Murder in Waterdeep! (Recruiting)

Recruitment

Help!

One of the Lords of Waterdeep has been murdered! What the watch has determined was that his heart was cut out! And he was simply poisoned? All that the members of the Watch found was a symbol of Cyric, the Prince of Lies and a symbol of Bhaal, the Lord of Murder!

Not only that, but there has been a string of murders. The hearts of several people have been cut out ritually and burned. All that is left from the murder are symbols of Cyric and Bhaal.

Welcome to the Forgotten Realms

This campaign happens in Waterdeep. There is a serial killer on the loose in Waterdeep, and the PCs have been hired to find out who it is and to stop him. This campaign is one where the Horror element of Fantasy has been amped up. The Watch has been stumped as to how to figure out the serial killer's identity and to figure out why he has been killing people all over Waterdeep.

The PCs have been hired to figure it all out and how to stop him.

Campaign Features:
* The Campaign first happens in Waterdeep city. A serial killer has been taking hearts and burning them. People at first thought it was Perytons, but the modus operandi has been too methodical.
* You will be going into Undermountain.
* Undermountain will be stocked with monsters inspired by Hammer Films horror pictures. Since I grew up with them. Of course, for variety, there would be some traditional Fantasy monsters like orcs and goblins.

Game System: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2e. Using the Revised FRCS from 1993. You will need at least the Player's Handbook for 2nd Edition. Available here.

Game Timeline: 1369 DR.

Campaign Setting: Waterdeep and Undermountain. Eric L. Boyd's City of Splendors: Waterdeep will be helpful. If you can, you can also get Ed Greenwood's FR1: Waterdeep, though both books have much of the same information. Marco Volo's Guide to Waterdeep may also be helpful. Do not read any of the Undermountain books for AD&D.

I'm looking for five brave souls who will stop a serial killer that reveres both Cyric and Bhaal. Note, this campaign is Halloween themed. But uses the FR Campaign setting. I will allow one tiefling or drow. Tiefling's stats are in the Planescape Campaign Setting.

To create your character, you will roll 4d6 six times, drop the lowest, and arrange to taste. You may also use the Complete Handbook for your class to customize your character further. I suggest a non-evil alignment for your characters. You will all have the experience points for your class at level 3.

Campaign Inspirations: Jack the Ripper and the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Well, I think that's it.

4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 5) - 2 = 12
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 2) - 2 = 16
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 5, 2) - 2 = 9
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 5) - 3 = 13
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 4) - 2 = 13
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 6) - 1 = 16

16/16/13/13/12/9

Never had a 2e campaign get off the ground before, so never really learned the system. Will roll some dice to dot this and will think this through.

At level 3…what is our starting gold? I’m thinking of making a ranger with a composite bow.

Edit: Just realized that 2e has minimum stats for rangers…hmmm…

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 4) - 1 = 11
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 6) - 2 = 18
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 1) - 1 = 13
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 6) - 2 = 15
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4) - 3 = 14
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 2) - 1 = 9

Not bad for 2e I would say.

EltonJ can I ask openly? I see you posting a LOT of interest checks and campaign recruitments. If I am being honest, many of those look interesting to me, but I really cannot fathom how you can expect to run them all? Are you going to focus on one of them, or are you confident you can run all of them?

Yes, you can.

As it happens, I try to run campaigns based off of the worlds I'm buying the rights from Wizards of the Coast. In this case, I'm buying Forgotten Realms. I'm also buying the rights to 2e.

I am not buying Ravenloft or Dark Sun, though I try to like both. But I wanted to run a Halloween themed adventure so why not Horror up the Realms a little?

So here we are, an adventure where you find the bad guy, find out his weakness, and go into Undermountain to find it and destroy it.

Starting gold is about 1,000 gp each. You may have spent more, you may have not. Rangers do, indeed, have minimum scores. Like the paladin does.

1000 gold? Alright. I can work with that.

I’ll be making an elf fighter with the archer kit.

I'm new to D&D2. Mostly just a Baldur's Gate player. But this is my attempt. If I got any rules wrong, please let me know and I'll fix it.

