Next to arrive is a profoundly disquieting individual: Sinuous muscles can be seen beneath marble-white skin, its movements are rigid, odd, and punctuated by the occasional small spasm, and its sex is impossible to determine for sure, for in addition to its fine Tian garb, it wears a stunning metal-and-cloth full mask that reveals only the wearer's eyes: two stark white almonds, as cold and bright as distant stars. Against its right hip it carries a small hexagonal spellbook and a small assortment of wands, and against its left it rests a massive sword that periodically generates sparks as it drags against the stone floor.

It enters, sits down in a single, stiff motion, and begins playing a strange variant of solitaire with a fine deck of ivory cards.

Assuming we're going into a lodge.

An half-elf peeks inside the place, "Awh, well, this must be it huh." As he heaves his scrawny body carrying a load too much for him. The fella dresses smartly, and carries no obvious weapons on his body, no sign that is one for the battlefield. Among his pockets, various writing tools, and measurement stationary such as pencils, pens, rulers, measurement strings stick out. He takes a glance around the room, paying no attention to it's occupants but more so to the room's features. "Some alright woodwork in here huh, could better I s'pose."

He takes a minute to realise whoever he was suppose to be talking to isn't here and runs outs. A couple minutes later he's pushing a beast into the room! The four-legged creature is about as big as a mountain lion, but has features resembling more of a dog. The unique thing about this dog is, it seems to be made out of stone! The creature mumbles, just slightly over her breath into audible range,"Did we have to? I just wanna dig.."

The half elf just continues to drag his dog into the nearest chair, "Don't mind Terra, she's a stubborn one. Name's Kitt, nice to be of acquaintance."

”The legacy of Tian Xia’s legendary mystic arcanist, the nearly immortal Grandmaster Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix Tournament is held only once every ten years. The Tournament is run by Sifu Xho Nuo, Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix and sole heir to Hao Jin’s secrets. The prize for victory: an artifact pulled from Hao Jin’s fabled collection of the greatest wonders Golarion has ever known”

”Though Xho Nuo has made no formal announcement, we have learned the sifu has chosen to hold the qualifying round for this decade’s tournament here in Absalom. The Pathfinder Society has long sought to send one of its members to compete in this tournament. If our information is true, this means that for the first time, the Society has the opportunity to qualify a good number of its field agents. While the chance to glean an artifact from Hao Jin’s collection is enticing, that is hardly the entirety of our goal. However, I shall speak more on this subject at a later time”

”At present, we have learned that Xho Nuo plans to host a covert meeting to address all would-be contestants. Don’t get too excited though; it’s supposedly being held at a decrepit tavern in the Docks called the Devil’s Dregs. Go there and see what details you can pick up about the competition and the other entrants, but watch your backs. There’s little law to protect you down on the wharves, and it’d take a riot to raise any attention. Oh, and I wouldn’t expect an appearance from Xho Nuo either, as his social status prevents him from contact with such filthy and common places. My guess is that he’ll send one of his agents to rile up as many lowlifes as possible to serve as fodder for the first round of the contest”

”Lastly, though its likely Xho Nuo is aware of our interest in the competition, we need all our agents to maintain as much secrecy as possible. The earth elemental like being groans, as she continues to be fascinated by a little hole in the floor.

As per the Decemvirate's instructions you quickly head over to the covert meeting's location. In a quiet, rundown section of the Docks, you spot a weathered wooden sign hanging above a wide alcove that reads “Devil’s Dregs.” A pair of thick double doors within the alcove lead into the tavern.

Mun follows along with the group to the Devil's Dregs. "I may not really be dressed for this," he says, his finely tailored clothing and jewelry standing strong and proud in defense of his statement. "Ah, well. It is as it is." He opens one of the double doors to the tavern, and motions the other Pathfinders inside. As soon as all have passed, he follows them in, allowing the door to close behind him.

Despite its sizable taproom, the Devil’s Dregs seems filled to capacity. The smells of cheap ale, unwashed bodies, and thick pipe smoke mix in the crowded room, as tightly squeezed contestants push and shove their way about the tavern. As one might expect in the Docks district, the tavern extends over the harbor, and beneath the floor lies the silty, brackish water of Absalom’s wide bay. The dim light of the tavern’s few lanterns exposes few specifics about the patrons or the surroundings.

Aside from the front doors from the shore, a set of double doors leads out of the tavern onto rickety piers in the center of both the east and west walls, and a number of windows look out over the harbor to the south.

Kitt scans the room as he checks out the various contestants. These
include members of the Aspis Consortium, Red Mantis agents, and several other obvious rivals, as well as some foreigners never before seen. Among the foreigners stands a unshaven swordsman in ornate lamellar armor and a full helm bearing the visage of a snarling demon.

Map is posted above if you wish to go ahead and position yourselves within the tavern.

