Splinter Faith question

Rules Discussion

So I'm planning to play a cleric of Dammerich, I'd like to take the Ambition domain. Since it isn't on any of my deities list, it says it's one level lower. So does this mean for the 7th level heightened power I need to be level 15 instead of 13 to get it?

Anyone?

That is correct. Need lvl 15 to get the 7th rank heighten effect.

Trying to follow along on the build.

So you are getting the Ambition domain through Splinter Faith, but it falls into the category of having the domain spells heightened one level lower than normal.

And you are talking about the Competitive Edge domain spell since that one has a Heightened 7th entry.

Yes, you would need to be at character level 15 in order for the focus spell to be cast at rank 7. Normally you cast focus spells at rank 7 at level 13, but because of the heightening reduction, your casting of Competitive Edge would only be rank 6 at that point.

I think this may also be a case where it is possible to have a focus spell that you are unable to cast.

You can't cast a focus spell if its minimum rank is greater than half your level rounded up, even if you somehow gain access to it.

I haven't verified the character level, feat level, and resulting heightening level yet, but it may be that you can get a domain spell at what is normally its minimum rank, but then the rule to heighten it one level lower means that you can't cast the spell at that level.

Related to the question, If I take Splinter Faith at level 1 can I right away take the domain I want along with the Initial Domain Power or do I need to spend a second class feat on Domain Intimate in order to do so?

Level 1 build is generally done in any order.

So by applying Splinter Faith feat pick first, then when your class ability gives you a focus spell, you can pick any spell available to you - including the ones available from Splinter Faith.

That's definitely possible, though I also think there's a potential argument to be made that since you're casting the spell at base rank the heightening rule doesn't apply, since you aren't heightening it at all.

Both ideas feel a bit odd though.

Agreed. For getting the domain focus spell through Splinter Faith at level 1, I could see the GM ruling that you can have the spell, but can't cast it because your effective Rank for casting it is not high enough. You would have to wait until level 3 to be able to cast the spell at Rank 1.

I can also see a GM ruling that you can still cast it at the base Rank 1 at level 1.
