The specialization allows them to use melee weapons for their abilities, and strength for their key ability.

The text says they may like to use their fists, etc. it says you may be a martial artist. However, the text seems to not enable unarmed attacks unless they get treated as melee weapons in Starfinder.

Are strikers prohibited from using their abilities with unarmed attacks. Is that what was intended? Or were they intended to allow agile melee unarmed attacks?

My daughter thought she could convince her brother to try a vesk striker operative with natural weapons, but if they can’t use their natural attacks with their abilities, he probably would not want to play that.

well, its clearly intended to work based off the flavor text, so I'd allow your son to do it and just note that the rules need to be adjusted to accommodate it as your first piece of actual feedback.

"may use strength" or "uses strength" as KAS? That wording is pretty vital on being able to make a switch hitting operative.

From another source on discord--STR as KAS

Well, if that isn't a communication error, it's definitely going on the list! :D

Even without the full context, this absolutely has to be a choice. Not having the gun stat as your KAS in the gun game, particularly with the gun expert is not something that should be decided for you.

From a discord I'm on:

Quote:
Striker: Athletics + Athletics SF, Can choose Str as key attribute. Exploit: You get expert prof with 1-handed agile melee weapons instead of martial guns and they scale 1-handed agile melee and simple guns in place of martial guns. Aim applies to 1 handed agile melee, and you can use 1-handed agile melee in place of make a ranged strike on your feats. They also have the Reactive Step Reaction, where if someone moves away from you, you Step twice after them. EE: you get the Overwhelming Strike free action, when you hit your mark you either off-guard, suppress or prevent them benefiting from cover until the end of your next turn.

If the intent is to use Agile weapons, then the limitation on unarmed attacks could be intentional, given that unarmed attacks from stances can easily go above a d6, which is usually as high as an Agile, one-handed weapon will go.

And this stuff is exactly why I prefaced my statement with "if this is true" XD. At this point my takeaway is "don't trust previews or people with early copies, because they inevitably get some parts wrong".

Which is really odd, because finesse apparently doesn't count either, despite PF2 clearly saying that the two are part of the same package. Both are even expression of the exact same concept of "nimble fencing weapons" and such. And if you had finesse in there, you could simply add unarmed attacks back in so long as they have either trait. Like is already standard practice.

Again, if this is true (!), then it's going on the list. It just seems unnecessary, both mechanically and thematically.

Yeah, I was a bit confused by that too. I can't think of many instances where Agile and Finesse aren't lumped together.

Also, could someone flag the thread to be moved to the Operative forum, now that it's live? I'm worried I'll fat finger it and accidentally accuse someone of personal harassment or something.

Based on an AoN search, PF2e has 21 melee weapons that are Agile but are not Finesse. So not too many, but not unheard of either.
