Giant Wasp Companion errata

Rules Discussion

Is the Giant Wasp companion missing errata?
It deals poison, but doesn't have any description of what sort of poison it is.
Its darting stab ability is worse than just the standard stride and strike. Flourish does nothing for it either.

Was it meant to be a 1 action, not 2? Was it meant to not provoke AoOs? Whats the word on the poison?

Poison is also just a standard Damage Type.

It often comes from afflictions, but that is not necessary. There are several creatures (Apothecary Bee, Drakauthix, Catoblepas) and alchemical items (Blight Bomb, Green Gut) that deal simple poison damage without affliction stages.

There are other threads questioning the Giant Wasp companion's ability. The primary suspect for errata is the action cost, not the damage type.

"Damage 1d6 piercing plus poison"

It isn't an attack that does poison as it's damage type. It is an Attack that does piercing damage plus some unspecified poison (whether poison damage of an unstated amount or an afflction).

It is absolutely an error. We just don't know the correct answer.

... Yeah, that's fair.

And if it is intended to be applying Giant Wasp Venom on every Strike, then that would justify the action cost for Darting Stab compared to other similar animal companion abilities. At least at low level play. It would need to scale the DC in order to stay useful.

The action cost would still make no sense, because they can still just Fly and Strike as separate actions, in their preferred order. The problem with Darting Stab isn't "it's too weak". The problem is "it actually does not do anything."

The Giant Wasp animal companion is an Advanced Companion and Level 14.

The Monster Core Giant Wasp stats include:

Monster Core pg. 343" wrote:

Damage 1d12+4 piercing plus giant wasp venom

Giant Wasp Venom (incapacitation, poison) Saving Throw DC 19 Fortitude; Maximum Duration 6 rounds; Stage 1 no effect (1 round); Stage 2 clumsy 2 (1 round); Stage 3 paralyzed (1 round)

I would guess the companion should deliver Giant Wasp Venom.

Grand Lodge

It would definitely have to say that.
Besides, those are two different sets of stats, and neither of those save DCs are useful at level 14+.

Yeah, thats what i mean. Its missing the XdY poison damage part, in addition to action economy of its ability.
