Hulking in her armor, this Tien tiefling inspects the room with a suspicious scowl on her face. Slinking behind her, a feathered reptile hisses aggressively, only to hush when the woman shoots it a glare, the barest hint of her fangs showing.

This young man enters the meeting chamber wearing non-descript traveling clothes along with a scarf tied around his neck in the latest fashion for Absalom. A closer look reveals his light brown hair, cut in an uneven style that peeks out underneath a scarf. Sky blue eyes peek out from his youthful face."Hello there! I am Wadi--" His voice is cut off by the hissing reptile. "Ahhh, nice...raptor!" He backs away from the velociraptor before addressing the tiefling. "I am glad you are on our side!"

Good day fellow Pathfinders. This one goes by the name of Mido! But you may call me Master Mido!

A halfling quietly walks into the room. Several bladed weapons cling to her belt, but the most prominent are the longbow and shield resting on her back. She raises her hand to greet the rest of the room with a wave, revealing a tattoo of an antler-shaped bow on her palm. Other than that, her body is riddled with various smaller scars.

"Hi. I'm Nergi. Or Gi. Whichever you prefer, just be sure to talk to me when you have my attention. Otherwise I might miss it."

She eyes the people in the room for a moment, stopping when sighting the tiefling and her pet.

"Strangest dog I ever saw.", she adds jokingly, then proceeds to find her spot in the room and scanning the faces of its inhabitants.

A human woman rushes into the room, eventually resting against her quarterstaff to catch her breath.

"I hope...I'm not...late..." She stands up. "This blacksmith was able to scribe these runes into my staff, and then I got the summons, but this mage was enchanting my staff at the time so I couldn't leave it there!"

It seems like she was rambling excuses to herself and finally introduces herself. "I'm CIrri Merryweather. Pleased to meet ya!" Cirri offers a handshake to everyone.

The tiefling nods curtly, taking the proffered hand in a strong, albeit perhaps confused handshake. "Rika is I. And raptor is he. Is Pratts. Pathfinder Elyas Dred name him." She shrugs, sparing only a moment to give the animal a look of warning, before continuing. "Is wild beast. He take care of teeth on own. Is dangerous animal. I make understand I top him."

Indeed it does seem that the raptor, while displaying no aggression and even signs of submissiveness, does fear his master.

As each of you chat in the waiting room at the Grand Lodge, the door to Venture Captain Amara Li's office swings open. The stoic Tian woman that summoned each of you here now beckons you inwards, and places an ornate tea tray on the edge of her desk. Steam drifts upwards from the freshly-made pot. Li invites you to partake of the drink when you enter the neatly organized room to see various tapestries and artifacts imported from the distant land of Tian Xia.

“I would like to thank you all for coming here despite the
lack of explanation. Circumstances have forced me to be
discreet in this assignment. There are many who would put the
information I am about to share with you to more unsavory
ends.”
Amara begins to take an initial sip from her own teacup
before she continues.

“Several months ago I arranged the successful sale
of a pair of tomes from my homeland of Tian Xia to
a versed historian here in Absalom. Of these books,
the Infernal Incantation was the more highly sought
after, as it is said to contain the secrets of binding the
legions of Hell.”

Amara takes another sip of her tea and then places
the cup on her desk, her expression turning cold. “The historian—one Yargos Gill—has spent the past several weeks studying the book from within his Absalom villa. To make matters more complicated, Yargos decided to try performing one of the rituals held within the Infernal Incantation late last night. From the breathless ramblings of his assistant who arrived at my door only a handful of hours ago, it would appear that something went horribly wrong with the ritual Yargos enacted.”

“From what I was told, the ritual revealed to Yargos and
his aides that the Infernal Incantation was
not a guide on
imprisoning fiendish forces, but instead the book itself was
a prison for the armies of Hell. Within the confines of those
ancient pages reside hundreds—perhaps even thousands—
of devils eager to escape their long imprisonment. If
bumbling has caused some sort of disturbance within the
tome, then we need to ensure it is fixed as quickly and as
discreetly as possible. It would not do the populace any good
to realize that a full-on infernal invasion could appear in the
middle of the city!”

“I need you to go to Yargos’s estate, where his aide has
already informed him of your impending arrival. Once you
meet with the historian, learn what you can about the book
and how to reverse the meddling he has caused. Above all else,
ensure that the legions of Hell are contained.”

