Called to Skyreach at the Grand Lodge in Absalom in the early hours of the morning, you sit before Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae, a tall, dark-haired Varisian sorceress known for helping to found the Pathfinder Lodge in Magnimar. She paces her small, scroll-packed office and recounts a story. “More than a decade ago, a falchion known as Passion’s Edge cut down warrior after warrior, changing hands whenever its owner was bested. A Pathfinder Chronicle from several years ago recently came to my attention with details of the sword and I became more and more curious about it. Last told, a harpy named Tylaca wielded Passion’s Edge and swore an oath to a coven of green hags in the River Kingdoms, declaring herself their champion and swearing to protect them."

“One of the hags, it is said, enjoyed the company of the harpy but the other two hated her presence in their coven. In secret, they plotted to rid the coven of her. Their taunts and tricks did not drive her away, but instead, beguiled by jealousy and incited to rage, Tylaca struck down one of the hags and triggered the sword’s powerful curse. The harpy fell into a deep coma and was only rescued from death at the hands of the other hags by her loyal harpy minions. The remaining hags then shattered the sword into three pieces, tossing the hilt in the river and taking one piece with them as they separated, their coven forever broken."

“This account comes from a Pathfinder in Daggermark who found the first fragment in the protection of one of the hag sisters, whom he slew to acquire it. He then tracked Aelzeldra, the other hag holding the last fragment, to the Wilewood in the River Kingdoms, but was unable to confront her and take the final fragment before being called away for other duties in Varisia. Go to the hag in the Wilewood and get her fragment. Hags are tricky, though, so be careful—she will likely disguise herself as a young beautiful maiden or a swarthy, handsome man, anything to trick you. Pretend to be fooled by her disguise and try to get her to tell you where the other fragment is—she likely knows more about the history of the sword and I’d prefer if you didn’t kill her.” She pauses and hands one of you her fragment of the broken sword.

“Bring this fragment and the hag’s fragment together in Sevenarches. The hilt, retrieved from the Sellen River, rests in Sevenarches with another Pathfinder, a sword sage named Parke Rangston. I’ve asked him to study the fragments, and he will provide lodging for all of you. Give Rangston a day to examine the pieces and then return to Absalom with them. But beware: the fragments likely still hold an old curse, and whoever holds them may be weakened. You leave this afternoon—any questions?”

The tiny gnome grins broadly at listening to the mission. She had her large spellbook in her lap, holding it tightly. "Well this sounds like a fun mission! Has anyone dealt with a hag before? I don't think I have. And tricking her rather than killing her? Now that's more like it."

Knocking confidently on the door before entering, Yanos has always disliked being in Absalom when he couldn't avoid it, too many people. Yanos stops at the entrance, giving a silent signal to his companion, "Drop" to take up a position and watch, than enters. As he does he nods towards Pai, taking her arm to grasp at the forearm, a greeting in the tradition more common in his homeland. "It has been long friend. I sense you have grown strong since our journey into the Impossible Lands." Suddenly a voice from just behind the tall Ulfen battlepriest chimes in, "There is nothing impressive, much less impossible about those ol' phonies.", causing Yanos to place a hand over his face, embarrassed for a moment.

Seeing the others, Yanos does a more formal bow. "I am Count Yanos, the Lord Baron and Knight Protector of the Realm of Ustalav, Huscarl to the Empire, faithful servant of the Shadow Lodge, Knight of Eristal." Then with a wave to indicate he was joking, "Or simply Yanos. My friend out there is Drop. True, true, he is a beast, but I rescued him as a hatchling from a bunch of goblins some time ago, and well, he sort of thinks I'm his daddy. Just kind of follows me around. My other friend in here," pointing just over his shoulder, "is Gamin. Doesn't take too kindly to being called "he" or "she". But Gamin's older and wiser than some deities. So,. . . who is ready to go smite the crap out of some evil!?!?"

"Ol' Gamin the Reforged here is a bit miffed that we are being asked to look into yet another broken sword. . ." to which the unsheathed blade on his back offers a low growl, but says nothing "it's a soar spot, as he seems to think there can be only one."

Yanos is a tall Ulfen man. He is not wearing armor, but simple loose rags, though it is clear he has something metal on underneath, you can't see where. covered nearly head to toe, only his eyes are really apparent, but oddly his eye color seems to shift randomly every few minutes. In one hand, almost like a quarterstaff, he is leaning on a longspear that radiates a soft silver light. On the handle you see multiple crude marks caved in, notches indicating a count of some sort. An odd broken longsword hands from his back, not in a scabbard but rather leather leashes.

