Paizo General Discussion

Okay, I know this is a post where the topic matter is inherently potentially divisive and political. I'm going to steer away from as much of that as I can.

The reasons, whether you support it or not -- I don't care to discuss any of that here. That's not the point of this post. The point is to point out that tariffs and duties are going to be imposed -- soon -- on American products coming into Canada as a result of America's imposition of a 25% duty on all Canadian goods last night.

Those will take effect on American products on Tuesday Feb 4, 2025.

The effect this will have on your Canadian customers' ability to pay is going to be doubly affected by not just retaliatory tariffs imposed on US products at the Canadian border, but just as much by a falling Canadian dollar. That's going to increase the price on your products even if the Canadian Gov't holds off (for now, I stress the temporary nature of this forbearance) on imposing tariffs on product categories like Paizo's.

From my perspective, it's not hard to see how the price of your products will be effectively 33%+ higher for all of your Canadian customers by the end of February. On top of the already sky-high shipping costs?

You are going to see cancellations of subscriptions by those remaining Canadian customers you have. That's where this is going, sadly.

Rather than see outright cancellations, I URGE Paizo to add a suspend subscription button and make it prominent and easy for Canadian customers to see. Send The Canadian subscribers an e-mail about it, too.

This outcome isn't likely what anybody here wanted (or at least, very few of you). But like it or not -- here is where we now are.

I'd rather that Paizo and its customers acted rationally, with wisdom and forethought, and acted reasonably to preserve a customer relationship which has been strong and valued. Sometimes, crises beyond the control of both Paizo and its customers emerge; it's not Paizo's fault - and it's not the customers' fault. What's most important now is that steps are taken to not let the whole thing slide right down into the fire.

Which is where I fear it may go in the short to medium term without prudent intervention.

Thank you for your thoughts and your time.

Trump's tariffs affect people in the US buying from Canada, it's Canada's tariffs in response to Trump that will raise prices on US goods sold in Canada, although the 10 % tariff on China could affect the price of all physical Paizo products printed in China. Note I don't blame Canada for doing this. This is the dumbest trade war in history I can't imagine it going on for more than a month or two, if it does we will have much more important things to worry about than gaming prices. Although the trade war with China could go on much longer.

List of products from the United States subject to 25 per cent tariffs effective February 4, 2025.

Note the high cost of shipping affects everyone. Gaming supplies seem to run out in Canada slower than in the US for some games, shipping from Canada to the US is not cheap either. This will likely get even higher with the trade war when Cannad raises the price of oil sold tot he US by 10%

I prefer physical books, but I'm willing to go PDF only if needed to avoid the cost of tariffs and high shipping costs.

I brought this up days after the election, I'm not expecting a response from Paizo, or if they do respond it will be once the tariffs are having an impact they have to react to. I can't imagine they are not also keeping a close eye on this. It's hard to respond to when the person who caused it changes his mind every day.

old post ..

A suspend button/choice is pointless. It is not in the interest of Paizo to do such a thing. Customers who do cancel their subscription will come back when their situation improves.

A day later Trump already backed down to Canada and Mexico, this is why I don't think Paizo will reply to this, things change too fast.

Or they won't.

I was a superscriber since Burnt Offerings came out and the inability to suspend subscriptions required me to cancel my subscriptions. I haven't renewed and am unlikely to do so in the future (although I do still occasionally buy some PDFs).

I get where Paizo is coming from, but I'm just saying, when there isn't a convenient option to skip shipments or suspend them that there is a chance of losing the customer subscription entirely.

We may get it with the new site and storefront rollout, assuming political and market changes don't torpedo it.

I'm pretty sure it's the law now to provide one button cancelations of subscriptions.

I of course, could be wrong but I thought the Supreme Court made it illegal.

(From google searches)

"The rule, nicknamed “click-to-cancel,” requires that companies make canceling a subscription as easy as it is to sign up, and allow cancellation in the “same medium” offered to sign up. The rule took effect on Jan. 14 2025, however, regulated entities have until May 14 2025 to comply."

It sounds like it's being challenged in court (not by Paizo) so it might get delayed.

I remember and think about this from time to time. I haven’t heard anything new on this since…Jim Butler maybe? brought it up… some time ago? Has anyone heard anything recently on the new site/changes or new storefront?

Nah. My last memory is the same comms from Jim you mentioned.

That's the last I remember too. Besides the shopping subscription issues, I'm really curious how the new forums will affect play-by-post.