Sensing the atmosphere on more levels than one, Xukong draws a wand shaped like an isosceles pyramid of black marble, its edges lined with diamond, and touches it to both shoulders. Its form is momentarily overlaid by a the stylized black silhouette of a suit of armor (mage armor wand).

It then shows the others two of the other wands it keeps at its side - one, a red coral wand shaped like a pitchfork (infernal healing)[, the other the other a verdigris-coated copper wand tipped with a stylized obsidian sunburst - as well as a few flasks filled with translucent black liquid (both inflict light wounds). "If I am hurt, use these to aid me. I have...special sensitivities."

That business out of the way, it takes a nearby seat with its back to the wall.

As the party readies to move into the 'Dregs', Laureglyn casts Prestidigitation to dirty up/scuff up the appearance of the clothes and equipment of anyone who looks too hoity-toity for this place, including himself.

When Mun notices Xukong armoring up with his wand, he's reminded of his own wands. Why do I always forget these? They're so useful. The elf pulls out two wands, both of an almost identical, austere design that complements his noble garb. Those nearby might notice a slightly different knurl pattern in the handles that allows the oracle to differentiate the two. He quickly steps to the side so as not to stand out, then taps himself with each wand.

With each passing minute the room quickly becomes more and more packed. As all of the group has failed to pick any of the open seats they are quickly filled by other contestants until there is only standing room remaining shoulder to shoulder. The room is now tightly and dangerously packed.

Without warning, a flash of smoke flares up from the center of the tavern floor. As it clears, a towering, golden-skinned humanoid of hideous and terrifying countenance steps forth, ebon teeth gleaming fiendishly. Standing before the crowd, she greets them with a slow and gracious bow, yet her eyes never look away.

The creature gestures to call the crowd’s attention, and one by one they fall silent.

“Good evening and allow me to introduce myself, I am called Kiang Zhen. My sifu, Xho Nuo, the Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix, wishes for me to tell all of you that he is most pleased to see so many of you eager to attend the tournament. It is his desire that everyone please find a table and make yourselves comfortable at his expense.”

The room becomes increasingly packed as contestants file in, and barely a minute later arriving contestants quickly fill all remaining tables leaving the tavern with standing room only – yet more and more continue to fill the place out – it is tightly packed and it is a struggle to both keep a hold of your own food and drink as well as dodging the spilled food and drink of others.

A short time later…

”Again, your attention please. I regret to inform all of you that Sifu Xho Nuo will not be present this evening, though he has appointed me to speak on his behalf.”

”To speak with candor, there are many who wish the Sifu dead and wish to steal from him the ancient secrets he was appointed to guard. This comes as no surprise to the Emissary, for he has been charged with the protection of a great and terrible power. Even now, in this very room, some of these same individuals sit amongst us. To them I say, Sifu knows who you are and fears you not. He even entreats you to join the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, for he shall not compromise the primary intention of the contest – to find the world’s greatest martial artist. Rest assured, this tournament shall test the mettle of its contestants, regardless of their intentions. Competition shall be fierce and violent without regard for contestants lives. That is your concern – not mine, not the Emissary’s. Those who fail might be lucky enough to walk away with their lives. For this reason, there are few places where our tournament is truly welcome. Thus, given the nature of the tournament and other circumstances, the Emissary has expressed to me the need to retain secrecy. However, I assure you he shall make an appearance before the end of the qualifying round.”

”Lastly, I have noticed many of you have come as teams. This is good, for initially, you may need help from allies you trust.” The beast pauses for a moment, letting his dark, pupil-less gaze hover upon the crowd. From his belt he unfastens a leather satchel and holds it aloft before the crowd. “I have here 100 rubies. On the morrow, fifty of these rubies will begin to glow, and those individuals or groups in possession of one such gem shall be contacted by one of our agents, who will give them the details of where the first event of the qualifier will take place.” then with a wide and wild grin he says “And so it begins!”

On his final words, he tosses the bag into the air, sending the rubies scattering everywhere. The next moment, he vanishes, leaving behind only a vaporous wisp.

In the moment of impact, Kitt and Terra's eyes connect, knowing to be of any use they need to grab one of these rubies in the overly crowded room. Terra jumps up on the table, and Kitt releases a little bit of energy onto her, as she jumps about the room trying to grab at least one with her teeth.

As the rubies scatter, contestants leap from everywhere to grab them. Those few individuals lucky or quick enough to catch a gem before it gets lost in the sea of bodies filling the tavern are immediately assaulted by the nearest empty-handed opponent.

Surprise Round- If any PC has the Combat Reflexes feat or is otherwise unable to be caught flat-footed, he may make a DC 22 Reflex save to grab one such ruby as it flies through the air. Though only for the initial toss of rubies.

It takes a keen eye to notice the faint shimmer of a ruby from among the mass of legs and muddy boots, though getting and holding onto it proves an entirely different challenge, as anyone who manages to get hold of a ruby becomes an immediate target.

Everyone may roll perception checks. If you get a 20 or better, you find a shimmering ruby rolling about the floor. Let's stick with roughly 5 rounds of perception checks for now. Each Pathfinder must gather their own.

