Shadow Sheath & Alchemist Bombs

Rules Discussion

This doesn't work does it? Which is a shame bombs aren't that great if you take the old common ones. I thought this be fun.

It's a curious case because it isn't clear, but unlimited bombs are clearly OP.

The Shadow Sheath states:

Usage: a holster or sheath shaped for a one-handed thrown weapon of light Bulk or less

With an infinite array of darts, throwing knives, or similar weapons, you never need worry about being unarmed. You can spend 1 minute to load a weapon meeting the shadow sheath’s usage requirements into the sheath, which is hidden somewhere on your person. As long as the shadow sheath is on your person, you can Interact to draw an exact copy of the weapon from thin air. These copies retain the runes and abilities of the hidden weapon, though if you use any limited-use abilities (such as talismans or Activations with a frequency limit), they count against the weapon’s normal usages. A copy disappears shortly after leaving your hand (or being used for a thrown Strike).

Technically, “Bombs are martial thrown weapons with a range increment of 20 feet,” so they meet the requirements to use with Shadow Sheath. At the same time, Bombs are also consumables, so they fall into “limited-use abilities.” IMO, even with this not being completely clear, one that it is not a limited-use abilities but the own weapon that explodes on use. Allow to use unlimited bombs clearly is not well balance for any gameplay. So I doubt that any GM allows.

The maximum that a GM would allow is to use it to draw as free action and to add the others ikon effects to it.

Agreed. Bombs are a one-hand thrown weapon of light Bulk or less. But they are explicitly activated when thrown and being a consumable they have a usage limit of 1/ever.

Another example would be the Ghoul Stiletto. If you put that in a Shadow Sheath (daggers have the thrown trait - it is questionable but for the sake of the argument, allow it for now) you could draw copies of it and throw them. You could also use the Ghoul Stiletto's activated ability. But when you do use that ability, the actual Ghoul Stiletto in the Shadow Sheath has the ability go on cooldown for an hour - not just the copy of it that you just used.

So, similarly, if you have a bomb in the Shadow Sheath, drawing and throwing (and implicitly activating) the bomb will count against the actual bomb's usage limit of 'consumable' - not just the copy of it that you used.

I'm not even seeing how this is unclear. The example consumable in the Shadow Sheath rule is talismans. If I have a Dart with a Potency Crystal talisman on it in the Shadow Sheath and I draw the dart, throw it at an enemy, and activate the talisman - what happens to the actual Potency Crystal in the Shadow Sheath?

There is only one bomb, currently published, that will work the way you want because they never gave it the consumable trait.

Silver Orb

Its not very good.