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 15:
You’ve come across references to the Infernal Incantation before: as Amara says, it’s a tome from distant Tian Xia said to hold the secrets of binding the denizens of Hell.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 20:
In addition to its rumored content, the Infernal Incantation has a relatively unknown sister document: the Celestial Song.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 25:
Both the Incantation and the Song are written in Celestial and Infernal – but not in the order one would suspect. The pages of the Infernal Incantation are written in a harsh and sinister Celestial script, while the pages of the Celestial Song are penned in crisp Infernal.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 30:
Within the Celestial Song are rituals that are rumored to sway the minds of those nearby, but before these powers take effect, the tome unleashes a great angelic chorus that takes hours to complete.

And with that giant briefing box text we are off!

"Very well. I wish each of you luck in your task." Amara Li says as the six of you (and Pratts) depart the lodge in haste.

The trip from the foreign quarter to Eastgate is mostly uneventful. For now the streets are mostly calm, as the men and woman of Absalaom sit eating meals indoors while the city itself transitions between the bustle of the day and the different hum of activity that is the nightlife. You follow Amara Li's directions carefully and eventually reach the estate described. Yargos Gill’s villa is a stand-alone edifice that would normally meld into the background of Absalom’s various structures - were it not for the massing crowd of local citizens in front of the entrance. Most of them gaze upwards as the murmur as up above on the building's second floor, lights flicker as if burning orange and red embers dance within.

"Ain't that that old wizard's place?"
"Naw. It's the Gill fella's. Always head in a book."
"Head in a book means wizard. Nine times in ten. Anyone called the fire brigade."

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The assembled throng generally ignores Wadi at first, but as Cirri and Firaxus move in as well most of them begin to head back to their own homes, still gossiping along the way. the trio manages to speak to one lady who seems eager to pass on what she's seen, or at least heard.

"Unusual? Not before tonight, not in the 'adventurer' sense you lot mean at least." she says noting the array of weapons and armor the party has between them. "Just Yargos and those two girls of his constantly coming and going. All hours of the night too. I tell you, those two ladies may be smart enough assistants, but there's a difference between right and proper. Saw the pair of them rush back in just a bit before the screaming and flames started. No one's come out since."

Moving up to the open door, Rika peers inside. The immediate interior is in pristine condition. A basic dining room, kitchen, and meeting room fill the first floor. The tiefling also spies a stairwell leading up to a second level, from which a dim red light is spilling down from.

With her size, Nergi has little to no issues navigating through he crowd. She makes no effort to talk to the crowd-members over the noise they make. After seeing the woman speak about more people in the building, she rushes for the door.

She makes a quick gesture with her hand and a small downpour of rain appears in the immediate vicinity, soaking her clothes.

Hurrying upstairs, you find that the light is coming from behind a closed door. Swinging it open reveal sheets of dancing orange and red fire covering the walls of this long room, forming blazing curtains around two windows facing the streets below. The rest of the room, and the wooden door itself, however are completely absent of flames.

In the center of the floor is etched a swirling sinister symbol, formed of a darkened red substance and accented by a few nearby candles. Opposite the only entrance into this room is a large open altar filled with more candles, a single blood-stained dagger, and an open book from which torrents of flame feed the inferno along the walls. Nestled in the two corners to either side of the entryway are three humanoid bodies — two toppled over one another to the south and a third in the north, all face down on the wooden floor.

Very much not lying down however is a seething crimson devilish figure deftly wielding a vicious, saw-toothed glaive. Below its toothy maw writhes a hideous, twitching beard. It snarls at you as harsh words in a sinister tongue dance in your heads.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Wadi recalls hearing stories about these types of fiends. Bearded Devils: savage warriors in Hell's legions. These 'Barbazu' have hides that can only be fully pierced by good or silver weapons, are immune to fire, and are also resilient against spells some SR, as well as being able to shrug off some cold and acid attacks.

The monster's filthy beard and sharp-looking glaive cause something to nag Wadi at the back of his mind, but the mage can't quite recall what about them is so troubling...

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Iriori exhorts his followers to learn, and Master Mido's studies have taught him quite a bit about Barbazu. In addition to the above, Beard Devils are so named for their disgusting and spiky beards. If the devil can land multiple claw attacks on an opponent, it can also lash out at them with the beard, not only possibly sealing more damage but exposing the victim to the Devil Chills disease.

It's glaive is little better however, as wounds dealt by it continue to bleed, and those injuries are profanely difficult to staunch.
