Combat Grab Feat

Rules Discussion

So I just reread it after a post in the Spring Errata 2025 Suggestion form and saw that it can Grab a creature of any size. Would you consider this legal/RAI or is this just one of the RAW and Paizo never bothered to fix it?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd say it's fine unless they errata it since it's been that way forever. It just makes the target Grabbed, skipping any check aside from the Strike. The size limitation only exists for Athletics actions, not the conditions

That's hilarious.

And it reminds me that Ambush Bladderwort from Kin also has the same oversight, and forgot to have a size limitation. So the 1 square trap can swallow, trap, and drown an outright gargantuan sized creature, lol.

Yeah, I think technically it works.

You're not performing a grapple (which uses an athletics check typically).

You're using the combat grab feat, which just imposes the grabbed condition (which is the same effect you would get from a grapple check that was a success).

I think it is too much. RAW it works. But that is not RAI. I think it needs errata/houserule fix.

I would follow the idea of a subordinate action. Yes, I know that Combat Grab doesn't have Grapple as a subordinate action. That is why I say that by RAW you can grab anyone regardless of size using Combat Grab. If Grapple was a subordinate action of Combat Grab, then the rule would be that the subordinate action has all of its normal limitations - including Grapple's limitation on what size of creature you can successfully grab. So that is how I would run Combat Grab instead - you can only successfully grab creatures that you could normally grab with Grapple.

That does mean that I would allow abilities that change a character's size of target grappled creature to work with Combat Grab. Titan Wrestler being the most obvious.

Very clearly works RAW. Given that it's been this way since AFAIK the original Core Rulebook, I don't think there's much of a case to say it's not RAI, either.

It's good, but its a Press action so the miss chance is higher. It requires a fighting style that anecdotally I don't think is very popular on Fighter (1h/free). The "it works on any size" part is only really saving you a skill feat since with Titan Wrestler size is rarely an issue anyway unless you decide this is the chance to make a Sprite Grappler... and hey, go for it!

I don't think there's any issue that needs addressing here. TBH, I'd rather take Slam Down and get the reactive strike.

That's fair.

I don't hold the same opinion. But it is a reasonable way to run things despite my opinion on the matter.

That, I don't agree with. The length of time that something has been in print doesn't have any relationship with if it is intended or not.

For example, the Incorporeal trait providing complete immunity to Strength-based Strike actions has also been in print from the first printing of the CRB. That doesn't mean that it is intended to work that way.