Among my character and his eidolon, we have 4 checks that pass DC20, not sure how that would play out though, does that mean my eidolon can collect 3 rubies?

Kitt and Terra's initial attempt seems to have failed as not being quick enough they fall flat on the floor. However, finding themselves stuck on the ground in the crowd finds it to their advantage, as Kitt is able to immediately find one ruby. Terra though being the more perceptive one, with her keen eye manages to spot three other rubies and telepathically informs Kitt of where they lie.

Gillii is unable to spot any rubies dropped about the floor... Instead, he uses his Nereid fascination ability to create a fascination aura that extends 20' around him... (dc 14 will save to resist)... if anyone with a ruby falls under it's sway he will slip over to him or her and relieve them of their prize... IF that doesn't work, he'll just shrug and chalk it up to fate that he is not meant to personally compete in the tournament.

Having found himself pressed up into the corner that he'd used to obscure his wand use when Kiang Zhen appeared, Mūn initially struggled to even glimpse a ruby. After a short while, however, he's able to move deeper into the room where he spies one--and is that another?--on the floor. He quickly stoops down and picks up one of the two rubies that he sees.

Let's see if I can grab that other one too, maybe I could share it with one of my new companions.

He will attempt to pick up the 2nd ruby that he sighted as well, if that's possible. With or without the 2nd ruby, Mūn attempts to obscure the fact that he carries any of the precious stones, and uses the chaos around to move back towards what remains of the group he came with.

Each player needs to acquire their own ruby. SO even if one player rolls multiple successes it doesn't mean you grab more rubies. There will be another chance for those who aren't able to get theirs.

The young bard who was apparently here all along, staring at a wall, politely squeezes and lets the raging mass of Pathfinders look for rubies. This pays out fairly quickly, as one of the glimmering gemstones rolls away and hits the wall next to Iddo. He picks it up with a confused smile.

Seems I misunderstood the beginning portion of this as it contradicts itself slightly. Combat starts immediately. So I will only use your first 2 rounds rolls for perception checks as after the first round combat will start immediately. No need to reroll those perception checks each round . You can use them as the rounds move on to grab more if you wish. So not everyone needs one. That is my mistake.

As the rubies scatter into the mass of people Kitt, Eidolon and Iddo manage to grab ahold of a ruby each. A half-orc with a massive greatsword catches sight of Iddo's ruby as he reaches for it himself. His eyes glare with rage as Iddo snatches just a moment sooner than expected. The familiar symbol of the Aspis Agent coin hangs around the orc's neck as he catches sight of Iddo's wayfinder.

"Give me that ruby!" he sneers as he draws his greatsword.

The crush of people in the tavern makes movement difficult, and while the tavern does not count as difficult terrain for purposes of movement or skill checks, the sheer number of combatants prevents any creature from moving more than its speed in a single round. So simply no double moves.

Once the melee breaks out, groups of opportunistic thugs guard each doorway out of the bar (though not the windows) and attack any person attempting to leave with a ruby, as you can tell by several people attempting to leave the tavern. Should you wish to leave through the open hole in the center of the floor, it is a 15-foot fall to the water’s surface, and the harbor is 20 feet deep at this point. The water outside the bay windows along the tavern’s south wall is 30 feet deep.

While still looking out for rubies, Mūn notices the Aspis agent threatening Iddo. "Find your own ruby," he calls out. "Iddo, protect that prize! All of you, the light of Ashava's moon shines on this tavern and blesses our endeavor! Protect Iddo, and find more rubies!"

Casting Bless: all allies gain a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and saving throws vs. fear effects (duration: 2 minutes)

He moves forward as he speaks, drawing his longspear over his shoulder to readiness, carefully maneuvering among the crush of patrons.

So that I understand correctly: the perception rolls we've already made will continue to happen each round, so in 2 rounds Mūn will find his own ruby?

@Everyone- Correct keep your rolls. On your turn you can wish to fight the challengers, continue to search for more rubies or escape the tavern.

Gillii keeps his own eye out for a ruby, but can't seem to even find the glimmer of one and begins to sing. His song only seems to inspire the massive mob into an all out brawl over rubies.

Mun moves in and blesses the group as an Aspis agent seems intent on taking Iddo's ruby from his bloody hand.

Talondreal quickly slashes at the half-orcs hand as he reaches for the ruby. The sharp blade nearly slices the Aspis agent's hand off as he glares daggers at Talondreal.

Iddo quickly steps out of the orcs path as he pushes into another group that are punching each other over another ruby.

The Orc gets as much room with his massive greatsword as he can and brings it crashing down at Talondreal.

Greatsword vs Talondreal AC 16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

And narrowly misses as Talondreal quickly sidesteps out of the deadly blades path.

So Round 2 the Eidolon noticed another ruby so it has the choice of either going after it or joining the fight. Or you can all attempt to escape with what you have at any point.