Background:

Eluvias is a hunter.

But he does not always hunt animals.

A devotee of Solonor Thelandira, Eluvias considers the mastery of the bow to be an act of religious devotion. To him, the bow is not merely a weapon. It is a sacred tool, and every arrow loosed should be deliberate, precise, and worthy of the god he serves.

His quarry, however, is not always game.

Eluvias has made a profession of hunting those who prey upon others. Followers of Bhaal, Bane, Cyric, and other murderous or destructive cults are among his favored quarry. Cultists, murderers, fugitives, and others who threaten the innocent are, in his eyes, little better than vermin.

Indeed, he considers them less than animals.

An animal kills because it must. It hunts because it is hungry. It does not murder for pleasure, power, or some twisted devotion to a god of slaughter.

Such people do.

And therefore they must be culled.

Eluvias does not see this as vengeance. Nor does he consider himself an executioner. He is a hunter, and there is a proper way to hunt.

He tracks his quarry. He studies their habits. He follows their trail. He waits for the right moment. And when the time comes, he puts an arrow through them.

If his quarry is wanted by the law, he brings them back alive when practical. There is no dishonor in allowing the authorities to decide their fate. After all, a hunter earns his living by bringing his catch home.

Eluvias simply has a rather unusual definition of "game."

For him, hunting the enemies of Solonor is both religious calling and profession. He earns his coin from the same skill through which he honors his god.

The distinction between the two has never seemed important to him.

Sounds like a ranger. I suggest buying a copy of the PHB and the Complete Ranger's Handbook to use the optional table for rolling your stats.

It's the truth. I know it sounds preposterous, but it's true.

Method VI: This method can be used if you want to create a specific type of character. It does not guarantee that you will get the character you want, but it will improve your chances. Each ability starts with a score of 8. Then roll seven dice. These dice can be added to your character's abilities as you wish. All the points on a die must be added to the same ability score. For example, if a 6 is rolled on one die, all 6 points must be assigned to one ability. You can add as many dice as you want to any ability, but no ability score can exceed 18 points. If you cannot make an 18 by exact count on the dice, you cannot have an 18 score.

I assume you mean this? I'll be editing this post to try and work it out

Rolls:

7d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 4, 3, 6, 5) = 27

Ranger Minimum
Strength 13
Dexterity 13
Constitution 14
Wisdom 14

Str: 8: + 6 + 4 = 18
1d100 ⇒ 52
Dex: 9 + 4 = 13
Con: 7 + 5 + 2 = 14
Int: 8
Wis: 8 +3 + 3 = 14
Cha: 8

Will play around with numbers bit more. But with this, at least, he can hit the requirements needed for a ranger.

Do we need to roll for HP?: 2d10 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12

Naaaaah :P

And also, does this mean we can use whatever method we want to create our characters?

No, I meant using method five. In the Complete Ranger's Handbook, there is an alternative method for rolling up a character. You roll a d12, and what ever result you get, that is your scores.

1d12 ⇒ 12

Str (16) Dex (13) Con (16) Int (13) Wis (14) Cha (13)

I'll go from there...

edit: Wow. Strength 16 is just +1 damage. Con14 from being an elf means it gives no benefits. 2e is really something else when it comes to what stats do.

Holy moly!

Holy Moly? It's not pathfinder.

Eluvias is an elf.

Str 16 is just +1 damage.
Dex 14 does nothing.
Con 15 is +1 HP. So at lvl 3, +3 HP.
Int 13 is +1 non weapon proficiency.
Wis 14 does nothing.
Cha 13 isn't needed for the class.

Because he is a ranger...he kind of has to use light armor. Otherwise, the entire point of the class goes away. So he's going to be rocking AC7.

Grand Lodge

stat: 4d6 - 3 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) - 3 = 15
stat: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 6) - 2 = 13
Stat: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 4) - 2 = 14
Stats: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 2) - 2 = 7
Stats: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 2) - 1 = 8
Stats: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 1) - 1 = 9

Not a fan of the rolls. But a Gnome or Halfling specialty priest is my idea here

Unless I can change my rolls