Turning to the Venture-Captainess, "Do we know what exactly the broken blade's curse is, or was? Do we know which of the fragments might contain it? Is it still active, that we know of? And, is there some sort of relationship between the Harpy and the Hag? Something we might use?"

That or questions.

Or what variety of Hag ths might be? And is he sure there is only the one of each? That could be, well a surprise I'm not interested in having."

VC Shevala remarks in response to Yanos. "The River Kingdoms of northeastern Avistan have long been a haven for inland pirates, anarchists, exiles, and anyone who can't seem to make it in more civilized nations. The Kingdoms are by no means a unified nation, but rather a constantly shifting group of city-states and fiefdoms, each at war with the others both to gain more power and to prevent their own demise."

"I’ve arranged passage on a ship to Cassomir where you will then board a barge. The pilot is an ally of the Society. Give him these directions assembled by other Pathfinders and you’ll find your way to the hag in no time."

The scratching of a pen becomes audible when it suddenly stops, having been going at it for so long beforehand that everyone else had "tuned it out" by now, leaving a jarring momentary silence.

The holder of the pen - an elf with straw-blond hair, ice-blue eyes that smolder with an ominous coldness, and wearing the immaculate formal garb of a physician - looks up from a dense page of tight-scripted notes; whether those notes are about the briefing or something else entirely is unclear.

"Could you tell us anything else about the sword's curse? Also, I am slightly confused: What became of Tylaca? Is she still in a coma?"

A towering, broad-shouldered half-orc stands listening in silence as the Venture-Captain briefs them on their mission. His small, red-tinged eyes flick alertly from side to side, opening slightly in surprise when he hears they're being sent to collect pieces of a broken falchion. He lifts a massive hand unconsciously to his left shoulder, where the hilts of three heavy, curved swords can be seen, their pommels formed in different shapes to make them easy to distinguish in a hurry. ”Guess I don’t need a fourth blade, especially one with such a funny name," he mutters to himself in a deep, rumbling voice.

At Yanos’ introduction, the half-orc returns the courtesy in blunter fashion. ”Name’s Mohok. No titles like yours, though. Got thrown out of Belkzen for being too human, then run out of Mendev for being too much orc. Now just trying to do some good in this damned world.” Mohok’s mottled green skin stands in stark contrast to the jagged blue tattoos that cover his face, neck and arms. He wears a finely-crafted steel breastplate over a worn, tattered jerkin of some indeterminate dark shade. A large raven, glossy black, sits on his shoulder, grooming its feathers fastidiously, seeming to pay no mind to what goes on around it.

”My blades are named too,” he adds, laying his fingers on the diamond-shaped pommel of one of his blades. ”Someone told me once to use my best judgment for how to solve a problem – so this sword is Best Judgment. My adamantine one is Sound Judgment, and my old iron one is Poor Judgment, ‘cuz sometimes that’s all you’ve got.”

Turning back to Shevala Iorae, he asks, ”What can you tell us about hags and harpies? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hag in person, always like to know a bit about what I’m fightin’.”

Who takes the fragment?

When asked about the sword fragments, VC Iorae frowns. "The fragment saps you of your normal faculties, making you less able to function. In even the brief time I handled one of the fragments, I felt a steady weakening of my strength and my will. Rangston in Sevenarches has reported the same. she explains. "Additionally, no one has found a way around the curse other than shielding the item in lead—but even that only seems to last for a short time."

She gives you the day to gather anything you need from Absalom and then books you passage on a month-long voyage leading back to Cassomir. There goes two months of your character's life! You transfer in Cassomir to a flat-bottomed barge that takes you up river into the River Kingdoms and, after a week, Jolson, the halfling pilot of the barge, disembarks you at your desired location: a rough footpath leading into a tangled forest.

Amid a tightly clustered forest, thick with dense shrubs, tangled trees, and thorny vines, sits a clearing spanning little more than 40 feet at its widest point after about an hour of hiking. Clustered between trees on the western edge of the clearing sits a tiny hut nearly consumed by vines and patches of feathery moss. A gnarled weeping willow droops over the ramshackle shelter obscuring the structure like a curtain. On the southern end of the clearing, a small shrine composed of river rocks and topped with a spherical stone carved to look like a bloodshot eye glares at anyone entering the area. The surrounding forest is an impassable wall of vegetation save the footpath leading north back to the river.

