of… well… spy? Dreadful. The woman’s name is Atlag, and she has been here for almost three weeks! Three weeks! When I think of the private conversations that happened in front of Atlag? It makes me ill, honestly ill.

Composing herself, Milana continues, “Lady Silviana retains a solicitor, a Chelish gentleman named Solvius Salbus. He works out of an office in the Coins called the Red Letter. He drew up the paperwork for my Lady to complete the transaction on Atlag with a man named...” She wags her pointer finger a few times, shaking her head as she tries to recall the name. “Mahdi Mahjub. No, Mahjub Mahdi! He does his business down in Misery Row, of course. It’s a small shop with several large windows to allow passersby to see into his display parlor from the street. ‘Mahdi’s Chattel: Absalom’s Finest,’ so the sign claims. Honestly, I think every third building in Misery Row claims to be ‘Absalom’s Finest.’ I wonder how many spies like Atlag he’s sold over the years? It’s a dreadful, dreadful business. I am not sure there is anything else I can tell you, but I am sure you understand my Lady’s desire to move on from this embarrassment? Good? Yes? Thank you.
