I was curious about this as far as trying to make pawns for my own PCs?

I cannot speak for Paizo, but I have found that framing matting is about the perfect width. My local framing place sells bags of offcuts really cheaply

Our pawns are actually greyboard and with a printed coating! Specifically, it is 140 gsm glossy art paper over 2mm greyboard, both certified by FSC. Hopefully this helps!

Is there somewhere I can buy that?

Amazon or any crafting store should have it, or similar materials that are used in bookbinding.

I'm not seeing 2mm greyboard specifically though. And craft stores who SHOULD know what it is are clueless when I call asking for it. :-(

Using google and putting '2mm greyboard' into it - brought me more than 10 pages of results - the first one from a board game forum talking about this stuff specifically.

The product suggestions for sale shows me 8 options for sale including an amazon link.

Specifically if you search amazon for this "25 Sheets 9 x 12 Inch Thick Grey Chipboard Sheets for Book Binding Covers" you will see at least one product they recommended to me - if not try the US version - hopefully that helps.

Cool. So it IS a book binding? The micheals people said it felt a lot like puzzle pieces.

Glad to know I'm not too far off. I use 2mm chipboard because my mother's cricut can cut it reliably and cleanly, with glossy printable vinyl stickers for the artwork. I pre-cut the chipboard on the cricut, cut the artwork out roughly with scissors, stick the chipboard cutout onto the back of the artwork, and use a razor blade to trim the artwork to fit the chipboard. So far it's worked well and allows me to print off some out of print or custom pawns, but I'd really rather just buy them myself... Not that I get to play in person much anymore, I've moved far more online these days.

Paizo typically uses thick, high-quality cardstock for their Pathfinder pawns. It’s a sturdy, coated cardboard that balances durability with affordability. This cardstock is usually around 12-14 point thickness, which gives the pawns enough rigidity to stand up well during gameplay but still keeps them lightweight and easy to handle. The surface often has a slight glossy finish to protect the printed artwork from wear and tear.

If you’re looking to replicate that quality for custom pawns, aim for a similar cardstock weight and consider a protective laminate or coating for extra durability.

As stated above, we use greyboard and with a printed coating! Specifically, it is 140 gsm glossy art paper over 2mm greyboard, both certified by FSC. Both of these materials can be purchased online or from local craft stores, so just check in with your FLCS (friendly local craft store ^_^).

Grayboard, also known as chipboard or grey chipboard, it's a type of paperboard made from 100% recycled paper pulp, so it has MANY uses. A pawn is made the same way puzzle pieces are, just that pawns don't lock together.

Common uses:
Packaging: Boxes, backing for displays, layer pads.
Stationery: Bookbinding, notepads, folders.
Other applications: Display boards, puzzles, partitions.

I loved the specificity of answers here!