After weeks of travel, even a seasoned sailor like Mohok is ready to get off the barge and into the forest, though the density of the woods takes him a bit by surprise. He peers around the clearing, alert for any surprises and studying the ground for any signs of what might have passed through the area. He then considers the shrine a moment while asking the others, "Anyone know what gets worshiped at a shrine like that?"

Pai takes her time and admires the shrine, once she finally got off that boat. As she did so, she pulls out her Rod of Lesser Extend spells and casts False Life on herself, and Mage Armor on both herself and the one known as The Physician.

False Life Temporary HP for 18 hours 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

So the Physician has Mage Armor for 18 hours, Pai has Mage Armor for 18 hours, and Pai has 15 temporary hit points for 18 hours.

Does anyone have a handy haversack? That might protect against the fragment. Otherwise, I'll take it, since I don't use my Strength much anyway.

Casting Heightened Awareness as we approach the hut and shrine. Assuming I'll use it for the +4 initiative if something happens. Using my Corruption Resistance SLA on myself (Resist 10 alignment-based damage for 7 hours).

Taking 10 on any relevant Knowledges, for 24 or 25 depending on the skill.

Not I. Why don't we have The Physician start with it, and he can study the weakening effects of the fragment, for scientific purposes? Then, once we know what it does, we can sort out who should carry it going forward.

The group heads towards the shrine as Mohok finds tracks of a female humanoid all over the area. The shrine appears to be a shrine to Gyronna, the Angry Hag. She is not a popular deity as many fear her and her clergy, which is entirely female. These are usually the throwaways of society: disfigured prostitutes, wives caught in adultery, pregnant teenagers disowned by their parents, and so forth. Priestesses are renowned for their ability to foster hatred and turn friend against friend. Her priestesses are also known to swap young babies for hideous monstrous creatures birthed from their own womb.

As the group investigates the shrine, a shriek echoes out as a woman can be seen reaching out towards the party. She looks extremely roughshod with her clothes torn and face muddied. Her ankle is bound by a chain to a thick metal spike in the ground. "Help, please! Help, brave adventurers!"

Dr. Vitruvian barely bats an eyebrow. "First we find a shrine to Gyronna the hag goddess, then we find a very picture of a damsel in distress whose speech patterns might be best described as 'contrived?' The only reason not to suspect a trap in this instance is that it would be an incredibly half-hearted one."

@Yanos: Not sure what you are looking for with the second Kn. Religion check. You have a general idea of Gyronna, but nothing ultra-specific. This is from your first Kn. Religion roll.

As a couple of you express doubts and don't immediately react, the woman sighs as the lot of you act very un-heroically. She dusts herself off, stands up and reverts to her hag form. "You sure aren't good Pathfinders, are you? Just my luck, too..."

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 What kind of hag are we looking at? DR, special attacks?

Mohok studies the woman as she transforms into a hag, recalling what he knows of such creatures. He then moves closer, ready to attack!

Dang, forgot my usual casting of longstrider! Let's say I cast it after this combat. For now, double move (at 20' speed) into the fight.

Terrifying crones known to haunt foul swamps and tangled forests, green hags harbor an intense hatred for all beauty and purity. Making use of their varied deceptive abilities, these crones delight in murdering innocents, unhinging noble minds, and debasing the pure of heart. They are particularly fond of using disguise self to assume the forms of alluring young maidens and then seducing young men away from their lovers or families. In this form, they can infect such noble and upstanding citizens with all manner of debauchery and scandal. Some green hags prefer to reveal their true natures to their lovers at a moment precisely engineered to drive the man mad with horror and shame. Others drag out their dalliances and do what they can to utterly ruin the lives of the men they seduce before showing the broken shell that remains the truth. In the end, the luckiest of these unfortunate lovers end up being eaten by their green hag companions—for the unlucky, their final doom can be much worse, for the cruel imagination of the green hag is vast and their resistance to lesser magicks means that even an arcane apprentice can fall prey.

Mohok doesn't believe that green hags possess any forms of damage mitigation and the common green hag has been known to drain strength from their victims with a single touch.

Bomb ranged touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Uh-oh. Does that miss?
fire damage: 3d4 + 7 ⇒ (1, 3, 4) + 7 = 15
Where does it land if it missed? 1 is the square directly above her, and we proceed counterclockwise: 1d8 ⇒ 2 Oh f#!$.

The uncannily unfortunate Mohok takes the full damage (I think, maybe I'm wrong?), and the hag will take 10 fire damage, or 5 with a DC 20 Reflex save. If we're lucky and her touch AC is rather low, then the situation is of course reversed.
